RU Xatu revamp

[OVERVIEW]
Xatu's decent bulk, typing, and Magic Bounce allow it to neutralize common entry hazard setters in RU such as Steelix, Registeel, and Metagross without having to waste a turn using Defog. This, coupled with its ability to consistently pivot with Teleport, makes it a solid choice on offense teams. Still, even with maximum investment, Xatu's bulk is less than stellar. This can make it inconsistent against some hazard setters; for example, Metagross can 2HKO Xatu with a Meteor Mash Attack boost. Thus, Xatu may need to stay near full health to effectively perform its role. It can be risky to use Teleport, and Xatu depends on good predictions to keep hazards off the field. Xatu is also unable to beat certain setters like Stakataka, Golisopod, and Rhyperior, which considerably reduces its effectiveness.

[SET]
name: Magic Bounce
move 1: Future Sight / Grass Knot
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Roost
move 4: Teleport
item: Rocky Helmet
ability: Magic Bounce
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Future Sight pressures the opposing team and creates opportunities for Xatu to safely pivot into a wallbreaker with Teleport. Alternatively, Grass Knot hits Rhyperior for significant damage;(comma to semicolon) however, it makes Xatu significantly more passive and reliant on Teleport to be effective. The combination of Heat Wave and Rocky Helmet allows Xatu to consistently block Steel-types such as Registeel, Bronzong, and Steelix from setting entry hazards. 16 Speed EVs let it outspeed Golurk, and investment in Defense allows Xatu to outlast Metagross with Rocky Helmet. Not running an item is feasible to avoid Poltergeist from Ghost-type wallbreakers like Golurk and Dhelmise, as well as reducing Knock Off damage from Pokemon like Golisopod, at the cost of effectiveness against most hazard setters. 60 Special Attack EVs allow Xatu to OHKO Nidoqueen with Future Sight after Stealth Rock but weakens the Metagross matchup.

Xatu can weaken passive bulky Pokemon like Registeel by stalling them out, making sweepers like Sharpedo and Mimikyu significantly more reliable. Similarly, Pokemon with a vulnerability to Steel-types, such as Roserade and Gardevoir, can capitalize on this. These Pokemon can also take advantage of Teleport to safely set up. Entry hazard-weak Pokemon such as Tornadus and weather sweepers can forgo running Heavy-Duty Boots with Xatu, opening up teambuilding possibilities with other sets. Other pivots such as Flygon, Incineroar, Rotom-C, and Xurkitree can form a VoltTurn core with Xatu. Extra hazard removal from Flygon and Starmie can mitigate Xatu's inability to prevent entry hazards from certain setters. Volt Switch users like Raikou and Cobalion can capitalize on Xatu's weak Special Defense and Electric weakness, making Ground-types like Nidoqueen and Flygon great partners. They can also take advantage of any Rock-types Xatu forces in with Teleport. Wallbreakers like Bewear appreciate Teleport and can use it to capitalize on a setup opportunity.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

U-turn provides fast pivoting, although it's generally outclassed by Teleport's slow pivoting and synergy with Future Sight. Heavy-Duty Boots preserves Xatu's pivoting abilities in matchups where it fails to prevent Stealth Rock from going up, but losing Rocky Helmet can be detrimental against Stealth Rock setters like Metagross and Registeel. Thunder Wave can support slower wallbreakers such as Pangoro. Air Slash hits Pangoro, Roserade, and Golisopod in one attack, although it's weak. Calm Mind over Teleport could transform Xatu into a threat against slower teams, though losing Teleport is certainly not ideal.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Specific Entry Hazard Setters**: Golisopod can remove Rocky Helmet with Knock Off and click Liquidation until it gets a Defense drop, forcing Xatu out and letting it set Spikes. Rhyperior will always beat non-Grass Knot Xatu. A healthy Stakataka will beat Xatu one-on-one. Roserade can't stay in on Future Sight but takes advantage of Xatu's weak Special Defense with Sludge Bomb.

**Dark-types**: Dark-types like Incineroar and Pangoro can either set up on Xatu or force it out to threaten potential switch-ins, and they can easily put a stop to Future Sight.

**Electric-types**: Raikou and Xurkitree can easily switch into Xatu and maintain momentum with Volt Switch.

**Ghost-types**: As Xatu finds itself on mostly offense teams, Ghost-types like Golurk, Dhelmise, and Decidueye can pressure it with Poltergeist or force a sack. However, this risk can be mitigated by going itemless.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Xatu's decent bulk, typing, and Magic Bounce allow it to neutralize many of the common hazard setters in RU such as Steelix, Registeel, and Metagross without having to waste a turn using Defog. This, coupled with its ability to consistently pivot with Teleport, makes it a solid choice on fast-paced teams with unreliable hazard control. (It can also fit some BO and Balance teams quite nicely.)
  • Still, even with maximum investment Xatu's bulk is less than stellar. This can make it inconsistent against certain hazard setters; for example, a Metagross with high Attack investment has a small chance to 2HKO Xatu. (Mention also how Xatu is 2HKOed if Meta gets the Meteor Mash boost.) This makes Xatu reliant on staying at near full health to effectively perform its role and makes it riskier to pivot into another teammate.
  • Xatu will likely be unable to prevent certain Pokemon from setting hazards, namely Stakataka, Golisopod, and Rhyperior Necrozma (banned :[ ), considerably reducing its effectiveness and forcing the likely vulnerable Pokemon on your team to take hazard damage throughout a match.

[SET]
name: Magic Bounce
move 1: Roost (move FSight here, as you talk about it before Heat Wave.)
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Future Sight / Grass Knot (Grass Knot seems really hard to fit, no FSight Xatu will do nothing all game, and no Heat Wave is tough.)
move 4: Teleport
item: Rocky Helmet / itemless (I think no item is worth mentioning but not for a slash, helmet is just too valuable for Xatu.)
ability: Magic Bounce
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe 252 Def / 4 SpA (No reason not to outspeed Jolly Golurk, the 16 EVs don't cut enough into its bulk.)

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Future Sight pressures the opposing team and creates opportunities for Xatu to safely pivot into a wallbreaker with Teleport.
  • Alternatively, Grass Knot can hit Rhyperior for significant damage.
  • The combination of Heat Wave and Rocky Helmet allows Xatu to consistently block Steel-type Pokemon such as Registeel, Cobalion, and Steelix from setting entry hazards. (Important to be clear with what block means here.)
  • However, not running an item is a viable choice to avoid Poltergeist from Ghost-type wallbreakers and mitigate Knock Off damage from Pokemon like Golisopod at the cost of losing some of its effectiveness against hazard setters.
  • Maximum defense allows Xatu to outlast Metagross, although a spread with max Speed and Psyshock is more useful if your team struggles with Roserade. (Uninvested Psyshock has a ~30% chance to OHKO Roserade, so I'm not sure if it's super worth mentioning. I would mention 44 SpA and 60 SpA EVs, the first is to OHKO non-bulk Crobat with Future Sight and the latter the same but with Nidoqueen after Rocks, but obv you risk Metagross 2HKOing you even if slightly.)

  • Xatu can weaken passive bulky Pokemon like Registeel through Heat Wave and Rocky Helmet, making sweepers like Polteageist Cloyster (more relevant mentions) and Regidrago (I may be biased but I couldn't think of any other mentions. Maybe Mimikyu/Shark?) significantly more reliable. These can also take advantage of Teleport to safely set up if the opportunity presents itself.
  • Other pivots such as Flygon, Incineroar, and Xurkitree Cobalion can form a Voltturn core with Xatu.
  • Backup hazard removal from the likes of Flygon or Life Orb Starmie (any Starmie works) can mitigate Xatu's reliance on getting the right matchup.
  • Volt Switch users like Raikou and Cobalion can capitulate on its weak Special Defense, making Ground-types like Nidoqueen and Flygon great partners. These can also take advantage of any Rock-types Xatu Teleports on. (Other things I would like to see: Obstagoon switch-ins (Cobalion, Steelix, Weezing-G), Wallbreakers (primarily Obstagoon), hazard weak mons (Scarf Darmanitan, Acro Torn, etc. At the bottom I posted screenshots of recent non-weather Xatu teams from RUSD and SCL, so if you see any other trends please add them!)

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • U-turn allows Xatu to pivot out of matchups where it cannot afford to lose health, although it's generally outclassed by Teleport's slow pivoting and synergy with Future Sight.
  • Heavy-Duty Boots preserves Xatu's pivoting abilities in matchups where it fails to prevent Stealth Rock hazards (obv small nitpick but no need to mention hazards in general when only SR matters here) from going up, but losing Rocky Helmet can be detrimental against Stealth Rock users like Metagross and Registeel.
  • Thunder Wave can support slower wallbreakers such as Pangoro.
  • Air Slash is an option that hits Pangoro, Roserade, and Golisopod in one slot, although it's weak otherwise.
(Xatu honestly has a lot of nice tools worth mentioning like Wish, Night Shade, Toxic, Scarf + Trick, and Calm Mind.)
Checks and Counters
===================

**Hazard Setters it can't beat**: Necrozma can always switch into Xatu and either use Meteor Beam or set up on it before setting Stealth Rock. Golisopod can Knock Off Xatu's Rocky Helmet and Leech Life until Xatu needs to Roost. Rhyperior will always beat non-Grass Knot Xatu. A healthy Stakataka will outdamage Xatu's Rocky Helmet. Roserade can't stay in on Future Sight but takes advantage of Xatu's weak Special Defense with Sludge Bomb.

**Dark-types**: Dark-types like Incineroar, Obstagoon, and Pangoro can either set up on Xatu's face or threaten the rest of its team. (They also stump FSight, which is pretty big.)

**Electric-types**: Pokemon like Raikou and Xurkitree can switch in with near impunity and maintain momentum with Volt Switch.

**Rock-types**: Rhyperior and Stakataka have good matchups against Xatu and can likely set Stealth Rock on it. Grass Knot can pose issues for Rhyperior, while a weakened Stakataka can get chipped to death by Rocky Helmet. Similarly, Aerodactyl can Dragon Dance set up (could possibly be read as setting up SR.) on Xatu with ease.

**Ghost-types**: Because Xatu tends to find itself on more offensive teams, if a Ghost-type such as Golurk, Dhelmise, or Decidueye can click Poltergeist it will often mean sacking a Pokemon.

Future Sight pressures the opposing team and creates opportunities for Xatu to safely pivot into a wallbreaker with Teleport. Alternatively, Grass Knot can hits Rhyperior for significant damage;(comma to semicolon) however, it makes Xatu significantly more passive and reliant on Teleport to be effective. The combination of Heat Wave and Rocky Helmet allows Xatu to consistently block Steel-types Pokemon such as Registeel, Bronzong, and Steelix from setting entry hazards. 16 Speed EVs slip ahead of let it outspeed Golurk, and investment in Defense allows Xatu to outlast Metagross with Rocky Helmet.

These Pokemon can also take advantage of Teleport to safely set up if the opportunity presents itself. Backup hazard removal from the likes of Flygon or Starmie can mitigate Xatu's reliance on getting good matchups at Team Preview. Extra hazard removal from Flygon and Starmie can mitigate Xatu's inability to prevent entry hazards from certain setters. Volt Switch users like Raikou and Cobalion can capitalise capitalize on Xatu's weak Special Defense and Electric weakness, making Ground-types like Nidoqueen and Flygon great partners. These They can also take advantage of any Rock-types Xatu pivots on forces in with Teleport. Wallbreakers like Bewear appreciate entering the field with Teleport and can use it as to capitalize on a setup opportunity.(using teleport as a setup opportunity sounded wrong.)

Other Options
=============

U-turn allows Xatu to pivot out of matchups where it cannot afford to lose health provides fast pivoting, although it's generally outclassed by Teleport's slow pivoting and synergy with Future Sight. Heavy-Duty Boots preserves Xatu's pivoting abilities in matchups where it fails to prevent Stealth Rock from going up, but losing Rocky Helmet can be detrimental against Stealth Rock users setters like Metagross and Registeel. Thunder Wave can support slower wallbreakers such as Pangoro. Air Slash is an option that hits Pangoro, Roserade, and Golisopod in one moveslot attack, although it's weak otherwise. Calm Mind over Teleport could transform Xatu into a threat against slower teams, though losing Teleport is certainly not ideal.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Specific Entry Hazard Setters**: Xatu has general reliability struggles because specific hazard setters just get around it. Golisopod can remove Rocky Helmet with Knock Off and click Liquidation until it gets a Defense drop, which forces Xatu out so it can forcing Xatu out and letting it set Spikes. Rhyperior will always beat non-Grass Knot Xatu. A healthy Stakataka will outdamage Xatu's Rocky Helmet.(This wording is a bit weird. Do you mean "A healthy Stakataka will beat Xatu one-on-one"?) Roserade can't stay in on Future Sight but takes advantage of Xatu's weak Special Defense with Sludge Bomb.

**Dark-types**: Dark-types like Incineroar and Pangoro can either set up on Xatu or force it out to threaten most potential switch-ins, and they can easily put a stop to Future Sight shenanigans.

**Electric-types**: Pokemon like Raikou and Xurkitree can easily switch into Xatu and maintain momentum with Volt Switch.

**Ghost-types**: Because Xatu tends to find itself on more offensive teams, if a Ghost-type such as Golurk, Dhelmise, or Decidueye can click Poltergeist on it, that will often mean sacking a Pokemon. Xatu can mitigate this risk by opting to run go itemless, however. As Xatu finds itself on mostly offense teams, Ghost-types like Golurk, Dhelmise, and Decidueye can pressure it with Poltergeist or force a sack. However, this risk can be mitigated by going itemless.
