The State of the Spiderman Franchise

According to this link, Spiderman 4 is no longer in the works. The long awaited addition to the critically acclaimed franchise will not be coming, and instead, the people at Sony will be rebooting the series entirely. Tobey Maguire will no longer be the Spiderman we have all come to know and love, and the new installment will go back to his roots in High School, with director Jamie Vanderbilt taking over. Despite the movie disaster that was Spiderman 3, the film drew in quite a lot of revenue and there were many possible routes that the series could have gone. There are going to be inevitable comparisons to the first Spiderman movie because it will be an origin story, but as a fan, I hope that they do not stray too far from the origin, but have enough differences for it to not be considered just a remake.

If there are any Spidey fans around, what are your thoughts?

It's stupid to restart the series so soon after this one has finished. They'd be better off taking up a different Marvel hero, assuming they're not going to try for a tie-in to the Avengers movie that's coming.

This might be a smart move. Without having to rely on the previous versions of characters (Green Goblin, Venom), they can reboot these characters with either their classic or Ultimate versions. They can also bring in a more Ultimate-Marvel feel to it, since Nick Fury can be represented by Samuel L now. Finally, it brings focus on the other Marvel projects in the works (namely Thor, Captain America, Ant-Man, and Runaways). My only real concern is that a Venom movie was being talked about, and how would this affect it.
