[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 4 onwards

**Price range**: 11-12 points

**Overview**: Tyranitar is primarily drafted for its Sand Stream ability alongside premier sand sweeper Excadrill. It can enable its teammates with the weather and a great set of supporting moves. Its bulk and high Attack allow it to take a plethora of hits and dish out a lot of damage in return. Tyranitar's typing and Special Defense boost from sand also allow it to take a lot of special attacks well. However, it often lends itself to very one-dimensional drafts, since sand is the biggest reason to draft Tyranitar over other options. This often deters drafting teammates that struggle in sand and forces teammates that cover Tyranitar's myriad of weaknesses.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Utility**: With its ability to set sand and access to key utility moves such as Stealth Rock, Knock Off, and Thunder Wave, Tyranitar is often used to support and enable its teammates. It can force progress with its support moves with little need to predict or outplay. Its bulk allows it to pivot in on many neutral or resisted hits and force progress. Smooth Rock is a great option to enable a partner such as Excadrill to sweep by giving it more turns in sand. Even with a utility set, Tyranitar can still do solid damage with its high base Attack, and its Special Defense allows it to switch in on key special threats such as Chi-Yu and Iron Moth to force progress.

**Wallbreaker**: Tyranitar can use a Choice Band to effectively break through opposing defensive cores. Knock Off and Stone Edge are strong STAB moves, and it has a plethora of coverage including Earthquake, elemental punches, Heavy Slam, and even special moves for certain foes.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Knock Off, Stone Edge, Rock Slide

**Setup moves**: Iron Defense, Curse

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rocks, Thunder Wave, Taunt, Roar, Dragon Tail, Foul Play

**Coverage**: Earthquake, High Horsepower, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Heavy Slam, Iron Head, Aerial Ace, Body Press

Niche Moves
========
**Dragon Dance**: Tyranitar's access to Dragon Dance allows it to threaten a potential late-game sweep. Its considerable bulk and wide coverage options allow Tyranitar to break through many defensive cores. However, due to Tyranitar's low base Speed, this set may struggle against fast Pokemon and Encore users.

**Rock Tomb**: This move is primarily useful to support teammates, allowing Tyranitar to get a little chip damage and make certain pivots easier the following turn. Other stat-lowering moves include Bulldoze, Snarl, Breaking Swipe, and Icy Wind, which can be used to similar effect.

**Rest**: When paired with a Chesto Berry, this is a pivotal one-time heal for Tyranitar in matchups where its bulk is extremely important. RestTalk can also work, but it should only be used against more passive teams where more turns can be spent asleep safely. The big issue is wasting either an item and moveslot or two moveslots on this strategy, but it is quite handy if Tyranitar can afford it.

**Special Coverage**: Tyranitar boasts a usable Special Attack stat and a wide array of special coverage moves, such as Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt, which can be useful against targets with low Special Defense, such as Great Tusk and Skarmory.

Common Items
========
**Smooth Rock**: Extending sand is very useful for teammates benefiting from it, such as Excadrill. This item highlights Tyranitar's key niche as the premier sand setter in the format.

**Assault Vest**: This item couples well with Tyranitar's Special Defense boost as a Rock-type in Sandstorm and its considerable natural bulk, allowing it to take many powerful special attacks with ease.

**Choice Band**: Knock Off is a very strong move that consistently forces progress, making Choice Band an easy item to run. Tyranitar also has a high base Attack, access to STAB Stone Edge, and many coverage options for a Choice Band set.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots is useful if entry hazard removal is difficult in a given matchup. Weather setting also becomes easier without the threat of being KOed by hazards.

Niche Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Tyranitar isn't a traditionally good Choice Scarf user due to its low Speed and lack of a pivoting move. This means that a Choice Scarf set can potentially catch foes off guard in a matchup where Tyranitar is otherwise slower than everything and could be KOed quickly without forcing much progress. For example, Pokemon such as Enamorus and Ogerpon-H can OHKO Tyranitar and would otherwise outspeed it, but are also KOed by its Rock-type STAB moves.

**Resistance Berries**: Resistance Berries can be quite useful in catching foes off guard. The only issue is that it is difficult for Tyranitar to KO Fighting-types on the same turn the Berry is activated, so it needs to rely on just using Thunder Wave that turn to stop most threats.

**Leftovers**: Passive HP recovery complements Tyranitar's bulk nicely. It also punishes opponents that might opt to stall out the sand, giving Tyranitar more turns of Leftovers.

Tera
========
Tyranitar is often not the best choice for a Tera Captain. Most Tyranitar teams will be paired with Excadrill, which benefits much more from Terastallization. Also, unless it is Tera Rock, Tyranitar will take damage from sand and lose its Special Defense boost. If it is a Tera user, a Tera type such as Tera Fairy, Flying, or Ghost would be ideal to resist Fighting, or any Tera type that provides a key resistance in a given matchup could be used to leverage Tyranitar's bulk.

Draft Strategy
========
Sand is the best reason to draft Tyranitar by far. Almost every good Tyranitar team should feature Excadrill due to the value Sand Rush Excadrill gains from its presence. In return, Tyranitar provides some valuable traits to its team, such as its Dark typing, great Special Defense, and strong offensive profile, but these are secondary to the value provided by Sand Stream.

**Strong Defensive Synergy**: Tyranitar and Excadrill share several weaknesses such as Fighting, Ground, and Water, so it is important to cover these weaknesses with strong, bulky Pokemon that will regularly come to games. Pokemon that come to mind to fill this role include Latias, Rotom-W, Uxie, and even lower-price Pokemon such as Weezing and Sinistcha.

**Strong Special Attackers**: Tyranitar and Excadrill are both physically offensive threats, so having strong special attackers forces opponents to invest into Special Defense on their defensive Pokemon and applies needed pressure to physically defensive Pokemon. Some examples include Latios, Keldeo, and Serperior.

**Speed**: Even though Excadrill is extremely fast in sand, it is still important to draft other fast Pokemon to handle the metagame effectively and to function outside of sand or in case the weather gets reset. Some examples include Greninja, Sneasler, and Tornadus-T.

**Teammates That Don't Mind the Sand**: Any Pokemon that can mitigate sand damage, such as Pokemon that are immune, Regenerator Pokemon, and glass cannon sweepers that don't care about the damage very much are good to have. It is also best to avoid drafting Pokemon significantly harmed by sand, such as Pokemon reliant on Synthesis and Moonlight for healing.

Checks and Counters
========
**Fighting-types**: Fighting-type foes resist Tyranitar's STAB combination and threaten it super effectively, and Tyranitar doesn't get much to hit Fighting-types super effectively.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Tyranitar is slow, allowing many physically offensive Pokemon such as Great Tusk, Palafin, Garchomp, and Meowscarada to threaten a KO with their strong physical STAB moves. Since Tyranitar has a plethora of weaknesses, many physical attackers can serve as checks.

**Opposing Weather**: Many drafts with Tyranitar will rely on sand being active to enable Excadrill and to rack up chip damage. Opposing weather setters such as Pelipper and Torkoal can set weather on switching in and punish an incoming Tyranitar with super effective coverage moves. Some teams may run weather-setting moves such as Sunny Day and Rain Dance with fast Pokemon or Prankster users to overwrite the weather as well.

Its bulk and high attack allow it to take a plethora of hits and dish out a lot of damage in return. Its typing and Special Defense boost from Sandstorm also allow it to take a lot of special attacks well. (we always mention stuff that holds the mons back in the overview, would say smth alongside the lines of it being very one dimensional in terms of what teams it can fit on bc u only really pick it on sand teams)

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Utility**: With inherent its ability to set sand and key utility moves such as Stealth Rocks, Knock Off, and Thunder Wave, Tyranitar is often used to support and enable other Pokemon on the team. It can force progress with its support moves with little need to predict or outplay. Its bulk allows it to pivot in on many neutral or resisted hits and force progress. Smooth Rock is a great option to enable a partner such as Excadrill to sweep by giving it more turns in Sandstorm. Even on a utility set, Tyranitar can still do solid damage with its STAB moves and other coverage moves with its high base Attack.

**Breaker**: Like in past generations, Tyranitar can still just use a Choice Band and start attacking. Knock Off and Stone Edge are strong STAB moves, and it has a plethora of coverage including Earthquake, elemental punches and Heavy Slam. It can also break with special moves, including dual STAB in Power Gem and Dark Pulse, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Surf. (u can run special tar but iirc usually its attack is so high that even non invested physical attacks do more, imo it moreso uses its coverage options like ice beam / flamethrower to hit pokemon like tusk/skarm that just have lower spdef)

**Specially Defensive**: Tyranitar’s Sand Stream also gives it a 1.5x Special Defense boost while Sandstorm is active, which it can leverage to check key special threats such as Chi-Yu, Iron Moth and Raging Bolt. With an Assault Vest, it can reach even greater special bulk and check even more special attackers with ease. (what differentiates this from utility? imo just delete this bc this is basically just utility imo)

**Setup Sweeper**: Tyranitar’s access to Dragon Dance allows it to threaten a potential late-game sweep. It has considerable bulk and its coverage allows it to fire off strong attacks on many teams with just 3 attacking moves. This set may struggle against fast Choice Scarf Pokemon and Encore users.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Knock Off, Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Dark Pulse, Power Gem, Foul Play (foul play to utility)

**Setup moves**: Dragon Dance, Curse, Iron Defense

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rocks, Thunder Wave, Taunt, Roar, Dragon Tail

**Coverage**: Earthquake, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Heavy Slam, Iron Head, Aerial Ace, Body Press

Niche Moves
========
**Rock Tomb**: This move is primarily useful in giving teammates a short-term leg up, allowing Tyranitar to get a little chip damage and allow certain pivots to be easier the following turn. This is often best when planning to execute a very specific sequence across multiple turns. Tyranitar gets several stat lowering attacks, including Bulldoze, Snarl, Breaking Swipe, and Icy Wind which can be used to a similar effect.

**Sandstorm**: The move Sandstorm will often be horribly redundant with Tyranitar’s ability, but it could be crucial if the opponent has a pokemon with a weather setting ability to overwrite the weather without having to switch Tyranitar out and back in. This option is best against teams that are heavily reliant on a weather condition to function. (too niche)

**Rest**: When paired with a Chesto Berry, this is a pivotal one-time heal for Tyranitar in matchups where its bulk is extremely important. Rest + Sleep Talk can also work, but only against more passive teams where more turns can be spent asleep safely. The big issue is wasting either an item and move slot or two move slots on this strategy, but it is quite handy if Tyranitar can afford it.

**Smack Down**: This could be handy when paired with Earthquake against foes such as Rotom-Wash that might want to pivot in, particularly when the rest of the team is extremely weak to ground. It is also a 100% accurate physical rock type move, but the damage will be extremely underwhelming unless the opponent is 4x weak. (dont rly see the vision here, rotom comes in and clicks wisp and it doesnt rly make sense even for mons like corv imo)

Common Items
========
**Smooth Rock**: Extending Sandstorm is very useful for Excadrill and other teammates, racking up additional chip damage as well. This item highlights Tyranitar’s key niche in being the premier sand setter in the format.

**Assault Vest**: The boost goes a long way when coupled with Tyranitar’s Special Defense boost as a Rock type in Sandstorm. It allows for easier pivoting around these threats which can be pivotal in specific matchups.

**Choice Band**: This is a classic Tyranitar item, and it continues to be a solid choice this generation due to access to a very spammable Knock Off. The extra damage helps Tyranitar trade more favorably which can open up endgame options for its teammates.

**Lum Berry**: This item goes particularly well with Dragon Dance Tyranitar for stopping Thunder Wave, a common counter to such sweepers.

Niche Items
========
**Heavy Duty Boots**: This could be useful if hazard removal is going to be difficult in a given week. Weather setting also becomes easier without the threat of dying to hazards.

**Choice Scarf**: Even though Tyranitar isn’t very fast, this can potentially catch someone off guard in a matchup where Tyranitar is otherwise slower than everything and could die quickly without forcing much progress.

**Chople Berry**: This item could be quite useful in catching a fighting type off guard. The only issue is that it is difficult to KO on the same turn, so Tyranitar needs to rely on just clicking Thunder Wave that turn to stop most threats. (move to common)

**Mirror Herb**: This could be quite useful in checking an opposing setup sweeper, leveraging Tyranitar’s high base stats to win the 1v1 and force progress. For example, Tyranitar can Dragon Dance against an opposing Dragon Dance pokemon to get +2 in attack and speed to threaten a sweep. (too niche)

Tera
========
This pokemon is often not a great Tera Captain. Most Tyranitar teams will be paired with Excadrill, which is going to get a lot more mileage with Tera, and many leagues do not allow both to Tera (true, but primarily focussed on our format so wouldnt include). Also, unless it is Tera Rock, it will take damage from sand and lose its Special Defense boost. If it is a Tera user, a type such as Fairy, Flying, or Ghost would be ideal to resist Fighting, or any type that provides a key resistance in a given matchup that can leverage Tyranitar’s bulk.

Draft Strategy
========
Sand is the best reason to draft Tyranitar by far. Almost every good Tyranitar team should feature Excadrill due to the value Sand Rush Excadrill brings to any given matchup. Tyranitar also provides a dark type and great Special Defense, but these are secondary to the value provided by Sandstorm.

**Strong defensive synergy**: Tyranitar and Excadrill share a few of weaknesses such as (fighting, ground, and water), so it is important to cover these weaknesses with strong/ or bulky pokemon that will regularly come to games.

**Strong special attackers**: Tyranitar and Excadrill are both more physically offensive threats, so breaking special walls is strong special attackers are going to be important to not force Tyranitar into its more niche special sets. (dont mind this being mentioned but i think the more relevant point here is forcing your opponents pokemon to run spdef instead of solely defense to handle the sand threats)

**Speed**: Even though Excadrill is extremely fast in sand, it is still important to draft other fast Pokemon to handle the metagame effectively and to function outside of sand or in case the weather gets reset.

**Teammates that don’t mind the sand(i have no idea what this section should be named LOL but its pretty funny)**: Any pokemon that can mitigate the sand damage, such as pokemon who are immune, Regenerator pokemon, and glass cannon sweepers that don’t care about the damage very much are good to have. Try to avoid drafting anti synergy such as pokemon that rely on Synthesis and Moonlight for healing.

Checks and Counters
========
**Fighting Types**: Fighting resists both of Tyranitar’s STAB moves and its best coverage to hit the typing in return is Aerial Ace. (would just say it does not have strong coverage options for fighting types, but also that they obliterate ttar because of its 4x weakness)

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Tyranitar is somewhat slow, allowing many physically offensive pokemon such as Great Tusk, Palafin, Garchomp, and Meowscarada to threaten a KO with their strong physical STAB moves. Since Tyranitar has a plethora of weaknesses, many physical attackers can serve as checks.

**Opposing Weather**: Many drafts with Tyranitar will rely on Sandstorm being active to enable Excadrill and to rack up chip damage. Opposing weather setters such as Pelipper and Torkoal can set weather on switch in and punish an incoming Tyranitar with super effective coverage moves. Some teams may run weather setting moves such as Sunny Day and Rain Dance with fast Pokemon or Prankster users to overwrite the weather as well.

It is also best to avoid drafting Pokemon significantly harmed by sand, such as Pokemon reliant on Synthesis and Moonlight for healing.

Checks and Counters
========
**Fighting Types**: Fighting resists both of Tyranitar’s STAB moves and threaten its 4x weakness, and it doesn't get much to high hit fighting types super effectively.

I implemented these. There were a couple of lines that I didn't agree with but I edited them to reflect what it seemed like you were going for + what I wanted to the best of my ability. Let me know if I am good to move on here.

[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 4 onwards.

**Price range**: 11-12 points

**Overview**: Tyranitar is primarily drafted for its Sand Stream ability alongside premier sand sweeper Excadrill, and Iit can enable its teammates with the weather and a great set of supporting moves. Its bulk and high attack allow it to take a plethora of hits and dish out a lot of damage in return. Its typing and Special Defense boost from Sandstorm also allow it to take a lot of special attacks well. However, it often lends itself to very one dimensional drafts, since sand is the biggest reason to draft Tyranitar over other options. This often deters drafting teammates that struggle in sandstorm and forces teammates that cover Tyranitar's myriad of weaknesses.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Utility**: With its ability to set sand and access to key utility moves such as Stealth Rocks, Knock Off, and Thunder Wave, Tyranitar is often used to support and enable its teammates. It can force progress with its support moves with little need to predict or outplay. Its bulk allows it to pivot in on many neutral or resisted hits and force progress. Smooth Rock is a great option to enable a partner such as Excadrill to sweep by giving it more turns in Sandstorm. Even on a utility set, Tyranitar can still do solid damage with its STAB moves and other coverage moves with its high base Attack, and its special defense allows it to switch in on key special threats such as Chi-Yu and Iron Moth to force progress.

**Breaker**: Tyranitar can use a Choice Band to effectively break through opposing defensive cores. Knock Off and Stone Edge are strong STAB moves, and it has a plethora of coverage including Earthquake, elemental punches and, Heavy Slam, and even special moves for certain foes. It can also break with access to a wide array of special coverage moves, including Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Surf. However, special movesets are often inferior to physical sets unless the target has a disproportionately low special defense, like Great Tusk or Skarmory.

**Setup Sweeper**: Tyranitar’s access to Dragon Dance allows it to threaten a potential late-game sweep. It has considerable bulk and its coverage allows it to fire off strong attacks on many teams with just 3 attacking moves. Its considerable bulk and wide coverage options allow Tyranitar to break through many defensive cores. However, due to Tyranitar's low base speed, this set may struggle against fast Choice Scarf dont think this is necessary when non booster valiant outspeeds +1 jolly and garchomp outspeeds +1 adamant Pokemon and Encore users.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Knock Off, Stone Edge, Rock Slide

**Setup moves**: Dragon Dance, Curse, Iron Defense

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rocks, Thunder Wave, Taunt, Roar, Dragon Tail, Foul Play

**Coverage**: Earthquake, High Horsepower, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Heavy Slam, Iron Head, Aerial Ace, Body Press

Niche Moves
========
**Rock Tomb**: This move is primarily useful in giving teammates a short-term leg up to support teammates, allowing Tyranitar to get a little chip damage and allow certain pivots to be easier the following turn. This is often best when planning to execute a very specific sequence across multiple turns. absolutely no idea what you mean here Tyranitar gets several Other stat lowering attacks, including Bulldoze, Snarl, Breaking Swipe, and Icy Wind, (ac) which can be used to a similar effect.

**Special coverage**: Tyranitar boasts a usable special attack stat and a wide array of special coverage moves, such as Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt, which can be useful into targets with low special defense such as Great Tusk and Skarmory.

Common Items
========
**Smooth Rock**: Extending Sandstorm is very useful for Excadrill and other teammates, racking up additional chip damage as well teammates benefitting from sand such as Excadrill. This item highlights Tyranitar’s key niche in being the premier sand setter in the format.

**Assault Vest**: This item couples well with Tyranitar’s Special Defense boost as a Rock type in Sandstorm and its considerable natural bulk, allowing it to take many powerful special attacks with ease.

**Choice Band**: Knock off is a very strong move that consistently forces progress, making Choice Band an easy set to run. Tyranitar also has a high base attack and access to STAB Stone Edge and many coverage options for a Choice Band set. Tyranitar's high base Attack and access to strong attacks make it a good Choice Band user.

**Heavy Duty Boots**: This could be useful if hazard removal is going to be difficult in a given week. Weather setting also becomes easier without the threat of dying to hazards. Heavy-Duty Boots are useful to avoid hazard damage from repeated switch-ins, which is especially useful when setting up sand for teammates.

Niche Items
========

**Choice Scarf**: Even though Tyranitar isn’t very fast, this can potentially catch someone off guard in a matchup where Tyranitar is otherwise slower than everything and could die quickly without forcing much progress. Choice Scarf can be useful to outspeed certain offensive Pokemon, especially in matchups where Tyranitar can be overwhelmed by faster offensive foes.

**Resistance Berries**: This item can be quite useful in catching opponents off guard. The only issue is that it is difficult to KO Fighting types on the same turn, so Tyranitar needs to rely on just clicking Thunder Wave that turn to stop most threats. Resistance berries, especially Chople Berry for Pokemon running Fighting-type coverage attacks, can be useful to counteract one of Tyranitar's several weaknesses. However, Tyranitar can stuggle to damage Fighting-types themselves even when equipped with a Chople Berry.

**Lum Berry**: This item goes particularly well with Dragon Dance Tyranitar for stopping Thunder Wave, status moves, a common counter to such sweepers.

**Leftovers**: This could be a nice option in matchups where the opponent might opt to stall out the sand, giving Tyranitar a lot of free recovery. Leftovers can make up for Tyranitar's lack of reliable recovery.

Tera
========
This pokemon is often not a great Tera Captain. Tyranitar is often not the best choice for a Tera Captain. Most Tyranitar teams will be paired with Excadrill, which is going to get a lot more mileage with Tera benefits much more from Terastallization.

========
Sand is the best reason to draft Tyranitar by far. Almost every good Tyranitar team should feature Excadrill due to the value Sand Rush Excadrill brings to any given matchup gains from its presence. In return, Tyranitar also provides a dark type and great Special Defense, but these are secondary to the value provided by Sandstorm. provides some valuable traits to its team, such as its Dark typing, great Special Defense, and strong offensive profile.

**Strong defensive synergy Checks to Water-, Ground-, and Fighting-types**: Tyranitar and Excadrill share several weaknesses such as fighting, ground, and water weaknesses to these typings, so it is important to cover these weaknesses with strong, bulky pokemon that will regularly come to games. Pokemon that come to mind to fill this role include Latias, Rotom-Wash, and Uxie., and even lower price pokemon such as Weezing and Sinischa.

**Strong special attackers**: Tyranitar and Excadrill are both more physically offensive threats, so having strong special attackers forces more special defense investment in prep opponents to invest into Special Defense on their defensive Pokemon and applies needed pressure to physically defensive pokemon. Some examples include Latios, Keldeo and Serperior.

**Speed Control**: Even though Excadrill is extremely fast in sand, it is still important to draft other fast Pokemon to handle the metagame effectively and to function outside of sand or in case the weather gets reset. Some examples include Greninja, Sneasler, and Tornadus-Therian.

**Teammates that don’t mind the sand**: Any pokemon that can mitigate the sand damage, such as pokemon who are immune, Regenerator pokemon, and glass cannon sweepers that don’t care about the damage very much are good to have. It is also best to avoid drafting Pokemon significantly harmed by sand, such as Pokemon reliant on Synthesis and Moonlight for healing.
