"Rest will make it better." Groggy_Realm vs. Danse Macabre!

On a boring day I signed onto Shoddy Battle and into the Smogon server. I had planned to test out my new UU Stall team on the UU Ladder. In my haste I clicked Find while on the OU Tab. I was met by Danse Macabre, a very respectable battler hoping for an easy win against a UU team. While it was OU vs UU it proved some old tactics are still very useful (Rest-Talking). Kind of nostolgic of GSC, no?

Groggy_Realm's UU Stallers:

Danse Macabre's OU Team:

I omitted all Leftovers healing after the first time it is shown.

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause
Danse Macabre sent out Regice (lvl 100 Regice).
groggy_realm sent out Kangaskhan (lvl 100 Kangaskhan ?).
Kangaskhan used Hammer Arm.
Kangaskhan's attack missed!
Regice used Focus Blast.
It's super effective!
Kangaskhan lost 77% of its health.
Kangaskhan's leftovers restored its health a little!
Kangaskhan restored 6% of its health.

Fighting moves are rare on my team, and Kangaskhan has one. I want Regice out of the way as quickly as possible to let my bulky special attackers dent his team. Of course, Hammer Arm misses and Focus Blast hits for a big dent. If I could find time I'll get Kangaskhan to Rest up.

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Kangaskhan used Hammer Arm.
It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 21% of its health.
Kangaskhan's speed was lowered.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

Starmie is another Pokemon that will give my team huge problems. It's faster than everything on my team, and bulky, too. I expect a Surf as it's the strongest attack the standard Starmie carries, and I get in Mantine for no damage.

groggy_realm switched in Mantine (lvl 100 Mantine ?).
Starmie used Surf.

I expect a Surf as it's the strongest attack the standard Starmie carries, and I get in Mantine for no damage. I have to switch for a fear of Thunderbolt, so I go to Claydol.

Danse Macabre switched in Regice (lvl 100 Regice).
groggy_realm switched in Claydol (lvl 100 Claydol).

Double switch? I should have realized now that his Starmie does not have Thunderbolt. Claydol can't dent Regice, so I decided to support the team.

Claydol used Light Screen.
A barrier was formed!
Regice used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Claydol lost 39% of its health.
Claydol's leftovers restored its health a little!
Claydol restored 6% of its health.

Light Screen can support my team, and help get something in that will scare Regice away.

groggy_realm switched in Drapion (lvl 100 Drapion ?).
Regice used Ice Beam.
Drapion lost 30% of its health.
Drapion's leftovers restored its health a little!
Drapion restored 6% of its health.

Drapion still standing strong at 76%. I should try to set up some Toxic Spikes because I don't have many other ways of dealing with a Starmie.

Danse Macabre switched in Infernape (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
Drapion used Toxic Spikes.
Spikes were scattered everywhere!
Toxic Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!

Infernape doesn't scare me at the moment with Drapion's bulky defence and Light Screen still up. I don't want him tearing up my team so I needed to hit it as soon as possible.

Infernape used Nasty Plot.
Infernape's special attack was sharply raised.
Drapion used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Infernape lost 74% of its health.

Nasty Plot could hurt me, but I still have my Light Screen. Earthquake does a lot of damage to Infernape, too!

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Starmie was poisoned!
Starmie was poisoned by the Toxic Spikes!
Drapion used Earthquake.
Starmie lost 33% of its health..
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 12% of its health.

Starmie comes in and gets hit by an Earthquake. I probably should have used Night Slash because it would have finished off Infernape, aswell.

Danse Macabre switched in Regice (lvl 100 Regice).
Regice was poisoned!
Regice was poisoned by the Toxic Spikes!
Drapion used Night Slash.
Regice lost 18% of its health.
Drapion's light screen wore off!
Regice is hurt by poison!
Regice lost 12% of its health.

Regice comes in and Light Screen wore off. Night Slash did pretty pathetic damage. I decided to get another layer of Toxic Spikes down.

Drapion used Toxic Spikes.
Toxic Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!
Regice used Ice Beam.
Drapion lost 69% of its health..
Regice is hurt by poison!
Regice lost 12% of its health.

I got what needed to be done, done. I had mine as well sacrifice Drapion now. Maybe, if I'm lucky Sniper will kick in.

Drapion used Night Slash.
A critical hit!
Regice lost 50% of its health.
Regice used Ice Beam.
Drapion lost 37% of its health.
groggy_realm's Drapion fainted.
Regice is hurt by poison!
Regice lost 7% of its health.
Danse Macabre's Regice fainted.

And it did! The mighty Regice falls because of poision damage.

5-5

Now I had to pick something to switch in. I expected Starmie, and I wanted it out of the way, so my best bet was Rotom. Looking back
Mantine would have countered Starmie to perfection, but I still was weary of Thunderbolt.

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
groggy_realm switched in Rotom (lvl 100 Rotom).
Starmie was badly poisoned!
Starmie was badly poisoned by the Toxic Spikes!

And Starmie came in. Shadow Ball would do just as much damage as Discharge, so I opted for that...

Danse Macabre switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Blissey was badly poisoned!
Blissey was badly poisoned by the Toxic Spikes!
Rotom used Shadow Ball.
It doesn't affect Blissey...
Blissey is hurt by poison!
Blissey lost 6% of its health.

And the fat nurse came in. I knew now I had to keep Kanghaskhan alive, because he was my only major threat to Blissey.

groggy_realm switched in Steelix (lvl 100 Steelix ?).
Blissey used Toxic.
It doesn't affect Steelix...
Blissey's leftovers restored its health a little!
Blissey restored 6% of its health.
Blissey is hurt by poison!
Blissey lost 12% of its health.

I didn't want Rotom statused, so I switched in Steelix to take the expected Thunder Wave. Thankfully, he takes the Toxic just as well. I wanted Stealth Rocks set up because my team isn't too strong on the sweeper department, and I needed as much damage done as possible.

Danse Macabre switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Steelix used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!

I got the rocks up, which I think will be important. Gliscor could give me problems, and I suspected his own rocks, so I had mine as well Roar him away and let something take some damage.

Gliscor used Stealth Rock.
Steelix used Roar.
Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Starmie was badly poisoned!
Starmie was badly poisoned by the Toxic Spikes!
Pointed stones dug into Starmie.
Starmie lost 12% of its health.
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 6% of its health.

Sadly he does put Stealth Rocks up. Only Mantine is weak to them, but I felt Mantine will still play a role in this battle. Starmie comes in after the
Roar, and I worry for my Steelix's safety expecting a Surf.

groggy_realm switched in Mantine (lvl 100 Mantine ?).
Pointed stones dug into Mantine.
Mantine lost 25% of its health.
Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 50% of its health.
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 12% of its health.
Mantine's leftovers restored its health a little!
Mantine restored 6% of its health.

I thought Mantine would get in for free if Starmie Surfed because of Water Absorb. He recovers and with his Leftovers gets fighting fit once again. I still fear Thunderbolt, so I go to Claydol.

groggy_realm switched in Claydol (lvl 100 Claydol).
Pointed stones dug into Claydol.
Claydol lost 6% of its health.
Starmie used Rapid Spin.
Starmie blew away the spikes!
Claydol lost 3% of its health.
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 18% of its health.

And I lose all my Spikes. I should have switched to Rotom avoiding Rapid Spin and would have survived a Thunderbolt with ease. I planned on letting Claydol faint but I had better get his rocks out of the way.

Starmie used Surf.
It's super effective!
Claydol lost 63% of its health.
Claydol used Rapid Spin.
Claydol blew away the spikes!
Starmie lost 5% of its health.
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 25% of its health.

Surf hurts...A lot. But poison damage is racking up, so I plan on leaving him to die here.

Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 50% of its health.
Claydol used Light Screen.
A barrier was formed!
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 31% of its health.

But he recovered and I got a Light Screen up. Now, Claydol should die, but Starmie will take a huge dent due to poison.

Starmie used Surf.
It's super effective!
Claydol lost 13% of its health.
groggy_realm's Claydol fainted.
Starmie is hurt by poison!
Starmie lost 37% of its health.

5-4 Danse Macabre

Now I thought that I should switch in Kanghaskhan because I want him to get up to full HP.

groggy_realm switched in Kangaskhan (lvl 100 Kangaskhan ?).
Danse Macabre switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Kangaskhan used Return.
Gliscor lost 29% of its health.

I go for the KO on Starmie and am met by Gliscor. I need to Rest now, but I should survive an Earthquake due to the Leftover healing.

Gliscor used Stealth Rock.
Kangaskhan used Rest.
Kangaskhan fell asleep!
Kangaskhan restored 59% of its health.

Stealth Rocks go down again, but I get sleeping and ready to clean up his team.

Gliscor used Taunt.
Kangaskhan fell for the taunt!
Kangaskhan is fast asleep!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
Kangaskhan can't use Sleep Talk after the taunt!

But not yet because I got taunted, and Sleep Talk doesn't work. I'm not really staying in, so I looked to Rotom for some constipated looking-bat killing.

Danse Macabre switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
groggy_realm switched in Rotom (lvl 100 Rotom).
Pointed stones dug into Rotom.
Rotom lost 12% of its health.
Rotom's light screen wore off!

But Rosie O'Donnell's alter-ego comes in just as Rotom does.

groggy_realm switched in Steelix (lvl 100 Steelix ?).
Pointed stones dug into Steelix.
Steelix lost 3% of its health.
Blissey used Wish.
Blissey made a wish!
Steelix's leftovers restored its health a little!
Steelix restored 3% of its health.

I could bring in Kanghaskhan to try to hit it while sleeping, but opt for
Steelix instead. It wishes and I think he'll try to give Infernape another chance to sleep. I can't let that happen so I go for the safe approach by Earthquaking.

Danse Macabre switched in Infernape (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
Steelix used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Infernape lost 26% of its health.
Danse Macabre's Infernape fainted.

4-4

I was right and finish off the Infernape.

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).

I think he'll just recover expecting my switch, but I don't want Starmie at high HP, so I'm best just Earthquaking.

Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 50% of its health.
Steelix used Earthquake.
Starmie lost 48% of its health.

So in the end, he gains 8% due to Leftovers. I expect my Steelix to survive a Surf either way, so I Earthquake again.to be met by Gliscor.

Danse Macabre switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Steelix used Earthquake.
It doesn't affect Gliscor...

To be met by Gliscor. I knew he would Earthquake, so in comes Rotom.

groggy_realm switched in Rotom (lvl 100 Rotom).
Pointed stones dug into Rotom.
Rotom lost 12% of its health.
Rotom makes ground moves miss with Levitate!
Gliscor used Earthquake.
Gliscor's attack missed!

I decided to status whatever is about to come in, because I don't have any more Toxic Spikes.

Rotom used Will-o-wisp.
Gliscor was burned!
Gliscor used Taunt.
Rotom fell for the taunt!
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.

But Gliscor stays in. Taunt doesn't bother Rotom too much, and I was getting sick of Gliscor anyways, so I Shadow Balled.

Danse Macabre switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Rotom used Shadow Ball.
It doesn't affect Blissey...

To be met by the inevitable. Steelix is coming in!

groggy_realm switched in Steelix (lvl 100 Steelix ?).
Pointed stones dug into Steelix.
Steelix lost 3% of its health.
Blissey used Flamethrower.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Steelix lost 91% of its health.

You see, if I played the OU tier more often, I might have known this is a common set. I don't, and didn't expect a Flamethrower. It hurt, especially with the critical. Well Steelix is useless now, so I'm going to let
Kanghaskhan in for free.

Blissey used Flamethrower.
It's super effective!
Steelix lost 12% of its health.
groggy_realm's Steelix fainted.

4-3 Danse Macabre

All comes to plan. Here comes Kanghaskhan.

groggy_realm switched in Kangaskhan (lvl 100 Kangaskhan ?).
Pointed stones dug into Kangaskhan.
Kangaskhan lost 12% of its health.
Kangaskhan is fast asleep!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
Kangaskhan used Rest.
But it failed!
Blissey used Wish.
Blissey made a wish!

Hammer Arm or Return would both have worked, but 1/3 chance bites me in the @$$. He Wished and I knew Starmie was coming in. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll hit the incoming Starmie and KO it.

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Kangaskhan woke up!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
But it failed!
The wish came true!
Starmie restored 50% of its health.

And luck was going against me at the moment. Waking up is a blessing and a curse. I didn't hit the Starmie, and he is healed, but I know he can't kill me and Return will do big damage.

Danse Macabre switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Kangaskhan used Return.
Gliscor lost 27% of its health.
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.

Gliscor comes in and takes a respectable amout of damage. He can't hurt me badly, so I am better off Returning again.

Gliscor used Taunt.
Kangaskhan fell for the taunt!
Kangaskhan used Return.
Gliscor lost 28% of its health.
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.

Taunt does nothing at the moment. If he keeps hitting me, I will be in big trouble because I won't be able to rest, though. I can go for the kill now.

Danse Macabre switched in Tangrowth (lvl 100 Tangrowth ?).
Kangaskhan used Return.
Tangrowth lost 24% of its health.
Tangrowth's leftovers restored its health a little!
Tangrowth restored 6% of its health.

Tangrowth is revealed to me as his last Pokemon. Mantine can take him, but I expect a sleep is coming, so I'll absorb it with Kanga.

Kangaskhan used Return.
Tangrowth lost 25% of its health.
Tangrowth used Sleep Powder.
Kangaskhan fell asleep!
Kangaskhan's taunt wore off!

And it does. I'm not keeping him in against Tangrowth while asleep, so I think I have to let Rotom get hit right now.

groggy_realm switched in Rotom (lvl 100 Rotom).
Pointed stones dug into Rotom.
Rotom lost 12% of its health.
Tangrowth used Power Whip.
Rotom lost 63% of its health.
groggy_realm's Rotom fainted.

4-2 Danse Macabre

But it's stronger than I had expected and Rotom bites the dust. Mantine gets in for free, and hopfully can kill with a STAB Hidden Power Flying.

groggy_realm switched in Mantine (lvl 100 Mantine ?).
Pointed stones dug into Mantine.
Mantine lost 25% of its health.
Mantine used Hidden Power.
It's super effective!
Tangrowth lost 63% of its health.
Tangrowth used Power Whip.
Mantine lost 49% of its health.

Tangrowth survives, but barely. I outsped, too, so he should be dead right now.

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Mantine used Hidden Power.
Starmie lost 26% of its health.

But he switches for Starmie. Right now I should have rested and likely
would have stuck around for a while longer, but still didn't realize Thunderbolt was omitted from this Starmie' moveset.

Starmie used Ice Beam.
Mantine lost 18% of its health.
Mantine used Hidden Power.
Starmie lost 28% of its health.

Atleast Mantine hits it for some more damage, but is ready to be done in by another assault from the star.

Starmie used Ice Beam.
Mantine lost 7% of its health.
groggy_realm's Mantine fainted.

4-1 Danse Macabre

It's all up to Kangaskhan now.

groggy_realm switched in Kangaskhan (lvl 100 Kangaskhan ?).
Pointed stones dug into Kangaskhan.
Kangaskhan lost 12% of its health.
Danse Macabre switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Kangaskhan is fast asleep!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
Kangaskhan used Hammer Arm.
It's super effective!
Blissey lost 66% of its health.
Kangaskhan's speed was lowered.

Sleep Talk picks a good move for me and hits the fattie for two thirds of its massive HP.

Blissey used Softboiled.
Blissey restored 50% of its health.
Kangaskhan woke up!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
But it failed!

Sadly, I wake up again. I just have to assault the Blissey until it dies now.

Blissey used Toxic.
Kangaskhan was badly poisoned!
Kangaskhan used Return.
Blissey lost 52% of its health.
Kangaskhan is hurt by poison!
Kangaskhan lost 6% of its health.

Blissey uses Toxic. That means I need to Rest as fast as possible, because if Gliscor gets a Taunt off, he can stall out the poison until I die out.

Blissey used Softboiled.
Blissey restored 49% of its health.
Kangaskhan used Rest.
Kangaskhan fell asleep!
Kangaskhan restored 6% of its health.

We both heal up and I hope for the best with Sleep Talk.

Blissey used Wish.
Blissey made a wish!
Kangaskhan is fast asleep!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
Kangaskhan used Rest.
But it failed!

But I don't get it. Blissey prepares Gliscor or Tangrowth to make a Return. If its Tangrowth, I have a 66% chance to kill it here.

Danse Macabre switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Kangaskhan is fast asleep!
Kangaskhan used Sleep Talk.
Kangaskhan used Hammer Arm.
Kangaskhan's attack missed!
The wish came true!
Gliscor restored 50% of its health.
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.

Gliscor gets in for free because of the miss and heals up. He will probably hit me with Taunt so I go for a Return in hope I awake from my intentional slumber.

Gliscor used Taunt.
Kangaskhan fell for the taunt!
Kangaskhan woke up!
Kangaskhan used Return.
Gliscor lost 29% of its health.
Gliscor was hurt by its burn!
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.

I do wake up and he does Taunt me. With burn he is in range for a KO!

Gliscor used Earthquake.
Kangaskhan lost 17% of its health.
Kangaskhan used Return.
Gliscor lost 28% of its health.
Danse Macabre's Gliscor fainted.

3-1 Danse Macabre

Hah! Earthquake does little damage and Return finishes Gliscor off! Starmie is pretty much his last ditch effort to kill Kanga.

Danse Macabre switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).

And in he comes. I think Return will kill but I can't be sure. I know he can't kill me at my current HP, so I hope for the best.

Starmie used Surf.
Kangaskhan lost 39% of its health.
Kangaskhan used Return.
Starmie lost 65% of its health.
Danse Macabre's Starmie fainted.

2-1 Danse Macabre

And Starmie finally falls to Kanga. I don't know who will come in, but I think I got this match in the bag.

Danse Macabre switched in Tangrowth (lvl 100 Tangrowth ?).

A simple Return will put him out of comission.

Kangaskhan used Return.
Tangrowth lost 12% of its health.
Danse Macabre's Tangrowth fainted.
Kangaskhan's taunt wore off!

1-1

Tangrowth falls to a Return. Two fatties will now duke it out to decide the outcome of this match.

Kangaskhan used Hammer Arm.
It's super effective!
Blissey lost 37% of its health.
Danse Macabre's Blissey fainted.

groggy_realm wins!

The Blissey faints and I win the close and exciting match! We both congratulate eachother and go on our ways. But the battle was epic, so I thought it would make a good warstory.

PROPS:

+ Danse Macabre for an excellent match without using the BOG OU standards.
+ Kangaskhan for sticking it out through thick and thin to take out 4 Pokemon late-game.
+ Drapion for taking out Regice with a Sniper crit.
+ Hax, although evident was fairly equal on both sides.
+ Me for actually predicting to win the match.
+ My UU Stall team for winning a match against OUs.

CONS:
- Rotom for being rather useless other than burning Gliscor.
- Making some minor mistakes like letting Starmie spin away my Spikes.
- Me for clicking the OU Ladder.

EXCELLENT GAME DANSE MACABRE!

Eh, the war story was ok. The comments weren't great because they didn't really let the reader know what you were thinking.

With Rest, it appears you don't know it ALWAYS makes you sleep for 2 and only 2 turns. You used Sleep Talk when you should've known you would wake up; then Sleep Powder comes which IS random. Your next Rest you talk about "hoping" you'll wake up; you should've known you would wake up.

Still, seeing that sort of battle is pretty cool, even though it could've been better.

Well, rest awakes arent random. You wake up after 2 turns of sleeping. always. but i think early bird change that ( doesnt kanga have that?)

lol, redundance cause of 3 min diference =P

I never used Sleep Talk after resting while I woke up. Both times I woke up using Sleep Talk was after I switched in or got hit by Sleep Powder.

Oh god, I certainly hope it doesn't have Early Bird. Then Ghosts wall the shit out of that Kangaskhan.

I never used Sleep Talk after resting while I woke up. Both times I woke up using Sleep Talk was after I switched in or got hit by Sleep Powder.
That makes absolutely no difference (the switching in part). Sleep Powder is indeed random, however. But with Rest, it's not like the counter goes all wacky just by switching. It's STILLtwo turns, whether one turn happened then you switched or not.

I found your comments to the log quite lacking. Though there were some excellent moments, most of the battle amounted to nothing more than "A did B to C, so I'll go with D now".

Okay, fair enough. I thought it did, because I think it used to back in RBY or GSC, but I'll admit I didn't know that, so thank you.

It was pretty amazing that kangaskan did so well in an OU environent. It pulled through and won you the battle

Have you ever considered Early Bird Kangaskhan?

*Since Rest only lasts 2 turns normally, Early Bird makes it last only 1.

Kangaskhan:
Early Bird

Outrage
Hammer Arm / Earthquake
Rest
Sleep Talk

Sleep Talk prevents Kangaskhan from getting Locked into Outrage, while letting you Heal status and HP every 2 turns.
Hammer Arm / EQ deals with Steels that are Resistant to Outrage. Earthquake is preferred so you don't lose speed, or miss.

Outrage also deals awsome damage to Altaria whom is resistant to Hammer Arm, and Immune to EQ.

No Pokemon in UU is Resistant/Immune to both Earthquake/Hammer Arm and Outrage, except Magnet Rise Probopass.

No Pokemon in UU is Resistant/Immune to both Earthquake/Hammer Arm and Outrage, except Magnet Rise Probopass.
There are no Pokemon at all who resist Dragon+Fighting; it's just like Ghost+Fighting.

But then the problem lies in not having a reliable STAB move.
