VGC Raging Bolt

[OVERVIEW]

* Raging Bolt, with a higher Special Attack than Flutter Mane, massive HP, and good defenses, serves its role as a bulky damage dealer exceptionally well.

* Don't let Raging Bolt's middling Speed fool you; it's signature move, Thunderclap, makes sure that isn't an issue in a lot of situations, making the Tornadus + Urshifu-R matchup virtually trivial.

* Raging Bolt pairs insanely well with Rillaboom and Incineroar, providing Fake Out pressure for Raging Bolt to either setup with the Calm Mind set or deal massive damage with the 3 Attacks set. Rillaboom also provides more longevity in Grassy Terrain for Raging Bolt, which can make it immensely difficult to KO. Chien-Pao and Choice Scarf Urshifu-R are also excellent partners at dealing with Raging Bolt's worst matchup, Landorus.

* That said, Raging Bolt does still have bad matchups despite its strengths, one of which is the aforementioned Landorus, due to it being able to threaten OHKOs against Raging Bolt with Earth Power. Chien-Pao can also be a tricky matchup, as it can deal massive damage with Ice Spinner or Icicle Crash and cause mindgames with Sucker Punch and Thunderclap. Flutter Mane is able to deal huge damage to Raging Bolt even when it Terastallizes, and can very comfortably take unboosted Thunderclaps.

[SET]
3 Attacks (Raging Bolt) @ Magnet / Booster Energy / Safety Goggles
Ability: Protosynthesis
Level: 50
Tera Type: Electric / Grass / Fairy
EVs: 228 HP / 4 Def / 180 SpA / 4 SpD / 92 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Thunderclap
- Draco Meteor
- Protect

[SET COMMENTS]

* Thunderbolt is there for good consistent damage, especially with Tera Electric with Magnet, while Thunderclap helps make up for Raging Bolt's middling Speed. Draco Meteor is a more powerful option, being able to OHKO Pokémon like Landorus when used with Booster Energy. However, it can be forced to switch out and lose the boost when using Booster Energy.

* Magnet is the most consistent item option, especially when paired with Tera Electric, drastically increasing Raging Bolt's damage. Booster Energy is another option, as it not only boosts its Electric-type moves, but it also boosts Draco Meteor. Safety Goggles prevents Amoonguss from redirecting Thunderclaps away from Urshifu-R, and Life Orb gives similar benefits as Booster Energy while letting Raging Bolt freely switch in and out to reset Draco Meteor stat drops, but Raging Bolt has to be careful when using it due to the downside of being chipped down if not taken into account.

* The Speed investment allows Raging Bolt to outspeed Dragapult, Flutter Mane, and Chien-Pao while under Tailwind, allowing it to hit them with its stronger options like Thunderbolt and Draco Meteor. The HP is optimized for Life Orb chip if used.

* Tera Electric will often be the strongest and most consistent option. Tera Grass is a good option to not only resist Ground-type moves from Landorus, but also if you want to ignore Amoonguss' Spore and redirection with Rage Powder without running Safety Goggles. Finally, Tera Fairy is just a strong neutral Tera type to pair with such amazing bulk.

[SET]
Calm Mind (Raging Bolt) @ Leftovers / Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Level: 50
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 188 HP / 140 Def / 100 SpA / 68 SpD / 12 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Thunderclap
- Dragon Pulse
- Calm Mind
- Protect / Thunderbolt

[SET COMMENTS]

* Thunderclap is a good main STAB move, as it allows Raging Bolt to focus less on Speed and go all out on bulk investment, as it will be able to boost up then hit most foes before they can retaliate.

* While Dragon Pulse is usually an underwhelming move, it serves as a strong neutral STAB move into Pokemon that resist Electric-type attacks when paired with Calm Mind.

* In some situations, Thunderbolt can be used over Protect, due to Raging Bolt being bulky enough to where Protect isn't mandatory on Calm Mind sets, and for consistency against support Pokémon such as Follow Me Ogerpon-W where Thunderclap would fail.

* Leftovers is preferred over Booster Energy on the Calm Mind set, providing immense longevity with Grassy Terrain from Rillaboom. However, Booster Energy can be used if you need that extra damage, as the Special Attack boost changes many calculations, for example, being able to OHKO bulky Flutter Mane at +1 with Helping Hand and Protosynthesis where you'd be unable to without Booster Energy.

* The Defense EVs with the HP EVs allow Raging Bolt to live Icicle Crash from Adamant Chien-Pao. The HP EVs make the HP optimized for Leftovers and Grassy Terrain recovery. The bulk investment ensures that Raging Bolt is able to tank 2 unboosted Moonblasts from Timid Flutter Mane at +1 Special Defense after Leftovers and Grassy Terrain recovery combined with Protect. The Special Defense EVs hit an even number to be optimal for the Calm Mind boost.

* Tera Grass lets Raging Bolt resist Ground-type moves and provides an immunity to Spore and Rage Powder, so Thunderclap can't be redirected away from Urshifu-R.

Ftr i really dont think these sets are right. Calm mind should always be lefties, Electric should be the first Tera on offensive sets and Magnet and Goggles should be there and Life Orb problaby shouldn't at least not as first item

[OVERVIEW]

* Raging Bolt is the new Paradox form of Raikou, and with it's SpA stat that's higher than Flutter Mane, feels a bit weird to specifically mention flutter here, but ill leave it to you if you want to change that massive HP and really good defenses, it serves it's role as a bulky damage dealer exceptionally well.

* Don't let it's middling speed fool you, it's signature move, Thunderclap, a special attacking Electric-type version of Sucker Punch, makes sure that isn't an issue in a lot of situations, making the Tornadus + Urshifu-R combo matchup virtually trivial.

* Raging Bolt pairs insanely well with Rillaboom and Incineroar, with both providing Fake Out pressure for Raging Bolt to either setup with the Calm Mind set, or just deal massive damage with the 3 Attacks set. Rillaboom also provides more longevity in providing Grassy Terrain for Raging Bolt, (AC) which can make it immensely difficult to take knock out. Chien-Pao or Choice Scarf Urshifu-R are also excellent partners due to handily at dealing with Raging Bolt's worst MU, Landorus.

make another point to talk about Raging Bolt's checks, such as lando/flut/chien pao/etc

3 Attacks (Raging Bolt) @ Magnet / Booster Energy / Safety Goggles / Life Orb

can consider changing the spread to a simple 252/252/4 one instead, reasoning below

[SET COMMENTS]

* Thunderbolt is there for good consistent damage, especially with Tera Electric with Magnet. , (AC) while Thunderclap is self-explanatory, it's one of the biggest reasons to run Raging Bolt, and can absolutely helps make up for Raging Bolt's middling speed. Draco Meteor is just an overall good nuke option, (AC) being able to OHKO Pokémon like Landorus when used with Booster Energy in some situations. Just be careful when you're running Booster Energy as this means you may be forced to switch out and lose the boost after. (just mention that Life Orb can be used to a similar effect if Booster Energy is already on something else, or to allow Raging Bolt to switch more freely)

* Magnet is probably the most consistent item option, allowing Raging Bolt to just deal big consistent damage, especially when paired with Tera Electric, drastically increasing Raging Bolt's damage. Booster Energy is a good strong option another potential option, however, as mentioned before it is risky with Draco Meteor, but being able to do around 80% to Assault Vest Rillaboom is no mean feat. (talk about how it boosts Draco Meteor as well instead, if you really want) Safety Goggles is simple enough, Amoonguss not being able to redirect Thunderclaps away from Urshifu can be really important. Safety Goggles prevents Amoonguss from redirecting Thunderclaps away from Urshifu-R, and finally Life Orb is like Booster Energy, and it's commonly ran, but running an item that takes away your health on a bulky Pokémon like that can be dangerous so be careful when running it. (this line is ok i guess but it reads kinda awkward so try to rephrase it)

* The speed tier allows you to outspeed Dragapult while inside of under Tailwind. The SpA investment hits the last stat bump, and the HP is optimised for Life Orb chip should you choose to run that. (i dont think Pult is that relevant of a mention currently, maybe talk about Flut and Chien-Pao instead if you want, but I feel that a simple 252/252/4 spread is fine for this set since it has Thunderclap)

* Tera Electric will often be the strongest and most consistent options, you may find it hard to stop Raging Bolt itself unless you run Landorus. Tera Grass is a good option to not only resist ground moves from Landorus, but also if you want to ignore Amoonguss without running Safety Goggles. And finally, Tera Fairy is just a strong neutral tera Tera type for a Pokémon with such amazing bulk.

- Calm Mind
- Protect / Thunderbolt

added in Booster Energy because BE Calm Mind is still pretty popular and Calm Mind lets Raging Bolt take full advantage of Booster

[SET COMMENTS]

*add in a line here talking about Thunderclap being a good main stab,

* While Dragon Pulse is usually an weak and/or underwhelming move, on a Pokémon like Raging Bolt, it's far from it. On the Calm Mind set, it's ran over Draco Meteor to both preserve the SpA boosts from Calm Mind, and due to the fact that along with Calm Mind it does more than enough damage. it serves as a strong neutral STAB move into Pokemon that resist Electric attacks when paired with Calm Mind.

*add in a line talking about how Thunderbolt is situationally good to have, some players run it on Calm Mind sets over Protect for the consistency so that they don't get Thunderclap fished against stuff like Ogerpon-W, Raging Bolt is bulky enough such that Protect isnt mandatory on CM sets

* Leftovers is used preferred over Booster Energy on the Calm Mind set, (AC) due to the fact that after a few Calm Minds, it's able to wall almost any special attacker (e.g. Flutter, Latias, Iron Crown), and have providing immense longevity when paired with said held item alongside Grassy Terrain from the Rillaboom you've most likely paired with it.

* The physical defense EVs with the HP EVs allow Bolt to live Icicle Crash from Adamant Chien-Pao 100% of the time. The HP EVs make it so that the HP is optimised for Leftovers and Grassy Terrain recovery. Moonblast from 252 Timid Flutter Mane 3HKO's at +1 Def in Grassy Terrain. (is this with Lefties+terrain?) The current defensive investment ensures that Raging Bolt is able to take 2 unboosted Moonblasts from Timid Flutter Mane after Leftovers and Grassy Terrain recovery. The 100 SpA EVs hit the 2nd stat bump jump point, and the SpD EVs hit an even number to be optimal for the Calm Mind boost.

* There are 3 main reasons for Tera Grass; It now resists Ground-type moves, Tera Grass lets Raging Bolt resist Ground-type moves and provides immunity it is now immune to Spore and Rage Powder so Thunderclap can't be redirected away from Urshifu-R. while still keeping the resistance to Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes.

  • Be more aware of the difference between "its" and "it's." In particular, "its" is the possessive form of "it" (think of "his" vs "he"), whereas "it's" is the contraction of "it is." A good way to tell if you should replace "it's" is if the sentence makes no sense if you replaced "it's" with "it is." For example, "Raging Bolt with its Special Attack higher than Flutter Mane, massive HP, and good defences, it serves it is role as a bulky damage dealer exceptionally well."
  • "and really good defences defences(wouldnt say its defenses are "really good")"
For one, Smogon uses American English, so you should be correcting the spelling of "defences" to "defenses." The other thing is that you, as a GP checker, have no say in the details of a set since that is the domain of the QC team. You can remove "really" if you think that it is fluff, but comments like this are concerning because they sound like you are trying to "take over" the analysis, when in reality, the goal of GP is just to correct grammar and make the piece read better.
  • "makes sure that isn't an issue in alot of situations"
"Alot" is not a word. It must be written as "a lot" as they are two separate words.
  • "Life Orb can be used to a similar effect if Booster Energy is taken, or if you want to be able to switch your Raging Bolt more freely."
If you are familiar with lists of two items, you don't put a comma in between the two items (for example, "I like cookies and cake."). Similarly, you don't put a comma when there are two items separated by the "or."
  • "The Speed tier allows you to outspeed Dragapult, Flutter Mane, and Chien-pao while under Tailwind, allowing you to hit them with your stronger options like Thunderbolt and Draco Meteor."
The word "you" should never be used to refer to a Pokemon. The only pronoun that should be used is "it."
  • "In some situations, Thunderbolt can be good to have used over Protect, due to Raging Bolt being bulky enough to where Protect isn't mandatory on Calm Mind sets, and for consistency against supportive Pokémon such as Follow Me Ogerpon-W, where Thunderclap would otherwise fail."
??? Where did this come from? If you consulted with the writer and they felt that this detail was worth including, then you should have indicated that you consulted with the writer when adding that. Otherwise, you shouldn't be adding or removing content in a way that alters the meaning of sentences, which this is a clear case of. This sort of thing should be handled by QC, not by us. Edit nvm, though I personally disagree that the sentence would have been clearer if you had moved it earlier -- I think it would have been fine. This point is still one that you should keep in mind.
  • "While Dragon Pulse is usually an underwhelming move, it serves as a strong neutral STAB move into Pokémon that resist Electric-type attacks when paired with Calm Mind."
We don't include the accent when writing "Pokemon." This is to make it more accessible to more writers who often won't have an accent key on their keyboard.

Left as GP 0/1 because there are some QC issues that need to be sorted out (the GP team doesn't want to include "stat bumps" in EV explanations).

It is fine to leave stat bumps and small EV optimizations out of the analysis. The only important ones are those relating to significant KOs/living specific stuff/outspeeding stuff.

* Tera Electric will often be the strongest and most consistent option. Tera Grass is a good option to not only resist ground Ground-type moves from Landorus, but also if you want to ignore Rage Powder from Amoonguss (What does "ignore Amoonguss" mean?) without running Safety Goggles. And finally Finally, Tera Fairy is just a strong neutral Tera type for a Pokémon Pokemon with such amazing bulk.
* Leftovers is preferred over Booster Energy on the Calm Mind set, providing immense longevity with Grassy Terrain from Rillaboom. (Then why is Booster Energy listed in the set?) This whole line can be removed, was an oversight from the initial QC

CbuttyVGC In the future please notify QC directly if there are any issues with content during GP, thanks.

[OVERVIEW]

* Raging Bolt, with a higher Special Attack than Flutter Mane, massive HP, and good defenses, serves its role as a bulky damage dealer exceptionally well.

* Don't let Raging Bolt's middling Speed fool you,; (ASC, RC) it's signature move, Thunderclap, (AC) makes sure that isn't an issue in a lot of situations, making the Tornadus + Urshifu-R matchup virtually trivial.

* Raging Bolt pairs insanely well with Rillaboom and Incineroar, providing Fake Out pressure for Raging Bolt to either setup with the Calm Mind set, (RC) or deal massive damage with the 3 Attacks set. Rillaboom also provides more longevity in Grassy Terrain for Raging Bolt, which can make it immensely difficult to KO. Chien-Pao and Choice Scarf Urshifu-R are also excellent partners at dealing with Raging Bolt's worst matchup, Landorus.

* That said, Raging Bolt does still have bad matchups despite its strengths, one of which is the aforementioned Landorus, (AC) due to it being able to threaten OHKOs against Raging Bolt with Earth Power.

However, it can be forced to switch out and lose the boost when using Booster Energy,. (RC) Life Orb can be used to a similar effect if Booster Energy is taken or if you want to be able to switch your Raging Bolt more freely. (Moving this point to the items section.)

* Magnet is the most consistent item option, especially when paired with Tera Electric, drastically increasing Raging Bolt's damage. Booster Energy is another option, as it not only boosts your its Electric-type moves, but it also boosts Draco Meteor. Safety Goggles prevents Amoonguss from redirecting Thunderclaps away from Urshifu-R, and Life Orb gives similar benefits as Booster Energy while letting Raging Bolt freely switch in and out to reset Draco Meteor stat drops, but has to be careful on Raging Bolt has to be careful when using it due to the downside of being chipped down if not taken into account.

EVs: 188 HP / 140 Def / 100 SpA / 68 SpD / 12 Spe

IVs: 20 Atk

- Dragon Pulse
- Calm Mind
- Protect / Thunderbolt

[SET COMMENTS]

* Thunderclap is a good main STAB move, as it allows Raging Bolt to focus less on Speed and go all out on bulk investment, as it will be able to boost up then hit most foes before they can retaliate.

* While Dragon Pulse is usually an underwhelming move, it serves as a strong neutral STAB move into Pokemon that resist Electric-type attacks when paired with Calm Mind.

* In some situations, Thunderbolt can be used over Protect, due to Raging Bolt being bulky enough to where Protect isn't mandatory on Calm Mind sers sets, and for consistency against support Pokémon such as Follow Me Ogerpon-W, (RC) where Thunderclap would fail.

* Leftovers is preferred over Booster Energy on the Calm Mind set, providing immense longevity with Grassy Terrain from Rillaboom., (AP, RC) however However, Booster Energy can be used if you need that extra damage, (AC) as the Special Attack boost changes many calculations. (This is functional but also vague. I'd like to see an example of a calculation that gets changed as a result of the Special Attack boost.)
