Project SV OU: The Next Best Thing (Week 11: Iron Moth) (Votings Open)

Status
Not open for further replies.
The voting phase for week 1 is now over. The winner is Savouras with Fairy Tusk! Congrats; your set has been added to the Hall of Fame in the OP.

As the host I have decided to not enter my own sets into the competition. However, I will post one after voting phase just for fun and it will not be in the Hall of Fame.

Great Tusk @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fighting / Ghost
EVs: 4 Atk / 4 Def / 248 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Close Combat / Rapid Spin
- Taunt
- Endeavor

This set is designed to function as a super-fast lead; no unboosted mon can outspeed it due to the Booster Energy. It also scares out anti-leads fearing a speed-boosted max attack Great Tusk. Close Combat vs Rapid Spin depends on whether the player prefers a powerful attack or extra utility. In order to ensure its speed is boosted, only 4 EVs can go into attack and defense. The rest is thrown into special defense since having extra HP isn’t helpful for Endeavor, and happens to give enough bulk to always tank Timid Specs Dragapult’s Draco Meteor. Even Timid non-Specs Iron Valiant only has a 50% to OHKO with Moonblast. Tera Fighting boosts Close Combat even further while Tera Ghost can be used to spinblock.

Week 2: Dragonite

:sv/Dragonite:

Dragonite is one of OU’s premier attackers, making great use of Dragon Dance alongside Tera Normal Extreme Speed and its excellent coverage options to smash through opponents. With the recent departure of Shed Tail, Dragonite now finds itself without a major setup opportunity yet also without Orthworm as a hard check. What will be The Next Best Thing?

Rest Bulky DD

Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 144 HP / 252 Atk / 112 Spe
Tera Type: Normal
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Earthquake
- Rest

Here there is a variation of the classic Bulky DD set, but with Rest. Rest is an underrated, but powerful move here because we can make good use of Multiscale to ensure the survivability of Dragonite. Also, in this generation the mechanic of Terastallizing adds a nice amount of unpredictability defensively speaking, so changing your type can allow to take immune/resisted hits with little prediction. Rest has the advantage of getting rid of detrimental status, and to recharge all the hp bar.
Rest allows to change the playstyle of Dragonite, but it allows more staying power in front of detrimental status that can force Dragonite out.

Heal Bell (Chansey/Blissey) support is appreciated to use this set at its full potential, but in general getting rid of burn/par is always a good thing to have.

Reserving choice specs

Dragonite @ Choice Specs
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Flying / Fairy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt / Tera Blast

Admittedly, part of what makes this guy work is surprise factor, but STAB Hurricane is no joke. It makes short work of Amoonguss and is a really good neutral option. Draco is too good to pass up. Fire Blast shreds steels. Thunderbolt is there for PEX and Dondozo, alternatively Tera into Fairy and have the best Fairy type in the tier not named Hatterene

Silk Scarf Dragonite

Dragonite @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 Atk / 104 SpA / 152 Spe
Lonely Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Hurricane
- Earthquake

This set was used in hyper offensive teams over standard 3 atks or encore. It has extremely strong priority with silk scarf boosted espeeds that can ohko cyclizar, 2ko max hp azu, ohko moth, roarin moon at +1 and more. Physdef tusk is ohkoed by this spread and the speedtier hits 351 speed at +1 outrunning Timid Iron Moth. Team however needs to support this dnite set with proper lead against common stealth rockers so u can prevent em from goin up or even have an eject button hatterene partnered with it which not only bounces back rocks but is great vs Ting Lu and Dragons. I have been smoked by this in high ladder many times so i had to get on the silk scarf dnite train myself.

Reserving tera steel dd.
Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Fire Punch/ Ice Spinner
- Earthquake
- Extreme Speed
this is basically your average Dragonite but with a defensive tera instead of offensive. Steel is a great typing for dnite to change to because of how steel resists all of dragonite's weaknesses and Dragonite resists all of steel's weaknesses. The reason you could run either ice spinner of fire punch is because when you're steel your tusk matchup gets worse so you might want the ability to hit it super effectively, as well as hitting amoonguss harder.

Rain Abuser Dnite

Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal/Flying/Electric
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Earthquake
- Hurricane
- Thunder
- Extreme Speed

Think of a typical rain team and then think of the OU mons it might struggle to break past
Water absorb Clodsire
Amoongus
Dondozo
Terra Water Garg/Great tusk
just off the top of my head

This Dnite manages to break past all those problems allowing rain teams to progress in a match
4 Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Clodsire: 278-328 (60 - 70.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Dragonite Thunder vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Dondozo: 310-366 (61.5 - 72.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Dragonite Thunder vs. 252 HP / 100 SpD Tera Water Garganacl: 214-254 (52.9 - 62.8%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Dragonite Thunder vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tera Water Great Tusk: 362-426 (83.4 - 98.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Dragonite Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 84 SpD Amoonguss: 356-422 (82.4 - 97.6%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

On top of this Dnite also offers invaluable defensive utility as a water and grass resist acting as a switch in to threatening mons such as Breloom while still potentially serving as an anti sweep mon with multiscale+Extreme speed, alongside this with its vast movepool it manages to leave serious dents in teams especially while in the rain, Hurricane is no joke.

Substitute bulky Dragonite
Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots/Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 32 HP / 252 Atk / 112 SpD / 112 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Extreme Speed
- Substitute

Substitute Dragonite helps it to set up without the fear of being statused against pokemons like rotom wash or amoongus who usually try to come on it and try to burn or put it to sleep, almost nullifying it's presence from the game. But if Dragonite sets up a substitute(even though it loses multiscale)then defensive rotom wash can't do anything against it or amoongus can't out it to sleep anymore and both of them get 2hkoed by +1 Tera normal extreme speed. The 112 spdef evs allows it to still be behind a substitute even after rotom uses volt switch.Hatterene can't paralyze with nuzzle anymore and even after using draining kiss it still won't break the substitute.Torkoal and clodsire just sit there and do nothing against a substitute.Garganacal can't break sub with salt cure if Dragonite has turn into a normal type.
The ev spreads are just the same for bulky dd with 252 attack adamant at +1 with Tera normal 1hko or 2hkoeing most of the pokemons in the tier.Speed Evs are just to outspeed dragapult and scarf Gholdengo at +2.Spdef Evs are to not get your sub broken by volt switch or draining kiss and the rest are in HP as usual. Some people can even try running leftovers on this set but then you have to keep hazards away from your team.

Bulky Special Attacker Nite:

Dragoran (Dragonite) (M) @ Covert Cloak / Leftovers / Heavy Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Surf
- Thunderbolt / Thunder
- Roost

Usual answers to Physical Nite collapse to this one, like Dondozo, Corviknight or Clear Smog Amoonguss. At the same time it checks non Ice Spinner Great Tusk very well and forces Garganacl to Tera in order to not be smashed by Surf. Tera Water allows to hit Garganacl harder and also be a semi reliable answer for Floatzel and other Rain threats. At the same time, it can be a Rain abusser too. 16 Speed EVs allow to outspeed Adamant Azumarill. Overall, every Non Band Nite I have used this Gen was some variation of this one, its way better than DD.

Defensive nite

Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost
- Fire Spin
- Encore / Thunder Wave
- Hurricane

D- nite is a great sponge, being able to easily beat tusk- the current most common Mon, it can trap and kill hazard setting Mons with encore + fire spin, or stop offensive Mons with t- wave. Even better, the opponent will switch in their unaware Mons while you trap and kill them ( especially dondozo)

Classic Substitute Shuffler™️
:bw/dragonite:

Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots/Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Steel/Water/Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Substitute
- Extreme Speed/ Tera Blast
- Dragon Tail

Remember this set used back in BW2? This set is great on defensive hazard stacking teams such as HS balance and HSS (hazard stack stall). You would set up a sub. Oh, and you will lure in :Dondozo:. After that, use dragon tail, racking up hazard damage. Lefties can be used if you have something like :cyclizar: that can reliably remove hazards. Otherwise use boots. Then, as they become weakened, spam Espeed to clean up. Tera Steel Blast can be used against fairies such as :iron valiant: but ESpeed is better overall.

PARTNERS
:sv/ting lu: :sv/dragonite:

Ting Lu is a natural partner that acts as a bastion, absorbing many hits and whirlwinding away, and setting up hazards. In stall, you could even use rest, making Ting Lu last MUCH longer.

:sv/great tusk: :sv/dragonite:

Defensive tusk can remove hazards, allowing dragonite to run lefties. Not only that, it also has knock off to remove boots and can even set up rocks itself.

:sv/meowscarada: :sv/dragonite:

Meowscarads may seem weird given her low bulk, but she can spike. Not only that, she can spam knock off, removing boots.

:sv/cyclizar: :sv/dragonite:

With the combination of Regenerator and Rapid Spin, cyclizar can repeatedly clear hazards. It also has knock off to remove boots.

2 TEAM STRUCTURES

STALL STRUCTURE
:sv/alomomola: :sv/cyclizar: :sv/ting lu: :sv/dragonite:

Alomomola @ Heavy-Duty Boots/Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Whirlpool
- Chilling Water
- Protect

Cyclizar @ Heavy-Duty Boots/Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Steel/Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Bold Nature
- Knock Off
- Rapid Spin
- Draco Meteor
- Overheat

Ting Lu @ Leftovers
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Steel/Ghost/Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Rest
- Whirlwind
- Earthquake

This structure can be used on stall teams. Alomomola and Cyclizar form a double regenerator core, helping to shrug off salt cures and increasing longevity. Ting Lu can spam spikes, whirlwinding to cause even more havoc. Cyclizar can spam knock and remove hazards. One benefit of dragonite to stall teams is that it handles grasses, which stall generally struggles with.

BALANCED STRUCTURE
:sv/great tusk: :sv/ting lu: :sv/rotom wash: :sv/dragonite:

Great Tusk @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ground/whatever
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Rapid Spin
- Headlong Rush
- Close Combat

Ting Lu @ Leftovers
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Whirlwind
- Earthquake

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 Def/ 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Thunder Wave
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt

This core is more balanced. Ting Lu can spam hazards and phase (again). Great tusk knocks off and clears hazards. Rotom-Wash can spam paralysis (resulting in sinister combinations with whirlwind and dragon tail)

Wrap God

Dragonite
Item: Leftovers/ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Wrap
- Earthquake / Body Press
- Extreme Speed

While at first glance this set may seem similar too the Fire Spin set listed above, its got a bit more of nefarious side too it. So fun fact, Terastilization buffs moves of the same type that are below base 60 to base 60, as long as they are not multi hit or priorty moves. Thus Wrap, a base 15 BP, becomes base 60. This can change the tide drastically such as...
0 Atk Dragonite Wrap vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Great Tusk: 11-14 (2.9 - 3.7%) -- possible 7HKO after trapping damage
0 Atk Tera Normal Dragonite Wrap (60 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Great Tusk: 67-79 (18 - 21.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after trapping damage
And this calc didn't account for hazards.

While you don't need the Tera to make this set viable, having it active not only buffs your wrap, but you still have access to a STAB extreme speed for clean up. When partnered with mons that widdle down the team like Glimora, or Hazard stacking comps, the damage adds up over time. Furthermore, Dnite's Typing is already good defensively, bar Ice attacks. As stated before, you don't need to Tera, so this can work against fighting types quite well, and allow you to clean up problomatic Choice users that are locked into EQ.

Leftovers is the preferred choice but you can be greedy with damage and use Rocky helmet. Earthquake allows for ideal coverage so it isn't completely walled by Ghosts, but Body Press can churn out some great damage and catch unsuspecting Kingambits off guard. As mentioned, Ghosts are this sets primary weakness, so having partners that can pick them off are a must.
