Draft Meowscarada

Not open for further replies.
[overview]
Draft order: Round 2

Price range: 16-17 points

Overview: Meowscarada is a great versatile pick that is an excellent enabler for a draft's centerpiece and/or wincons. It has many viable sets, including being a fast pivot with strong STAB U-turn, a late-game cleaner, or serving as support with entry hazards and Taunt. With solid coverage plus its Protean ability, it is great at forcing opposing switches. However, it's relatively frail and struggles to take hits, so it must be brought in safely.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
* Fast pivot: Meowscarada often uses a Choice Band, Choice Scarf, or Heavy-Duty Boots; its base 123 Speed is a great way to outspeed opposing threats and force them out with its powerful STAB attacks—Flower Trick and Knock Off—and Triple Axel. It can use STAB U-turn with Protean to do lots of damage to switch-ins and position your team well.
* Lead entry hazard setter: Meowscarada can be used to set Spikes or Toxic Spikes at the start of the game. This set is often paired with Taunt, some attacking moves such as Knock Off or U-turn, and a Focus Sash.

Common Moves
========
* Primary STAB moves: Flower Trick, Knock Off, Sucker Punch
* Setup moves: Nasty Plot, Hone Claws
* Utility moves: Taunt, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Substitute, Trick
* Coverage: U-turn, Triple Axel, Thunder Punch, Low Kick, Play Rough, Power Gem, Brick Break, Aura Sphere

Niche Moves
========
* Leaf Storm: Leaf Storm is good against defensive walls that Meowscarada struggles breaking through such as Dondozo. Leaf Storm is most often ran on entry hazard setting or support sets, especially against physically bulky hazard removers like Great Tusk.
* Leech Seed: Leech Seed can be used along with fast Substitute to chip down some of Meowscarada's incoming checks. Fast Substitute with Leech Seed recovery allows it to regain most of its health while weakening the opponent, which cannot switch out or else Meowscarada can get a free Substitute up.

Common Items
========
* Heavy-Duty Boots: Heavy-Duty Boots is a great item for a pivot that frequently switches in. Otherwise, opposing entry hazards would quickly wear it down over time.
* Choice Band: Choice Band gives Meowscarada great wallbreaking or late-game sweeping potential, especially with already strong STAB attacks.
* Choice Scarf: Choice Scarf is useful for outspeeding other Choice Scarf Pokemon or setup sweepers such as Booster Energy Iron Valiant or Battle Bond Greninja.
* Focus Sash: Focus Sash is good for lead sets, allowing them to get extra hazards up or deal extra damage.
* Life Orb / Expert Belt / Black Glasses / Miracle Seed: These damage-boosting items are useful for providing additional damage output, especially if you do not want to get Choice-locked into a specific move. It may be better to run Overgrow instead of Protean on these sets to maintain its STAB Grass and Dark.

Niche Items
========
* Protective Pads: Protective Pads is good against Pokemon with Rough Skin, Static, or other contact-related items and abilities, especially when using Triple Axel. Note that Flower Trick does not make contact. The main downside is not being able to utilize other items, especially Heavy-Duty Boots. They both aim to reduce chip damage, so keep in mind which item is more valuable in a given matchup.
* Choice Specs: Meowscarada has a decent special movepool, so Choice Specs can be used in matchups where Meowscarada's strong special STAB moves and coverage are enough to offset its lower Special Attack stat.
* Leftovers: Leftovers is good for passive recovery, especially on Substitute + Leech Seed builds.

Tera
========
Meowscarada does not benefit from utilizing Tera. Other high-price Pokemon can receive much more value with Tera. Its Protean ability allows it to naturally gain STAB damage for any move, and Tera completely negates the ability. If you do choose to make Meowscarada a Tera Captain, it can utilize Tera Grass and Dark to increase STAB damage or Tera Fire for extra coverage.

Draft Strategy
========
Meowscarada is a great, versatile Pokemon, typically drafted to synergize well with a strong round 1 pick such as Great Tusk or Palafin. It can entry hazard stack to enable late-game sweeping, wallbreak, or pivot for better positioning.

* Special wallbreaker: Meowscarada can be an excellent physically offensive wallbreaker, but it can struggle breaking physical walls. Having a special wallbreaker that it can pivot into keeps you in a strong position, and in teambuilding, it forces the opponent to choose what form of defensive EVs they want to run, or it makes them run mixed. Some good pairings include Raging Bolt, Latios, and Iron Moth.
* Ground-types: Having a Ground-type helps Meowscarada with the types it struggles breaking the most, including Poison-, Steel-, and Fire-types. Since Meowscarada can force many switches, it can easily U-turn into the switch-in's counters. Examples include Great Tusk and Ursaluna-B.
* Wincon: Meowscarada is great at helping a wincon do what it needs to do, since it can get them on the field with U-turn, weaken checks with its strong coverage, or even set hazards to enable a sweep. Since Meowscarada isn't reliant on Tera, a solid Tera Captain would be a great option. Examples include Latias, Raging Bolt, and Annihilape.

Checks and Counters
========
* Physically defensive walls: Few Pokemon can comfortably take Meowscarada's hits, but physically bulky Pokemon that can resist its STAB attacks are typically most reliable. Examples include Corviknight, Gouging Fire, and Galarian Weezing.
* U-turn: Any Pokemon with U-turn can easily force Meowscarada out due to its natural 4x weakness and 2x weakness when using Grass- or Dark-type moves. Keep in mind that Meowscarada is one of the fastest Pokemon in the format, however, and will likely U-turn first.
* Contact damage: Since Meowscarada uses U-turn a lot, Rocky Helmet and other forms of contact damage such as Rough Skin can help chip it down. It can easily use Knock Off on Rocky Helmet users, but it should be wary of it regardless.
* Entry hazards: Since Meowscarada often comes in frequently, hazards are a great way to chip it down over time. Many Meowscarada sets will run Heavy-Duty Boots to get around this.
* Priority: Meowscarada's defense struggles to take priority attacks, especially after being chipped from hazards or contact damage. Vacuum Wave and Mach Punch are very threatening, and moves like Bullet Punch and Extreme Speed can do massive damage.

Draft order: Round 2

Price range: 16-17

Overview: Meowscarada is a great versatile pick with many viable options, including as a fast pivot, a cleaner, or as support. With solid coverage, it is great at forcing opposing switches. id add a line on its drawbacks, that its frail and needs to be safely brought in. possibly expand on the support options eg mention that it has hazards and taunt

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
* Fast Pivot: Often used with a Choice Band, Choice Scarf, or Heavy-Duty Boots, its base 123 speed is a great way to outspeed opposing threats and force them out. It can use STAB U-Turns with Protean to do lots of damage to switchins and position your team well. mention that its a strong fasy pivot, due to high bp moves like flower trick and axel. could mention knock but it might get too long
* Lead Hazard Setter: Meowscarada can be used to set Spikes or Toxic Spikes at the start of the game. This set is often paired with Taunt, some attacking moves such as Knock Off or U-Turn, and a Focus Sash.

Common Moves
========
* Primary STAB moves: Flower Trick, Knock Off, Sucker Punch
* Setup moves: Nasty Plot add hone claws
* Utility moves: Taunt, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Leech Seed, Substitute
* Coverage: U-Turn, Triple Axel, Thunder Punch, Low Kick, Play Rough add power gem (volc/moltres) and brick break (vs screens). can also add aura sphere since u mentioned specs

Niche Moves
========
* Leaf Storm: Good against defensive walls that Meowscarada struggles breaking through, such as Dondozo.
* Trick: Can stop setup sweepers and bulky walls in their tracks with a Choice item.
add agility potentially? its an okay cleaner option but obviously makes meow useless till the end game. unsure on this though so am open to discussion. psych up in theory works with a sash but that ones really pushing it

Common Items
========
* Heavy-Duty Boots: Great item for a pivot that frequently switches in. just say that hazards would otherwise wear it down, cant assume common sense perse
* Focus Sash: Good for lead sets, allowing them to get extra hazards up or deal extra damage. ordering thing, id move this below scarf since its definitely less common
* Choice Band: Gives Meowscarada great wallbreaking or late-game sweeping potential, especially with already strong STAB attacks.
* Choice Scarf: Good for outspeeding other Choice Scarf Pokemon or setup sweepers, such as a Booster Energy Iron Valiant or Battle Bond Greninja.
* Life Orb / Expert Belt: Good for additional damage output especially if you do not want to get locked into a specific move. May be better to run Overgrow instead of Protean on these sets to maintain its Grass/Dark STAB. would slash miracle seed and black glasses

Niche Items
========
* Protective Pads: Good against Pokemon with Rough Skin, Static, etc, especially when using Triple Axel. Note that Flower Trick does not make contact. mention the drawback that its forced to now take hazard chip which can be equally detrimental as that puts it in range of priority. both pads and boots aim to stop you taking damage and the trade off should be made clear
* Choice Specs: Meowscarada has decent special coverage, but prefers to have the Flower Trick & Knock Off combo. Choice Specs can be good in some matchups or when using Trick.

Tera
========
Meowscarada does not benefit from utilizing Tera. Other high-tier Pokemon can receive much more value with Tera. mention why it doesnt benefit (protean) and that if someone does tera it mention that their best bets are entirely offensive teras such as grass dark ice etc to help boost its damage

Draft Strategy
========
Meowscarada is a great, versatile Pokemon, typically drafted to synergize well with a strong Round 1 pick. It can hazard stack to enable late-game sweeping, be used as a wallbreaker, or pivot for better positioning. These are good to have with Meowscarada: name the round one picks it works best with, notable ones that come to mind are palafin and tusk

* Special Wallbreaker: Meowscarada can be an excellent physical wallbreaker. Also having a special wallbreaker forces the opponent to choose what form of defensive EVs they want to run, or makes them run mixed. again a bit of connecting the dots, its a great physical wallbreaker but runs into issues with physdef walls, thus youre able to u turn into the special breaker. would list some examples of spc breakers too
* Fighting- and Steel-types: These two types help with the types Meowscarada struggles breaking the most, which include Fighting, Steel, Fairy, and Flying. Since Meowscarada can force many switches, it can easily U-Turn into the switchin's counters. name examples, also so that gp doesnt kill you, its U-turn, might apply elsewhere, havent checked
* Tera Captain: Since Meowscarada should not be a tera captain, it is valuable to draft it with a strong tera abuser that it can pivot into and provide support for. Good examples include Latias, Raging Bolt, or Annihilape. gp thing again, you will get murked for saying abuser

Checks and Counters
========
* Physically Defensive Walls: Few Pokemon can comfortably take Meowscarada's hits, but Fairy-, Steel-, and Flying-type Pokemon are typically the most reliable. name examples, how does meow get around them?
* U-Turn: Any Pokemon with U-Turn can easily force Meowscarada out, due to its 4x weakness, and 2x when using Grass- or Dark-Type moves.
* Choice Scarf: Many Pokemon with average speed can revenge Meowscarada with a choice scarf. mention that they have to be careful to scout for the scarfer as meow is unable to take many hits and thus cannot risk staying in
* Contact Damage: Since Meowscarada will likely U-Turn a lot, Rocky Helmets and other forms of contact damage such as Rough Skin can help chip it down. mention that it can knock off helmets to help mitihate this but that the user should be wary of it nonetheless
* Hazards: Since Meowscarada often comes in frequently, hazards are a great way to chip it down over time. Many Meowscarada sets will run Heavy-Duty Boots to get around this.
mention priority, the cat has negative defence on a good day

Draft order: Round 2

Price range: 16-17

Overview: Meowscarada is a great versatile pick with many viable options, including as a fast pivot, a cleaner, or as support with hazards and Taunt. With solid coverage, it is great at forcing opposing switches. However, it's relatively frail and struggles to take hits, so it must be brought in safely.
Should explicitly mention that Meow is a great enabler for the draft’s centerpiece due to its fast offensive pivot and support capabilities.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
* Fast Pivot: Often used with a Choice Band, Choice Scarf, or Heavy-Duty Boots, its base 123 speed is a great way to outspeed opposing threats and force them out with its powerful STAB attacks (Flower Trick and Knock Off) and Triple Axel. It can use STAB U-turns with Protean to do lots of damage to switchins and position your team well.
* Lead Hazard Setter: Meowscarada can be used to set Spikes or Toxic Spikes at the start of the game. This set is often paired with Taunt, some attacking moves such as Knock Off or U-turn, and a Focus Sash.

Common Moves
========
* Primary STAB moves: Flower Trick, Knock Off, Sucker Punch
* Setup moves: Nasty Plot, Hone Claws
* Utility moves: Taunt, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Leech Seed, Substitute
* Coverage: U-turn, Triple Axel, Thunder Punch, Low Kick, Play Rough, Power Gem, Brick Break, Aura Sphere

Niche Moves
========
* Leaf Storm: Good against defensive walls that Meowscarada struggles breaking through, such as Dondozo.
Should also say that Meow will most often run Leaf Storm on hazard setting sets since it’s better vs Great Tusk and Glimmora which threaten to spin.
* Trick: Can stop setup sweepers and bulky walls in their tracks with a Choice item.
Swap Trick and Leech Seed, since Trick is a lot more common. Explain Leech Seed’s potential for SubSeed sets and how it works well with Meow’s speed tier.

Common Items
========
* Heavy-Duty Boots: Great item for a pivot that frequently switches in. Otherwise, opposing hazards would quickly wear it down upon many switchins.
* Focus Sash: Good for lead sets, allowing them to get extra hazards up or deal extra damage.
* Life Orb / Expert Belt / Black Glasses / Miracle Seed: Good for additional damage output especially if you do not want to get locked into a specific move. May be better to run Overgrow instead of Protean on these sets to maintain its Grass/Dark STAB.

Niche Items
========
* Protective Pads: Good against Pokemon with Rough Skin, Static, etc, especially when using Triple Axel. Note that Flower Trick does not make contact. The main downside is not being able to utilize other items, especially Heavy-Duty Boots. They both aim to reduce chip damage, so keep in mind which item is more valuable in a given matchup.
* Choice Specs: Meowscarada has decent special coverage, but prefers to have the Flower Trick & Knock Off combo. Choice Specs can be good in some matchups or when using Trick.
Explain when Choice Specs would actually be useful. This could be done by discussing how Meow’s pretty decent special movepool has better moves for certain types than its physical sets like Rock/Ghost (Power Gem/Shadow Ball). In some matchups, this may be appealing enough to use its lower Special Attack stat.
* Leftovers: should get a mention for its use on SubSeed sets

Tera
========
Meowscarada does not benefit from utilizing Tera. Other high-tier Pokemon can receive much more value with Tera. Its Protean ability allows it to naturally gain STAB coverage for any move, and Tera completely negates the ability. If you do choose to make Meowscarada a Tera captain, it can utilize Grass and Dark to increase STAB damage, or Ice, Electric, etc as needed coverage.
Meowscarada already has coverage for Ice/Electric so just change to types it doesn’t have like Fire/Dragon

Draft Strategy
========
Meowscarada is a great, versatile Pokemon, typically drafted to synergize well with a strong Round 1 pick, such as Great Tusk and Palafin. It can hazard stack to enable late-game sweeping, be used as a wallbreaker, or pivot for better positioning.

* Special Wallbreaker: Meowscarada can be an excellent physically offensive wallbreaker, but can struggle breaking physical walls. Having a special wallbreaker that it can pivot into keeps you in a strong position, and in teambuilding it forces the opponent to choose what form of defensive EVs they want to run, or makes them run mixed. Some good pairings include Raging Bolt, Latios, and Iron Moth.
* Ground- and Steel-types: These two types help with Pokemon Meowscarada struggles breaking the most, which include Flying-, Steel-, and Fire-types. Since Meowscarada can force many switches, it can easily U-turn into the switchin's counters. Examples include Great Tusk and Gholdengo.
Replace Flying with Poison. Meow doesn’t struggle too much with Flying-types anymore thanks to Triple Axel.
It isn’t clear from this text how Steel-types actually help Meowscarada, and I’m honestly not sure either. If it’s for Fairy-types, why not Poison-types? The Steel-type part needs elaboration, but Grounds are good for Poison/Steel/Fire.

* Tera Captain: Since Meowscarada should not be a tera captain, it is valuable to draft it with a strong Tera captain that it can pivot into and provide support for. Latias, Raging Bolt, and Annihilape can be good options.
Every draft will have a Tera captain, so we could say this about any Pokemon that isn’t Tera reliant. It could be reworked to say that Meow is a great partner for a strong wincon mon like Latias or Raging Bolt, since Meow is great to get them onto the field with U-turn, weaken opponents with its strong coverage, remove items with Knock Off, or even set hazards to enable a sweep. And since Meow isn’t Tera reliant, this wincon mon could easily be a Tera captain.

Checks and Counters
========
* Physically Defensive Walls: Few Pokemon can comfortably take Meowscarada's hits, but physically bulky Pokemon that can resist its STAB attacks are typically most reliable. Examples include Corviknight, Gouging Fire, and Iron Hands.
Bulky Poison-types should be explicitly mentioned since Meowscarada lacks any super effective coverage for them and they resist Flower Trick.
* U-turn: Any Pokemon with U-turn can easily force Meowscarada out, due to its 4x weakness, and 2x when using Grass- or Dark-Type moves.
Should clarify that because Meowscarada is one of the fastest mons in the dex, you either need to be faster than it or be guaranteed to live its attack to actually force it out even if you have U-turn. And if you’re not faster, you have to deal with Meow's U-turn.
* Choice Scarf: Many Pokemon with average speed can revenge Meowscarada with a choice scarf. It is also forced to scout for opposing scarfers due to its frail defenses and inability to risk staying in.
I don’t know if this Choice Scarf section is worth including in general, but it at least shouldn't be listed before the options listed below it. Meow is also scarfed often and is faster than almost every other scarfer, so this won’t work a lot of the time. It’s fine if you quantify it as counterplay to non-scarfed Meow sets, but it should probably be the last bullet point because of it.
* Contact Damage: Since Meowscarada will likely U-turn a lot, Rocky Helmets and other forms of contact damage such as Rough Skin can help chip it down. It can easily use Knock Off on helmet users but it should be wary of it regardless.
* Hazards: Since Meowscarada often comes in frequently, hazards are a great way to chip it down over time. Many Meowscarada sets will run Heavy-Duty Boots to get around this.
* Priority: Meowscarada's defense struggles to take priority attacks, especially after being chipped from hazards or contact damage. Vacuum Wave and Mach Punch are super effective, and moves like Bullet Punch and Extreme Speed can do massive damage even at neutral.
