Overview
  • Mimikyu is one of the best Pokemon in 1v1.
  • This is due almost exclusively to its ability, Disguise, which reduces the damage of the first hit it takes to 0.
  • Mimikyu's movepool works well with its ability, featuring Swords Dance and Curse, which it can get off "for free" due to Disguise.
  • Mimikyu also has a signature Z move, Let's Snuggle Forever, which has 190 base power, making up for its otherwise lackluster Attack stat.
  • Aside from this, while quite a lot, Mimikyu doesn't have much to offer with moderately low bulk and a middling speed tier.

Mimikium Z+Swords Dance
Mimikyu @ Mimikium Z
Ability: Disguise
EVs: 240 HP / 128 Atk / 96 Def / 44 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Shadow Sneak
- Will-O-Wisp

Moves
  • Swords Dance boosts Mimikyu's Attack by two stages, allowing it to break past bulky Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Zygarde and Primarina.
  • Play Rough is Mimikyu's primary attack, and when paired with Mimikium Z, allows Mimikyu to use the 190 BP Let's Snuggle Forever.
  • Shadow Sneak is useful against Pokemon that outspeed Mimikyu and aren't OHKO'd by Let's Snuggle Forever, granting a bit of chip damage that frequently differentiates winning and losing matches.
  • Will-O-Wisp allows Mimikyu to halve the Attack stat of the opponent while dealing residual damage, which helps it beat Donphan, Golem and Dragonite.
  • Substitute can also beat these Pokemon so long as it is used on an incoming Speed control move (Rock Tomb or Bulldoze) or Z move, but makes these matchups very unreliable. It does, however, come with the benefit of beating Charm users.

Set Details
  • 240 HP with 96 Defense allows Mimikyu to survive Mega Gyarados' +1 Waterfall. It also gives Mimikyu a good likelihood of tanking Mega Charizard X's Flare Blitz.
  • 44 Speed paired with a Jolly nature outspeeds non-Jolly Gyarados.
  • The remaining 128 EVs are dumped into Attack to maximize damage output.
  • Disguise is integral to Mimikyu's success, buying it a free turn.
  • Mimikium Z transforms Play Rough into Let's Snuggle Forever.

Usage Tips
  • Against bulky Pokemon that Mimikyu can't OHKO, such as Mega Gyarados, Zygarde, and Mega Charizard, it should generally use Swords Dance followed by a Let's Snuggle Forever.
  • If Mimikyu can OHKO the opponent with Let's Snuggle Forever + Shadow Sneak, simply KO them.
  • The exception to this rule is against Greninja, who can use HP Steel to beat Mimikyu if it plays like that. Mimikyu should instead use Swords Dance first against Greninja in most situations.
  • Against physical Sturdy Pokemon like Donphan and Golem, Mimikyu should first use Will-O-Wisp, then Swords Dance, and finally seal the deal with Let's Snuggle Forever.
  • Avoid sending Mimikyu against Steel types as it will consistently lose to them.

Team Options
  • As a result of Mimikyu's weakness to Steel types, Fire- and Ground-Type teammates such as Mega Charizard X and Zygarde work well in conjunction with Mimikyu.
  • Mimikyu can also struggle against stall Pokemon, so stallbreakers like Metal Sound Magnezone and Calm Mind Mega Latias pair well with it.
  • Mimikyu can beat a very large variety of bulky offensive Pokemon for its teammates, so it pairs well with glass cannons like Pheromosa, too.

Thunder Wave+Z-Curse
Mimikyu @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Disguise
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Curse
- Protect
- Substitute
- Thunder Wave

Moves
  • Curse cuts Mimikyu's HP, but deals a quarter of the opponent's health every turn. Its Z move, Z-Curse, heals Mimikyu to full health before using Curse.
  • When paired with Protect, Substitute, and Disguise, provided that Mimikyu outspeeds the opponent, Mimikyu can stall out until Curse eventually gets the KO.
  • Thunder Wave paralyzes the opponent, cutting their Speed in half and also giving them a 25% chance to be unable to attack, which allows it to beat many Pokemon that are faster than it when paired with Z-Curse.

Set Details
  • Maximum Speed is necessary as it allows Mimikyu to beat Pokemon slower than it more reliably while 248 HP gives Mimikyu optimum bulk, which admittedly matters only infrequently.
  • Having an odd HP stat is also important as it makes Curse use only just under half of Mimikyu's health, with the same being true for Substitute.
  • Disguise is integral to Mimikyu's success, buying it a free turn.
  • Ghostium Z transforms Curse into Z-Curse.

Usage Tips
  • Against Pokemon slower than Mimikyu, the general discourse is to use Curse followed by alternating between Protect and Substitute, slowly KOing the opponent with Curse damage.
  • Against faster Pokemon, use Thunder Wave first. Then, proceed to use Substitute until Mimikyu is either at 1% or the opponent has been unable to break Mimikyu's Substitute. At this point, use Z-Curse and play normally, alternating between Protect and Substitute. Note that this will work approximately 2/3 times.
  • Certain Pokemon, such as Mega Gyarados and Mega Slowbro, despite being slower than Mimikyu, can beat it via Mold Breaker and recovery, respectively. In order to stand any chance against them, Mimikyu should use Thunder Wave on turn 1 to manage probability.
  • A skillfully timed Rock Tomb or Z move can beat Mimikyu, so if you suspect that your opponent may use one of these, attempt to evade it by using Substitute.

Team Options
  • Taunt users like Tapu Lele and Mega Gyarados can shut down Mimikyu completely, so teammates like Mega Charizard Y and Mega Metagross work well with Mimikyu.
  • Mega Gyarados can make for a very strong teammate as a result of its ability to shut down Pokemon that rely on recovery with Taunt and its ability to take on threatening Ground types like Donphan, Golem, and Garchomp.
  • Kee Berry Mew can assist Mimikyu in a similar fashion, Taunting Taunt users before they can Taunt Mew and breaking problematic attackers like Garchomp and Mega Metagross with Will-O-Wisp.
