I am speaking as a player who takes an active interest in SPL, not a TD here. Also, TDs in SPL have no say over SPL decisions, so please do not take my word as anything more than a single individual's suggestion.
I believe the Tyrants and Cryonicles should get full refunds.
We can all argue about specific past precedents, but I do not think we have the same circumstances surrounding the situations to make anything fully comparable. Precedent may decide some situations, but we also have to be cognizant of when we apply it, how we apply it, and when it is time to start anew. Ultimately, we have an evolving community with evolving perceptions, new personnel, and novel arguments being presented.
I feel that a full refund is the most fair solution for a pre-tournament ban or quit that is entirely outside of team control, which describes these two cases. It is not a perfect match because finding one without the initial player is impossible, but it is the only logical equivalency possible.
I also feel that people (some on the Tyrants and Cryonicles, but some not) have been behaving in an unacceptable fashion about this situation. We have a limited pool of TDs who can provide input on the situation, many of whom are not SPL regulars, and even fewer hosts. They are all doing their best to make this the most competitive tournament while also juggling the holidays and plenty more. I have so much respect and appreciation for all of them -- it is one of the hardest jobs on the site and I have done a lot of these jobs, so I would know. Everyone is entitled to argue for their own team and state how they feel, but nobody is entitled to berate others or show disrespect to people doing a thankless job. Shame on those who have done this.
