Very helpful against opposing Reuniclus, Clefable, Gliscor, etc. Also can save you a little bit vs Magnezone and some other threats, but the main things are the former

It's just SpDef Ferro, but you run custap to act a really cheesy stop to stuff like swampert, gren, torn, medicham, etc. You can also get another layer of spikes off or run explosion to block defoggers that think they're cool. I've run it a bunch and it's nice against the rain spam that you see all over ladder.

Reserving Chople Berry+HP Fire!

Ferrothorn @ Chople Berry
Sassy Nature
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 8 SpA / 232 SpD
- Spikes/Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed/Thunder Wave
- Hidden Power Fire
- Power Whip/Gyro Ball

This set does one thing and one thing alone: it lures in and eliminates Kartana, which otherwise turns Ferrothorn into a liability. This niche, though small and usually outclassed in other roles by more standard Ferrothorn variants, is still extremely valuable as it allows Ferrothorn to perform another role while not too greatly hampering its ability to check other threats.

A Sassy nature is always run so as not to negatively affect Ferrothorn's Special Attack stat, and 8 Special Attack EVs are run to ensure that Ferrothorn will always OHKO Kartana from full with the aforementioned HP Fire. A Chople Berry is run to ensure that Ferrothorn can survive anything except a +2 All-Out Pummeling from Kartana, and can let it survive other attacks in a pinch including Mega Medicham's High Jump Kick; it still has enough Special Defense to avoid the 3HKO from Specs Greninja's Dark Pulse. The other moves are highly customizable - such is the way of Ferrothorn - from its choice of entry hazard to its choice between Power Whip and Gyro Ball to its choice of Leech Seed for longevity and Thunder Wave to cripple something.

Rocky Helmet Ferrothorn.
Stealth Rock punishs switches and leech seed serves as recovery and chip. Thunder Wave cripples pokemon looking to switch into Ferrothorn. Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet inflicts a lot of damage to physical attackers.

Curse of the Ferrous
Ferrothorn @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 44 Atk / 212 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Curse
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Bulldoze

Z-Curse is a SD, defense boost, and gyro-dmg-increaser, all in one turn.

The attack EVs with the +2 boost, brings its damage to the same as banded ferro 252+,
though of course you can switch moves at the cost of your Z slot.

The speed drop from curse and any increase in gyro dmg is really only relevant for very slow mons, but has situations.
Like easily 2HKO chansey without resorting to Power Miss.
Band 252+ Atk, 40 Spe, Gyro Ball (85 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 241-285 (34.2 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 44 Atk, 26 Spe, Gyro Ball (130 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 369-435 (52.4 - 61.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Band 252+ Atk, 40 Spe, Gyro Ball (98 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def, 0 IV Spe, Cresselia: 135-159 (30.4 - 35.8%) -- 36.9% chance to 3HKO
+2 44 Atk, 26 Spe, Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def, 0 IV Spe, Cresselia: 204-241 (46 - 54.4%) -- 54.3% chance to 2HKO
^ (going from 3hko to 2hko, would be the same vs TR Magearna like TR cress shown)

With the attack EVs, you still get to keep about 84% of the SpDef bulk of the regular set.
But of course not having leftovers significantly decreases Ferro's length of survival.

Lastly:
+2 44 Atk Ferrothorn Bulldoze vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 328-388 (84.9 - 100.5%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
... in case Tran comes in to revenge but fails at Magma Miss ;-)

EVs: 252 HP / 24 Def / 232 SpD
Sassy Nature
-Stealth Rock / Spikes
-Leech Seed
-Power Whip / Knock Off
-Gyro Ball

Standard Ferro, but with Shed Shell over Leftovers so Magnezone and the rare Alolan Golem can’t trap you. Protect isn’t used since there are no Leftovers, so it’s the usual choice of hazards, Leech Seed, and STABs, and maybe Knock Off over one of them if you want.

This set can play much more recklessly around trappers and even be paired with something that can set up on Magnezone’s HP Fire, such as Volcarona.

Assault Vest

Ferrothorn @ Assault Vest
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 3 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Bulldoze
- Explosion

Ferrothorn has a vastly underrated attack stat, which combined with its bulk and solid typing, allow it to run an assault vest set. Most strong fire type moves cook Ferro, but anything else on the special side has a hard time breaking through. Gyro and Power Whip are pretty staple. Bulldoze allows Ferro to hit Heatran on the switch for decent damage. Not to mention this Ferro lives a sp def Heatran's lava plume. Explosion allows Ferro to gain momentum for your team or as a last ditch effort 1 for 1 trade.

A fully specially defensive version of this set can be run to better take on some of the specially offensive threats of the tier, including Ash-Gren and Magearna, but Ferro's ability to punch back is severely lessened without investment.

Also this is a thing

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Ferrothorn: 252-300 (71.7 - 85.4%)
252+ Atk Ferrothorn Bulldoze vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 204-244 (72.3 - 86.5%)

The 3 speed IVs allow Ferrothorn to outspeed Toxapex at -3 from Bulldoze, allowing you to follow up with a potential Boom if they let themselves get whittled.

Pair this mon with wish and spikes support for best results.

Toxic Ferrothorn (the last reservation expired)

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 24 Def / 232 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Toxic
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

General idea
Here we have the set of hazard setter Ferrothorn, but with the addition of Toxic instead of Spikes.
Thanks to Toxic this Ferrothorn can poison a Defog user such as Zapdos (unless prior Substitute) which is waiting for something else.
The combination of Toxic + Leech Seed puts a timer onto the opposite threat.
The dual STAB combination is here in order to avoid being a Taunt-bait and they are able to lure some Toxic-targets on the switch because the combination Grass-Steel is often neutral or even resisted.

Team(mates) support
A way to deal properly with Steels is mandatory, mainly Magnet Pull Magnezone and Heatran.

Sorry about that, glad nameless took over though
Custap by Veez gets my vote, I honestly see Ferro get worn down too much vs like rain so its cool

Chople + HP Fire is so cheesy that I kind of want to vote for it. Custap is also a very nice tech that puts in work often, as is worry seed.

But in practice, my vote would have to go to Shed Shell Custap Berry. Changing my vote after some playtesting on the ladder. Works much better than I initially gave it credit for.

PS: Sorry Dreadfury, I genuinely like the cheese, but Custap just takes the cake for me.

Banned deucer.
Finchs Worry Seed Ferrothorn, since it is able to have a good use against balance and (semi) stall.

It's a tough choice between Veez's custap and Finch's worry seed, but I'd have to go with Finch's worry seed.
I just like how with one move, it's suddenly less passive, while keeping lefties recovery.
Tt can actually mess with common defensive mons that rely on their abilities to maintain bulk.
Too bad it doesn't bypass magic bounce tho, I'd love to make sab worry :(

Ok the voting is over! By its results, the winner of the Cycle 15 is Custap Berry by Veez. Congratulations! Your submission will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. And now let's go straight to the next Cycle!

Cycle Sixteen - Celesteela
:sm/celesteela:

This Cycle's subject will be another defensive Steel-type - Celesteela! Its well-rounded bulk and ability to annoy most switch-ins and wall dangerous threats like Kartana, Tapu Lele, and the uprising Swords Dance Gliscor make it notable defensive presence and great asset for fatter teams. Celesteela generally uses only one set but you guys post here some other hot sets!

Banned Sets

The deadline is Saturday 7th of September. Good luck!

3 Attacks

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Def / 232 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake
- Flamethrower / Fire Blast
- Toxic / Leech Seed

3a Celesteela is an interesting option on Bulky Offense teams, as it provides some decent offensive presence with its generally wide range coverage, slamming the likes of Toxapex and Heatran with a decent sized hit to avoid momentum loss. Toxic is the preferred option here as it continues to let offenses keep momentum against the likes of Pokemon like Rotom-Wash and other bulky Water types that would otherwise deal with this Pokemon with ease. Leech Seed is more preferable if these Pokemon can be punished through other means and health is somewhat of a concern throughout the match.

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Def / 232 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect / Flamethrower
- Heavy Slam / Flamethrower
- Toxic

Are you tired of being forced out every time you see a Zapdos, Rotom-Wash or fat Water not named Pex soaking your attacks? Well fear no longer! Toxic cripples all of these mons by putting them on a timer in tandem with Leech Seed, wearing them down really fast. After the first turn with both Leech and Tox, the opponent will lose 18-24% of its health. Couple this with Protect, and these foes often lose half their health on a mon that they should check. The fact that Toxic damage also remains can be huge in the long game, reducing Cele’s overall passivity in defensive matchups. This set isn’t perfect though—it noticeably loses to SD Kartana/Scizor and can’t do much to Gliscor. Flamethrower can be used over Heavy Slam/Protect to alleviate the former issue while Gliscor will be hard to manage overall. However, keep in mind that losing Heavy Slam also lets Clef be a big threat, while losing Protect can’t let you annoy checks as much

Reserving Autotomize+Groundium Z

Celesteela @ Groundium Z
Adamant Nature
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
- Autotomize
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam
- Fire Blast/Seed Bomb

Autotomize drastically improves Celesteela's matchup against more offensive teams, allowing it to outpace a large portion of the unboosted metagame. It still falls painfully short of some Scarfers, but many cannot OHKO Celesteela in return. One Scarfer it most certainly doesn't fall short of outpacing after a boost, however, is Magnezone; after an Autotomize boost Celesteela can easily outpace Choice Scarf Magnezone, and it will naturally OHKO any Magnezone variant with Earthquake. It similarly preys on the more niche Steel-type trapper, Choice Scarf Alolan Golem.

Earthquake is the distinguishing factor provided by this set, and is the reason why one would ever consider running a physically-offensive Celesteela in the first place. Taking a page from the extremely powerful lure Z-Dig Greninja, Celesteela can equip a Groundium Z to utilize a frighteningly powerful Tectonic Rage that will demolish an unsuspecting Toxapex or Magearna; Shift Gear variants of the latter are OHKOed outright, while standard Toxapex and Assault Vest variants of Magearna have a significant chance to be OHKOed if Stealth Rock is up. Getting a single KO with Celesteela can drastically swing the tide of the game in its user's favor, as with a set with this much offensive investment its Ability is functionally a Moxie (or slightly worse Soul-Heart, in the case of the inevitable Special Autotomize+Z-move sets) and, consequently, it becomes increasingly more difficult to counter or even check.

Heavy Slam is obligatory on most if not all Celesteela variants, be they offensive or defensive. Celesteela is an absolute unit and hits most of the tier with a 120-power STAB coming off of a respectable Attack stat. With this level of investment it is able to irreparably damage max-Defense Clefable; Magic Guard variants are cleanly 2HKOed from full as they are immune to entry hazard damage, while Unaware variants have a 50% chance of being outright OHKOed after Stealth Rock damage.

Seed Bomb 2HKOs Quagsire, which otherwise completely walls this set.

Fire Blast, though an incredibly odd choice for a physical Celesteela variant on paper, should be considered for its ability to always 2HKO Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor outside of Rain. Both can be broken past if Celesteela picks up several Beast Boosts, but no competent opponent should put their team in that much danger. Flamethrower cannot 2HKO Ferrothorn, while Fire Blast is strong enough that Celesteela need not compromise its incredible natural bulk with a Naughty or Lonely nature.

This set fits best on more offensively-inclined teams able to provide consistent entry hazard uptime in need of a powerful setup sweeper that can give itself numerous setup opportunities through a combination of its great natural bulk and the ubiquity of its Defensive sets. The surprise factor of an offensive Celesteela set also gives it some potential use on more balanced/bulky offensive teams as a lategame cleaner that can snowball out of control with a single good prediction.

A Jolly nature might be worth considering alongside Seed Bomb if outpacing Adamant Mega Swampert is a priority. That said, Seed Bomb fails to consistently OHKO it even after Stealth Rock damage (Adamant, however, has a chance to OHKO it from full for what that's worth) while Mega Swampert effortlessly 2HKOs Celesteela in return with a Rain-boosted Waterfall. The loss in power from running a Jolly nature also destroys its chances of OHKOing Toxapex and more bulky Magearna variants after Stealth Rock damage.

0- SpA Celesteela Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Ferrothorn: 204-240 (57.9 - 68.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Celesteela Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 250-296 (82.2 - 97.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery

252+ Atk Celesteela Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 314-370 (86.5 - 101.9%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery (this calc uses Heart Swap as an example as it runs slightly more physical bulk than Assault Vest yet Celesteela still has a non-negligible chance of eliminating it outright).

0- SpA Celesteela Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 244 SpD Scizor-Mega: 244-288 (71.1 - 83.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Celesteela Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 145-171 (36.8 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 320-378 (81.2 - 95.9%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Choice Band

Celesteela @ Choice Band
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
-Heavy Slam
-Earthquake
-Stone Edge
-Superpower / Flame Charge / Explosion

Banded Celesteela is a compromise between its offensive and defensive capabilities. At base 61 speed, Celesteela is pretty damn slow even with an autotomize boost, so this set opts for less speed and more bulk. It naturally outruns Clefable so no extra speed is important, and its HP investment allows it to survive two Psychics from Specs Lele. As a result, it offers a decent amount of defensive utility while being able to hit hard with max attack, Adamant, Band-boosted attacks.

Speaking of which, the moveset is fairly straightforward. STAB Heavy Slam hits all non-resists like a truck, and the rest of its moves target those that resist it. Unfortunately it only gets Acrobatics and Fly as Flying STABs and they aren't viable options. However, Earthquake lures and destroys Heatrans and Magnezones that expect a passive set, as well as Toxapex, while Stone Edge smashes Zapdos, Zard Y, Pelipper, and Gyarados. The last slot is customizable. Superpower mostly hits other Celesteelas and Ferrothorn, Flame Charge is a tech for Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn, and Explosion is just a last-ditch nuke.

This set works best on offense teams that need a Lele check, and appreciate the general utility of Celesteela's bulk and typing as well as it being a capable attacker rather than a passive momentum-sap.
