Tournament UPL XI: Commencement Thread

Managers and retains rankings
Take what I say with a grain of salt, I am merely expressing my opinion and you shouldn't take what I say to heart, it's never that deep.
#1 - Choice Bandits: Highlord + Ayu
They just won the last team tournament and if that is any guide to what their performance looks like, then I think they will do just as good as they did a few months ago, if not better. They have some pretty good retains / self-buys in the form of the best GSC, best DPP and top 3 SV as well. Coincidentally, the managers + retains have a good amount of experience in team tournaments so, I think they will come up with a competent draft plan.
#2 - Dangerous Dracovish: Stone Cold + Leru
Dave has made playoffs 3 years in a row (and won in one occasion), surely that amounts to something and is not a coincidence. That being said, the combination of someone as experienced as Dave and someone as versatile as Leru could lead to very good results. The Goat Heart and vani retains cover a lot of ground as well.
#3 - Alolan Mukkers: Reje + March Fires
This one is relative. While I have been told Reje will not self-buy, if he does this team is dropping to #12. Needless to say, tape has been playing Pokemon for ages and is consistent to this day. Not only that but, I've seen his prep style first hand and it's honestly pretty disgusting, nothing to be trifled with. I've also been told nothing but good things of Reje as a manager so, if he stays there I expect good things from this team. Adding to that, have some good potential retains in the form of Lasen, Inspirited and SiTuM.
#4 - Void Villains: Fc + mitana
Fc is someone who has a great deal of experience managing and has had success doing so. His knowledge of the newer gens is one of his biggest assets and I think he's capable of supporting the older ones, even if not on the level of the other managers. Mitana on the other hand seems like he has been more invested in learning in the old gens and has had a pretty good classic run doing so. If the way he helps prep ADV translates to the other gens, I believe this is a very clear play offs candidate. The only reason why I think they are #4 is because I believe mitana doesn't have as much experience managing as the other duos but, that doesn't necessarily mean they won't perform.
#5 - DaReal Drizzlers: Perry + Lunala
This duo has a lot of experience playing the game and managing. Nevertheless, how they do depends more on how active they are and how well they draft, they had some slots that flopped last year and that hopefully we don't see it this year. I also think the Thor retain is risky if he doesn't BW.
#6 - Devastating Dialgas: Mr.378 + Eledyr
Aside from Dave, Mr.378 is probably the manager in this tour with the most experience. That being said, his drafts often do not pan out as he hopes they will. If there was something to criticize, it would be that. Eledyr on the other hand, had a pretty impressive UWC run managing Team France, however, his performance in managing a draft tour is unknown to me. They do have some very strong retains in the form of crying and Fogbound Lake, both players who have seen some spotlight in official tournaments as of late.
#7 - Defiant Durians: Aurora + Drifting
Literal question mark for me, I have never seen either manage. However, I would like to think Aurora does have some experience in the old gens department and from what I've heard she offers good support. Drifting I reckon is newer to the scene so, sadly I am not as informed as I'd like to be when it comes to them. The durians do have some strong retains if they decide to show up and play for them though.
#8 - Manly Melmetal: Inder + GeniusFromHoenn
I think this is the team that could surprise us the most. Both relatively new to participating in tournaments if you compare them to the other managers. I think the performance of this team will have to do a lot with who they draft and how much synergy they have as a team. If they decide to expand and look outwards from their respective national teams, that will determine how good of a team they can build. They have one of the strongest retains in the form of skarph, if he plays for them then that certainly will cover a lot of ground.

Since I am not managing and not playing either (ranking myself would be cringe anyway), I figured it would be beneficial to shed some light on the ORAS signups for this tournament and give my thoughts on some of the names that have signed up. Here are my personal rankings for the ORAS Ubers signups in UPL XI (only considering signups currently on the sheet):
Tier 1 (Best in the Pool)
FatFighter2 - Still quite new to the ORAS Ubers scene and doesn't have many tour games under his belt for the tier, but has thoroughly impressed me every time he has played in general or against me in friendly games. Very sound gameplay coupled with a knack for building really interesting and off the wall teams should get him a top end record conducive to the price tag if he does decide to play ORAS (I think he does not want to?).
Tier 2 (Top End Starter)
London Beats - Very solid and sound player, impressed me a lot leading up to and ever since last UPL with how he can pilot pretty much any team. The tournament results haven't matched that yet for ORAS Ubers (I believe he gets a bit tilted or nervous during his games which means he doesn't always match his test game skill in the actual tour games sometimes) but the process is sound so hopefully the results catch up and he has a great tour there like I think he can and should.
Royal1604 - Newer player to ORAS that impressed me a lot during UPL when he was on my team, went 3-0 and clutched up by winning all the elimination weeks including the finals deciding game (vs FatFighter2). After that he also had a great UWC run in ORAS for team France and has just been a really consistently good player for a while now. Needs to be given quality teams but past that he will finish with a quality record (probably surpassing his 10k priced retention tag).
Tier 3 (Average Starter)
oversway/dominatio/spanishlines - Old ORAS veteran that has been doing this for a long-ass time and needs no introduction. Always brings very good teams and plays a very safe and sound game. Consistently performs in tournaments and is a very hard matchup for anyone who comes up against him. The biggest issue and why he is ranked a bit lower is that I'm not sure how rusty he is (haven't seen him play in over a year) and how in touch with the current ORAS trends he would be (plus there is definitely a chance he starts in SM or another gen instead so who knows). High disparity in possible outcomes, could have the best record in the pool or could flop depending on how in touch he is with the tier.
Qwily - A bit of a newer player that has shown signs and flashes of being good at the tier. Still makes some silly mistakes sometimes but he can definitely play and should start for a team. Expect an average record in this pool with a decent amount of upside.
Tier 4 (Bottom End Starter)
Vileman - Old veteran who hasn't touched ORAS Ubers much in recent years, he has been more involved with OU and official tiers in a tournament capacity in recent times which has led to him being a tad out of touch with the ORAS Ubers metagame. Still a very strong player and would particularly shine if given more up to date teams and techs. Expect a positive record if support is there and he's not using his 2015 squads but expect a lower end record if the teams continue to resemble what he has used in the recent ORAS Ubers tournaments like UWC.
robjr - My dark horse pick to have a great tournament, very sound and competent player overall that gets ranked a bit low because of their lack of experience in ORAS Ubers specifically. Plays a really clean game and is always a very hard person to beat regardless of the situation. Hard to predict in terms of record but carries a ton of upside and could have a fantastic tournament if given the appropriate amount of support and help.
MZ - Not many of you know this but MZ actually starts for "Mconsistently Zunderrated" which is what MZ has always been in Ubers. He is a very skilled player and most of the time he performs well and plays pretty sound games in ORAS Ubers. He of course is 1000x better in his "home" tier of ORAS AG but his skills definitely do translate and he could have another really good year in Ubers if given the chance to do his thing and start for a team.
Tier 5 (High Upside Tour Players without much ORAS Ubers Experience)

I hope both of these guys get a chance to play in this tour, I could easily see both of them performing and having a great year if given the chance and the help from their teams. Both are quality ORAS players and specifically ECat has impressed me the few times I've seen him play ORAS Ubers so I think either of them could be worth a flier as a low-end starter that could potentially turn out to be great or a high-end sub that could come in for a few weeks and pick up the slack.
Tier 6 (Should probably be playing other gens but could sub in/support your ORAS slot)

Vileman - Old veteran who hasn't touched ORAS Ubers much in recent years, he has been more involved with OU and official tiers in a tournament capacity in recent times which has led to him being a tad out of touch with the ORAS Ubers metagame. Still a very strong player and would particularly shine if given more up to date teams and techs. Expect a positive record if support is there and he's not using his 2015 squads but expect a lower end record if the teams continue to resemble what he has used in the recent ORAS Ubers tournaments like UWC.
robjr - My dark horse pick to have a great tournament, very sound and competent player overall that gets ranked a bit low because of their lack of experience in ORAS Ubers specifically. Plays a really clean game and is always a very hard person to beat regardless of the situation. Hard to predict in terms of record but carries a ton of upside and could have a fantastic tournament if given the appropriate amount of support and help.
MZ - Not many of you know this but MZ actually starts for "Mconsistently Zunderrated" which is what MZ has always been in Ubers. He is a very skilled player and most of the time he performs well and plays pretty sound games in ORAS Ubers. He of course is 1000x better in his "home" tier of ORAS AG but his skills definitely do translate and he could have another really good year in Ubers if given the chance to do his thing and start for a team.
Tier 5 (High Upside Tour Players without much ORAS Ubers Experience)

I hope both of these guys get a chance to play in this tour, I could easily see both of them performing and having a great year if given the chance and the help from their teams. Both are quality ORAS players and specifically ECat has impressed me the few times I've seen him play ORAS Ubers so I think either of them could be worth a flier as a low-end starter that could potentially turn out to be great or a high-end sub that could come in for a few weeks and pick up the slack.

This tournament has been the worst tournament for me I've ever played here on smogon, I've never felt this frustrated playing mons. It made all my other tournament matches worse to play because I was tilted and it made me angry in real life.
A combination of terrible team choices, facing stall every week, hard to deal people in the community (for some reason Ubers has the worst playerbase I've seen, it's full of people talking shit about others non-stop), wanting to win for my manager and prove myself in a new meta and as a teammate made this a bad experience to me. Losing 3 out of 5 games while making no real missplay in-game sucks even more. In fact, my biggest missplay was vs London Beats, in a game which I won. Maybe some people on my team disagree, but I'm self conscious enough about my gameplay to stand my point.

Oh please, get over yourself. This tournament and this game are bigger than what you think you're entitled to. If you think Ubers is the worst community then you can choose not to be a part of it. Truth is, we didn't ask and we surely don't care about what you thought about it. You can also choose not to participate Ubers tours, I doubt anyone who your statement is referring to would miss you.
And by the way, I haven't watched all of your matches but I find it hard to believe that records are anything but reflective of one's performance. I may go literally winless this tour and I at the end of the day I blame nobody but myself for my record.
Those were my thoughts about my own participation in the tournament that I wanted to share, I don't need to wait for you to ask or care and your post just reiterates my own lol
