Hello, Underused!

Professor Kink here to present to you Week 14 of the ORAS edition of Research Week!

Keep the following things in mind during every Research Week:
  • Be open-minded, don't just say something is terrible and walk away; look at its stats and typing and think something up!
  • Feel free to theorymon early in the research period, but make it clear you're doing so. Later in the period though, you will be expected to back up your posts with hard evidence like logs, actual sets, perhaps even teams.
  • Just because an analysis has been done for a Pokemon doesn't mean there isn't more to explore; it's very likely that something has gone unnoticed.
  • Do not post in this thread complaining about the Pokemon or movesets I choose and / or suggesting ones we should do for future weeks. Feel free to VM / PM me these suggestions, but don't expect me to always listen to you.
A few things to clarify:
  • Sign-ups can be as late as you want, but the week will end on Sunday.
  • Early period means the first three days of the Research Week, so let's keep the theorymoning to a minimum after this period. The late period refers to the last four days of the research week, where raw evidence and discussion should become the basis of the thread.
  • The prizes for Research Week have been decided; winning a Research Week will grant you half-ops on our IRC channel, #xyuu. Don't forget, participation in projects like Research Week help towards earning the Community Contributor badge!
  • I'm implementing a mandatory discussion in order to be considered as a winner of Research Week. If you do not post one somewhat-coherent post that describes the Pokemon that you're using, their roles, and their niche in the metagame, you will be disqualified from winning this week. Please post about your experiences no matter if you think you've got a chance to win or not.
  • Finally, I'd like to implore you to all please remember to post and save your replays. Often, these replays are the most informative sources of information about RW Pokemon - you can write a full two paragraphs about the role of a Pokemon, but often that can all be summed up with a video and an explanation of it.

Pokemon: Lanturn
Final Ranking: 1372 (19-4)
Honestly a bit disappointed, but that's more with my inability to find a working Lanturn set and to ladder with it.
My set was standard SpecsTurn:
Lanturn @ Choice Specs
Ability: Volt Absorb Water Absorb
EVs: 196 HP / 252 SpA / 60 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Grass Thunderbolt
This set was intended to play as a slow, bulky, volt switcher meant to play on VoltTurn teams and help eventually wear down walls for a Feraligatr switch. I believe this set is most effective paired with Feraligatr because it is naturally going to draw out Grass-types such as Shaymin, Tangrowth, and Roserade, and either Volt Switch into something that threatens them like the AcroBat set I had, or straight-up destroy things with Specs Ice Beam. I think it was decently successful, but not entirely, because Lanturn struggled to really survive a lot of the game, even hits I was sure I'd tank, and I ended up playing with my other U-turners/Volt Switchers simply because they got the job done better. Lanturn does have a small niche on any Volt-Turn team because it can beat Ground-types, and its lack of speed is its main advantage over Rotom-C so it can get the last Volt Switch and bring in something unscathed. It is probably more advisable to use it in some form of defense so it can provide a little more in terms of cleric support and scald burning.

http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-221833943: To be honest, Lanturn didn't really see too many opportunities in its inaugural battle, mostly because I got scared after Chandy took half its health off with Shadow Ball. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have judged its performance on that because specs chandy takes lives
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-221868485: This one is notable only because its the only one where I used a different set, with more of aim towards team support and taking weight off of Umbreon. Lanturn gets worn down far too quickly in this role for my taste, and spends a lot of time Heal Belling itself when random status chips away at its tanking ability.
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222251919 the sheer power of specs lanturn is demonstrated a little bit. also lo jolteon lol
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222449006 once again, Turn demonstrates a single moment of Pokemon-removal and breaks Cradily, which was the main thing stopping Gatr from sweeping. Things to note are the opponent's lack of hazard control, which ended up hurting his team quite a bit, as well as his general vulnerability to Water-types outside of Cradily
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222840793 AHA! and there's the monster from the deeps! Lanturn smashes cleanly through krook early-game, which takes a lot of pressure off of amphy and frees up the ability to switch, and spams volt switch to wear down khalB's pokes, notably Cresselia, to the point where Scarf Hydreigon can feed off scraps. Doesn't exactly tank the Dmeteor too well, and could probably have used better hazard control, but a decent game from thunderfish

In conclusion, I think Lanturn definitely has a niche on UU teams that like to preserve momentum, and it can be effective with proper Wish support. I doubt I'd advise its use as a specs user, as Rotom-C does the smash-Ground-users in better in my humble opinion.

Poliwrath is actually pretty good, its like a water Slurpuff in Rain that doesn't get Drain Punch.

The Set I used:
Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 136 Def / 124 Spe
Impish Nature
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Circle Throw
- Encore
Analysis:
Poliwrath is actually pretty good lol, counters gatr, suicune, sharpedo, and generally most stally pokes with a speedy toxic, encore, or sub. circle throw is good to force switches and rack up hazard damage, since most people will switch once they realize they're gatr/suicune/sharpedo can't do anything to it lol. The speed outruns like uninvested base 85's or something i forget. checks/forces out a lot of slow stall mons, can soft check a scarf darm, m-blastoise, etc
Partners:
Poliwrath pairs well generally with some cleric support/wish passing (florges), and with hazards to punish the forced switches. it also supports teammates weak to water/suicune in general lol. it appreciates a special wall (florges), and is best used on balanced/stally/fat teams. I personally pair it with a hp fire magneton too to trap forretress who can easily set up hazards on poliwrath.
Upon further inspection poliwrath and florges actually have really decent synergy, only losing to like lo darm, aerial ace m-aero (which is like all of them lol), specs/trick chandelure, and possibly others i can't think of atm.
Other analysis:
A lot of people don't expect this set, i guess belly drum is more common? also poliwrath is pretty under used (hehehehhehe) so a lot of people don't really know what it does. encore is pretty good in this tier, it can help set poliwrath up with a free sub, and set up for teammates too. (http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222274434 turn 29 encore the draco to give florges a free wish)
I'll post my team after this is over lol

(btw these are mostly like pretty high ladder matches)
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222516032
at the beginning(turn 3) i toxic the gastrodon
turn 18, then 25 and after is poll walling gatr
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222292362
played this guy twice, won the second time but its not a good demonstration of poli. turn 8 wrath saves me from a sweep from slowking, rest of the battle is just me choking to death lol
more to come~
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222547183
just wanna post this bc I'm mad salty about that game losing hax at the end >:[ poliwrath woulda won me the game at the end if i didn't miss :[
another thing to note though is aside from water types, poliwrath isn't much good against anything else, or at least hyper offense. it can take a hit or two but lack of a recovery move besides rest is a bit annoying. See how gatr pretty much did nothing tho hehe
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222649931
i kinda misplay at the beginning lol, turn 8 poliwrath sets up on an empoleon hehe, but turn 12 u see i can't do anything to a ghost type except for toxic lol. i get lucky in a fire blast dodge, but in the end poliwrath is the mvp and wins me the game.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222278013
turn 26 poliwrath comes in against a sub cm suicune and proceeds to win :] (with a lil help from magneton lol
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222274434
turn 15 i choke with donphan a bit, poliwrath forces sharpedo out tho which i could have capatilzed on but didn't want to take the risk at the time. turn like 24 mega sharpedo's crunch does enough to break a potential sub, so you can potentially sacrifice speed for more bulk to survive with a sub i suppose
252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 84-100 (21.8 - 26%) i prefer speed tho.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222101364
turn 15 poliwrath eats up a sd abomasnow's unboosted seed bomb, just showing how bulky wrath can be
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222087767
this battle is kinda bad, but shows how well poliwrath can take advantage of slower stall mons like dusclops for example, and turn 31 eats up a -1 zam's psyshock lol
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222085908
turn 6 poliwrath kinda handles a m-blastoise, turn 37 poliwrath handles a machamp+blissey http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-221973493
dif team, same florges stall concept, i get my ass whooped like the entire battle but somehow win lol, poliwrath puts in some work throughout
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-221970051
lower ladder poliwrath on a more offensive team, i learned after a few battles it doesn't really fit on offense, at least the set i was using

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 136 Def / 124 Spe

Roserade @ Black Sludge
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe

Donphan @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 132 HP / 252 Atk / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard

poliwrath analysis already said previously.
magneton: As said before, in early stages of testing, forretress was able to come into poliwrath, not to mention pretty much my entire team, and do whatever the hell it wanted to, so I thought scarf magneton would be a good steel trapper, also semi getting rid of empoleon and trapping m-aggron, and being able to get a strong hit off on a lot of mons, as well as being a bird check and m-abomasnow check, and sd lucario check lol
Mega-Aero: S rank mon, stealth rocker, crobat + m-pidgeot counter, outspeeds pretty much the entire tier, good strong mon in general.
Roserade: bc of the switches poliwrath can force, i decided i wanted fast spikes + some status, so roserade was my choice with sleep powder, as well as being a grass switch-in + special kinda wall. Since i wasn't really going for damage with it i went with max hp and speed for decent bulk and speed.
Florges: I think i talked about florges already, but all around wall, wish passing, heal bell support for the team.
Donphan: secondary defensive mon, sturdy is so good when you can apply hazard pressure, speed outspends i think like min speed empoleon, ampharos i think, ice shard soft checks salamence and other dragons, also slurpuff kinda lol
idk im so bad at this lol

Now, I haven't played enough to really have a say about Lanturn's viability in UU. However, I do think I know some stuff to have a general "feel" of what it can offer in the tier. It all comes down to how it will deliver higher up in the ladder. Anyways, so here's the set that I am currently using for Lanturn.

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Def / 216 SpD
Calm Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Volt Switch
- Scald
- Ice Beam
Thing is, Volt Absorb on Lanturn lost lots of it luster in the decline of relevant Electric-type Pokemon that it is supposed to handle. Comparing Gen VI to the past generation, Electric-types are also not as relevant in UU as it was in Gen V; there, we still had Zapdos and Raikou among the front-runners in the field. Now, both Pokemon has gone off to OU, as well as another Gen VI addition in Mega Manectric. As it stands now, the only significant threats that I see that is worth the ability's usage are Rotom-H and Heliolisk. But, there are more problematic things here in UU that are of concern and one of them is the resident Water-types. That's why I made the change to Water Absorb; with this, Lanturn can cater more to the relevant issues at hand by serving as a pivot for 'em nasty bulky waters.

Its typing allows it to both come in and hurt most of the Water-types for good damage. Most of the appeal though comes in the Water immunity, which deters offensive Water-type barrages and the infamous scald burns, or in its satanic form, the critical Scald burns. Do take note that I only have the defensive pivot set, so its dealings with Water-types are more passive. Nonetheless, it can force some switches with its decent bulk and good typing, spread paralysis, and provide slow Volt Switches to bring in its allies to the field safely. I seek to center around this kind of support for my team.

  • This replay shows the best promise so far which showcased Lanturn's capabilities quite well. It did a good a job pressuring Vaporeon, Mega Ampharos, and a little later, Entei which ultimately led to their demise. Lanturn forced some good switches there to gain some momentum; most notably, it forced a switch from Entei to Vaporeon, which let Heracross pick up the severely damaged Pokemon.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222465958
  • Lanturn handled both Crobat and Chandelure which eventually paved way for a Heracross sweep.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uu-222463776
  • Reuniclus+Heracross having fun! Lanturn landed a small role in paralyzing Arcanine, allowing Reuniclus to get in, outspeed, and continue to do its thing.

Again, this is still low ladder so things might look too good as it really is. But hopefully, Lanturn will prove its worth and produce similar form deeper into the ladder. That also goes for me to do my job as well, because technically I'm the one making them work lel.

Update!

Well, my first research week ever sucked. School chores got in the way a bit so I decided I'd just ladder at the final day. But then, I just spent most of the time revamping my team and lost rhythm. Tilt happened early, team was constantly changed, and I was just mentally out of it and I eventually gave up midway. But of course, I do have some thoughts to share about my experience with Lanturn.

Lanturn has decent bulk; not exactly great, but its immunity and resistances let it come in on many things. It can get worn down easily, but if you force switches well you can accumulate Leftovers recovery to keep it somewhat healthy. Wish support is definitely appreciated as Lanturn has no way to reliably heal itself. Water Absorb really came through at times, and Lanturn was consistent in bringing in Pokemon to the field safely. It's a decent partner for a Volt-Turn core; Crobat in particular is a good candidate, providing Defog support and covering Lanturn's Grass and Ground-type weaknesses. One thing to note is that it has poor offenses, so you have to pair it with a hard-hitting Pokemon to take advantage of the free turns it can provide. After all, it really can't do much to some Pokemon it is supposed to threaten, honestly.

All in all, Lanturn did had its moments, but at times, I am left with the feeling that a better Pokemon can fill up its place. Mediocre offenses and defenses really held it back.

Ranking Points

I got to the 1450's before the tilts, but now, I finished at an astonishing 1356. "OTL

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold/Calm Nature
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Toxic/T-wave
- Substitute/Heal Bell

^ For anyone looking for a nice experimental Lanturn set. I find it to be more viable then the basic Specs set. It's Defenses are average and nothing to write home about, but it's Moveset and Volt Absorb can make it tricky to deal with since there arent' a lot of mons that spam EQ without setting up or attempting to set up first. The major threats are Nidos and Krook. I'll be posting more up on the other two mons later and finishing up my full review of LantUUrn

My rank was good then shit happened so I'm just going to share my knowledge with Lanturn!
First off here are all the sets I used with various teams!

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 92 SpA / 164 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Charge Beam
- Ice Beam
- Scald

Sets up on Empoleons and some tentecruels. Able to hurt anything that switches in after sub and can sweep in the right circumstances. I only swept once with it I think.
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-221873664 <---- sweep

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 92 SpA / 164 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Stockpile
- Charge Beam
- Scald

My favorite set that can set up on florges as well as out speed it. Works well but has trouble with stuff like shaymin and roserade!
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222215428 Hustles around with enemy team until Lanturn is able to set up and check his entire team!
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222226069 Sets up on P2
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222303158 Lanturn finds a brighter way!

Lanturn @ Life Orb
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 84 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Wild Charge
- Waterfall
- Bounce

Thought it would be cool but ultimately sucks! Priority and the element of surprise is its only niche but is generally effective!

Lanturn @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Agility
- Discharge
- Scald
- Ice Beam

Surprising this is a good late game sweeper. With great coverage and stab it can clean up late game.

Lanturn @ Assault Vest
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 144 HP / 184 SpA / 180 Spe
Modest Nature
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam
- Dazzling Gleam/ Hidden Power Grass

This was the most effective and probably most viable set Lanturn can run! Makes a great pivot and has great coverage! It can knock out Hydreigon with Dazzle and burn spread.
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222412950 Lanturn assists in Volt Turn shenanigans to keep leverage
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/uu-222633951 Didnt win but good synergy throughout and misplays ultimately destroy me

Lanturn @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam

I call this one the 6v5 because it leads off and catches your opponent off guard by out speeding and killing. Effective against stuff like lead Nidos, Krook, and Rotom-H. Volturn keeps momentum.

So lets get right down to the viability of Lanturn. First off
125 58 58 76 76 67
Hp stat is godly and everything else is meh. Since the thing has high hp the first thing I though of was sub charge beam on suicune. Unfortunately this looked a lot more effective on papaer than in actually PS. Charge beam has 16pp making it only 8 with pressure suicune. I ran out of pp while suicune set up calm minds. Well that screwed me. I could still set up on Empoleons without roar and Tentacruels without sludge bomb but i wanted to set up on Florges so I searched for something to boost my spdef. I found Amnesia and Stockpile. Ooh stockpile looks like a cool option! The the second set you see in my list was born and I could set up on florges, forretress, and some Rotom heats. It was exciting to see Lanturn having a place in the meta. It sounds like a stupid set but scald burns and grass types and charge beam sets up behind sub. Its actually really effective as no move is just a stab. It all works as notes in a song would.

Eventually I got bored with the sub set and moves on to more sillier things. I looked around in the move poll and found sucker punch and some descent physical stabs as well as bounce for grass types. 58 attack sucks so as fun as the set looks it was hard to find it effective even with the unexpected twist. I moved on to the pivot set which is really worth it! I was able to switch into special attackers and do super effective damage or just volt turn outta there. Not as fun as sub set but it was much more effective. The team I was using it with was Krookodile weak. All my special attackers were weak to EQ and I didnt want to make another team. I kept leading with Lanturn against krook and krook would stay in and EQ. Wow if you want to eq then i'll scarf and KO with Hydro!!.... so that's what i did. I made modest scarf to kill leads like krook and nidos. Was nice but made me easy set up bait and outsped by maero.

One more thing. Lanturn's typing and descent defenses make it able to check Mega Pidgeot. And another thing if you use Lanturn. Don't switch in a volt absorb Lanturn into Mega Ampharos. I like Lanturn and might try to get it to C rank but its a stretch. I think its a lot more viable than Stunfisk.

Ended around ~1300, not going to bother screen shotting because obviously it didn't win.

Poliwrath is a really fun mon, there's no doubt about that. I used the following set the entire time:

Poliwrath @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Ice Punch
- Waterfall
- Belly Drum
- Earthquake

The idea was pretty simple obviously.

Teammates were:

Tornadus-I / Mega Swampert / Roserade / Snorlax / Bronzong

later Bronzong was changed to Azelf.

Not much to say. I'm not terribly good with rain, because I like to make my matches drag on a bit longer and typically get wins by learning the way the opponent plays and taking advantage of bold predictions afterwards. Rain, and particular rain where you want to utilize a belly drum Poliwrath aren't super conductive to that - you're often sacrificing to get your rain up and very transparent in what you're going to do.

As well, had a few more frustrations early on because of my tendency to predict - lower ladder was silly in the plays and the bizarre crap they did... hitting myself in confusion after taking a confuse ray from a Chandelure with a +6 Poliwrath is......frustrating to say the least.

Overall though he's a viable mon, just used a playstyle that didn't suit me as a player too much.
