Sign-Up Apprentice Program Signups: Old Gens OU

Welcome to Battling 101! If you're seeking a tutor for Old Gens OU, you are in the right place. Please read all the rules carefully and fill out every part of the application.

Available Formats:
SS OU, SM OU, XY OU, BW OU, DPP OU, ADV OU, GSC OU, RBY OU

THE RULES

  • You must be able to access Discord, or whatever your tutor wants as the primary form of communication.
  • You must be willing to use Pokemon Showdown! even if you are being tutored in a cartridge format such as Battle Spot or VGC.
  • You, the tutee, should have at least 15 posts before signing up AND your account's age should be a minimum of at least 1 month old before signing up.
    • This is not a strict requirement meaning you may still be paired without satisfying it, so no matter what, DO NOT spam post elsewhere in the forum. That is an infractable offense and we do not encourage such behavior from potential Tutees.
  • You must have battled competitively for a decent amount in at least ONE of the Smogon tiers or Battle Spot / VGC to sign up. Playing 10 or so matches on the PS! ladder is not substantial enough, ~70 or so is more reasonable. This experience does not need to be for the format you sign-up for; this is just to weed out people who have never played competitively that can improve themselves simply by using resources already available to them without needing a tutor to hold their hand.
  • You, the tutee, are responsible for setting up times with your tutor. When you receive the Smogon notification informing you of the pairing, please take the initiative and post on their VM wall first. Continued scheduling and communication is key to a successful pairing!
  • Use the Tutee Talk forum to complain about your tutor (or praise them if they're doing a good job). These are no longer mandatory, but if your tutor is ridiculously inactive or is a complete jackass, COMPLAIN HERE. Nobody can see your tutee talk posts except for you and the Battling 101 Staff; everything is confidential.
  • Signups older than 4 months or 1 month since last login will be considered inactive. These will be moved to the Inactive Posts thread, and can be returned back to this thread by request.
  • Tutors can and will drop you if sessions go badly, and significant violations may result in a ban from B101. Be active, be enthusiastic, be respectful. Make the best of your time together!
Here is the signup template, and an example sign-up post.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing competitively in early XY and spammed Baton Pass on the ladder. I was pretty skilled I guess. I then got more involved with Smogon and started to play in various tournaments like UUPL and later on Snake and SPL. I could use a bit more practice in this tier though, so I'm looking to get help

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I have played a smattering of games 5 years back and tried to get into Adv OU using copied teams but I saw very small success. A few weeks ago I crafted my own teams and started to adjust them slightly to make them better - but overall good team building evades me and my team often gets hard countered. I also am looking to better understand tools and common sets and how to properly react to them. I have a big strength in being able to judge how my opponent will play after a few turns of playing with them. Currently I hover between 1200-1300 on the ADV OU ladder and wish to become a top tier threat :)

ADV OU was one of the first tier I've played when I started competitive battling on showdown a little over a year ago, but since it was my first steps at competitive, I didn't got a decent level. During this year, I mostly played gen6 PH and gen8 LC where I learned a lot about pokemon competitive battling. And so I want to learn more about an oldgen to play a tier that won't change in next years and don't have to learn a new tier every years when a new pokemon game is released. // Currently having interest in ORAS OU and i would like some help to get better at this tier.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon: I've been playing competitive Pokemon for 2 years now. My go to tier is BW OU, but I also play ADV OU and DPP Ubers frequently. Recently, I've been laddering DPP OU and have found it entertaining. I would like to take the tier more seriously and potentially join an DPP tournament when I feel more confident.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): Showdown for me was a form of enjoyment up until i discovered the tours and tours plaza rooms, this is when I started taking battling truly seriously although I had casually laddered a fair bit before this. Right now it is getting to a point where I do not have the time or motivation to grind the tours room over and over again despite consistently winning tours I put effort into. This is logically the best opportunity for me as right now I am looking to expose myself to as many smogon tournaments as I can and of course this involves past tours as well where I do not quite have as much of a grip over the metagames.

Playing RandBats, ADV has always been my favourite gen, I know all the mechanics and understand how the gen works.

I've started playing on PS late 2015 with ORAS PU on the ladder. My motivation and activity picked up in 2020 when I started taking part to ZU tournaments; I've been overall positive in ZU team tournaments and had great showings in individuals, making finals of 2021 Circuit and winning 2022 Open. I also played a bit of BDSP OU and eventually won its circuit.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing pokemon last year on smogon, I would really like to know more about the game, the meta, and which teams to use against which person or things like that. I would like to be certain in DPP since it is an old gen that I find interesting to learn, as I said I would like to have new knowledge and reach high in one of the tiers that I proposed (ORAS and DPP). Although I must say that when it comes to DPP I know little to nothing.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I've been playing pokemon showdown since october of 2021, been playing almost every tier ever since. Haven't ever been much active in smogon, but recently started trying to write analysis (mostly for Ubers). I've played ADV a bunch, but i've never been able to learn DPP much (specifically team building, but battling as well). I know enough of the metagame and how it's played but im never able to make good enough teams as i usually can do for the other tiers

I mainly play UU, but I also sign up for a lot of OU tournaments and have even hit top 16 during the SS OU summer seasonal. I have been trying to find an old gen OU that I enjoy through these seasonals for the past year and have finally landed on DPP OU to grind out as I am enjoying this seasonal a lot. I will happily put in the hours to get good at this tier. I have grown in the last year in UU as well where i went from getting drafted for UUFPL, to having a positive record in Swiss, and eventually getting picked up for UUPL this year. It has been a fun year, but I would like to break out into an OU tier as well for better results in tournaments and future team tours. Any help for me to put in the hours would be greatly appreciated!

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I began playing games on the ladder at the very end of gen 7 where I’d say I was pretty terrible and didn’t take it to seriously. Through gen 8 I mainly played Nat dex where I stayed at around 1500 on a different showdown account. Recently I’ve been trying out older generations and ADV has been my favourite to play but I also like BW and ORAS. I’ve played a bit of doubles and vgc. I feel like my biggest shortcomings are team building and not thinking far enough ahead in the game. I’ve recently tried my hand at a bit of draft playing in emerald open3 but didn’t make it out of pools, and I’m trying to play in tournaments regularly. For example I recently signed up for the ADV global championships.

I started playing when sword and shield came out(SS OU). From there I would watch yt videos to get better and learn the meta better. I left the game for about 1 year and here we are now. I am very washed right now but before my long break, I was a decent player. Idid star playing some bw ou before my break, I am somewhat familiar to the metagame.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I began playing Pokémon Showdown around 7th or 8th grade. I’m in 12th grade now, so I think it was around 2017 or 2018 - sometime during Gen 7. I played a bunch of different formats casually back then, although I remember playing a lot of Ubers.
I played casually on and off until around 2022 (maybe later 2021), when I began playing Gen 8 (which was the current latest gen) DUU, which is the first time I got into Showdown seriously. I then started DOU after a couple weeks and played it seriously for a couple months. I never got super far (peaked like 1300), but I got to the point where I feel like I had a base knowledge of the game and of the tier, and knew how it worked.
Around a month ago (beginning of March 2023), I got back into Showdown, but began playing Gen 4 OU, just on a whim. I have been using sample teams, which I have then modified, and have been getting really into it and having a lot of fun. I have over 170 games in the tier and have been floating between 1100 and 1200 ELO, which is where I started, and I still can’t seem to break much higher than 1200. I feel like I’ve hit a plateau, which is why I’m asking for help here.

Experience: I’ve had 90% gxe accounts for ORAS OU but despite its similarities fail at around the 83% mark at SM, probably given that I just don’t really know the tier. I’ve been playing Pokémon showdown since I think 2018 but I lose track of time so I don’t know. Only recently started playing proper tournaments and have been winning around 80% of my games so far.

I am hoping that by gaining experience and skills, it will let me pass down those skills down to newer players who seek the thrill and excitement of battling. I want to learn the gens SM and SS mainly, but I am down to learn any other format as I feel like I can't improve no matter how hard I try, and I am willing to be a tutee.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing competitive at the tail end of ORAS, where I excelled (by my standards) in the lower tiers, specifically UU and RU. After the Summer cycle, however, I quit mons to focus more on personal matters, like school and sports and didn't really play mons at all until I made my return in January of last year. Over my hiatus, I played casually on the ladder and I didn't really take any format seriously again until the most recent edition of ORAS Seasonal, where I placed in the top 32 in my first-ever attempt at it. I want to learn how to play different styles that exist throughout all the generations so that I become a better player and so that I can regain what I once had when I started playing all those years ago and to gain experience so that when it comes time to play these major tournaments, I'll be ready and I'll be a force to be reckoned with

I started using Pokémon showdown around 2016, but that was mainly to play with friends, and at the time, I had no idea what I was doing. Moving forward to around 2020/2021, I got back into showdown, and started to take a much more competitive interest in the game, learning the game by watching guides as well as poketubers (if that's what they're called) like Blunder ( https://www.youtube.com/@Thunderblunder777) and PokeaimMD (https://www.youtube.com/pokeaimmd), of which I still do to this day. Currently, I am trying to improve at the game, with the goal to eventually get ladder, and after, top 1. In order to do this, I'm hoping to get help in order to understand my flaws, conquer them, and to become an overall better player. As a side note, eventually I'd like to start entering tournaments and to get more involved within the community.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokémon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing SM PU, and I learned thanks to batling101 SM Ubers, Monotype, GSC OU, ORAS OU, and thanks to that I was able to play several teamtours like RUWC, RUPL, UUPL, UUSD, and several oldgens teamtours like GSC PL, Rcop among others , but I've been inactive for a long time and haven't played, so I'd like to relearn and resume playing GSC OU, which is my favorite oldgen and could help me for different tournaments.
