that's is almost entirely the reason to listen to Meshuggah. ;]
I love some of Meshuggah's shit, and they're fucking amazing... but I still hate that they consciously try to make you not enjoy listening to the music.

I understand that a lot of that dissonance and shit is supposed to make you feel off-kilter, but there's a time and place man...

It gets old and boring as fuck when you're just sitting on a syncopated rhythm going back and forth between two dissonant chords.

Awesome, another place to grab some music! I don't really listen to bands so much as certain songs, so I've always had trouble with finding music. Always good to get some new material!
Oh lord don't even get me started on this. You'll either think it's the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. Having said that, I'll just leave this here for you ;)

Please do listen to the entire song and don't be turned off by the album cover.
EDIT: sorry, the link should be working now.
I enjoyed this quite a bit, probably grab it later.

cool will probably listen to your show next week

this year has been pretty weak for me so far when it comes to metal

thomas you're forgetting amends aka aoty..............

but for the most part i agree with that list. i have a list of my goodies from 2013 here in case anyone cares.

ps doom: mayak is the goods.

sora13: that song just hit a new low for really bad deathcore.

the agonist: i like that rotting christ song. what album(s) would you recommend?

this year has been pretty weak for me so far when it comes to metal
this shouldn't last long!
sodom - epitome of torture - april 26th
immolation - kingdom of conspiracy - may 14th
dark tranquillity - construct - may 27th
children of bodom - halo of blood - june 7th
kalmah - seventh swamphony - june 17th
i read somewhere that CoB are going to be returning to their black metal roots. add that to the fact that they're one of my favorite bands and i'm very excited.

Really I haven't listened to them much, the only other album I have is Sanctus Diavolos, which is pretty good, but it's been quite a while since I've listened to it. But they've got quite a discography (11 albums and a shitload of demos/EPs).

Also, this is debatable about being "metal", but Steven Wilson is apparently putting Porcupine Tree on an indefinite hiatus.

i don't think they are trying to make you not enjoy the music. i think that they enjoy a different sort of music than most. i happen to also enjoy that type of music.

good deal!

imo there is no such thing as a "weak" year for music. you just have to know where to look.

the new Primitive Man, Rorcal and Cult of Luna are all excellent, and i really like the Agrypnie's album too.

i'll probably be listening to that Altar of Plagues today. i bookmarked it when it leaked and then forgot about it.

will check out Regarde Les Hommes Tomber.

didn't care for the Beastwars. the artwork is way better than the actual album.

does it mean I'm not a metalhead if most of the stuff posted here is too heavy for me
Noooo, it doesn't. You don't have to listen to black, sludge, doom, or death metal to be a metalhead! Even if you listen to nu metal, metalcore, or post hardcore, thrash you can be one. I'd even argue that listening to some hard rock bands can make you a metalhead. Tbh, metalhead Is more of a sociocultural stigma than defining what exactly you listen to(though both have a strong correlation with each other).

listening to nu metal, metalcore and hardcore does not make you a metalhead, because those things are not metal.

Woah, okay, let's slow down there man. I'm not a fan of nu metal either, but it is a subgenre of metal. Therefore, it is metal. Good metal? Well, 90% of the time, no. Metal? Yes.

Hardcore is definitely not metal, so I'll give you that one.

I don't want to get into the whole metalcore debate right now. However, regardless of whether or not one thinks metalcore is metal, posts like this one you've just made accomplish nothing positive.

I basically don't really go past the 80s (not horrible stuff like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard though), my main listening is NWOBHM and extremely cheesy power metal (ok that's past the 80s fairly often) and then some of the classics like Rainbow, Mercyful Fate, and Accept etc

I'm a Maidenhead

I also like some doom and small bits of thrash is ok but not my favourite

p.s. Riot are the best

Nu Metal is very far from being metal, and it should not be talked about in this thread.

i won't be happy about it, but if people INSIST on talking about metalcore and deathcore in this thread, fine. whatever. but it's still not metal.

unless we're talking real metalcore like Converge, Dillinger, et cetera. that's fine.

I HAVE SPOKEN.

Just repeatedly calling nu metal "not metal" doesn't change anything. It is still a subgenre of metal, just like how Thrash metal, Death metal, and Black metal are subgenres of metal. It's metal. As I said, I don't like nu metal either (with very few exceptions), but calling it "not metal" just makes you sound like an elitist prick.

That is all.

it has more in common with funk than metal.

let's just call it aggro-funk, then it wouldn't be a subgenre of metal, right?

friendly reminder that Skeletonwitch is putting out another album. also, if you missed it, Arsis had an ep out through some weird promotion.

welp, that's all i got, toodles

What I meant was that they consciously branch off from maintaining some melodic content on occasion to favor dissonance in order to get that jagged feeling of being shook about. If you enjoy that feeling then all of Meshuggah is amazing, but the music is definitely not easy to listen to.

fair enough.

it's like anything though, you have to know what you're listening for. if you're not familiar with a genre, it all sounds the same pretty much. and yeah, i think Mesh are their own genre.

this is my favorite Meshuggah track i think:
