My Birmingham VGC War Story! 2010

Now not a lot of you guys know me, well probably none actually as I have only created my account literally 5 minutes ago, but VGC is the reason I have created my account. This is so I can get better in order to win next year. Anyway this is my story, I hope you like it!

Before the Tournament
Ok, so it is the day before the tournament and I only had 3 of my pokemon sorted (unprepared I know) so I stayed up till 3am breeding and EV training my final 3 pokemon and then had a nice 2 hour rest before we (me and my Dad).

So there I was on the long train journey from Colchester to Birmingham frantically trying to get my remaining Pokemon up to Level 50 for the tournament, and I almost did, however I fell asleep whilst training and dropped the DS turning it off so I had to retrain on of my pokemon as I had not saved. Lesson: Save Frequently (or go to bed on time). Anyway, this meant I could not train my Cradily in time so I instead had to use the Mamoswine I had used against the Elite Four in my game.

This is the team I built in the few days before the tournament and being new to this form of battling (as well as competitive battle as a whole) I think I did alright for my self. Also as you may have notice I love to give the pokemon on my teams nicknames with a theme, so this teams theme was Greek Deities and Titans.

The tactic was to first send out Snorlax and Salamence. Salamences intimidate helps increase survivability of Snorlax as he belly drums, and I switch out Salamence for Metagross. On the next turn Metagross psychs up whilst Snorlax rests. And then attempt to sweep with bullet punch. If all else fails I switch out Snorlax for Dusknoir and explode with Metagross. Those were the basics of my tactics.

The Queue

Once I had arrived there I was greeted with a massive bunch of people waiting outside in the rain and I quickly got into a conversation with some guys close by (and we became friends and are going to the October Anime/Manga Expo in October together) and my Dad disappeared off somewhere.

During the long wait another boy came up to us and started talking to us... and by talking I really mean talking, we could not get a word in edgeways. But whilst he was spouting off some random things about how he loves scyther and how he kept his machoke from evolving because he does not like things with four arms I quickly trade my pokemon from platinum to heart gold.

Soon enough we were inside and after we registered we were paired up for battle. The Tournament Staff originally asked me if I was friends with the guy with the awful team (of scyther and machoke) to which one of the people I had made friends with quickly interuppted saying he wasn't. It was an easy win for him. Istead I was paired up with another VGC first timer.

Round One

For my first battle I was extremely nervous and my hands were shaking quite badly, and then my Dad came out of nowhere and shouted "Come On Tommy!" (good old Dad, he always knows how to embarrass me).

Anyway, I cannot really remember her team but I know she didn't attack on the first turn and that easily allowed me to set up Metagross and Snorlax and I swept her with those two.

4-0 to me, and only my fisrt time using this team. My Dad let off a massive roar as I put my hand up to say I had won. Two of the friends I had made in the queue went out this round, the only one getting through was the boy who fought the scyther mad boy.

Round Two

This guy looked a lot older than me and, again, I was quite nervous. He opened with an Electrode and Rayquaza and instantly exploded his electrode whilst protecting his Rayquaza. Due the the intimidate though it hardly did any damage; my pokemon had survived and I managed to get belly drum up. He then sent out Mewtwo. So it was Mewtwo and Rayquaza versus my Metagross and Snorlax. Despite getting the belly drum up I knew that psyching up would be useless as Snorlax would die very quickly, instead I exploded and knocked out both his legendaries. He then sent out Electivire against my Salamence and Dusknoir, his ice pucnh hit my Salamence but it did not KO so I killed him with Draco Meteor.

A 2-0 win for me. My other friend got knocked out this round, so I moved on alone.

Round Three

As I waited in the queue for the next stage the man in front turned round and introduce himself saying "We are going to battle next, good luck" He was very friendly, and that helped to calm my nerves a bit.

Went went into battle and he started with Salamence and something else that I cannot remember. He protects with his Salamence whilst his other pokemon went to attack my Salamence with ice beam, instead scoring a not very effective hit on my Metagross. I manage to set up my Metagross with psych up and go for a bullet punch on his Salamence, which he switched out for Dialga (only about a third of its health was taken off). My Snorlax knocks out his other pokemon and he switches out his final pokemon (again I cannot remember what it was).

At this point Snorlax gets knocked out so I explode with Metagross, killing off his two pokemon. Now it is my Salamence and Dusknoir against his Salamence. His Salamence moves first and instantly knocks mine out, but my Dusknoir gets a Will-O-Wisp in. This causes his Salamence to do less damage to me than the burn does to him, so we simply wait it out until he eventually dies.

1-0 a very close match, and a very good game! But now I anm through to the Final 32.

I leave the Finalist's Lounge to go and speak to my Dad, and he jokes about going to the pub to celebrate. At which point Scyther Boy comes up and says "Drinking is a bad thing you know, I never drink and never will. It is epecially important as I am a practitioner of Tai Kwon Do" ...he was a weird one. Anyway, it was not long before we got called back for the next stage.

Round Four

It was this guy, interestingly enough, who told me to come and join this site. I don't remember much about him except that he was called Tim? and that his team was a pain in the bum.

He started of with Hitmontop and Abomasnow, and faked out my snorlax (whilst using blizzard with Abomasnow) completely ruining my strategy. So the next turn I just bullet punched his Abomasnow leaving it with just over half health and my Snorlax died to Hitmontop. I then sent in Salamence and he switch out Hitmontop and Abomasnow for Palkia and Kyogre, my dragon pulse hits his Palkia as it switches in and OHKO's it. He then brings abomasnow back out and takes out my Salamence so I have to bring out Dusknoir. Here I figure that my best bet would be to explode and take out his other two, so Dusknoir can take on Hitmontop, but he predicts this and prtects with Abomasnow whilst switching Kyogre for Hitmontop. I take out Hitmontop but now Dusknoir is left with Kyogre and Abomasnow. Sadly it dies in one hit from a Water Spout.

0-2. It was a good game and we shook hands, I was then escorted out of the playing area.

Top 32 though is not that bad. I like to big it up to my friends tohugh my saying "yeah! I came Top 32 in the Country" which works...until they ask me how many took part. But anyway, for my first time and with a team I had not practised with before I feel I did very well for myself.

Afterwards

After my loss I joined the guys who I waited in the queue with, and Scyther boy asked me for a battle....however he tricked me and told me to set it to 'doubles no restrictions' meaning it was my level 50s vs his level 80s. But I still held my own and knocked out 4 of his before losing.

I also had a battle with the girl who knocked one of my friends out, before getting knocked out in round three. She was next to me in round three as well, but lost it to a guy in a red shirt who made it into the Top 4. The strange thing was she kept battling me multiple times (and lost each time I might add) but I think it was mainly to avoid this scary looking guy who kept pestering her for battles.

After watching the finals (whilst still battling this girl), my Dad told me it was time to go and we got on the train. However it was the wrong train and we ended up in Reading before we realised. But in the end we got safely home, and now I can't wait until next year.

Well guys, thank you for reading this! And if you have any advice to give me then please give it to me.

Yes good job without ubers. I've been doing VGC for about two months, and this site has helped me greatly. Enjoy your stay :)

If my memory serves me correctly, the girl was SP-Eevee, and the incredibly attractive young man in the red shirt was my GEC. :D
Congrats on getting so far, your team doesn't look like it should work on paper but you must've been doing something right to get so far! Well done and see you next year. (:

Thank you very much! Yeah, I was worried that it wouldn't work but I guess it was alright :)

Sp-Eevee? I just know that her name is Mireille, because she added me on facebook :D

And Congrats to you too, I wish you the best of luck at Hawaii!!

She should add Zak (who she lost to).

Nice read, your team is very original and I am happy to see someone with originality getting so far! ^_^

Wow! Thank you very much.

I try to keep my teams original as I don't really like using legendaries hahaha. I don't know why I don't, I have just always been that way.

Ah, I know SP-Eevee. I've battled her before too, she managed to beat my original team, but not the one I took to VGC. I know her as PKAB from Starmen.net though, Earthbound fans for the win.
