Status

Personally I think smogon as a website is great, but it is missing one feature that I think would make it much better. It is lacking an ability to show your status. Now I know, this is normally only implemented on instant messaging sites and game lobbies, but this would be a useful feature, as this prevents people from talking to people who are away doing something. If this is impossible to implement/very hard to implement/ I am not aware of the feature just let me know. Opinions?

What would cause people to change their status?
If it is automatic, then what about people reading a long page of a thread?
How is this better than the online/offline green button?

Forums are not designed for such instant communication, nor are "conversational" posts in rapid succession encouraged anyway. It's passive like e-mail.
