Welcome to Lure That Threat! From now on I will be the host with Zen

After counting last round's votes, the winner is ironwater with his Sludge Wave Tornadus, congratulations! Soon I will add you to the hall of fame.

This week's threat is ... Toxapex!

Toxapex @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 19 Spe

- Scald / Toxic Spikes / Light Screen
- Knock Off / Toxic
- Haze / Toxic
- Recover

Toxapex a pokemon that made its appearance in alola and has remained in ou during gen7 and now in gen8 due to its incredible capacity for bulk and being able to resist many super effective movements and threaten us with a scald burn. How would you lure and remove this incredible wall?

You have 5 days to post a Toxapex lure, enjoy posting! :)

Reserving TrapperFini

Trapper Fini
:ss/Tapu Fini:
Tapu Fini @ Leftovers :leftovers:
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 200 Def / 60 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Nature's Madness
- Whirlpool
- Moonblast / Knock Off

Most team's counterplay to Tapu Fini consists of natural resistances and SpD walls, the particular instance of which is Toxapex. Utilizing Taunt, Nature's Madness, and Whirlpool, Tapu Fini baits, traps, and removes Toxapex for offensive partners otherwise concerned about being walled or threatened by status. Misty Surge is a huge plus for this reason, as it prevents both Scald burns and Toxic from Toxapex. It's best to remove items from Toxapex beforehand, as Shed Shell or Eject Button variants can prevent trapping.

Knock Off is an option over Moonblast to remove items from Toxapex (or other walls such as Ferrothorn or Slowking-G), however, Tapu Fini will lack offensive potential outside of being a trapper.

Xufactor3 General rule of thumb, unless it's on the VR it won't be accepted. Dhelmise is not on the VR.
  • Please focus on only posting viable Pokemon as lures. As a general rule of thumb, only nominating Pokemon found in the OU Viability Rankings is a good idea. Nominations can be rejected on the basis of the Pokemon being unviable.

Submitting Block + Spite Toxapex

toxapex.gif

Toxapex @ Rocky Helmet / Black Sludge / Shed Shell
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Knock Off
- Recover
- Block
- Spite
(spread can be adjusted with some Spe Def depending on what you need)

Block + Spite Toxapex is amazing at trapping and deleting other Toxapex mainly because you can be sure that the other Toxapex will come in against you and no one will scout for Block. To be more specific, when you get your Toxapex in you can start spamming Knock Off. Most of the time, when Toxapex is in a team you will use it as a Knock Off absorber and rather than losing precious items, most players will switch-in their own Toxapex to trade a Knock Off. This means two things; first one is that you will be able to freely click Block and trap them as they want to trade back a Knock Off, and second one is that even if they are Shed Shell you will be able to Knock this Off first. Block Spite Toxapex is way too much uncommon for someone to check and risk getting Knocked Off on another Pokemon while not Knocking Off your own Toxapex. Now, once the opposing Toxapex is Blocked, Spite (which is like having a 64 PP move) allows you to win the one vs one (against every set bar something like Light Screen + Knock Off + Haze, but that’s super uncommon and you can still make them use most of their PP), even though your Toxapex will end up super low in PP.

Now there’s one main drawback in using this Toxapex set which is that you will lose most of your utility as a Toxapex. You can still spam Knock Off and use an item like Rocky Helmet to punish some physical attackers or some U-turn users, but not having Scald and Haze and Toxic means that you won’t be able to check some of the Pokemon you like to check as a Toxapex. This set is also rather specific as you can’t trap a lot of Pokemon (your main targets are opposing Toxapex and sometimes Ferrothorn), so it should only be used in a team where you can afford losing this utility and rely on trapping and deleting the opposing Toxapex to win.

For instance, I’ve used this set alongside with Acid Armor Body Press Melmetal who is an amazing wincon, but who can’t don’t anything if there’s a Toxapex in the opposing team, meaning that you rely on deleting the opposing Toxapex first to put any kind of work.

MPL Champion

Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 240 HP / 220 SpA / 48 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Whirlpool
- Psychic
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower

A healthy Toxapex will often stay in vs Slowking to get rid of its Assault Vest in the early game, a perfect opportunity to trap it with Whirlpool and eliminated provided its not a Shed Shell variant. Probably worth sneaking in a Knock with something like Weav first to make sure the lure doesnt go to waste vs Shed Shell. It runs enough speed to outpace 0 Speed Pex. Main drawback of this is having to give up on Future Sight and/or coverage on the standard AV set, which are extremely useful in every other matchup

220+ SpA Slowking-Galar Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 206-246 (67.7 - 80.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
220+ SpA Slowking-Galar Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 158-188 (51.9 - 61.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Provided it's knocked first even specially defensive Pex shouldnt be able to outheal this in time.

:ss/urshifu-rapid-strike:
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Protective Pads
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Whirlpool
- Thunder Punch

- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat

Urshifu-R lures Pex in quite easily since normally it has to U-turn out and take tonnes of Rocky Helmet damage if it clicks Surging Strikes. With Whirlpool and Thunder Punch, it forces Toxapex to click Recover since it will be 2HKOed by Thunder Punch and the trapping damage. Since Toxapex is constantly clicking Recover anyway, it lets Urshifu keep its Protective Pads to block Rocky Helmet damage or a Scald burn.

252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 98-116 (32.2 - 38.1%) -- 95.7% chance to 3HKO

Not-Choiced Tapu Lele

Expert Lele
:SS/tapu Lele:
Tapu Lele @ Expert Belt
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature

IVs: 0 Atk
- Psyshock

- Moonblast
- Thunderbolt

- Focus Blast

Expert Lele aims at bluffing a choice item in order to surprise common switchins and pivots with a supereffective move. Now, Toxapex isn't a switch-in, but people like to pivot it in on predicted Moonblasts, which would effectively force Tapu Lele out since 99% of the time it's either Choice Specs or Choice Scarf. Moonblast's damage output bluffs Scarf (the different Nature is basically undetectable given the low damage roll), so the Toxapex user is conditioned to stay in, especially if you aggressively bluffed Choice Scarf beforehand (for example, against Dragapult or Weavile, two typical Scarf Moonblast victims). On the following turn, you get to crush Toxapex with a supereffective STAB Psyshock that, alongside the previous Moonblast, always kills any Toxapex spread. Of course, Tapu Lele can still maul Toxapex after it has killed something with one of its other coverage moves.
This set also lures many other threats, but when it comes to Toxapex this are the interactions and calcs

252+ SpA Tapu Lele Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 63-74 (20.7 - 24.3%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
or
252+ SpA Tapu Lele Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 53-62 (17.4 - 20.3%) -- possible 5HKO
+
252+ SpA Expert Belt Tapu Lele Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex in Psychic Terrain: 240-283 (78.9 - 93%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As you can see, either Focus Blast or Moonblast puts Toxapex very dangerously close to a guaranteed KO on the subsequent Psyshock already without Stealth Rock. With those up, that's a dead Toxapex.

Volcanion @ Expert Belt
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Steam Eruption
- Flamethrower / Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave

See Lele, but with Steam Eruption into Earth Power over Moonblast into Psyshock. =P

252+ SpA Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 72-86 (23.6 - 28.2%) -- 93.7% chance to 4HKO
252+ SpA Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex in Rain: 109-129 (35.8 - 42.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Expert Belt Volcanion Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 190-226 (62.5 - 74.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

With either rain or rocks up, Pex is probably dropping.

Aegislash @ Spell Tag
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Block
- Metal Sound

- Shadow Ball
- Close Combat

252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. -2 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 223-264 (73.3 - 86.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Toxapex will almost always play knock off against Aegislash, you just have to get it in a one on one position. Block + Metal Sound could catch defensive pokémon like Toxapex off guard, and it's not very detrimental to the set since you almost always click Shadow Ball. Close Combat is still the preferred fourth move over Flash Cannon in my opinion, for the ability to hit things like Hydreigon and Heatran on switch.

Choiceless Blacephalon

:ss/blacephalon:
Blacephalon @ Expert Belt
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
- Fire Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
- Psychic / Expanding Force

By forgoing a Choice item, Blacephalon can hit Toxapex looking to take advantage of it being locked into a move with a super-effective attack. Psychic is generally the more consistent option, KOing Toxapex after Shadow Ball unless you get the lowest possible roll, while Expanding Force is a guaranteed OHKO if Psychic Terrain is up.

252 SpA Expert Belt Blacephalon Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 194-230 (63.8 - 75.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Expert Belt Blacephalon Expanding Force vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 173-204 (56.9 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Expert Belt Blacephalon Expanding Force (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex in Psychic Terrain: 336-396 (110.5 - 130.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

For non-spite Toxapex, Ferrothorn, and some others,

Dhelmise @ Leftovers
Ability: Steelworker
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 1 Spe
- Rapid Spin
- Anchor Shot
- Knock Off
- Rest

Anchor shot traps.

Defensive Ferrothorn knock off does about 20% to itemless Dhelmise. The Ivs are to reduce gyro ball damage while still outspeeding standard ferro.

Even if this set is known, it still has a lot of utility, and it forces Toxapex and Ferrothorn out if they do not want to be trapped.

Replay of Dhelmise trapping Toxapex:

Clefable @ Sticky Barb / Choice Scarf
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Trick
- Stealth Rock / Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled

Not something particularly new or uncommon, but Toxapex has historically been a key target of this set, which capitalises on the two happening to end up in front of each other quite a lot. Sticky Barb is cool because IIRC it will transfer even with Knock Off, meaning you can take advantage of Pex's tendency to act as a Knock absorber and then force transfer Barb onto it while absorbing Knock yourself, or you can do the easier thing (which usually happens on the rare occasions I run this) and just Trick it or the Choice Scarf onto to Pex when it stays in on or switches into you without fearing a potential Black Sludge thanks to Magic Guard.

Just caught this thread before the deadline damn. Anyway for the goated pex lure. It’s funny because I was actually planning on my next post not being about blaziken, but I came up with this around the time I found this thread so here we are. Blaziken is a great lure for pex because in my experience at least far too many people on the ladder autopilot their toxapex into setup sweepers that don’t have a move in their standard sets to ko it immediately, in spite of a potential tech, eager to haze away the boosts and stop a sweep before it starts. The easy choice for a lure seems to be sd lo earthquake, a solid coverage option that provides value outside of hitting toxapex by hitting certain targets without fearing contact chip. However, like I’ve said in the past the thing I dislike the most about lo blaziken outside of ho is it’s tendency to chip itself into priority range or outright ko itself with the combination of lo chip, flare blitz recoil, and contact chip. This set fully removes the former, and partially removes the latter from that combination, making flare blitz recoil and cc drops much easier to deal with, while still maintaining a solid damage output overall.

:ss/blaziken:
Gigachad (Blaziken) @ Soft Sand
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Close Combat
- Earthquake

Soft sand provides the extra damage needed for a very favourable roll to ohko max def pex at +2, guaranteed after rocks. Any other set is ohkoed straight up.

+2 252+ Atk Soft Sand Blaziken Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 290-342 (95.3 - 112.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

The important thing about this set is also it’s maintenance of the ability to 2hko slowbro and fini at +2, an important thing to note since blaziken won’t be ohkoed by their uninvested scald, nor take any recoil from rocky helmet or lo while koing them.

+2 252+ Atk Soft Sand Blaziken Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 192+ Def Tapu Fini: 186-219 (54 - 63.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Tapu Fini Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Blaziken: 222-264 (73.7 - 87.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Soft Sand Blaziken Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 183-216 (46.4 - 54.8%) -- 64.5% chance to 2HKO
(favourable roll, guaranteed with rocks)
0 SpA Slowbro Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Blaziken: 234-276 (77.7 - 91.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Don’t have time to go over much else but this set also koes pult at +2 without lo, which can’t be done by non knock sets. Overall this set is a great, efficient lure for pex while avoiding the trap of a one trick pony. If you reveal non lo pex will be even more eager to come in, which is another benefactor of this set. I’m on mobile so idk how this is gonna format, but hope you guys like the set!
