Draft Hydreigon

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 6 onwards

**Price Range**: 12-13 points

**Overview**: Hydreigon operates as a wallbreaker with an amazing offensive movepool in conjunction with great setup options and strong coverage to bypass its checks. With Levitate, it is immune to Earthquake and Spikes, which can make it a good pivot against Ground-type attacks. Hydreigon also finds success being used for utility, setting up Stealth Rock or disrupting foes via Taunt and Thunder Wave. However, despite its potency as an offensive wallbreaker, it is outclassed by a multitude of Pokemon due to its middling Speed and reliance on Terastallization to compensate for its shortcomings, which means the opportunity to use a higher-tier Tera Captain will not be available.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Revenge Killer**: With a Choice Scarf, Hydreigon is capable of picking off weakened foes and allowing its teammates to clean. Without it, its Speed is easy to take advantage of.

**Wallbreaker**: Hydreigon can use its respectable base Special Attack to be an immediate threat to teams without setup. Thanks to its easily spammable STAB and coverage moves, it can wear down opposing teams, which can be made easier with damage-boosting items. It can also help build momentum by pivoting out with U-turn against checks and other unfavorable matchups.

**Setup Sweeper**: Nasty Plot, combined with Hydreigon’s extensive special movepool, makes Hydreigon a dangerous setup sweeper. However, Nasty Plot sets are still prone to being defeated by revenge killers due to its average Speed, so Dragon Dance sets can allow it to outspeed faster threats while still functioning as a strong sweeper, even possibly baiting in specially defensive Pokemon.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Draco Meteor, Dark Pulse, Dragon Pulse, Crunch, Outrage, Scale Shot, Throat Chop

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot, Dragon Dance

**Utility Moves**: U-turn, Taunt, Roar, Thunder Wave, Stealth Rock, Substitute, Dragon Tail

**Coverage**: Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Heat Wave, Flash Cannon, Earth Power, Surf, Hydro Pump, Focus Blast, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Zen Headbutt, Head Smash, Tera Blast, Dual Wingbeat, Acrobatics

Niche Moves
========
**Endure**: With Salac Berry and Nasty Plot, Hydreigon can use Endure to guarantee a boost to Speed, enabling a potential sweep late-game.

**Fire Spin**: Fire Spin allows Hydreigon to trap potential checks and either set up or utilize Tera to beat them.

**Tailwind**: In matchups where specially offensive Hydreigon must outspeed revenge killers without being Choice locked, it can potentially use Tailwind for short term speed control.

Common Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: With its Speed being average at best, Hydreigon appreciates the boost Choice Scarf provides, using it to either get a big hit off first or pivot out from an unfavorable matchup.

**Damage-boosting Items**: Damage-boosting items such as Life Orb can be incredibly useful for matchups where Hydreigon wants to spam multiple coverage moves without switching. Hydreigon can also use Dragon Fang or Black Glasses to get an additional boost on its STAB moves. At the cost of being locked into a move, it is additionally able to use Choice Specs to maximize its damage output and threaten foes with a boosted Draco Meteor.

Niche Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Despite its immunity to Spikes and Toxic Spikes thanks to Levitate, Hydreigon can still appreciate Heavy-Duty Boots negating any Stealth Rock damage on pivot sets.

**Leftovers**: Extra longevity through passive healing can do a lot for Hydreigon, especially if it's going to be on the battlefield for many turns or is taking on a bulkier role. For sets using Substitute or Nasty Plot, Leftovers provides extra longevity to make them truly thrive.

**Choice Band**: While not its preferred side of offense, Hydreigon can turn the tables on would-be checks like Blissey and other special walls with its high base Attack and respectable physical coverage. However, its lack of physical moves that hit Fairy-types reliably makes this tougher to pull off without using Tera Blast.

**Resistance Berries**: With its good natural bulk, Hydreigon can utilize different types of resistance Berries, such as Haban and Roseli Berry, to catch its counters and hit back with either strong coverage or Thunder Wave.

**Lum Berry**: Hydreigon can be prone to status conditions from various threats. Lum Berry provides a one-time cure to any of these status ailments that could otherwise impede its abilities.

**Assault Vest**: With its respectable bulk, Hydreigon can make use of Assault Vest to survive multiple hits from specially-biased teams.

**Eject Pack**: Hydreigon can use its powerful STAB Draco Meteor as a one-time pivoting move to avoid becoming setup fodder and maintain momentum in a battle. This can be helpful in faster battles in which Hydreigon cannot fit U-turn into its moveset.

Tera
========
Hydreigon can benefit from Terastallization for both offensive and defensive purposes. Defensive Tera types such as Tera Poison and Steel give it a way to beat Fairy-types, which often check it, while not forcing it to worry about Ground-types thanks to Levitate. Tera Fire is another way to remove Hydreigon's Fairy weakness while also granting a boost to its Fire-type coverage to hit Steel-types that would otherwise check it, but this comes at the cost of making it weak to Stealth Rock. Tera Dragon and Dark can help boost its STAB moves while removing some weaknesses. However, it is important to note that while Hydreigon does benefit a good amount from Terastallization, it can often come at the cost of using another, better Tera user, which can often not be worth it.

Draft Strategy
========
Hydreigon is a good complementary piece of an offensive core. While it does have great Special Attack, its average Speed is just not fast enough for it to be the main attraction of an offensive core, and it should be treated as such. Teammates that can reliably pivot and help chip down opposing threats help make Hydreigon's role on the field much easier.

**Bulky Pivots**: Hydreigon appreciates having slower pivots to help it get into battles without taking many hits. Galarian Slowking, Rotom-W, and Uxie all can tank hits and pivot into Hydreigon while offering other utility that it benefits from.

**Fairy-type Checks** Fairy-type Pokemon and attacks are Hydreigon's biggest weaknesses. Strong Steel-types like Scizor, Metagross, and Heatran and grounded Poison-types like Sneasler, Dragalge, or and Iron Moth make solid teammates.

**Entry Hazard Control**: Extra chip damage on foes is always appreciated. In a similar sense, being able to keep entry hazards off its side of the field helps Hydreigon’s longevity. Pokemon like Iron Treads, Excadrill, and Glimmora, which can both set hazards and act as hazard removal, make for useful teammates. Spinblockers like Gholdengo and Skeledirge also help keep hazards on the opponent’s side of the field while having complementary typing with Hydreigon.

**Physical Attackers**: Having teammates that threaten special walls that Hydreigon may have a hard time taking out can help it either clean up matches or wallbreak for another cleaner. Pokemon such as Palafin, Iron Boulder, and Sneasler can put heavy pressure on most special tanks while also providing valuable switch-ins to Hydreigon's checks.

**Speed Control**: It is important to have Pokemon with high base Speed that can revenge kill quicker Pokemon so Hydreigon is not pigeonholed into running Choice Scarf every match to make up for slow teams, as a Choice-locked Hydreigon can give foes free setup opportunities. Examples include Ogerpon, Iron Valiant, and Serperior.

Checks and Counters
========
**Fairy-types**: While Hydreigon does have options for Fairy-type Pokemon, there will often be matchups where it can’t fit Flash Cannon, needs a different type of Tera Blast, or cannot reliably KO the opponent’s Fairy-type. Bulkier Fairy-types like Florges and Sylveon can usually survive a hit, while faster Fairy-types like Enamorus and Iron Valiant can revenge kill with their faster STAB options.

**Faster Pokemon**: Hydreigon’s base Speed leaves a lot to be desired. Even with a Choice Scarf, faster threats such as Iron Valiant, Enamorus, Sneasler, and Walking Wake can consistently come in and revenge kill it. In addition, faster pivots can immediately threaten it with super effective U-turns, dealing key damage while getting a check in with minimal risk.

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Specially defensive Fairy-types, as previously stated, and even bulky Tera Fairy Pokemon can come in on Hydreigon and threaten it fairly easily, while Assault Vest users like Ursaluna-B, Tornadus-T, and Palafin can also deal devastating damage while comfortably taking hits from Hydreigon sets without Choice Specs.

**Draft Order**: Round 6 Onwards

**Price Range**: 12-13 Points

**Overview**: Hydreigon operates as a wallbreaker with an amazing offensive movepool. These offensive sets can be bolstered through the usage of Nasty Plot or Dragon Dance which can allow Hydreigon to pummel through defensive checks; it can potentially be a massive threat in matchups where the opponent lacks a solid answer to its STABs and coverage. With its Levitate Ability, it also provides an immunity to Earthquake and Spikes, which can make it be a good pivot into Ground-type attacks. Hydreigon also finds success in tailoring towards being used for utility, being able to set up Stealth Rock, or disrupting enemies via Taunt and Thunder Wave. However, despite its strong potency as an offensive wallbreaker, Hydreigon is outclassed by a multitude of Pokemon due to its middling speed, and so needs relying on Terastalization to compensate for its shortcomings this with the usage of Tera, which means the opportunity to use a higher-tier Tera Captain will not be available. As well, defensive sets are also not as reliable since Hydreigon's longevity will be decreased over the course of a battle due to not having access to Roost.

Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Hydreigon can use its respectable base Special Attack to be an immediate threat to teams even without setup. Thanks to its easily spammable STAB and coverage moves, Hydreigon can wear down opposing teams which can be bolstered with the usage of a damage-boosting items or Nasty Plot. It can help build momentum by clicking U-turn into checks and other unfavorable matchups. Nasty Plot will also allow wallbreaking Hydreigon's to muscle through defensive checks better as well.

**Setup Sweeper**: Nasty Plot, combined with Hydreigon’s extensive special movepool, makes for a dangerous setup sweeper. However, Nasty Plot sets are still prone to being defeated by revenge killers due to its average Speed, so Dragon Dance sets can allow Hydreigon to outspeed revenge killers faster threats while still functioning as a strong sweeper, being able to even possibly bait in Specially Defensive Pokemon.

**Revenge Killer**: With its Base 98 Speed and a Choice Scarf, Hydreigon is capable of picking off weakened opponents and allowing its teammates to clean games up. Choice Scarf is often appreciated because Hydreigon’s speed is easy to take advantage of otherwise.

**Coverage**: Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Heat Wave, Flash Cannon, Earth Power, Surf, Hydro Pump, Focus Blast, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Zen Headbutt, Head Smash, Tera Blast, Dual Wingbeat, Acrobatics

Niche Moves
========
**Endure**: With a held Salac Berry and Nasty Plot, Hydreigon can use Endure to guarantee a +1 Boost to Speed, enabling a potential sweep in the late game.

**Fire Spin**: Allows Hydreigon to trap potential checks and either set up or utilize Tera to beat it

**Tailwind**: In matchups where you want to utilize a specially offensive Hydreigon without locking it into any moves while having the capability to outspeed revenge killers, Hydreigon can potentially use Tailwind for short term speed control to get off the maximum amount of damage possible against the foe.

Common Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: With its Speed being average at best, Hydreigon appreciates the boost Choice Scarf provides, either using it to get a big hit off first or pivoting out from an unfavorable matchup.

**Damage-Boosting Items**: Damage-boosting items such as Life Orb can be incredibly useful on Hydreigon for matchups where Hydreigon wants to spam multiple coverage moves without switching. Hydreigon can also use a held Dragon Fang or Black Glasses to get an additional boost on its STAB.

**Choice Specs**: Choice Specs is a phenomenal item for Hydreigon, allowing it to muscle through a wide variety of defensive mons thanks to its high special attack and strong coverage.

Niche Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: There are few instances where holding Heavy-Duty Boots is not a good choice. Despite its immunity to Spikes and Toxic Spikes thanks to Levitate, Hydreigon can still appreciate Heavy-Duty Boots to negate any Stealth Rock damage on Pivot sets.

**Leftovers**: Extra longevity through passive healing can do a lot for Hydreigon, especially if it's going to be on the battlefield for many turns or is taking on a bulkier role in a team. For sets using Substitute and/or Nasty Plot, Leftovers provides extra longevity to make those sets truly thrive.

**Choice Band**: While not its preferred side of offense, Hydreigon’s 105 Base Attack stat and respectable physical coverage, Hydreigon can turn the tables on would-be checks like Blissey and other special walls. A lack of physical moves to hit Fairy Types reliably, however, makes this tougher to pull off without using Tera Blast.

**Resistance Berry**: With good natural bulk Hydreigon can utilize different types of resistance berries, such as Haban and Roseli Berry, to catch its counters and either hit back with strong coverage or Thunder Wave.

**Lum Berry**: Hydreigon can be prone to status conditions from various threats. Lum Berry provides a one-time cure to any of these status ailments that could otherwise impede on its abilities in-game.

**Assault Vest**: With its respectable bulk, Hydreigon can make use of Assault Vest to live multiple hits from teams that are more specially-biased.

**Eject Pack**: Hydreigon can use its powerful STAB Draco Meteor as a one-time pivot to avoid becoming setup fodder and maintain momentum in a battle. This can be helpful in faster battles in which Hydreigon cannot fit U-turn into its moveset.

Tera
========
Hydreigon can benefit from Terastalization for both offensive and defensive purposes. Defensive Tera Types such as Poison and Steel gives it a way to beat Fairy types which often check it while not having to worry about Ground-types thanks to Levitate. Tera Fire is another way to remove its Fairy weakness while also granting a boost to Hydreigon’s Fire-type coverage to hit Steel-types that would otherwise check it, but it is at the cost of being weak to Stealth Rock. Tera Dragon and Dark can help boost its STABs while removing some weaknesses. However, it is important to note that while Hydreigon does benefit a good amount from Terastalization, it can often come at the cost of using another Tera user which can be costly and often not worth it.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: There are few instances where holding Heavy-Duty Boots is not a good choice. (filler) Despite its immunity to Spikes and Toxic Spikes thanks to Levitate, Hydreigon can still appreciate Heavy-Duty Boots to negate negating any Stealth Rock damage on Pivot pivot sets.

**Leftovers**: Extra longevity through passive healing can do a lot for Hydreigon, especially if it's going to be on the battlefield for many turns or is taking on a bulkier role in a team. For sets using Substitute and/or or Nasty Plot, Leftovers provides extra longevity to make those sets them truly thrive.

**Choice Band**: While not its preferred side of offense, Hydreigon’s 105 Base Attack stat and respectable physical coverage, Hydreigon can turn the tables on would-be checks like Blissey and other special walls with its high base Attack and respectable physical coverage. A Its lack of physical moves to that hit Fairy Types Fairy-types reliably, however, makes this tougher to pull off without using Tera Blast.

**Resistance Berry Berries**: With its good natural bulk, (AC) Hydreigon can utilize different types of resistance berries Berries, such as Haban and Roseli Berry, to catch its counters and either hit back with either strong coverage or Thunder Wave.

**Lum Berry**: Hydreigon can be prone to status conditions from various threats. Lum Berry provides a one-time cure to any of these status ailments that could otherwise impede on its abilities in-game.

**Assault Vest**: With its respectable bulk, Hydreigon can make use of Assault Vest to live survive multiple hits from specially-biased teams that are more specially-biased.

**Eject Pack**: Hydreigon can use its powerful STAB Draco Meteor as a one-time pivot pivoting move to avoid becoming setup fodder and maintain momentum in a battle. This can be helpful in faster battles in which Hydreigon cannot fit U-turn into its moveset.

Tera
========
Hydreigon can benefit from Terastalization Terastallization for both offensive and defensive purposes. Defensive Tera Types types such as Tera Poison and Steel gives give it a way to beat Fairy-types, (AH, AC) which often check it, (AC) while not having forcing it to worry about Ground-types thanks to Levitate. Tera Fire is another way to remove its Hydreigon's Fairy weakness while also granting a boost to Hydreigon’s its Fire-type coverage to hit Steel-types that would otherwise check it, but it is this comes at the cost of being making it weak to Stealth Rock. Tera Dragon and Dark can help boost its STABs STAB moves while removing some weaknesses. However, it is important to note that while Hydreigon does benefit a good amount from Terastalization Terastallization, it can often come at the cost of using another, better Tera user, (AC) which can be costly and (redundant since you're already saying it comes at this cost) often not be worth it.

Draft Strategy
========
Hydreigon is a good complementary piece of an offensive core. While it does have great Special Attack, its average Speed is just not fast enough for it to be the main attraction of an offensive core, and it should be treated as such. Teammates that can reliably pivot and help chip down opposing threats will also help make Hydreigon's role on the field much easier.

**Bulky Pivots**: Hydreigon appreciates having slower pivots to help it get into battles without taking many hits. Slowking-G Galarian Slowking, Rotom-Wash, and Uxie all can tank hits and pivot into Hydreigon while offering other utility that Hydreigon it benefits from.

**Fairy-Type Fairy-type Checks**: One of Hydreigon's biggest weaknesses is Fairy-type Pokemon and attacks are Hydreigon's biggest weaknesses. Strong Steel-Types Steel-types like Scizor, Metagross, or and Heatran and Grounded grounded Poison-types like Sneasler, Dragalge, or and Iron Moth make solid teammates.

**Entry Hazard Control**: Extra chip damage on opponents foes is always appreciated in a given matchup (contradictory with always). In a similar sense, being able to keep entry hazards off your its side of the field helps Hydreigon’s longevity. Pokemon like Iron Treads, Excadrill, and Glimmora, who which can both set hazards and act as hazard removal, (AC) make for useful teammates for Hydreigon. Spinblockers like Gholdengo and Skeledirge will also help keep hazards on the opponent’s side of the field while having complementary typing with Hydreigon.

**Physical Attackers**: Having teammates that can threaten special walls that Hydreigon may have a hard time taking out can subsequently help Hydreigon it either clean up matches or wallbreak for another cleaner. Pokemon such as Palafin, Iron Boulder, and Sneasler can put heavy pressure on most Special Tanks special tanks while also providing a valuable switch in for Hydreigon switch-ins to Hydreigon's checks.

**Speed Control**: It is important to have Pokemon that have with a high base Speed stat to be able to that can revenge kill quicker Pokemon so Hydreigon is not pigeonholed (RH) into running Choice Scarf every match to make up for slow teams, as Hydreigon locked into one move a Choice-locked Hydreigon can allow for give foes free setup opportunities from the opponent. Examples include Ogerpon, Iron Valiant, (AC) and Serperior.

Checks and Counters
========
**Fairy Types Fairy-types**: While Hydreigon does have options for Fairy-type Pokemon, there will often be matchups where it either can’t fit Flash Cannon, needs a different type of Tera Blast, or straight up cannot reliably KO the opponent’s Fairy-type. Bulkier Fairies Fairy-types like Florges and Sylveon can usually survive a hit, (AC) while faster Fairies Fairy-types like Enamorus-I and Iron Valiant can revenge kill with their faster STAB options.

**Faster Pokemon**: Hydreigon’s Base base Speed can leave leaves a lot to be desired.

**Specially Bulky (RH) Pokemon**: Specially defensive fairy-types Fairy-types, (AC) as previously stated, (AC) and or even Bulky bulky Tera Fairy Pokemon can come in on Hydreigon and threaten it fairly easily, (AC) one way or another while Assault Vest Users users like Ursaluna-BM, Tornadus-T, and Palafin and can also deal devastating damage while comfortably taking hits from Hydreigon sets without Choice Specs.
