Draft Skarmory

Status
Not open for further replies.
**Draft Order:** Round 5 onwards

**Price Range**: 11-12 points

**Overview**: Skarmory excels at being a safe switch-in for most physical threats while applying pressure of its own with Stealth Rock, Spikes, and setup. Its excellent defensive profile often forces opponents to bring specific Pokemon or coverage moves to a match. Skarmory can also discourage opposing setup with Whirlwind, and it can serve as a defensive setup sweeper itself with IronPress. These attributes make it a solid, cost-effective option for an entry hazard-stacking wall.

[Strategy Comments]
Common Roles
========
**Defensive Tank**: Skarmory's main function is to switch in and take hits for its teammates while keeping itself healthy with Roost. If it switches in on a physical threat without super effective attacks, Skarmory can threaten to set up with Iron Defense, then dole out big damage with Body Press. While forcing opponents' physical threats out, Skarmory can make progress by setting entry hazards. Balanced teams can pivot around Skarmory as necessary to gain an advantageous position from which offensive Pokemon can launch devastating attacks. Meanwhile, Skarmory can use Whirlwind to minimize momentum lost from opposing pivots. Skarmory can also push through opposing Pokemon with IronPress.

**Entry Hazard Lead**: Skarmory is a strong choice for a lead thanks to Sturdy. When leading, Skarmory is usually guaranteed one use of Stealth Rock or Spikes, or it can use an early Whirlwind to phaze an opposing lead or first-turn switch. Using Skarmory as an entry hazard lead provides the most value in matchups where it isn't as useful as a wall.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Brave Bird, Iron Head

**Setup Moves**: Iron Defense, Curse

**Utility Moves**: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Roost, Whirlwind

**Coverage**: Body Press

Niche Moves
========
**Taunt**: Skarmory can use Taunt on slower opposing walls that might otherwise set entry hazards, use Defog, heal themselves, or use other utility moves. Taunt on Skarmory can also stem the efforts of an opposing physical setup sweeper, forcing it to fruitlessly swing into Skarmory or concede momentum.

**Reversal**: Reversal can be a strong coverage option for Skarmory thanks to Sturdy. When left at 1 HP via Sturdy or Endure, Reversal will deal significant damage. Paired with Custap Berry, this set can catch foes off guard in a pinch.

**Swords Dance**: Skarmory can safely activate Weak Armor thanks to its high Defense, which can allow it to sometimes act as a cleaner. Setting up a Swords Dance can empower Skarmory to deal significant damage with its STAB moves and coverage options despite its subpar base Attack. Coverage options like Drill Run and Rock Slide can snuff out opposing Fire-types and dissipate opposing Electric-types, each of which usually cause problems for Skarmory.

Common Items
========
**Rocky Helmet**: Skarmory's role as a physical wall and its immunity to most entry hazards allow it to make the most of Rocky Helmet. Foes will be punished for pivoting with moves like U-turn or Flip Turn, which often cause more damage to the user than to Skarmory. Rocky Helmet also allows Skarmory to better intercept certain priority moves like Bullet Punch or Aqua Jet. Opponents will be forced to give heavier consideration to attacking while Skarmory has this item.

**Leftovers**: Skarmory can use Leftovers to lengthen its stay on the battlefield.

Niche Items
========
**Resistance Berries**: Skarmory can struggle against attackers with strong super effective attacks like Ceruledge and Iron Hands. A resistance Berry can provide an extra turn of survival where it can phaze with Whirlwind or attempt to KO in retaliation.

**Custap Berry**: Thanks to Sturdy and Endure, Skarmory can take full advantage of Custap Berry to use an additional attack before fainting.

**Mental Herb**: Taunt will immediately shut down most of Skarmory's capabilities, so having a Mental Herb for security will allow Skarmory to perform its duties with less fear of disruption.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots can be used to preserve Sturdy, helping Skarmory more reliably check setup sweepers. It also reduces Stealth Rock damage if heavy pivoting is planned.

**Shed Shell**: If an opponent has Pokemon with trapping abilities like Magnezone and Gothitelle, Shed Shell can protect Skarmory from being eliminated by them.

Tera
========
Skarmory is not a typical candidate for a roster's Tera Captain, as Terastallization is usually more advantageous on other Pokemon. However, if Skarmory is chosen as a Tera Captain, Tera Fighting can empower Body Press, while Tera Dragon perfectly covers Skarmory's weaknesses to Electric and Fire, allowing it to survive otherwise lethal blows. Tera Ghost can be used to prevent foes from using Rapid Spin to remove its entry hazards. Other Tera types can be chosen to help it wall specific threats.

Draft Strategy
========
Skarmory fits well on balance teams. It is usually a smart choice when an offensive core is already secured and the roster's defenses need bolstering. In these cases, Skarmory should complement the attackers by defensively checking their counters and providing support through entry hazards and utility. Skarmory can fit into a main defensive core, using its massive Defense, Whirlwind, and its longevity to become a major nuisance with the proper support of other defensive teammates.

**Offensive Partners**: Skarmory will happily absorb hits for speedy attackers that are beaten by priority moves, like Iron Bundle, Darkrai, and Roaring Moon. Pokemon like Latios, Chi-Yu, and Serperior that have a weakness to common pivot moves like U-turn and Flip Turn also appreciate Skarmory's ability to disrupt opposing pivot-based offense. Any other attacker that has a weakness to a type that Skarmory resists will also synergize well with it—for example, Skarmory can switch into faster Dragon-types that might threaten Kyurem or strong Ground-types that would otherwise bury Iron Moth.

**Dragon-types**: Skarmory also benefits from offensive teammates that can stand to take a Fire- or Electric-type move. This makes a high-tier Dragon-type Pokemon the perfect partner for Skarmory. Teammates like Latias, Garchomp, and Raging Bolt will capitalize on Skarmory's strengths and cover its weaknesses.

**Defensive Partners**: Skarmory appreciates anything that can switch into special attacks. Teammates such as Ting-Lu and Galarian Slowking have the specially defensive capabilities to intercept hits to which Skarmory is vulnerable.

Checks and Counters
========
**Fire-types**: Most Fire-types can comfortably set up, pivot, or apply offensive pressure against Skarmory, while it cannot significantly damage them in return. For example, Chi-Yu can use Nasty Plot and Gouging Fire can set up Dragon Dance.

**Electric-types**: Thanks to their resistance to Brave Bird and their ability to hit Skarmory super effectively, most Electric-type threats can do as they please around Skarmory. Raging Bolt is a common threat that can begin stacking uses of Calm Mind, and pivots like Zapdos and Rotom-W can take full advantage of Volt Switch.

**Ghost-types**: Because Body Press is Skarmory's strongest offensive option, Ghost-types can usually switch in for free against Skarmory. Subsequently, a threat like Gholdengo may choose to use Nasty Plot to break through the rest of the team's defenses.

**Strong Special Attackers**: Anything with high Special Attack or boosting moves can put significant pressure on Skarmory, as its Special Defense is quite disappointing. Popular Pokemon like Darkrai and Iron Bundle can successfully force Skarmory out with strong neutral moves.

**Taunt**: Taunt renders Skarmory unable to spread entry hazards, keep healthy with Roost, or set up with Iron Defense.

**Draft order:** Skarmory can be drafted as a core defensive unit or as a complementary hazard-stacking utility slinger. It’s usually picked up about the fourth round in the first case, or on/after the sixth round in the second case. Round 5 onwards this is the format we've used for all other analyses

**Price range**: 12-13 11-12 Points

**Overview**:
Skarmory excels at being a safe switch for virtually any physical threat while applying pressure of its own with hazards and setup. Its excellent defensive typing makes it difficult for opponents to handle in preparation, often forcing opponents to bring specific Pokemon or coverage moves to a match. Skarmory can provide great utility to a roster with Stealth Rocks, Spikes, and other niche options "niche" doesn't make sense to mention here, what exactly are you referring to here if you think its worth mentioning?, and it can serve as a defensive win condition of its own with a combination of Iron Defense and Body Press. Skarmory has powerful sustain, phasing, and get-out-of-jail-free options, making it the ultimate nuisance to enemy teams. skarmory is 12 points at best, it's nowhere near the "ultimate" of anything. use different phrasing to reflect the strengths of its defensive profile. It should be noted that Skarmory is distinct from Corviknight in its defensive staying power, ability to stack hazards, and gusting capabilities. Skarmory is also simply more awesome than Corviknight, though they both deserve love and appreciation (on separate rosters). pointless fluff

**Common Roles**
========
**Defensive Tank**: Skarmory’s main function is to switch in and take hits for its teammates. If it switches in on a physical threat without fire- or electric-type coverage, Skarmory can threaten to set up with Iron Defense, then dole out big damage with Body Press. While forcing opponents’ physical threats out, Skarmory can be an obnoxious obstacle by setting hazards or staying healthy with Roost. Pivot around Skarmory as necessary to gain an advantageous position from which your offensive Pokemon can launch devastating attacks, or use Skarmory itself to set up and push through with Body Press.

**Hazards, Phasing, Utility**: When Iron Defense or Body Press aren’t favored, Skarmory can also function as a more team-focused Pokemon by providing value through its library of utility moves. Skarmory can easily stack hazards with access to both Stealth Rock and Spikes. Whirlwind is a powerful tool for Skarmory, as its high bulk allows it to effectively phase setup sweepers. ; since it has high bulk and few weaknesses, Skarmory can sometimes get off multiple consecutive uses of Whirlwind before being forced out. Pivoting to the most favorable teammate after a Whirlwind can be a critical turn of momentum in Draft format.

**Common Moves**
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Brave Bird, Iron Head

**Setup moves**: Iron Defense, Curse

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Roost, Whirlwind

**Coverage**: Body Press

**Niche Moves**
========

**Taunt**: Skarmory can Taunt slower opposing walls that might otherwise hurl utility or use Taunt themselves. Taunt on Skarmory can also stem the efforts of an opposing physical setup sweeper, forcing them to fruitlessly swing into Skarmory or concede momentum.

**Rock Tomb**: For the cases when an opposing threat is weak to Rock-type moves, Rock Tomb is a solid option to chip away its HP and pressure it to switch out, lest it become a uselessly slow target for Skarmory’s teammates. irrelevant imo

**Reversal**: While not recommended, Reversal can be a strong surprise coverage option for Skarmory thanks to its ability Sturdy. When paired with a successful use of Sturdy (or Endure, which Skarmory also could use) left at 1 HP via Sturdy or Endure, Reversal will deal significant damage. Paired with a hypothetical Tera Fighting and Custap Berry, this set can catch opponents off guard in a pinch.

**Tailwind**: Tailwind can empower Skarmory’s teammates to secure otherwise difficult or impossible KOs. Tailwind’s ephemeral effect, coupled with Skarmory’s diverse and powerful pool of other utility moves, makes it an option that is only optimal in a few particular cases.

add Swords Dance, note that Skarmory has additional coverage in Drill Run, Rock Slide, etc and access to Weak Armor can allow it to sometimes work as a cleaner

**Common Items**
========
**Rocky Helmet**: With its massive Defense stat, Skarmory takes full advantage of Rocky Helmet. Enemies will be punished for pivoting with moves like U-turn or Flip Turn, which often cause more damage to the user than to Skarmory. Rocky Helmet also allows Skarmory to better intercept certain priority moves like Bullet Punch or Aqua Jet. Opponents will be forced to give heavier consideration to attacking Skarmory with this item.

**Leftovers**: Leftovers is a standard item for any bulky Pokemon, and Skarmory can use it to lengthen its stay on the battlefield while enemies scramble to find an answer. Leftovers pair nicely with Roost, which can work in tandem to give Skarmory multiple uses of its ability, Sturdy.

**Occa Berry/Wacan Berry Resist Berries**: In Draft format, these damage mitigation berries are worth considering to limit an opponent’s options of removing Skarmory. Depending on the roster matchup, either Occa Berry or Wacan Berry can be used to give Skarmory a surprise second wind, allowing for setup, gusting, sustaining, and scouting. move to niche

**Niche Items**
========
**Custap Berry**: With access to both Sturdy and Endure, Skarmory can take full advantage of Custap Berry to get off a use of Roost, Body Press, or some other surprise utility or attacking option. use an additional attack before fainting.

**Mental Herb**: Taunt will immediately shut down most of Skarmory’s capabilities, so having a Mental Herb for security will allow Skarmory to perform its duties unencumbered while gusting away or swinging into the Taunt user.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: For the cases when Sturdy is perceived to be a necessity, or for the cases when Skarmory is on a pivot-heavy team, Heavy-Duty Boots can eliminate chip damage from Stealth Rocks. Note, hHowever, that Skarmory’s Flying type makes it immune immunity to the effects of Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web makes Heavy-Duty Boots less necessary.

**Shed Shell**: If an opponent has Magnezone, then Shed Shell can be a way to outplay the Magnet Pull trap.

**Tera**
========
Skarmory is not a typical candidate for a roster’s Tera captain, as Terastalizing is usually more advantageous on other Pokemon due to Skarmory's fantastic base typing. However, Skarmory has two strong options for Terastalizing that are each effective in different ways. if Skarmory is used as a Tera Captain, Tera Fighting can empower Body Press, sometimes leading to a surprise KO. while Tera Dragon perfectly covers Skarmory’s weaknesses to Electric and Fire, allowing it to survive otherwise lethal blows.

**Draft Strategy**
========
Skarmory fits well on balance teams. Skarmory will usually be a smart choice when an offensive core is already secured, and the roster's defenses need bolstering. In these cases, Skarmory should complement the attackers by being a defensive check to their threats defensively checking their counters and providing support through hazards and utility. For more defensive or stall teams, lol at using stall in gen 9 draft Skarmory can fit into a main defensive core, using its massive Defense stat, gusting capabilities Whirlwind, and sustaining power longevity to become a major nuisance with the proper support of other defensive teammates.

**Offensive Partners**: Skarmory will happily absorb hits for speedy attackers that are beat by priority moves, like Iron Bundle, Darkrai, and Roaring Moon. Teammates Pokemon like Latios, Chi-Yu, or Serperior that have a weakness to common pivot moves like U-turn and Flip Turn also appreciate Skarmory’s ability to switch in safely disrupt opposing pivot-based offense - these teammates could often include Latios, Chi-Yu, or Serperior. Any other attacker that has a weakness to a type that Skarmory resists will also synergize well - for example, Skarmory can switch into faster Dragon-types that might threaten Kyurem, or strong Ground-types that would otherwise bury Iron Moth.

**A Big, Bad Dragon Dragon-types**: Aside from being the safety option for glass cannon attackers, Skarmory also benefits from offensive teammates who can stand to take a Fire- or Electric-Type move. This makes a high-tier Dragon-Type Pokemon the perfect partner for Skarmory. Teammates like Latias, Garchomp, or Raging Bolt will capitalize on Skarmory’s strengths and cover its weaknesses.

**Defensive Partners**: Skarmory appreciates anything that can switch into special attacks. The most classic partner is Blissey, which has synergized with Skarmory on classic stall teams for decades. Toxapex is another noteworthy classic partner of Skarmory, as the two can cover each other’s weaknesses fairly well and provide redundancy in spreading hazards. Blissey and Toxapex are nowhere near good enough in draft to be go-to examples here. More modern teammates are typically found in Teammates such as Ting-Lu and Galarian Slowking, each of whom have the specially defensive capabilities to intercept Skarmory-lethal hits hits Skarmory is vulnerable to. Pokemon with Unaware like Clefable or Clodsire can each cover Skarmory in the case of an opposing setup sweeper. too niche imo, and whirlwind is solid enough counterplay to setup

**Checks and Counters**
========
**Fire-Types**: Popular fire types can comfortably set up, pivot, or apply offensive pressure while Skarmory cannot significantly damage them in return. remains virtually helpless, save for a hard read. provide a couple of examples for each of these bullet points naming archetypes of pokemon

**Electric-Types**: As with Fire-Types Thanks to their resistance to Brave Bird and ability to hit Skarmory super effectively, most Electric-Type threats can do as they please around Skarmory. In the rare case that Skarmory outspeeds the Electric foe, it can stall for a few turns with Roost, but due to Skarmory’s lackluster Special Defense and the frequency of Electric Pokemon being Special attackers, this solution is akin to putting a band-aid on a lightning strike.

**Ghost-Types**: Because Body Press is Skarmory’s strongest offensive option, Ghost-Types can usually switch in for free against Skarmory. Skarmory can anticipate a Ghost-Type foe with Brave Bird or Whirlwind.

**Strong Special Attackers**: Anything with a high Special Attack stat or boosting moves can put significant pressure on Skarmory, as its Special Defense is quite disappointing. Be aware of this vulnerability during team planning, and compensate with smart switches and specially bulky outs.

**Taunt**: Taunt renders Skarmory unable to spread hazards, keep healthy with Roost, or set up with Iron Defense.

Not QC checking this yet, this needs a lot of work still and I'd like to see the changes implemented before checking it off.

Changes implemented, ready for next round of checks.

It was strange being told not to mention Blissey on a Skarmory page, but I guess that's just me being a bit old-school. Otherwise, thanks for the guidance!

EDIT: Abriel gave QC 1 check over discord. Ready for QC 2.

Let me know once you've implemented; I'd like to see these changes before giving the 2/2

[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 5 onwards

**Utility**: Skarmory can also function as a more team-focused Pokemon by providing value through its library of utility moves. Skarmory can easily stack hazards with access to both Stealth Rock and Spikes. Whirlwind is a powerful tool for Skarmory, as its high bulk allows it to effectively phase setup sweepers. (I don't see what sets this apart from the defensive tank role. I'd include an Entry Hazard Lead role instead)

Changes implemented, save for:

-You told me to change "cost-effective" to "cost-affective" - that is incorrect
-Your suggested wording "avoid being set up on" ends a clause with a preposition, so I changed the wording to be correct but still match your idea

Changes that I have questions about:

-You struck Drill Run, Rock Slide, and X-Scissor from Coverage, and added Payback. I was told in QC1 to add Drill Run and Rock Slide to Coverage - why the contradiction?
-I'd like to discuss the Commmon Roles section: You said the Utilty role doesn't vary from the Defensive Tank role and suggested to replace Utility with Entry Hazard Lead. In my mind, Defensive Tank usually features four of Stealth Rock/Spikes/Roost/Body Press/Iron Defense, and Utility can include Whirlwind or niche moves while not carrying an attacking option at all. I think Defensive Tank and Entry Hazard Lead are more similar than Defensive Tank and Utility - please let me know your thoughts here.

One last comment was that several of these suggestions seemed to be changes to style without changes to content. Suggested edits to Mental Herb, Custap Berry, and Rocky Helmet are a few examples; the Checks and Counters section saw similar treatment with the words "Most" and "Popular" being exchanged. I've made the changes to your liking, but I don't see why QC1 focused more on syntax and content while QC2 changed wording without changing correctness.

With this said, I appreciate the time you invested in reviewing this, and I share the sentiment in your edits being named "Better Corviknight."

  • My change to "cost-effective" was just adding a hyphen. Apologies if this is your first time contributing- the (ah) means "add hyphen." You'll see more like this in the grammar check. Sometimes QC checks will include GP changes to make their job easier. This relates to your last comment as well; I've made some changes to help the analysis fit the style we're going for and improve clarity
  • Rewording "avoid being set up on" is fine
  • Abriel asked you to mention moves like Drill Run and Rock Slide in the Swords Dance section, and I agree. You can get rid of Payback and just leave Body Press in the common coverage section
  • Defensive Tank and Utility both sounded like they result in a similar pokemon- I don't think adding Whirlwind makes it not a tank. Rewording the role names could work too (see Ting-Lu), but there's just so little variation in movesets and EV spreads that I think they should be listed as one role. I also think the playstyle of Entry Hazard Lead is pretty different from the others; I was thinking a set that makes use of Sturdy to get hazards up early in matchups where it won't be useful as a wall

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the coverage stuff to have Drill Run and Rock Slide in the Swords Dance section. I see your point with the roles, thanks for clarifying. Let me know if the current roles writeup works for you. I think everything else is adjusted according to your original comments

Looks good; just follow this guide for implementing the changes here. There are a few things that didn't get transferred over from my previous review, and that process should make your life easier. After that, you should be ready to ping the GP Team.

[overview]
**Draft order**: Round 5 onwards

**Price range**: 11-12 Points

**Overview**: Skarmory excels at being a safe switch for most physical threats while applying pressure of its own with Stealth Rock, Spikes, and setup. Its excellent defensive typing profile often forces opponents to bring specific Pokemon or coverage moves to a match. Skarmory can also discourage opposing setup with Whirlwind, and it can serve as a defensive win condition of its own with a combination of Iron Defense and Body Press. These attributes make it a solid, cost-effective option for a defensive hazard-stacking wall.

**Common Roles**
========
**Defensive Tank**: Skarmory’s main function is to switch in and take hits for its teammates while keeping itself healthy with Roost. If it switches in on a physical threat without super effective attacks, Skarmory can threaten to set up with Iron Defense, then dole out big damage with Body Press. While forcing opponents’ physical threats out, Skarmory can make progress by setting entry hazards. Balanced teams can pivot around Skarmory as necessary to gain an advantageous position from which offensive Pokemon can launch devastating attacks. Meanwhile, Skarmory can use Whirlwind to minimize momentum lost from opposing pivots. Skarmory can also push through opposing Pokemon with Iron Defense and Body Press.

**Entry Hazard Lead**: Skarmory is a strong choice for a lead, thanks to its ability, Sturdy. When leading, Skarmory is usually guaranteed one use of Stealth Rock or Spikes, or it can use an early Whirlwind to phase out an opposing lead or first-turn switch. Using Skarmory as an entry hazard lead will provide the most value in matchups where it won't be as useful as a wall.

**Common Moves**
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Brave Bird, Iron Head

**Setup moves**: Iron Defense, Curse

**Utility moves**: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Roost, Whirlwind

**Coverage**: Body Press

**Niche Moves**
========

**Taunt**: Skarmory can Taunt slower opposing walls that might otherwise set entry hazards, use Defog, heal themselves, or use other utility moves. Taunt on Skarmory can also stem the efforts of an opposing physical setup sweeper, forcing them to fruitlessly swing into Skarmory or concede momentum.

**Reversal**: Reversal can be a strong coverage option for Skarmory thanks to its ability Sturdy. When left at 1 HP via Sturdy or Endure, Reversal will deal significant damage. Paired with Custap Berry, this set can catch opponents off guard in a pinch.

Coverage options like Drill Run and Rock Slide can snuff out opposing Fire-Types and dissipate enemy Electric-Types, each of which usually cause problems for Skarmory.

**Common Items**
========

**Leftovers**: Skarmory can use Leftovers to lengthen its stay on the battlefield while enemies scramble to find an answer.

**Niche Items**
========

**Mental Herb**: Taunt will immediately shut down most of Skarmory’s capabilities, so having a Mental Herb for security will allow Skarmory to perform its duties with less fear of disruption.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots can be used to preserve Sturdy, helping Skarmory more reliably check setup sweepers. It also reduces Stealth Rock damage if heavy pivoting is planned.

**Shed Shell**: If an opponent has Pokemon with trapping abilities like Magnezone or Gothitelle, Shed Shell can protect Skarmory from being eliminated by them.

**Tera**
========
Skarmory is not a typical candidate for a roster’s Tera captain, as Terastallization is usually more advantageous on other Pokemon. However, if Skarmory is chosen as a Tera Captain, Tera Fighting can empower Body Press, while Tera Dragon perfectly covers Skarmory’s weaknesses to Electric and Fire, allowing it to survive otherwise lethal blows. Tera Ghost can be used to prevent opponents from using Rapid Spin to remove its entry hazards. Other types can be chosen to help it wall specific threats.

**Draft Strategy**
========
Skarmory fits well on balance teams. Skarmory will usually be a smart choice when an offensive core is already secured, and the roster's defenses need bolstering. In these cases, Skarmory should complement the attackers by defensively checking their counters and providing support through hazards and utility. Skarmory can fit into a main defensive core, using its massive Defense stat, Whirlwind, and longevity to become a major nuisance with the proper support of other defensive teammates.

**Offensive Partners**: Skarmory will happily absorb hits for speedy attackers that are beaten by priority moves, like Iron Bundle, Darkrai, and Roaring Moon. Pokemon like Latios, Chi-Yu, or Serperior that have a weakness to common pivot moves like U-turn and Flip turn also appreciate Skarmory’s ability to disrupt opposing pivot-based offense. Any other attacker that has a weakness to a type that Skarmory resists will also synergize well - for example, Skarmory can switch into faster Dragon-types that might threaten Kyurem, or strong Ground-types that would otherwise bury Iron Moth.

**Dragon-types**: Skarmory also benefits from offensive teammates who can stand to take a Fire- or Electric-Type move.

Teammates such as Ting-Lu and Galarian Slowking have the specially defensive capabilities to intercept hits to which Skarmory is vulnerable.

**Checks and Counters**
========
**Fire-Types**: Most fire types can comfortably set up, pivot, or apply offensive pressure while Skarmory cannot significantly damage them in return. For example, Chi-Yu can use Nasty Plot, Gouging Fire can set up Dragon Dance.

**Electric-Types**: Thanks to their resistance to Brave Bird and their ability to hit Skarmory super effectively, most Electric-Type threats can do as they please around Skarmory. Raging Bolt is a common threat that can begin stacking uses of Calm Mind, and pivots like Zapdos or Rotom-W can take full advantage of Volt Switch.

**Ghost-Types**: Because Body Press is Skarmory’s strongest offensive option, Ghost-Types can usually switch in for free against Skarmory. Subsequently, a threat like Gholdengo may choose to use Nasty Plot to break through the rest of the team's defenses.

**Strong Special Attackers**: Anything with a high Special Attack stat or boosting moves can put significant pressure on Skarmory, as its Special Defense is quite disappointing. Popular Pokemon like Darkrai or Iron Bundle can successfully force Skarmory out with strong neutral moves.

**Taunt**: Taunt renders Skarmory unable to spread hazards, keep healthy with Roost, or set up with Iron Defense.
