Well in a landslide, it looks like freekhoorn has won this week with his Mega Lopunny-conquering Cofagrigus set. Like I said when I voted, it seems like a really interesting set and I intend to give it a try myself. Congrats!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the next victim we're going to look at something that is relatively new to the top 12, but has been a key Battle Spot Singles threat for a long time. This week we're going to be talking about how to stop Thundurus! Sporting great offensive stats backed by a nice speed tier, and a movepool full of gems, this guy can be hard to stop. What really makes Thundurus annoying is his ability; Prankster, which gives +1 priority to his status moves - the more popular ones include Taunt, Thunder Wave and Swagger. This means that he is able to pull off the dreaded SwagPlay combination, which can allow even the least-skilled of battlers to win due to its reliance on luck. How do you stop this thing from 'haxing' your team to bits?
Faster electrics and grounds are the probably best ways to beat Thundurus as they are immune to Thunder Wave and can probably knock it out. However, one might stand out:
Raikou @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 92 HP / 164 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Substitute
164 SpA Raikou's Thunderbolt vs 0/4 Thundurus: 51%-60%
The best Thundurus can put out is 57% with Life Orb Focus Blast on the Raikou switch in. Raikou can Calm Mind and Thunderbolt for a very high chance of OHKOing back (77%-91%), provided that Thundurus attacks again and suffers from an additional round of Life Orb recoil. If Thundurus tries to get smart and Nasty Plot to avoid this, Raikou can simply use Substitute to stall out for an additional round of Life Orb recoil.
If Thundurus Nasty Plots on the Raikou switch in, Raikou can use Substitute to counter it. It can Substitute 5 times and then beat up Thundurus with Thunderbolt (or Calm Mind -> Sub -> TBolt. Less chance to KO but some flexibility doesn't hurt).
But what if Thundurus doesn't have Life Orb for Raikou to abuse?
If Thundurus Nasty Plots on the switch, it won't be able to 2HKO a Calm Minding Raikou, as the first Focus Blast maxes at 59% and the second maxes at 44% if Raikou Calm Minds for a second time, and with Leftovers thrown in there Focus Blast will not KO. +2 Raikou Thunderbolt can then OHKO Thundurus.
These are all worst case scenarios for Raikou. If Raikou comes into TBolt, HP Ice, or Thunder Wave, it can do whatever it wants to Thundurus.
Zebstrika @ Life Orb
Ability: Lightningrod
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Ice
- Overheat / Substitute
Raikou is a lot better better than this Pokemon which I'm about to bring up. Zebstrika is such a very underrated Pokemon that often times, I myself forget that it even existed. There really isn't much to say about Zebstrika because it has such a shallow offensive movepool that even as both a physical and a special attacker, its Special Attack even overshadows its own superior Attack due to the fact that it has more toys to play around with. Anyway, lets get started. This set is pretty simple and straightforward. Lightningrod gives Zebstrika not only immunity to Thundurus Thunderbolt (even though 6th Gen gives Electric-types immunity paralysis, so Thunder Wave doesn't affect it either), giving it a +1 Special Attack boost allowing for it to hit harder with its STAB moves. I would say this is pretty much utilizing Zebstrika's Lightningrod ability as a switch-in prediction. Life Orb gives all of its attacking moves a boost. Thunderbolt is its main STAB move, which it should be using to defeat Thundurus with because of its high Base Power. Volt Switch can be used to pivot out of certain situations if you don't want to stay in a +2 Nasty Plot boost or you can use it after Thunderbolt on a weakened Thundurus to go into a partner that you have on your team. Zebstrika also comes off with a nice base 116 Speed, allowing it to outspeed Thundurus as well with the exception of its ability Prankster. Hidden Power Ice can hit Thundurus for super effective damage and Overheat can be used to deal a lot of damage; however, its Special Attack will be depreciated from the -2. Substitute can be used in case Thundurus tends to use Zebstrika as setup fodder if it has Focus Blast as it can retaliate after it attacks and KO Thundurus with Thunderbolt next turn after its Substitute is gone. Would be careful with Thundurus Focus Blast because it OHKOes Zebstrika after a boost.
Choice Specs can be used instead of Life Orb for Zebstrika to hit even harder along with coming into a Thunderbolt or Thunder Wave at a +1.
Espeon @ Light Clay
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Light Screen
- Calm Mind
- Morning Sun
- Psychic
My swagger counter espeon.
Espeon is with her ability magic bounce not only able to get rid of prankster-status moves that Thundurus throws at you, but she can also warp the status back. Have fun switching espeon into prankster-swagger and see thundurus cripple himself. With fully special defensive investments and light screen/calm mind/morning sun support it is able to avoid being ko'ed by thundurus, even if thundurus uses nasty plot to boost himself.
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Espeon through Light Screen: 73-86 (42.4 - 50%) -- 1.6% chance to 2HKO
First turn thundurus uses nasty plot and your espeon gets a light screen up. You can see that espeon lives this t-bolt so you can boost yourself up with calm mind, then heal the damage from espeon with morning sun and hit with a boosted psychic!
After two calm minds you have an almost guaranteed ohko with psychic.
+2 4 SpA Espeon Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Thundurus: 153-181 (99.3 - 117.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
H1N1 (Mamoswine) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Thick Fat
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Tomb
- Earthquake
Scarf Mamoswine deals with all variants of Thundurus pretty well, excluding SwagPlay (who can even counter/check that? Own Tempo Numel?). It may not handle heavily invested defensive variants too well, but most of them don't normally run Focus Miss iirc. Use Icicle Crash if you just want to OHKO reliably, and use Icicle Spear if it's behind a sub or you predict a Substitute. Rock Tomb is a great move to support Mamoswine's team members, and it OHKOs Charizard and Talomflame, so it's a handy move to have around. EQ is EQ. Scarf Mamoswine is probably one of the safest checks to Thundurus atm, so I'm just going to nominate it here. Thundurus is always a poke I struggle with on my team, so it's nice to see all the nominations here :]
Calcs:
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mamoswine: 260-307 (141.3 - 166.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Thundurus: 216-254 (116.1 - 136.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 192+ Def Thundurus: 152-182 (81.7 - 97.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Mamoswine Icicle Spear (4 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Thundurus: 176-216 (94.6 - 116.1%) -- approx. 93.8% chance to OHKO
Ok so let's try this. The first Pokemon that came to mind is Lickilicky!
I don't know why.
Lickilicky @ Leftovers
Ability: Oblivious
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Atk Def / 200 SpD
Careful Nature
- Body Slam/Return
- Rock Tomb/Rock Slide
- Knock Off
- Filler
A few calcs...
56 Atk Lickilicky Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 72-85 (46.7 - 55.1%) -- 70.7% chance to 2HKO
56 Atk Lickilicky Body Slam vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 60-72 (38.9 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
56 Atk Lickilicky Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 72-86 (46.7 - 55.8%) -- 73.4% chance to 2HKO
56 Atk Lickilicky Rock Tomb vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 56-68 (36.3 - 44.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 200+ SpD Lickilicky: 75-91 (34.5 - 41.9%) -- 84.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 200+ SpD Lickilicky: 135-161 (62.2 - 74.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 200+ SpD Lickilicky: 35-42 (16.1 - 19.3%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery
Oblivious is a big draw in Licki's favour although with SwagPlay an option you certainly cannot dismiss Own Tempo. While Thundy will of course pose a big threat back, support is viable, SR, Roar, EQ if under Gravity or Smack'd Down
56 Atk Lickilicky Rock Tomb vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 56-68 (36.3 - 44.1%) -- 97.3% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
56 Atk Lickilicky Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 94-112 (61 - 72.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
Playing with the Attack EV's...
252 Atk Lickilicky Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 114-136 (74 - 88.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4+ SpD Lickilicky: 94-110 (43.3 - 50.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
And that's just with the typing advantage. It turns Return and Body Slam into guaranteed 2hko, doing over 50%.
I find it important enough to edit that Rollout is probably the best move to use. I'll need to revisit the calculator as when I looked initially, it wouldn't let me do anything. If Licki can set up, it may only need one boost for a 2HKO.
I swear I'm nice!
Eviolite Numel for best counter :)
Stops Swagger, Twave...... aaaaand does nothing back to it lel.
Trying to think of a counter for this mon is kinda difficult since Swagger is such a pain and you gotta rely on RNG.
How well does it take Foul Play, though? You're not running any Defense investment on it and it's type weak, so I don't imagine that turning out too well :s
You are right about foul play, but according to global link foul play is less than 5% common on thundurus. I should have said it counters swagger, not swagplay.
Nominating Lanturn:
Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
Level: 50
EVs: 60 HP / 236 SpA / 212 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Volt Switch
Will edit this post to have more details later.
Aegislash @ Lum Berry
Ability: Stance Change
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Sneak
- Sacred Sword
- Shadow Claw
- King’s Shield
This seems like fun so I wanna give it a try c:
Nominating Lum Berry Aegislash!
Aegislash is actually a very good status bait so by giving it a Lum Berry will generally turn the tide around against some status abusers.
It can come in on any if its attacks (including Nasty Plot) and beat it with a combination of Shadow Claw + Shadow Sneak.
If Thundurus decides to use Swagger than Aegislash gets a free +2 which Shadow Claw will guarantee OHKO.
Calcs:
0 Atk Life Orb Thundurus Foul Play vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 44-55 (26.3 - 32.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 68-82 (40.7 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 136-161 (81.4 - 96.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Aegislash-Blade Shadow Sneak vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thundurus: 57-67 (37 - 43.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
OK here's my guy.
Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability:
Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch
-
Knock Off
Standard AssVest Conk here. He does a good job tanking Thundy's special hits due to his bulk combined with the Assault Vest, gains power through being paralyzed with Guts, resists Foul Play incase of SwagPlay shenanigans (need to fight through the confusion though), and can OHKO with Ice Punch (guaranteed if paralysed or been Swaggered). Iron Fist can be used if you want the guaranteed OHKO with Ice Punch but don't wanna bank on the damage roll or being status'd, but Guts is overall better since you can use any status to your advantage (and stops Will-O-Wisp from wrecking you)
Defensive:
  • 252 SpA Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 70-84 (33 - 39.6%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO
  • 252 SpA Thundurus Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 32-38 (15 - 17.9%) -- possible 6HKO
  • 252 SpA Thundurus Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 42-50 (19.8 - 23.5%) -- possible 5HKO
  • 252 SpA Thundurus Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 55-66 (25.9 - 31.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
  • 252 SpA Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 62-74 (29.2 - 34.9%) -- 11.6% chance to 3HKO
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 91-109 (42.9 - 51.4%) -- 6.3% chance to 2HKO
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 42-49 (19.8 - 23.1%) -- possible 5HKO
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 55-65 (25.9 - 30.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 71-86 (33.4 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 81-96 (38.2 - 45.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
  • +2 252 SpA Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 139-165 (65.5 - 77.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • +2 252 SpA Thundurus Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 62-74 (29.2 - 34.9%) -- 11.6% chance to 3HKO
  • +2 252 SpA Thundurus Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 83-98 (39.1 - 46.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
  • +2 252 SpA Thundurus Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 109-129 (51.4 - 60.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • +2 252 SpA Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 124-146 (58.4 - 68.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Offensive:
VOTES ARE NOW OPEN!
Here are your options:
I'm voting for Jibaku since his Raikou deals with Thundurus really nicely, as well as being a strong choice in general.
Remember to bold your votes (without tagging since that's annoying) and try to give a nice little reasoning :)
Voting for Jibaku on his Raikou. I really love it when people play around the opponent. Thundurus will easily continue losing HP from Life Orb, while Raikou sets up Calm Mind or start playing mind games with it. Nice one.
I vote for Jibaku, simply because of the reason that Raikou can come in on it relatively easily and take advantage of Thundurus by setting up, which is not what a lot of these nominations can do as safely as Raikou does it.
jibaku
i like raikou and i think it's an excellent pokemon that can wall thundurus, while also having utility in walling / koing other things instead of being a niche select option so it's cool! :)
Welp, Jibaku wins in a landslide! Guess I better go grab my Lugia and visit the Trackless Forest and begin soft-resetting for a Raikou...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We had some great nominations for Thundurus, all of which could take its powerful special attacks and weren't afraid of copping a Thunder Wave (or Taunt) in the process, but none were able to completely stop a Swagger variant. This isn't such a big deal since Swagger Thundurus has relatively low usage when compared to its other sets, but the SwagPlay strategy (and Prankster users in general) are super annoying if you don't have anything to properly deal with them and have to rely on luck going in your favor (Swagger is even banned from Smogon OU for being so crazy annoying). The most prominent user is probably Liepard (due to it also being able to run Assist with Spore Breloom and Ditto in the back), but others include Kefki, the aforementioned Thundurus, Tornadus, Sableye and even Murkrow! That's enough to build a whole team with...

How do you stop the hax from taking over and trolling your team?

Whimsicott @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Taunt
- Substitute
- Protect
- Moonblast

Whimsicott is the fastest prankster using pokemon there is -speed stat of 116- and has taunt, so it can taunt all the swagplay using pokemon before they can use there swaggers/t-waves. It is a grass-fairy pokemon, that means it can switch in to a spore and is hit not very effective by foul play.
Nature and speed ev's are to outspeed max speed invested thundurus. The rest of the ev's are put into hp and special defense so it can survive life orb hidden power ice from thundurus if it predicts the taunt.

252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 40 SpD Whimsicott: 104-125 (62.2 - 74.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Whimsicott can then stall a bit with protect and substitute until life orb damage from thundurus wears it down and whimsicott can finish off with moonblast.

0 SpA Whimsicott Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Thundurus: 52-63 (33.7 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Altough whimsicott can not taunt mega sableye because of magic bounce, it can deal a lot of damage with moonblast. (Guaranteed 2hko to physical defensive mega sableye)

0 SpA Whimsicott Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mega Sableye: 80-96 (50.9 - 61.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster (Mega Evolves into Magic Bounce = immunity to Victim status moves)
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Snarl
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp

Self-explanatory.
Snarl goes behind Substitutes and lowers spatt hence increasing spdefensive durability. Recover Recovers HP. WoW allows it to cripple phys attackers and increase its defensive durability. Calm Mind lets it boost spatt and spdef increasing its offensive output and spdefensive durability. The Bold Nature is for metagame purposes such as making Kanga cry and so this Mon does much more than just counter SwagPlay. Though it doesn't have Taunt, this mon can stall break by virtue of boosting, statusing opposing mons, and healing itself until either a cleric loses heal bell pp or it starts overpowering walls with boosted Snarl. Chansey can still win in a stall war due to no Taunt so be careful.
Also, I'm not a fan of typing stuff up.
