Warstory: Chain Chomp doing what it does best!

I had a mental struggle with Shoddy, between wanting to use fun teams of BL/UU and stuff, but no one ever wanting to battle me or having a team ready, so I decided to have another go at the ladder for more boring OU matches, but this one certainly kept me entertained and at some points on the edge of my set by not knowing what the outcome of the battle would be.

First up, the teams, in order of appearance throughout the battle:

PabloMeza:

vs

mITSYK:

These were the rules in effect (standard Ladder rules):

Rules:
Ladder Match
Sleep Clause
Freeze Clause
OHKO Clause
Evasion Clause
Species Clause
Strict Damage Clause

mYSTIK sent out Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
PabloMeza sent out Bronzong (lvl 100 Bronzong).
Hippowdon's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
A sandstorm brewed!

Hmmm well I'm in a pretty good position here, because I have lots of EQ resistors/immunes, and the only thing that could force me to switch would be Yawn, so I think I'm in a good position here. I decide to Stealth Rock, as I rather save my Sleep for a different Pokemon.

mYSTIK switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).
Spiritomb is exerting its pressure!
Bronzong used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
The sandstorm rages.
Spiritomb is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Spiritomb lost 6% of its health.
Spiritomb's leftovers restored its health a little!
Spiritomb restored 6% of its health.

There, the most this thing can do is Will-O-Wisp, and Bronzong doesn't mind Sleep that much due to its natural bulkyness. Spiritomb has no weaknesses though, so I will most likely have to 2HKO it, thus I think sleeping Spiritomb is the correct choice in this battle.

Spiritomb used Shadow Ball.
Bronzong lost 22% of its health.
Bronzong's special defence was lowered.
Bronzong used Hypnosis.
Spiritomb fell asleep!

Spiritomb's leftovers restored its health a little!
Spiritomb restored 6% of its health.
Bronzong's leftovers restored its health a little!
Bronzong restored 6% of its health.

There we go, the Defense drop I don't mind since my Bronzong has no business taking Special hits anyways. I wonder what his next move will be, but I decide to switch to Gengar to at least threaten Spiritomb.

mYSTIK switched in Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Hippowdon's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
Pointed stones dug into Hippowdon.
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.
PabloMeza switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
The sandstorm rages.
Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Well that worked out nicely. No clue why he switched Hippowdon back in, maybe he just didnt want Hippowdon asleep to make sure it could counter possible stuff like Garchomp or Tyranitar. I opt to not try and overpredict at this point, since I know only 2 Pokemon of his so I went with the obvious move.

mYSTIK switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 12% of its health.
Gengar used Energy Ball.
It's not very effective...
Heatran lost 7% of its health.
The sandstorm rages.
Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.

He made a smart switch in, and my Gengar lacks Focus Blast so it can't really do anything to Heatran. I switch out to my perfect Heatran counter.

PabloMeza switched in Vaporeon (lvl 100 Vaporeon ?).
Heatran used Overheat.
It's not very effective...
Vaporeon lost 47% of its health.
Heatran's special attack was harshly lowered.
The sandstorm rages.
Vaporeon is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Vaporeon lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.

Wow that hurt alot more than I expected, but his Special attack has now been lowered, and since it did that much I assume Choice Specs, which comes into play later on, so I'm free to Wish to make any switch after this turn easier.

mYSTIK switched in Empoleon (lvl 100 Empoleon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Empoleon.
Empoleon lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon used Wish.
Vaporeon made a wish!

Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.
Empoleon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Empoleon restored 6% of its health.

Its very rare to see an Empoleon used, and it certainly had the advantage here, but since Vaporeon is so light, I assume it won't do more than 50%, specially since it has Leftovers so I opt to absorb the obvious Grass Knot and Roar to scout a bit more.

Empoleon used Grass Knot.
It's super effective!
Vaporeon lost 45% of its health.
Vaporeon used Roar.
mYSTIK switched in Skarmory (lvl 100 Skarmory ?).
Pointed stones dug into Skarmory.
Skarmory lost 12% of its health.
The wish came true!
Vaporeon restored 50% of its health.

Skarmory's leftovers restored its health a little!
Skarmory restored 6% of its health.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.

Ah, that Skarm everyone hates. So do I, since I hate predictable Pokemon, but I definately can't let it lay layers and layers of Spikes, so I bring Gegar back in to force a switch from him.

PabloMeza switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Skarmory used Spikes.
Spikes were scattered everywhere!
Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!

Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!

Skarmory's leftovers restored its health a little!
Skarmory restored 6% of its health.

My team hates Sandstorm and any form of Spikes, because even with Vaporeon, alot of my Pokemon are very fragile and require alot of smart predictions for me to bring them in 'safely'.

mYSTIK switched in Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Hippowdon's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
Pointed stones dug into Hippowdon.
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.
Gengar used Thunderbolt.

Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.
Hippowdon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Well that may seem like a bad move, but I had pretty much 3 choices there: Shadow Ball since he would obviously switch, but he could go to Heatran or Empoleon, although less likely, then with Thunderbolt he only had 1 safe option, hippowdown, and finally Energy Ball he could've predicted and stayed in or switched in Heatran, so I tried to reduce the odds of him switching in a correct Pokemon and opted for Thunderbolt, but he predicted pretty well.

PabloMeza switched in Vaporeon (lvl 100 Vaporeon ?).
Vaporeon was hurt by Spikes!
Vaporeon lost 12% of its health.

The sandstorm rages.
Vaporeon is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Vaporeon lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.

I needed to threaten Hippowdown immediately, so I went to Vaporeon to safely come in on the obvious Stealth Rock coming my way. With 1 layer of Spikes and Stealth Rock, I'd have to limit my switchins, and it specially hinders my other fragile Pokemon in the team.

mYSTIK switched in Empoleon (lvl 100 Empoleon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Empoleon.
Empoleon lost 6% of its health.

Ah there is Empoleon again, and I had some very frustrating thoughts here: he could predict I would stay to try and heal and absorb the Grass Knot like last time, except I only had 46% health left, so I was in very shaky ground, or he could use Surf, assuming I'd switch, OR he could Grass Knot assuming I would assume he would use Surf. LOL yeah alot goes through my mind when playing, but I opt to switch out again just to play it safe.

PabloMeza switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gengar.
Gengar lost 12% of its health.

Yup, I made the right move, and I have an advantage again, but I only know of Grass Knot on his arsenal, so who knows what he'll do next, I again opt for the obvious choice.

Empoleon used Protect.
Empoleon protected itself!
Gengar used Thunderbolt.
Empoleon protected itself!
The sandstorm rages.
Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.

Ah nice, I guess that is Empoleons best bet at trying to pseudo heal and help the team out by scouting, and it certainly helped him out this time. He probably assumes I'm Scarfed or Specsed with all my switching around, so I predict his switch to Hippowdown again and try to gain the advantage, only to be very very surprised.

mYSTIK switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).
Pointed stones dug into Garchomp.
Garchomp lost 6% of its health.

Well if I stuck to my ScarfChomp hype, I wouldnt be in such a bad position, but seeing how I'm using Chain Chomp, I was most likely slower than his Garchomp AND just limited the number of attacks I can fire off due to Life Orb. I need to get Garchomp out, so I bring in my best bet against the physical variants of Garchomp.

PabloMeza switched in Bronzong (lvl 100 Bronzong).
Pointed stones dug into Bronzong.

Ah, my own creation used against me, good thing Bronzong is so bulky and such a good counter (if it carries HP Ice, which I don't), my only option here is to dent it a little with Earthquake and see what it switches into when it confuses itself.

I did irrelevant damage in the end, but I really had no other option. Now I have no clue what he will be up to, but maybe he will go to Heatran so I just Earthquake again.

Yikes the metal tin bird again, and this time it means trouble because a second layer of Spikes is coming my way, limiting my Chain Chomp and other sweepers even more. This is though, the PERFECT opportunity to confuse my opponent and bring down 1 of my opponents walls.

mYSTIK switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).
Pointed stones dug into Garchomp.

Yeah I assumed so, because he has every advantage, and now he has seen my Life Orb so I can't bluff a Choice Scarf. Time to go to my counter wannabe Bronzong.

Nice prediction on his part, gets rid of Bronzong next turn and is able to switch out again to Outrage afterwards where I have no apparent resists (he hasn't seen 2 of my Pokemon yet at this point). Knowing he is stuck though, I jump to Vaporeon, who seems pretty useless at this point.

Another one down, after so many turns, and the battle is tied still. Now I bring in my own Garchomp, because I don't expect him to stay in and Fire Blast it lol, and Chain Chomp will shine once again.

mYSTIK: most random garchomp iv ever seen

Guess he/she doesn't visit Smogon often =P. Now I know Garchomp's job is done, having taken down his two physical walls, he is now dispensable asset to the team. If Spikes and stealth Rock hadn't been down though I would have definately saved him for more action.

And that puts me down on the score again, but this last move worried me as I wanted him to Outrage, but he went with the safer choice and so he was able to keep Garchomp a threat to my team. I go to Bronzong to stall and see what his next moves would be.

Yuk Spiritomb, whom I think is udnerrated. Bronzong has no business in there, and I don't want it to wake up before it dies, so I go to a Pokemon he hasnt seen yet, to force a switch and have him sacrifice something since nothing could switch in safely to Heracross anymore.

Once again a double switch and I'm on the loosing end here, as even Scarfed, my Heracross would surely die to an Outrage after so much residual damage. Good thing though, this fit exactly into my plan to get rid of that Garchomp and go to victory.

And that's that, I hope you enjoyed reading. I'm sorry I'm not Mexico's Next Top Comedian, but I tried to make the narrative interesting and tried to choose an interesting battle to write about.

Thanks for reading, and please leave comments, any and all are appreciated.

Very nice Warstory. Great insight into what was going through your head. Cool to see ChainChomp in action. Every other one i see is Scarf, Scarf, Scarf.

Nice work!

nice story, though from the team, it was pretty obvious you had a ChainChomp-->Heracross set-up. Ending exactly as I thought it would. It would have been more exciting if you had kept the ChainChomp part a secret.

Great battle. I thought you made really good moves, and you outplayed your opponent. Kind of.. sad that your opponent couldn't recognize your ChainChomp, but it was still a good battle, nonetheless.

Congrats on the win btw. :D

I believe your opponent is the person who copied Obi's team then claimed to have never heard of smogon. So that explains his ignorance of chainchomp obviously

Anyway, nice warstory. Interesting insight into what you were thinking

I <3 chain chomp. Even though statistically Salamence is a better mixed sweeper, Chomp has just enough to take down most of his common counters, and stabbed earthquake is a beast.

Nice battle thanks for sharing it with us. GG to bot of you and congrats for getting the win Pablo. Good predictions from both of you :D

Quite a good match. I prefrer UU matches myself, but as no one ever seems to be on (or it's the same person you've battled dozens of times) an OU team is necessary.

I love this battle, you explained very well your strategy, very good plan.
At first i thought: he's gonna be raped by leting the opponent set spikes up and defend. But you magnaged to open a way through his defences.

It's the common story of sweep-prediction vs stall. But if he had predicted chomp's fire blast (not that hard) and switched to heatran, the game would have been highly in his side.

Note: heatran on the switch, then if you're scarfed you'd have switched, if you weren't he would outspeed you and use dragon pulse (assuming choice scarf for heatran) to ohko or make you switch at least.

This goes to show how fast and un-stally the D/P metagame can be, like chess on meth or something.

Both teams had their share of creativity in, and I liked the narration. Good warstory.

I had seen previously Leftovers recovery on his Heatran, thanks to Stealth Rocks, so if Heatran had switched in on Fire Blast, he would've simply been taken down by Earthquake next turn and Garchomp would not have taken Life Orb recoil after activating Heatran's ability so no that would not have made a difference I think.

I passed over lefties, but well he would have switched to a counter, keeping skarmory alive was the point. You played very well, however, and I ejoyed the battle a lot.

Oh Chain Chomp, you grew up so much. *tear*

I thought the storytelling was a little on the boring side and it definitely would have helped if I knew at what health% the Pokemon were. However, I thought it was a good battle and Chain Chomp still seeing use even though it was created when the metagame was hardly developed yet is just great. The thing can singlehandedly cause Obi's stall team to guess (rather than just wall) which is something not a lot of Pokemon can say.

for future reference, no Empoleon ever, ever uses Aqua Jet except for novelty CB sets.
Put Focus Blast on gengar now.

I always kind of brushed aside Chain Chomp as useless outside of theorymon, it's nice to see it action.

Gyro Ball will help your Bronzong a lot, it's a 2hko on scarfchomp iirc

<3 The warstory Pablo. I always enjoy reading your warstories, and I thought the narration was indeed interesting as it showed us how you thought about certain situations and stuff. Keep it up.
