Pokemon Matchmaking !
Banner coming soon

Welcome to SV OU Matchmaking ! It's a comptetition where you can share the best teammate(s) for a chosen Pokemon, to explore the Pokemon's full potential ! Try to be as original as possible, but remember that troll sets / Pokemon will not be allowed, you need to find the best teammate, not the funniest !

At the beginning of the week, we will submit one set. You will have until Day 4 to find (and post) the best teammate possible for the Pokemon of the week. From Day 5, you will have to vote for the best teammate of the week. The winner will be in our Hall of Fame, and in the
SV OU Great Cores archives.

Rules :

  • You may submit only one teammate per week.
  • You cannot vote for your own Pokemon.
  • You can vote for only one Pokemon.
  • You can reserve a teammate, but if you haven't properly filled it in within 48h of your reservation, it may be taken by someone else. Additionally, teammates that haven't been filled out by the time voting starts will not be included in the voting phase.
  • You may nominate a different set for a Pokémon that has already been submitted. However, it's important that the set is distinct from the other submission. We won't accept submissions where the only difference is something simple like 1 move or an EV spread unless the change substantially alters how the core functions.
  • Finally, please follow the forum rules.

Posting Tips
No specific types of detail are mandatory, but things that are worth considering when writing your explanation include:
  • How the Pokémon listed is useful to the nominated partner and vice versa
  • Why the set listed is chosen over other variants, if applicable
  • Strengths and/or weaknesses of the core in question
  • Potential options for additional partners when using the core
  • Replays that show off the core in full force

Round 1 Swords Dance Sneasler

:sv/sneasler:
Sneasler @ Air Balloon / White Herb / Grassy Seed
Ability: Unburden
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Dire Claw
- Acrobatics

Since the release of Pokemon Home, Sneasler has proven to be one of the most powerful sweeper with its ability and its high Attack and Speed stats. What Pokemon pair well with it?

You have until Sunday, the 23rd of July 23:59 GMT +2 to post your teammate

My submission for a partner to Sneasler is none other than everyone's favourite trapping threat, Heatran! The idea here is for Heatran to trap and kill bulkier pokemon that can survive a hit from Sneasler at +2 and stop the sweep, as well as generally output offensive pressure on the special side. Futhermore, Heatran is a very dangerous threat against many stall teams right now, which could normally handle Sneasler quite well. I'll also note that with the balloon set on Sneasler, Heatran can sometimes lure ground-type attacks that Sneasler can then switch in on. This is most ideal with something like :Clodsire:, but is also something to keep in mind for common ground types such as :Ting-Lu:, :Landorus-Therian:, and :Great Tusk:. Finally, while Heatran appreciates the ability to tera, it doesn't absolutely need it to function, and can leave Sneasler the crucial ability to Tera Flying on its sweep. Here's the specific set I have in mind:

1689885272011.png

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

This Heatran will work wonders to dismantle defensive cores that would inhibit Sneasler's sweep. With how high-flying and offensive the current SV OU meta is, Shed Shell isn't something Heatran has to worry about anymore, and without Clefable or any other magic guard users, everything is going to feel the pain of Magma Storm. Earth Power is good accompanying coverage, but Taunt is the secondary star on this set, making sure that walls can't heal up and thus will remain crippled for Sneasler to clean up later. The last move is a bit open for debate, and I think that Flash Cannon, Toxic, and Tera Blast all have some merit, but with Unburden Sneasler in mind as a partner, I want to make sure hazards are up on the field. Sneasler will really appreciate hazards to help secure OHKOs, and having rocks from Heatran opens up more options for Spikers such as :Garchomp:, :Ting-Lu:, :Glimmora: and especially :Samurott-Hisui:. EVs are full offensive here, we want Heatran to output as much offensive pressure as possible and not let the enemy team recover.

Some checks to Sneasler than I think this Heatran set covers very nicely in particular:

:Toxapex: gets trapped to Magma Storm, Taunted, and dies to Earth Power. Heatran will definitely take some chip damage, but should cleanly and reliably get the kill.

:Garganacl: can be scary if running Earthquake, but if you confirm that it is not an Earthquake set, Heatran can likely trap and kill the salt block. Heatran will of course take a lot of damage back from Salt Cure in the meanwhile, but if it means removing the best defensive check to Sneasler, it'll be worth it.

:Gholdengo: does only moderate damage to Heatran (~43% from scarf or other max special attack sets), but needs. Only mostly full speed investment Gholdengo sets will outspeed Heatran as well, so bulkier NP variants can be outsped and killed quite easily. Note that Gholdengo somehow survives a Magma Storm hit, it won't be trapped, so keep that in mind when making predictions.

:Amoonguss: can only hurt Heatran with the semi-rare Stomping Tantrum, and must be afraid of Magma Storm. Heatran getting slept isn't a huge deal, since it means Sneasler can likely survive 1 hit from Amoonguus. not get slept, and keep sweeping.

:Slowking-Galar: Typical sets can't hurt Heatran at all, and even Surf only does ~45%. Heatran shuts down the pivoting from Chilly Reception via Taunt and can trap + kill Slowking, a very annoying and bulky pivot in general that could also give Sneasler pause.

:Zapdos: Not the best mon for Heatran to handle, but can switch into Hurricanes with some ease (~28% from offensive sets) and help deduce the Zapdos set and EVs based on whether Zapdos outspeeds Heatran or not. Zapdos may also be forced to switch out for fear of Toxic from Heatran. and taking some Magma Storm chip may be just enough to give Sneasler the kill later.

:Dondozo: Heatran will absolutely need to Tera grass to beat this, but if you can use it, the big fish is almost certainly trapped, taunted, and dead.

:Skeledirge: The croc seems pretty rare in the post-home meta, but Heatran can easily switch into it and apply pressure to the opponents team. Since it can't be trapped by Magma Storm, taunting it to accumulate chip damage is likely the better option.

As previously mentioned, a great teammate to this duo would be a spiker to add even more hazard pressure. With this, :Gholdengo: becomes another great teammate, since it can generally keep hazards up as well as offering some speed control and utility via Trick and the scarf set to further cripple walls that might hinder Sneasler. Lastly, Sneasler with Balloon probably wants some help switching in to maintain the balloon for as long as possible, and Heatran definitely enjoys the assistance coming in as well, which makes me think :Zapdos: would be a good teammate, bringing the ground immunity, fighting resist, and generally complimenting Heatran quite well. It should also be noted that both :gholdengo: and :zapdos: do not need to tera to function at their best, once again giving Sneasler the option to get STAB on Acrobatics on its sweep if need be.

Samurott-Hisui @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sharpness
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Water
Jolly Nature
- Ceaseless Edge
- Razor Shell
- Knock Off
- Aqua Jet

what does this pokemon do? well it annoys the shit out of gholdengo its biggest enemy, and with spikes it can force a lot of chip on pokemon such as dondozo, pex, gholdengo, slowking-g, and can even knock off skeledirge item + setup spikes to make it very annoying for skeledirge to check sneasler.

This also helps its late game sweeping potential as it weakens mons into range of its acrobatics, or its stabs

Reserving kingambit

Kingambit is like a thorn in my side that no matter how hard I can pull, it never seems to come out, but now is not the time for complaining (that’s what the upcoming suspect thread is for) so for now I present you with a list of reasons why it’s a strong teammate for sneasler.

:xy/kingambit:
Kingambit @ Lum Berry
Ability: Supreme Overlord
Tera Type: Dark / Fairy / Flying
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
- Kowtow Cleave
- Iron Head / Low Kick

Kingambit can fit on any team, however shines on the ho teams that sd sneasler is suited to. The idea is simple: make a dent in your opponent’s physical wall with one, and then claim the kill with the other while the former pokemon gets sent straight to Hell for its long history of committing war crimes. This is strong both ways, as both mons are equipped well to put big dents into big walls. Lum berry is chosen over other items as it makes gambit a better cleaner, though there are strong alternatives.

Take renowned physical “wall” great tusk as an example here:

+2 252+ Atk Supreme Overlord 1 ally fainted Kingambit Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Great Tusk: 193-228 (44.4 - 52.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Sneasler Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Great Tusk: 314-370 (72.3 - 85.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

This idea works with most mons, and is the foundation of ho, however there is synergy here’s outside of the ho approach of headbutting a brick wall until you make a door.
Having multiple late-game cleaners means that one can act as the insurance plan for another, and with sneasler’s want to take hits you might need one as it might just die trying to proc unburden, but with a supreme overlord on the team a loss is not truly a loss, it’s an endgame.
Outside of using their combined power to break through physically bulky mons, they are able to check eachother’s counters: for instance kingambit can take out opposing gholdengo for a non-night slash or fire punch sneasler, and sneasler can take out opposing dark types (most notably opposing gambit) for its own iron head gambit.

I’d call it a match made in heaven, but that would imply that either of these bastards are actually going to make it up there when their time comes, but I reckon that I don’t need to anyway: you’ve probably played against this core at one point or another, and you’ll probably be seeing it a lot more. Use it while you can, something’s telling me that kingambit isn’t long for this tier.

Teammates
:grimmsnarl: :glimmora: :meowscarada: :samurott-hisui: :sandy shocks:
A lead on ho is the most important slot, and ho has a lot of options. Outside of grimmsnarl, all of these leads are most likely dying after setting up, grabbing momentum and giving gambit an immediate stack on overlord.

:gholdengo:
If you decide to use a hazard lead, balloon ghold is an incredible option for keeping hazards up against damn near everything.

:iron valiant:
An incredible ho pick that can use thunderbolt to put big damage on the bulky waters dondozo and garganacl that sneasler and gambit would otherwise struggle with. Can also use encore as a way to help its teammates make their way in and destiny bond to clear a mon that would otherwise cause trouble for them.

:moltres-galar:
High special bulk and dark typing makes moltres a good mon to use as a switch in to ghost types in order to preserve kingambit’s hp for the endgame, while also being a potent sweeper itself.

:great tusk:
It’s great tusk.

:cresselia: :hatterene:
Bulky stored power sweepers that give the otherwise fragile ho team the ability to take more hits and a better ability to put the hurt on stall, in particular the unaware mon dondozo, which both gambit and sneasler would otherwise struggle with. Cress in particular helps gambit preserve its hp for important threats and the endgame due to its massive bulk.

Enamorus @ Choice Specs
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Fairy
Timid Nature
- Moonblast
- Earth Power
- Mystical Fire
- Healing Wish / Psychic

Enamorus has proven to be one of the strongest special threat thanks to its great movepool and offensive stats. What pair well with it ?

Cinderace @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Libero
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pyro Ball
- U-turn
- Low Kick
- Court Change

this mon can do 3 things for it which are very valuable

- pressure steel types, clodsire, and other pokemon with its pyro ball, and heatran with low kick
- remove hazards to make it so it can switch in more often
- pivot it in to make sure it doesnt have to take in uneccessary hits

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 168 SpD / 88 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Protect / Will-O-Wisp
- Thunder Wave

:rotom-wash: has several nice properties with regard to how it synergizes with :enamorus::
  • It comes in effectively on its only true counters in :moltres: and :blissey: (I expect most teams will have a better :blissey: switch-in), as well as the things that can soft check it by tanking one of its moves (such as :gholdengo:, :slowking-galar:, :heatran:, :zapdos:, :clodsire:—watch out for water absorb—:cinderace:, :corviknight:, :zapdos:, and :volcanion:), thus easing the cost of misprediction with :enamorus:. It also comes in freely on attempts to paralyze :enamorus:.
  • It spreads paralysis which brings absolutely everything bar jolly swift swim :floatzel: and jolly unburden :sneasler: below :enamorus:’s speed tier, and outside of BE :sandy shocks:, BE speed :great tusk:, and the rare :kilowattrel: and :thundurus: there are no para-immunes faster than :enamorus:, so the threat of thunder wave very effectively forces offensive threats out.
  • It pivots :enamorus: in and is slow enough to act as a slow pivot in many 1v1s. :enamorus: can come in relatively safely on many of the mons that :rotom-wash: lets in such as :meowscarada:, :chesnaught:, :amoonguss: (sorta), and :walking wake: (sorta, it’s not hard to imagine that :walking wake: sees going for a dragon move on the :rotom-wash: in front of it as the safer option).
  • :rotom-wash:’s lack of healing outside of leftovers makes it a great candidate for receiving healing wish. :rotom-wash: especially appreciates that if it is tasked with being put under a lot of pressure early, it doesn’t end up burning out before crippling or chipping enough mons to justify its spot; a :rotom-wash: that makes it to mid-to-late game in good health and with intact lefties is generally very annoying to deal with, especially with how much less common rocks have become.

:sv/roaring moon:

Roaring Moon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crunch
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Iron Head

Moon here pairs pretty well with enam- the 2 of them form a nice offensive core, with u turn giving enam a safer switch in. Of course dark + fairy is a great offensive combo between the two of them, as well as moon being a speed control Mon, when they might expect scarves enam. The thing moon helps the most is with :clodsire: and :slowking galar:, both getting ohkoed by EQ ( at least I think they do ). Healing wish helps heal up moon if it's taken too much chip DMG via hazards / resisted moves if needed

There was a tie between Roaring Moon and Rotom-Wash, and Showdown gave the win to Rotom. Gratz !

Congratulations to Whaloob for winning the 2nd Week of SV OU Matchmaking with their :enamorus: Specs Enamorus + defensive Rotom-Wash Core :rotom-wash: !
HoF updated

Please vote next week, it's not that hard :changry:

Week 3 : Specs Hoopa-Unbound
1691068005187.png

Hoopa-Unbound @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magician
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
- Trick

Hoopa-Unbound has the highest Special Attack in the game, so coupled with Choice Specs and it's incredible move, this is for sure one of the most dangerous Pokemon of SV OU. Sadly, its Bulk is not that good, it's too slow to be a real threat, and its horrible typing prevents it from being the best offensive Pokemon in SV OU.

So, who is his bets partner ? :smogthink:

You have until Monday, August 7th to submit your partner !

Moltres @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 244 Def / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Flamethrower
- Will-O-Wisp
- Roost
- U-turn

This Moltres set is an effective partner to Hoopa-U, with defensive synergy as it resists both of Hoopa's weaknesses (Bug and Fairy) and can punish hard Pokemon that try to capitalise on Hoopa's quad U-turn weakness with Flame Body. Although I usually prefer a specially defensive Moltres set, Phys. Def still handles up to Choice Specs Enamorus while dealing better with other threats that may come in to revenge or set up on choice-locked Hoopa-U such as Meowscarada, Cinderace, Landorus-T, SD Valiant, Dragonite, Zamazenta and Kingambit. Will-O-Wisp guarantees beating these physical attackers, Roost provides longevity and U-turn allows for Moltres to pivot out and potentially bring in Hoopa-U on common switch-ins to Moltres such as Slowking-Galar, Heatran, Clodsire and Garganacl, all of which can be hit super effectively by Hoopa's coverage as well as Tricked to permanently invalidate.

:sv/heatran:
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 216 SpD / 40 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Taunt
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock

Heatran to support hoopa, chipping a variety of Mons that check hoopa , so it can finish them off. Magma storm is also great for trapping and removing slowking, who can para it, as well as other special walls that it can trap and kill. Rocks also mean it can pick up some 2hkos instead of 3. It also switches into most attacks that hoopa doesn't want to take ( you can even use flame body if you want to punish u-turners even more) and in general just soaks up attacks that hoopa hates

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock
- Grass Knot

Hoopa-u hates u-turn and lando-t punishes u-turn with its helmet while also setting up rocks for it. A slow u-turn is pretty huge for getting hoopa in and allowing it to fire some shots in.

It also helps vs Kingambit, cinderace, zamazenta, sneasler, etc
