UU Thundurus-T

:ss/Thundurus-Therian:

[OVERVIEW]

Thundurus-T's amazing Special Attack, solid Speed, great coverage, and decent typing make it one of the best wallbreakers and pivots in UU. Thundurus-T's pivot set is able to wear down Pokemon like Salamence and Slowking and bring in teammates like Scizor, forming potent VoltTurn cores. Access to coverage options like Grass Knot, Knock Off, Focus Blast, and Psychic allows Thundurus-T to overcome counterplay like Swampert, Chansey, Excadrill, and Amoonguss, making it very difficult to scout its moveset. Thundurus-T also can utilize Nasty Plot to become a ferocious wallbreaker with no counters, being able to muscle past the sturdiest of specially defensive walls like Chansey and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2 and crush balance teams. However, this set isn't too common in the metagame due to its average bulk, meaning it struggles to set up safely against common offensive teams. Even in matchups against bulkier teams, Thundurus-T usually gets inflicted with Toxic poison, allowing it to be played around easily. Because Thundurus-T's weakness to Stealth Rock mandates the use of Heavy-Duty Boots, it can't utilize boosting items like Life Orb to wallbreak easier. It also suffers from an exploitable Speed tier, leaving it vulnerable to being revenge killed by common threats like Nihilego, Zarude, Keldeo, Azelf, and Zygarde-10%. It is also vulnerable to priority from slower threats like Mamoswine. Thundurus-T is often reliant on trading with threats like Salamence and Aegislash with its pivot set due to Volt Switch's low Base Power, making it more vulnerable to the aforementioned revenge killers. Even Pokemon like Amoonguss, Mandibuzz, and Scizor can stay in and trade with the pivot set if needed. Thundurus-T, despite having the coverage moves to get past its checks, cannot fit all of them and has to choose between being checked by at least one of Chansey, Zarude, or Hippowdon.

[SET]
name: Pivot
move 1: Volt Switch / U-turn
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Focus Blast / Grass Knot / Thunderbolt
move 4: Focus Blast / Grass Knot / Knock Off
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Volt Switch allows Thundurus-T to make progress by pivoting while also being a strong STAB attack against the likes of Primarina and Celesteela. Alternatively, U-turn can act as a pivoting move alongside Thunderbolt to better pressure Salamence, Scizor, and Slowking. U-turn also has the benefit of not getting blocked by Ground-types like Hippowdon, but this causes Thundurus-T to struggle even more with fitting necessary coverage. Volt Switch can even be used alongside Thunderbolt if Thundurus-T doesn't need the extra coverage. Psychic is key for hitting Amoonguss, Conkeldurr, and Nihilego super effectively while also being a good midground against Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zygarde-10%, and opposing Thundurus-T. Focus Blast OHKOes Excadrill, Hydreigon, and Mamoswine and prevents Zarude from switching in without fear. Grass Knot beats Swampert and Quagsire and serves as Thundurus-T's only way of breaking past Hippowdon. Knock Off cripples switch-ins like Chansey and Aegislash, allowing Thundurus-T and its teammates to overcome them in the long run. Sludge Bomb can be used over Psychic to hit Tapu Bulu and Assault Vest Tangrowth harder, letting a teammate like Zygarde-10% wallbreak easier. Similarly, Incinerate can be used over Psychic to OHKO Scizor while still hitting Grass-types like Amoonguss super effectively, but it and Sludge Bomb are typically harder to fit. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Thundurus-T to pivot throughout a game and not worry about taking Stealth Rock damage, making it very resilient. 4 Defense EVs allow Thundurus-T to always survive a Life Orb Ice Shard from Adamant Mamoswine from full.

Pivot Thundurus-T best fits on VoltTurn and bulky offense teams that provide many partners that synergize with it well. Scizor is a phenomenal partner for Thundurus-T, revenge killing Nihilego and Zygarde-10% with Bullet Punch and punishing switch-ins to Thundurus-T like Tapu Bulu and Chansey. Other pivots like Zarude and Moltres form potent VoltTurn cores with Thundurus-T as well, bringing it in against Flying- and Water-types like Skarmory, Primarina, and Slowking. Zarude helps pressure Aegislash, Hippowdon, and Nihilego, while Moltres can remove Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Zarude. Slower pivots like Mandibuzz and Slowking also synergize well with Thundurus-T, having the added benefit of taking on revenge killers like Zygarde-10%, Azelf, and Mamoswine. Entry hazard setters like Cobalion and Swampert can set Stealth Rock to soften up checks like Nihilego and Chansey while also forming momentum cores and checking threats such as Zarude and Nihilego. Wallbreakers like Nidoking, Mamoswine, and Keldeo appreciate Thundurus-T bringing them in against Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Nihilego. They also make up for the lack of initial power Thundurus-T can have at times.

[SET]
name: Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Psychic
move 4: Focus Blast
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Nasty Plot allows Thundurus-T to become one of the scariest wallbreakers in the tier, OHKOing or 2HKOing everything at +2. Thunderbolt OHKOes Salamence, Mandibuzz, Scizor, and Rotom-W after a boost. Psychic is key coverage for breaking past Nihilego and Amoonguss. +2 Focus Blast OHKOes Hydreigon and Excadrill and 2HKOes Chansey, Hippowdon, and Assault Vest Tangrowth. While Heavy-Duty Boots is typically run to avoid Stealth Rock chip damage, other items like Life Orb can be used on teams with solid entry hazard control for more wallbreaking power.

Nasty Plot Thundurus-T best fits on hyper offense teams that provide it ample opportunities to sweep, though it can also work on bulky offense teams as a strong early- or late-game powerhouse. Leads like Excadrill, Krookodile, and Scolipede provide entry hazard support to weaken checks like Chansey and Swampert. Excadrill's Rapid Spin can also free up Thundurus-T to run another item over Heavy-Duty Boots. Ribombee can provide Sticky Web support to offset Thundurus-T's vulnerable Speed tier, allowing it to outspeed and KO typically faster threats like Keldeo and Nihilego. Late-game cleaners like Celesteela, Scizor, and Azumarill appreciate Thundurus-T's wallbreaking to clean easier. The former takes advantage of Thundurus-T wearing down Nihilego and luring in Zarude for free setup, while the latter two can force out Nihilego and Zygarde-10%. On bulky offense teams, pivots like Moltres and Zarude can bring in Thundurus-T against checks like Primarina and Skarmory for free setup. Besides providing Stealth Rock support, Jirachi can utilize Healing Wish to patch up Thundurus-T and give it a second chance to wallbreak.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Defog can be used for emergency entry hazard removal, as Thundurus-T fares well against entry hazard setters like Skarmory, but this significantly hinders Thundurus-T's offensive potential due to it losing out on valuable coverage options. An Agility set with a Modest nature allows Thundurus-T to offset its biggest issue in its Speed, but the lack of coverage and Nasty Plot make it much less effective.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Threats**: Thundurus-T has an exploitable Speed tier that leaves it revenge killed by common threats like Nihilego, Cobalion, Keldeo, Lycanroc-D, and Azelf.

**Ground-types**: Zygarde-10% and Mamoswine act as consistent revenge killers to Thundurus-T, though they fail to KO it from full. Swampert and Hippowdon hinder Thundurus-T by deterring Volt Switch and wall it if it lacks Grass Knot, though the former can get worn down over time. Hippowdon's sand also passively wears Thundurus-T down, letting a threat like Azelf or Zarude revenge kill it easier. Quagsire walls Nasty Plot sets thanks to Unaware, though it is vulnerable to Special Defense drops, which put it in 2HKO range of Focus Blast, and also must watch out for Grass Knot.

**Grass-types**: Zarude walls Thundurus-T without Focus Blast and can revenge kill it with ease. Tapu Bulu and Assault Vest Tangrowth can take hits from Thundurus-T and have reliable recovery or Regenerator, but they hate Sludge Bomb and can get muscled through by Nasty Plot.

I would say scout instead since after you know the set you can play around it better if you stacked checks
-Thundurus-T also utilizes a Nasty Plot set to become a ferocious wallbreaker with no counters, being able to muscle past the sturdiest of specially defensive walls like Chansey and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2, allowing it to be one of the biggest threats to balance out there.
-However, Thundurus-T suffers from an exploitable Speed tier, letting it be revenge killed by common threats like Nihilego, Zarude, Azelf, and Zygarde-10%. It also is vulnerable to priority from slower threats like Mamoswine.

Paragraph 1
-Volt Switch allows Thundurus-T to make progress with pivoting while also being a strong STAB attack against the likes of Primarina and Celesteela. Alternatively, U-turn can be used to act as a pivoting move alongside Thunderbolt as STAB to better pressure Salamence and Slowking. id mention that the downside of thunderbolt is that since it's less consistent than volt switch meaning less opportunities to use it
-Psychic is key coverage in hitting Amoonguss, Conkeldurr, and Nihilego super effectively while also being a good midground against Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zygarde-10%, and opposing Thundurus-T.
-Thundurus-T is largely customizable in the last 2 slots. Focus Blast allows Thundurus-T to OHKO Excadrill, Hydreigon, and Mamoswine and prevent Zarude from switching in.
-Grass Knot is another option used to OHKO Swampert and Quagsire.
-Knock Off is great for crippling switch-ins Chansey and Aegislash, allowing Thundurus-T and its teammates to overcome them in the long term.
-Defog can be compressed as an emergency option due to Thundurus-T faring well against entry hazard setters like Skarmory, but this significantly hinders Thundurus-T's offensive potential.
-Heavy-Duty Boots allows Thundurus-T to pivot throughout a game and not worry about taking Stealth Rock chip, making it very resilient letting it act as a potent progress maker. you already sort of make mention of it's ability to make progress with the volt switch point and imo this is what makes thundy really annoying to get chip on
-While it may seem small, 4 Defense EVs actually allow Thundurus-T to always survive a Life Orb Ice Shard from Adamant Mamoswine, and OHKO it with Focus Blast in return. already mentioned focus blast can OHKO Mamoswine

Paragraph 2
-Pivot Thundurus-T best fits on VoltTurn and bulky offense teams that provide many partners to synergize with it well.
-Pivots like Zarude and Moltres form potent VoltTurn cores with Thundurus-T, bringing it in against Flying- and Water-types like Skarmory, Celesteela, Primarina, and Slowking, respectively. maybe a couple too many examples, especially since skarm and steela share the exact same type Zarude helps pressure Aegislash and Nihilego while Moltres can remove Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Zarude that check Thundurus-T.
-Slow pivots like Mandibuzz and Slowking also synergize well with Thundurus-T, having the added benefit of taking on revenge killers like Zygarde-10%, Azelf, and Mamoswine.
-Entry hazard setters like Cobalion and Swampert can set Stealth Rock to soften up checks like Nihilego and Chansey while also forming momentum cores and checking threats like Zarude and Nihilego.
-Wallbreakers like Nidoking, Mamoswine, and Zygarde-10% appreciate Thundurus-T bringing them in against Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Nihilego to wallbreak. They make up for the lack of initial power pivot Thundurus-T can have at times.

-Sludge Bomb can be useful for KOing Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth, but typically Thundurus-T's other coverage moves are more valuable as it can just pivot out against these threats.
-An Agility set allows Thundurus-T to offset its biggest issue in Speed, but the lack of coverage and Nasty Plot makes this much less effective.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Threats and Priority**: Thundurus-T has an exploitable Speed tier that causes it to be revenge killed by many common threats like Nihilego, Zarude, Zygarde-10%, and Azelf. Priority from the likes of Lycanroc-D and Mamoswine can pick off Thundurus-T after it has been chipped.

**Various Walls**: Chansey, Aegislash, and Assault Vest Tangrowth can take Thundurus-T's attacks well, though they hate Knock Off from the pivot set and can be muscled through by Nasty Plot. Tapu Bulu, especially defensive variations, counter Thundurus-T well, being able to take +2 Psychic's and pressure it back while also having reliable recovery. Swampert checks Thundurus-T well, though it has to watch out for Grass Knot.

Thundurus-T also utilizes a Nasty Plot set to become a ferocious wallbreaker with no counters, being able to muscle past the sturdiest of specially defensive walls like Chansey and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2, becoming one of the biggest threats to balance out there. However, this set isn't too common in the metagame due to its only average bulk, meaning it struggles to set up safely against common offensive teams. might wanna comment that it can struggle to find set-up opportunities that don't involve taking a Toxic in the fatter mus, allowing it to be played around fairly decently despite its enormous threat Thundurus-T's weakness to Stealth Rock mandates the use of Heavy-Duty Boots, which means it can't utilize boosting items like Life Orb to wallbreak easier. Thundurus-T suffers from an exploitable Speed tier, leaving it prone to being revenge killed by common threats like Nihilego, Zarude, Keldeo, Azelf, and Zygarde-10%. Volt Switch allows Thundurus-T to make progress with pivoting while also being a strong STAB attack against the likes of Primarina and Celesteela, though its power is much desired. Alternatively, U-turn can act as a pivoting move alongside Thunderbolt as STAB to better pressure Salamence, Scizor, and Slowking. U-turn also has the benefit of not getting blocked by Ground-types like Hippowdon, though Thundurus-T struggles to fit more coverage. This bit doesn't make much sense to me nthe way its worded, because in a sense wouldn't you run u-turn because you can't fit the coverage for hippo not the over way around? would reword this a bit cause its confusing to read Volt Switch can even be used alongside Thunderbolt for strong pivoting and power if Thundurus-T doesn't need the extra coverage. Psychic is key for hitting Amoonguss, Conkeldurr, and Nihilego super effectively, while also being a good midground against Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zygarde-10%, and opposing Thundurus-T. Focus Blast allows Thundurus-T to OHKO Excadrill, Hydreigon, and Mamoswine and prevent Zarude from switching in. Meanwhile, Grass Knot beats Swampert and Quagsire. It is also the only way to break past Hippowdon. Knock Off cripples switch-ins like Chansey and Aegislash, allowing Thundurus-T and its teammates to overcome them in the long term. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Thundurus-T to pivot throughout a game and not worry about taking Stealth Rock chip, making it very resilient. While it may seem small, 4 Defense EVs actually allow Thundurus-T to always survive a Life Orb Ice Shard from Adamant Mamoswine.

Pivot Thundurus-T best fits on VoltTurn and bulky offense teams that provide many partners to synergize with it well. Scizor is a phenomenal partner for Thundurus-T, forming VoltTurn cores that can vortex the entire tier. Scizor revenge kills Nihilego and Zygarde-10% with Bullet Punch and can punish switch-ins to Thundurus-T like Tapu Bulu and Chansey. Slow pivots like Mandibuzz and Slowking also synergize well with Thundurus-T, having the added benefit of taking on revenge killers like Zygarde-10%, Azelf, and Mamoswine. Entry hazard setters like Cobalion and Swampert can set Stealth Rock to soften up checks like Nihilego and Chansey, while also forming momentum cores and checking threats like Zarude and Nihilego. Wallbreakers like Nidoking, Mamoswine, and Keldeo appreciate Thundurus-T bringing them in against Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Nihilego to wallbreak. They make up for the lack of initial power Thundurus-T can have at times.

Nasty Plot allows Thundurus-T to become one of the scariest wallbreakers in the tier, OHKOing or 2HKOing everything at +2. Thunderbolt allows Thundurus-T to easily KO Salamence, Mandibuzz, Slowking, and Rotom-W after a boost. Psychic is key coverage in breaking past Nihilego and Amoonguss. Focus Blast lets Thundurus-T OHKO Hydreigon and Excadrill and 2HKO Chansey, Hippowdon, and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2. While Heavy-Duty Boots are typically run to avoid Stealth Rock chip, other items like Life Orb and Leftovers can be used on teams with solid entry hazard control for more breaking power or better longevity in Thundurus-T mirrors, respectively. don't think leftovers really deserves a mention given how reliable you have to be with the hazard control for it to be a positive addition, over boots, i'd only rly consider running offensive items like LO and only when i'm runnig it on HO myself, otherwise always boots for me. even charti feels more appealing if i'm not running boots honestly.

Nasty Plot Thundurus-T best fits on hyper offense teams that provide it ample opportunities to sweep, though it can also work on bulky offense teams as a strong early or late-game powerhouse. Leads like Excadrill, Krookodile, and Scolipede provide entry hazard support with Stealth Rock and Spikes to weaken checks like Chansey and Swampert. Excadrill’s Rapid Spin support can also free up Thundurus-T to run another item over Heavy-Duty Boots. Ribombee can provide Sticky Web support to offset Thundurus-T’s vulnerable speed tier, allowing it to outspeed and KO typically faster threats like Keldeo and Nihilego. Late-game cleaners like Galarian Moltres, Celesteela, Scizor, and Azumarill appreciate Thundurus-T breaking giant holes in the enemy team for them to clean easier. The former two take advantage of Thundurus-T wearing down Nihilego and luring in Zarude for free setup, while the latter two can force out Nihilego and Zygarde-10%.

Sludge Bomb can be used to break past Tapu Bulu and Assault Vest Tangrowth, letting a teammate like Zygarde-10% wallbreak easier. However, Thundurus-T struggles to fit it and a teammate like Scizor can beat the aformentioned threats. Incinerate can be used to OHKO Scizor while still doing solid damage to Steel- and Grass-types, but like Sludge Bomb Thundurus-T struggles to fit it compared to other moves. tbh i would probably bump both these up to mentions on the pivot set, could keep sludge as a OO for NP if you wanted but i think they both have enough use cases to justify being mentions. up to you though. Definitely clarify which moveslot you'd run them in though, presumably Psychic most of time since they retain the amogus coverage Defog can be compressed as emergency entry hazard removal as Thundurus-T fares well against entry hazard setters like Skarmory, but this significantly hinders Thundurus-T's offensive potential. An Agility set with a Modest Nature allows Thundurus-T to offset its biggest issue in Speed, but the lack of coverage and Nasty Plot makes it much less effective.

Checks and Counters
===================

Swampert and Hippowdon can hinder Thundurus-T by deterring Volt Switch and wall it if it lacks Grass Knot, though the former gets worn down over time. Hippowdon's Sand Stream also can passively wear Thundurus-T down, letting a threat like Azelf or Zarude revenge kill it easier. Throw a quaggers mention in here too for ability to counter NP unless it gets spdef dropped by psychic or chipped into range of 2 fblasts.

**Grass-types**: Zarude walls Thundurus-T without Focus Blast and can revenge kill it with ease. Tapu Bulu and Assault Vest Tangrowth can take hits from Thundurus-T and have reliable recovery or Regenerator, but they hate a potential Sludge Bomb and can get muscled through by Nasty Plot.

[OVERVIEW]

Thundurus-T is a powerful pivot and wallbreaker. Its amazing special attack, solid speed, (Stats aren't capitalized unless they're shortened like "Atk" or "SpDef", but these shouldn't be in analyses, so it's just "attack" and "special defense".) great coverage, and decent typing makes it one of the toughest Pokemon to handle defensively. Thundurus-T often utilizes a pivot set to wear down Pokemon like Salamence and Slowking and bring in teammates like Scizor, forming potent VoltTurn cores that can vortex (I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "vortex", so you should probably replace it with a synonym. You might mean "take down", in that case, I'd use something like "obliterate" or the like.) the entire tier. Access to coverage options like Grass Knot, Knock Off, Focus Blast, and Psychic allow Thundurus-T to overcome counterplay like Swampert, Chansey, Excadrill, and Amoonguss, making it very difficult to scout its moveset. Thundurus-T also utilizes a Nasty Plot set Nasty Plot (Any set with Nasty Plot is a "Nasty Plot set", so it's a bit repetitive.) to become a ferocious wallbreaker with no counters, being able to muscle past the sturdiest of specially defensive walls like Chansey and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2, becoming one of the biggest threats to balance out there. However, this set isn't too common in the metagame due to its only average bulk, meaning it struggles to set up safely against common offensive teams. Even in matchups against bulkier teams it ends up taking a Toxic, allowing it to be played around easily. Because of Thundurus-T's weakness to Stealth Rock mandates the use of Heavy-Duty Boots, which means (You've used "Thundurus-T" at the beginning of many sentences, and yes I know it's about Thundurus-T, but even then you want some variety to start of your senteneces.) it can't utilize boosting items like such as (You might want some variety.) Life Orb to wallbreak easier. Thundurus-T It also (Same as before) suffers from an exploitable speed tier, leaving it prone to being revenge killed by common threats like Nihilego, Zarude, Keldeo, Azelf, and Zygarde-10%. It also is vulnerable to priority from slower threats like Mamoswine. Thundurus-T is often reliant on trading with threats like Salamence and Aegislash for its pivot set due to Volt Switch's low base power, causing it to take chip damage that makes it more vulnerable to the aforementioned revenge killers. Even Pokemon like Amoonguss, Mandibuzz, and Scizor can stay in and trade with the pivot set if needed. Thundurus-T, despite having the coverage to get past its checks, cannot fit all of them (RC) and will often choose being limited by at least one of Chansey, Zarude, or Hippowdon.

Volt Switch allows Thundurus-T to make progress with by (Yes, nothing was wrong with your sentence, but the word "with" here, at first, made me assume you meant "with a Pokemon" so "by" removes any ambiguity.) pivoting while also being a strong STAB attack against the likes of Primarina and Celesteela, though its power is much desired. Alternatively, U-turn can act as a pivoting move alongside Thunderbolt as STAB to better pressure Salamence, Scizor, and Slowking. U-turn also has the benefit of not getting blocked by Ground-types like Hippowdon, though but doing this makes (You don't sound repetitive-you used "though" a sentence ago.) Thundurus-T struggles struggle to fit more coverage. Volt Switch can even be used alongside Thunderbolt for strong pivoting and power if Thundurus-T doesn't need the extra coverage. Psychic is key for hitting Amoonguss, Conkeldurr, and Nihilego super effectively, while also being a good midground against Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zygarde-10%, and opposing Thundurus-T, (AC) hence it being the only move not recommended to be substituted. (In my opinion, this stresses the importance of Psychic but is your choice to implement or not.) Focus Blast allows Thundurus-T to OHKO Excadrill, Hydreigon, and Mamoswine and prevent Zarude from switching in without fear. Meanwhile, Grass Knot beats Swampert and Quagsire. It is also the only way to break past Hippowdon. Knock Off cripples switch-ins like Chansey and Aegislash, allowing Thundurus-T and its teammates to overcome them in the long term. Sludge Bomb can be used over Psychic to break past Tapu Bulu and Assault Vest Tangrowth, letting a teammate like Zygarde-10% wallbreak easier. Similarly, Incinerate, (AC) with its low base power of 60, (AC) (This gives an extra reason why it's harder to fit.) can be used over Psychic to OHKO Scizor and retain coverage for other Grass-types like Amoonguss, but these moves are typically harder to fit. Entry hazard setters like Cobalion and Swampert can set Stealth Rock to soften up checks like Nihilego and Chansey, while also forming momentum cores and checking threats like such as (Variety.) Wallbreakers like Nidoking, Mamoswine, and Keldeo, (AC) and slower ones like, (AC) Nidoking, (AC) and Mamoswine (Nidoking and Mamoswine appreciate its pivoting capabilities because they are slow.) appreciate Thundurus-T bringing them in against Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Nihilego to wallbreak. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Thundurus-T to pivot throughout a game and not worry about taking Stealth Rock chip damage, making it very resilient. While it may seem irrelevant, 4 Defense EVs actually allow Thundurus-T to always survive a Life Orb Ice Shard from Adamant Mamoswine from full.

Pivot Thundurus-T best fits on VoltTurn and bulky offense teams that provide many partners tohat synergize with it well. Entry hazard setters like Cobalion and Swampert can set Stealth Rock to soften up checks like Nihilego and Chansey, while also forming momentum cores and checking threats such as Zarude and Nihilego.

Thunderbolt allows Thundurus-T to easily OHKO Salamence, Mandibuzz, Slowking, and Rotom-W after a boost. Psychic is key coverage infor breaking past Nihilego and Amoonguss. Focus Blast lets Thundurus-T OHKO Hydreigon and Excadrill and 2HKO Chansey, Hippowdon, and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2. While Heavy-Duty Boots are typically run to avoid Stealth Rock chip damage, other items like Life Orb can be used on teams with solid entry hazard control for more breaking power.

Nasty Plot Thundurus-T best fits on hyper offense teams that provide it ample opportunities to sweep, though it can also work on bulky offense teams as a strong early- or late-game powerhouse. Leads like Excadrill, Krookodile, and Scolipede provide entry hazard support with Stealth Rock and Spikes, respectively, to weaken checks like Chansey and Swampert. Excadrill’s Rapid Spin support can also free up Thundurus-T to run another item over Heavy-Duty Boots. Ribombee can provide Sticky Web support to offset Thundurus-T’s vulnerable sSpeed tier, allowing it to outspeed and KO typically faster threats like Keldeo and Nihilego. Late-game cleaners like Celesteela, Scizor, and Azumarill appreciate Thundurus-T breaking giant holes in the enemy team for them to clean easier.

Defog can be compresused for emergency entry hazard removal, as Thundurus-T fares well against entry hazard setters like Skarmory, but this significantly hinders Thundurus-T's offensive potential, as it loses out on valuable coverage options. An Agility set with a Modest Nature allows Thundurus-T to offset its biggest issue in Speed, but the lack of coverage and Nasty Plot makes it much less effective.

Swampert and Hippowdon hinder Thundurus-T by deterring Volt Switch and wall it if it lacks Grass Knot, though the former can gets worn down over time. Hippowdon's Sand Stream also can passively wear Thundurus-T down, letting a threat like Azelf or Zarude revenge kill it easier. Quagsire walls the Nasty Plot sets thanks to Unaware, though it is prone to SpDef drops and can get in range of 2 Focus Blaststhat put it in range of a Focus Blast 2HKO.

[OVERVIEW]

Thundurus-T's amazing Special Attack, solid Speed, great coverage, and decent typing make it one of the best wallbreakers and pivots in UU. Thundurus-T's pivot set is able to wear down Pokemon like Salamence and Slowking and bring in teammates like Scizor, forming potent VoltTurn cores that can vortex the entire tier. Access to coverage options like Grass Knot, Knock Off, Focus Blast, and Psychic allows Thundurus-T to overcome counterplay like Swampert, Chansey, Excadrill, and Amoonguss, making it very difficult to scout its moveset. Thundurus-T also can utilizes Nasty Plot to become a ferocious wallbreaker with no counters, being able to muscle past the sturdiest of specially defensive walls like Chansey and Assault Vest Tangrowth at +2,(RC) making it one of the biggest threats to balance teams out there and threaten balance teams. However, this set isn't too common in the metagame due to its average bulk, meaning it struggles to set up safely against common offensive teams. Even in matchups against bulkier teams, it Thundurus-T usually gets inflicted with Toxic poison, allowing it to be played around easily. Because Thundurus-T's weakness to Stealth Rock mandates the use of Heavy-Duty Boots, it can't utilize boosting items like Life Orb to wallbreak easier. It also suffers from an exploitable Speed tier, leaving it prone vulnerable to being revenge killed by common threats like Nihilego, Zarude, Keldeo, Azelf, and Zygarde-10%. Thundurus-T, despite having the coverage moves to get past its checks, cannot fit all of them and has to choose to be between being checked by at least one of Chansey, Zarude, or Hippowdon.

Volt Switch allows Thundurus-T to make progress by pivoting while also being a strong STAB attack against the likes of Primarina and Celesteela. Alternatively, U-turn can act as a pivoting move alongside Thunderbolt as the dedicated Electric-type STAB to better pressure Salamence, Scizor, and Slowking. U-turn also has the benefit of not getting blocked by Ground-types like Hippowdon, but this causes Thundurus-T to struggle even more with fitting necessary coverage. Volt Switch can even be used alongside Thunderbolt for strong pivoting and power if Thundurus-T doesn't need the extra coverage. Psychic is key for hitting Amoonguss, Conkeldurr, and Nihilego super effectively while also being a good midground against Pokemon like Tangrowth, Zygarde-10%, and opposing Thundurus-T. Focus Blast allows Thundurus-T to OHKOes Excadrill, Hydreigon, and Mamoswine and prevents Zarude from switching in without fear. Meanwhile,(RC) Grass Knot beats Swampert and Quagsire. It is also the only way for Thundurus-T to break past Hippowdon. Grass Knot beats Swampert and Quagsire and serves as Thundurus-T's only way of breaking past Hippowdon. Knock Off cripples switch-ins like Chansey and Aegislash, allowing Thundurus-T and its teammates to overcome them long-term in the long run. Sludge Bomb can be used over Psychic to hit Tapu Bulu and Assault Vest Tangrowth harder, letting a teammate like Zygarde-10% wallbreak easier.
