The Next Best Thing is a project where the users can submit & search for various creative but viable Pokemon sets, utilising the power of various underlooked & unexpected moves/items, or a combination of both in a set.

Here, you'll find many sets that might seem vague, but in reality carves out a niche in this metagame. These sets are excellent at acting as a surprise factor, which can totally change the the match.

You may also find how potent a Pokemon can be by looking, playing & even creating some out-of-the-box sets, that are definitely unworthy at first sight.

The sets here posted should obviously be viable, avoiding jokes such as Choice Band Blissey that can't be taken serious. Posting meme sets will also drive the host crazy.

Before submitting any set, you must read the Procedures, Rules & Regulations of the forum.

  • Every cycle (15 days), a new Pokemon will be chosen for participants to create a new, creative yet effective sets.
  • All the existing sets (or WIPs) on the Smogdex are disallowed.
  • The participants will get 7 days to submit their sets in this forum.
  • Voting will be held in the next week.
  • All the winning sets will be kept in the Hall of Fame (see next reply).

  • Be as creative as possible, but your creativity must also show some viability.
  • You may only post 1 set per cycle.
  • You are not allowed to take sets from Smogdex & WIPs.
  • Making some minor changes in the existing sets of Smogdex won't work.
  • Set explanation is a must.
  • Be detailed with your sets & replies as much as you can. You may (please) include Replies, teammates options, threats, usage tips, & even a team built around the set.
  • You are free to discuss others' sets in the Submission time, but can't discuss set after the voting begins.
  • You are allowed to suggest potential changes in others' sets, if it doesn't bother him/her.
  • You are allowed to reserve your set in this forum (not suggested though), but the reservation won't last more than 24 hours. If so, your reservation will be denied & others will get the chance to copy your set (so don't lose the opportunity).
  • Please name your sets based on the moves & items, & not random funny names.
  • You aren't allowed to copy anyone else's set, not even the reserved ones.
  • It is illegal to post illegal sets. If found doing such illegal stuff, you'll be declared illegal from this very Legal forum.
  • You are allowed to change your set before the Voting begins (though this may create confusions & isn't recommended).
  • You can't vote for your own set.
  • Creating new accounts to vote, manipulating others to vote your sets & other such tricks are strictly forbidden. If found, you'll be banned from posting here.
  • Try to avoid double-posting.
  • If you have any queries regarding this post, prefer asking me personally through Conversations or Profile Posts. Avoid asking questions on this forum.
  • Adhere the Forum Rules & be polite with other members here.
  • At last, the most important rule. Just Have Fun :quagchamppogsire:

Week 1: Tornadus-Therian

:Sv/tornadus-therian:

Tornadus-Therian is one of the best wallbreaker, sweeper & pivot all at once. Paired with its decent bulk and Regenerator, this mon is able to fit into almost all team archetypes. Let's see if you can take this versatile to the next level!!

Mixed Scarf Tornadus-T (cleaner set)

Tornadus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Tera Type: Electric
Naive Nature
- Bleakwind Storm
- Heat Wave
- U-turn
- Knock Off

General idea and moveset choices
This generation is important because Knock Off is less available, so making item control during a battle is more difficult.
This set is item-reliant, and allows Tornadus-T to make good use of its mixed offenses to their full extent.
Bleakwind Storm is picked over Hurricane due to its better accuracy, despite being still lower than the ideal one, and it is not affected by Sun. Also, the secondary effect is more valuable, being Spe control over confusion.
Heat Wave is picker over Focus Blast due to its better accuracy and the possibility to use Sun support on our side of the field.
U-turn is here to keep the momentum and is good for scouting, whereas Knock Off is for both coverage and utility.
Tera Electric allows you to stay in on a predicted paralysis.

EVs spread and item
The EVs spread is a huge part of the unpredictability of this set. With Choice Scarf you can bluff a Choice Specs/Band set and you reach 475 Spe points. Keep in mind that with 252 Spe EVs + a Spe-enhancing nature you get 375 points.
With 475 Spe points you outspeed neutral Spe Quaquaval with 120 EVs, at +2.
252 EVs on Atk & SpA (that are very unusual) allows you to mimic an Expert Belt before the opponent can realize the truth.
Calcs:
252 Atk Tornadus-Therian U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Iron Leaves: 284-336 (88.4 - 104.6%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Munkidori: 248-294 (78.2 - 92.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

With a Naive nature, which makes SpD almost equal to its Def, you are free to fully invest into both the offenses (base 100/110), but take in account that Tornadus-T rarely has the sheer power to OHKO things from full

Teammates support
It is better if you use this Tornadus as a cleaner towards weakened threats, so you can punish your opponent's threats before being scouted.
Also, hazards control is really appreciated because SR deals a lot of damage pre Tera.
Sun &/or Rain support is always appreciated to have a more reliable STAB or more power behind Heat Wave in the Sun.
In return, this Tornadus-T offers mid-to-late game support and a fast U-turn on a body with Regenerator.

Sludge Bomb + Taunt Tornadus-Therian (Stally Set) :Tornadus-Therian:
Borb (Tornadus-Therian) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Bleakwind Storm
- Sludge Bomb
- Knock Off/U-turn/Focus Blast
- Taunt

Thought Process + How it works:
Essentially the set abuses torn's natural ability to just live nearly forever, so why not hinder other people's ability to do so? Combining sludge bomb poisons and taunt allows for a very quick wearing down of opposing mons. The choice between knock and u turn is kinda up to the team, knock speeds up the process of wearing down the opponent, u turn gives the option to pivot around to prevent opponents from taking advantage of the iffy coverage the set has, and focus is just nice for covering steels and :arcanine-hisui:. Ev Spread is just kinda the usual, couldnt think of any calcs id need it to specifically eat.

*Special Note: It is VERY important to have this paired with smth that can stomach hits from :arcanine-hisui: if you dont run focus, as this thing will kick your ass easily if you don't

Team with this set (Some weird stall team idk)
:tornadus-Therian: :clodsire: :mandibuzz: :Scream tail: :Chesnaught: :gastrodon:
https://pokepast.es/create
:Tornadus-therian:
The main guy, helps wear stuff down, yknow how it works

:Clodsire:
Its stall, needs an unaware, OU took dirge, this was the best i could think of. Helps vs special sweepers and sets hazards and toxicing.

:mandibuzz:
Kills physical sweepers and can fend off most physical sweepers, removes hazards if needed and also spreads toxic.

:Scream tail:
Iron hands scary, resists fighting and has encore, overall just kinda does that while using wishtect to rack up poison damage.

:Chesnaught:
Additional knock support, physical wall, speeds up the wearing down process with leech seed and helps vs rain w the water resist and physical bulk.

:Gastrodon:
Additional anti rain stuff, fends off :arcanine-hisui: in case it ever gets in, sets more hazards, just a nice guy.

I havent made teams w this torn set other than this one, but i think it could have some fun potential.

Reserving acrobatics torn

A lot of tornadus - T sets can be inconsistent due to its special stab moves having fairly low accuracy, and the inherent predictability of its sets (you know what it's gonna do, knock off, u-turn, and smack something with a flying move when it feels like it). So maybe a set that takes advantage of this may be a good idea...

:Tornadus-Therian: (M) @ No Item
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 220 Atk / 116 SpA / 172 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Acrobatics
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Focus Blast

This set is designed to take advantage of the specially defensive tanks that like to come in on :tornadus-therian: like :clodsire: and :assault vest: :tornadus-therian: and smack them with a 110 bp acrobatics, while also doing standard :tornadus-therian: things. The first 3 moves make the set what it is but the last move slot can be customised. I prefer focus blast to still threaten :iron treads: and non :assault vest: :goodra-hisui:, but brick break can also be useful against screens teams.

The attack investment allows this set to threaten a 2hko against :clodsire: and :assault vest: :tornadus-therian: on the switch (if the clodsire is not :heavy duty boots: a spike can be used to guarantee a kill). The speed investment is to outspeed the base 110 mons :assault vest: :tornadus-therian:. The rest is dumped into special attack to maximise the damage of focus blast.

Acro vs clodsire w/ leftovers
220 Atk Tornadus-Therian Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Clodsire: 220-261 (47.4 - 56.2%) -- 25.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Acro + spike vs clodsire w/ leftovers
220 Atk Tornadus-Therian Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Clodsire: 220-261 (47.4 - 56.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after 1 layer of Spikes and Leftovers recovery

Acro vs boots clodsire
220 Atk Tornadus-Therian Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Clodsire: 220-261 (47.4 - 56.2%) -- 82.4% chance to 2HKO

Acro vs assault vest torn
220 Atk Tornadus-Therian Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 208 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 177-208 (50.4 - 59.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Electrical Prank Set

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Light Ball
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane / Bleakwind Storm
- Fling
- U-turn
- Focus Blast / Knock Off

By using fling, you can forcibly cripple any non-electric type with fling, paralysing otherwise difficult to punish ground types like iron threads and decrease their longevity significantly.

We need atleast 5 sets (need 1 more( before going to the voting state!!! Kindly submit more sets!!

Deadline has been extended by 2 more days!!

I'mma try this out if allowed.

Tailwind Mixed Pivot-Sweeper

Tornadus-Therian @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Naive Nature
- Tailwind
- Bleakwind Storm / Hurricane
- Knock Off / Heat Wave / Focus Blast
- U-turn

Set Details
After Tailwind, a Positive Speed Nature Tornadus-T will outspeed everything available in the tier aside from Swift Swim Barraskewda in the Rain without any investment, even Choice Scarf Meowscarada. This can either be used to allow it to sweep late game with coverage Flying, Dark, and Bug provide (Klefki, Tinkaton, and Dedenne are the only ones available to use in the tier who resist all three), ensure an crucial Knock Off on the switch, or pivot into another teammate with U-Turn to conserve momentum. Heat Wave is an option over Knock Off allows it to hit Steel and Ice types such as Iron Treads, Scizor, and Mamoswine for super-effective damage while losing neutral coverage against H-Arcanine. Focus Blast hits Iron Treads, Mamoswine, and H-Arcanine for neutral damage, but loses neutral coverage against Thundurus-T, which can allow it to set-up on this set.

Heavy-Duty Boots is the preferred item to safely switch-in for setup opportunities while also bluffing Pivot and Nasty Plot sets against pokemon slower than its Spe outside of Tailwind. Life Orb can however provide additional muscle to help break through bulkier opponents with a drawback that can be mitigated through Regenerator. EVs are to max out both Atk and SpAtk for sweeping opportunities, with the 4 in Def to help it survive random priority attacks better. Tera-Electric takes away all of its usual weaknesses (Ice, Rock, and Electric) and gives it an immunity to Thunder Wave, which can cripple the viability of this set.

Team Options
I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert here at team-building, but in general being faster is always nice. Under Tailwind, Breloom outspeeds +1 Max Positive base 109 Spe, allowing it to Spore / Rock Tomb most of the metagame on a switch. It also resists Rock and Electric--two of Tornadus-T's weaknesses. A-Ninetales, similarly, outspeeds everything in the tier with +1 Max Positive Spe and resists Ice, allowing Tornadus-T to pivot into it to allow it to set up Aurora Veil, Encore, or Hypnosis virtually uncontested. Even without Spe investment, A-Ninetales outspeeds everything Base 119 Spe or lower with +1 Max Positive Spe, so a tailored set mixing bulk, SpAtk, and Spe can be viable. Prankster-Thunder Wave / Will-O-Wisp is a bit of a problem here also, so Dark types such as Crawdaunt and Hydreigon are welcome; the former especially benefits from not having to rely on Aqua Jet to catch up to the rest of the meta game.

Tornadus-Therian (M)
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Acrobatics
- U-turn
- Taunt
- Knock Off

I’ve posted this set on this main thread a couple times. No item Acro practically outdamages its special stabs outside of Rain due to accuracy. Physical Torn takes its wear down game to another level. Knock and U turn are stronger due to the investment, this makes for a bigger threat as a pivot than special Torn. The biggest concern with this set is no HDB. While you still gain a net of 8% health back if rocks are down you ideally want to have them off the field to maximize its potential. This set should really be apart of the analysis bc it’s that good

not afraid of missing moves? you might wanna try this:

Tornadus-Therian @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 144 HP / 52 Def / 108 SpA / 24 SpD / 180 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Nasty Plot
- Hurricane
- Focus Blast

an interesting approach on torn to exploit teams relying on bellibot to punish it, set is pretty straightforward with sub blocking status/sorta circunventing some revenge killers and you have a decent amount of opportunities to get some subs via forcing stuff out, enough speed for stuff that speed creeps maushold, tera elec is used for a better mu vs av torn but something like tera dragon could also work in case you dont wanna waste too much evs on spdef to not get its sub broken by bellis muddy water

0 SpA Bellibolt Muddy Water vs. 144 HP / 24 SpD Tera Electric Tornadus-Therian: 71-84 (21.1 - 25%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO
0- Atk Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 144 HP / 52 Def Tornadus-Therian: 71-84 (21.1 - 25%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Meowscarada Flower Trick vs. 144 HP / 52 Def Tera Electric Tornadus-Therian on a critical hit: 259-306 (77.3 - 91.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 160 Atk Iron Leaves Psyblade vs. 144 HP / 60 Def Tornadus-Therian: 274-324 (81.7 - 96.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Quaquaval Aqua Step vs. 144 HP / 60 Def Tornadus-Therian: 276-325 (82.3 - 97%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

PS: it's supposed to be 52 on calcs, i was testing another spreads and ended up copying the wrong calcs but they still achieve what they're meant to

Thanks a lot for all these tremendous sets for our first week!! Also apologies for the delay!!

Hereby, I announce the commencement of voting. You guys probably know the drill! We will be voting in Ranked Pairs. Basically, you'll be ranking the sets in descending order of their viability, creativity & relevance to the metagame (you need to vote for a minimum of 2 candidates & a maximum of 5). An example could be A > B > C > D > E > F or F > E > D > C > B > A.

You may use the alphabets written in front of the sets to vote.
