Hitmonchan Revamp [QC 0/3]

[OVERVIEW]
  • Hitmonchan is a hazard remover with notable offensive presence and extra utility in Mach Punch
  • Hitmonchan can scare out Stealth Rock users such as Regirock and Alolan Sandslash.
  • Thanks to this, it has good role compression
  • Its decent special bulk allows it to check Pokemon such as Cryogonal and Guzzlord
  • its physical Defense is far more lacking
  • Without Toxic or the right coverage move, Hitmonchan is helpless against spinblockers as well as Pokemon that simply resist its STAB moves
  • Despite being resistant to Stealth Rock, Hitmonchan is vulnerable to all other hazards
[SET]
name: Toxic+Iapapa
move 1: Drain Punch
move 2: Mach Punch
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Rapid Spin
item: Iapapa Berry
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 60 Atk / 68 SpD / 128 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Drain Punch is Hitmonchan's main STAB, hitting Pokemon such as Guzzlord and Alolan Sandslash for super effective damage. It also serves as Hitmonchan's main recovery option.
  • Mach Punch provides a form of priority, allowing Hitmonchan to threaten and revenge kill setup sweepers such as Alolan Raticate, Lycanroc, and Alolan Sandslash under hail.
  • Toxic punishes traditional checks to Hitmonchan, including Oricorio-E, Sableye, and Quagsire.
  • Rapid Spin allows Hitmonchan to remove hazards, which is mandatory for almost every team.
Set Details
========
  • Iron Fist boosts the power of Drain Punch and Mach Punch, allowing it to gain more HP back and revenge kill sweepers better.
  • 128 allows Hitmonchan to outspeed the likes of Aggron and Modest Aurorus and Jellicent.
  • 252 HP EVs allows Hitmonchan to survive Choice Banded Aggron's Head Smash after rocks. 68 EVs in Special Defense along with a Careful nature allows Hitmonchan to avoid being OHKOd by Choice Specs Draco Meteor as well as Devastating Drake from Guzzlord after 1 layer of Spikes.
  • Iapapa Berry gives Hitmonchan emergency recovery that does not depend on doing significant damage
Usage Tips
========
  • Switch Hitmonchan against Pokemon it checks such as Cryogonal and Guzzlord and Rapid Spin as they switch out
  • Use toxic to punish Hitmonchan's normal switchins such as Froslass and Oricorio-E
  • Once the checks are poisoned, you can double switch once they come back in to gain momentum.
  • Due to this set's increased longevity, you get more chances to Rapid Spin
Team Options
========
  • Pokemon such as Froslass, Mesprit, and Metang appreciate Pokemon such as Guzzlord and Eelektross being checked by Hitmonchan while they set hazards to pressure Hitmonchan's checks
  • Pokemon with similar checks as Hitmonchan such as Primeape appreciate them being crippled by Toxic
  • Despite having Toxic, Hitmonchan still benefits from Pursuit trapping from Skuntank to permanently remove psychic and Ghost type checks like Mesprit and Froslass. Hitmonchan can threaten bulky rock and Steel-types like Aggron, Regirock, and Alolan Sandslash in return.
  • Physical blanket checks like Quagsire and Tangela can switch into physical attackers that can threaten to revenge kill Hitmonchan while Hitmonchan can stand up to pokemon that threaten them like Eelektross and Cryogonal.
[SET]
name: Life Orb Attacker
move 1: Drain Punch
move 2: Mach Punch
move 3: Stone Edge / Thunder Punch
move 4: Rapid Spin
item: Life Orb
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Drain Punch serves as Hitmonchan's strongest STAB move, threatening Pokemon like Alolan Sandslash and Regirock while also migating Life Orb recoil
  • Mach Punch allows Hitmonchan to pick off kill weakened Pokemon faster than it. The Life Orb boost allows it to kill its targets easier.
  • Rapid Spin is used solely for hazard removal.
  • Stone Edge hits would-be checks like Oricorio-E, Oricorio-G, and Froslass with super-effective damage.
  • Thunder Punch hits Jellicent and Qwilfish much harder than Stone Edge while still hitting Oricorio-G
Describe what the moves on the set do.

Set Details
========
  • Attack and Speed investment is maximized to give Hitmonchan as much offensive presence as possible.
  • Life Orb alongside an Adamant nature gives Hitmonchan as much braking power as possible while still being able to change moves
  • Iron Fist boosts Hitmonchan's punching moves, allowing it to do more damage with its punching attacks
Usage Tips
========
  • Hitmonchan's Life Orb set is geared towards revenge killing weakened pokemon like Kangaskhan, Lycanroc, and Primeape
  • Pokemon that resist or ignore its fighting STAB, such a Froslass, Jellicent, and Oricorio-E are hit by its coverage.
  • This set requires more caution when removing hazards because of its lower longevity due to Life Orb recoil.
  • Offensive play like double switches and hard predictions are required for this set, as it can have difficulty safely switching in and can be heavily rewarded on getting a free switchin on a Hazard setter or remover, such as Regirock, Cryogonal, or Alolan Sandslash

Team Options
========
  • Due to how many switchins this set can force, Pokemon that can use Spikes such as Froslass and Qwilfish are useful to punish repeated switches and put pressure on offensive teams that rely on one pokemon to cover multiple physical attackers
  • Rocky Helmet Skuntank serves as a effective partner due to its ability to Pursuit trap Mesprit as well as chip it down with its Rocky Helmet
  • Defensive Mesprit can get Hitmonchan safely in via U-turn while Hitmonchan threatens Pokemon that wall/threaten it such as Guzzlord and Alolan Sandslash
  • Eelektross can also get Hitmonchan in safely with Volt Switch while also threatening Pokemon like Froslass and Qwilfish
[SET]
name: Assault Vest
move 1: Drain Punch
move 2: Mach Punch
move 3: Thunder Punch / Stone Edge
move 4: Rapid Spin
item: Assualt Vest
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Adamant
evs: 156 HP / 224 Atk / 128 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Drain Punch is Hitmonchan's closest option to recovery while also serving as a strong STAB.
  • Mach Punch finishes off weakened threats like Kangaskhan, Lycanroc, and Stoutland
  • Thunder Punch allows Hitmonchan to target Pokemon that can prevent it from removing hazards such as Oricorio-G and Jellicent as well as Qwilfish
  • Stone Edge targets Froslass and both Oricorio-E and Oricorio-G.
Set Details
========
  • 156 EVs are used to prevent Modest Omastar's +2 Hydro Vortex from OKHOing Hitmonchan after Stealth Rock damage
  • 128 Speed EVs are used to outspeed threats like Choice Specs Jellicent and Aurorus as well as Jolly Aggron.
  • The rest of the EVs are placed in Attack along with an Adamant nature so Hitmonchan can still have some offensive presence
Usage Tips
========
  • This set is used as a blanket check to special attackers such as Guzzlord, Eelektross, and Omastar
  • However, due to this set;'s unreliable recovery, it is easily chipped and cannot be used to check every special mon, or it will get overwhelmed.
  • It can then attempt to take out or weaken these threats with Drain Punch
  • Double switching can help punish spinblockers switching into Hitmonchan as well as potential checks to Hitmonchan such Mesprit, Froslass, and Victreebel
Team Options
========
  • Defensive Mesprit is a great partner thanks to U-Turn and Healing Wish support while Hitmonchan can take on checks to Mesprit such as Alolan-Sandslash
  • Skuntank can Pursuit trap Mesprit and force the opponent to think twice before they switch out to their spinblocker, giving Hitmoncha extra opportunities to remove hazards.
  • Regirock can handle Flying-Types like Oricorio-E and Dodrio while Hitmonchan can switch into and pressure water-types such Omastar and Ludicolo
  • Specially Offensive pokemon like Victreebel, Eelektross, and Ludicolo can threaten Hitmonchan's physical checks such as Tangela, Quagsire, and Mudsdale.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
  • A Choice Band set can allow Hitmonchan to 2HKO checks like Victreebel and Quagsire with Close Combat as well as give it stronger priority but also locks Hitmonchan into one move, preventing it from switching to said priority
  • Hitmonchan can use Bulk Up to pressure slower and bulkier teams and be more difficult to revenge killed by physical attackers
  • However, this set is outclassed by Gurdurr due to its better bulk and access to Guts and Knock Off
Checks and Counters
===================

**Ghost-types**: Hitmonchan lacks good coverage to damage Ghost-types with the exception of Stone Edge for Oricorio-G and Froslass. However, Froslass can still burn Hitmonchan while Oricorio-G can take out Hitmonchan with flying STAB. Golurk is a huge annoyance as well due it fearing very little from Hitmonchan outside of the rare and mostly unviable Ice Punch. Haunter is immune to both Hitmonchan's STAB as well as Toxic, but takes hefty damage from Stone Edge as well.

**Silvally-Fairy**: Silvally-Fairy resists Hitmonchan's STAB and can take it out with Multi-Attack

**Psychic-types**: Hitmonchan has even fewer ways of dealing with psychic Types due to its weakness to their STAB attacks as well as their lack of weaknesses to its viable coverage, with Mesprit being able to scare Hitmonchan out and keep its Stealth Rock up and Alolan-Raichu being able to revenge kill Hitmonchan with Psyshock.

**Flying-types**: Oricorio-E, Oricorio-G, Dodrio, and Swanna can all take out Hitmonchan with their Flying STAB. However, the threat of Stone Edge prevents them from switching directly into it.

**Poison Types*: Qwilfish resists Hitmonchan's fighting STAB while chipping it down with Rocky Helmet and potential Scald burns. Victreebel cannot switch in on Stone Edge, but can Strength Sap Hitmonchan until it is doing no damage otherwise.

**Physically Bulky Pokemon**: Physically Bulky Pokemon like Quagsire and Gurdurr can setup/Toxic stall Hitmonchan

**Physical Attacks**: Powerful physical attacks such as Mudsdale's Earthquake and Primeape's Close Combat can do incredible damage to Hitmonchan. However, most of these pokemon like Kangaskhan, don't like switching into Hitmonchan's STAB

Hey, I'm sorry that I have to do this but after reviewing this with other QC members, I'll have to QC Reject 1/3 this. The biggest problem I have with this is how lacklustre the information here is. The Moves and Set Details sections are bigger than the Usage Tips and Team Options ones, which worries me and leads me to think that you do not have enough experience to write this. I'll address some of these issues below.

  • Hitmonchan is a hazard remover with notable offensive presence and extra utility in Mach Punch
  • Thanks to this, it has good role compression
  • its physical Defense is far more lacking
And? Why does this give Hitmonchan a niche? While it might seem obvious to more experienced readers, it really isn't that obvious for new readers. When writing, you should make it as clear as possible.

  • Switch Hitmonchan against Pokemon it checks such as Cryogonal and Guzzlord and Rapid Spin as they switch out
  • Use toxic to punish Hitmonchan's normal switchins such as Froslass and Oricorio-E
  • Mach Punch revenge kills setup sweepers such as Omastar and Lycanroc.
Usage tips is one of the most important part of an analysis, and honestly this is pretty bad and doesn't even explain how the Hitmonchan user is supposed to use it. For example, the Mach Punch point looks like something you'd find in Moves, not in Usage tips.

  • Pokemon such as Froslass, Mesprit, and Metang appreciate Guzzlord being checked by Hitmonchan
  • Pokemon with similar checks as Hitmonchan such as Primeape appreciate them being crippled by Toxic
  • Despite having Toxic, Hitmonchan still benefits from Pursuit trappers such as Skuntank.
This is honestly way too specific, which can often confuse newer readers. Also, yes, Hitmonchan does x and y, but do these examples do anything for Hitmonchan in exchange? You could mention that Mesprit can, in exchange, check some physical attackers like Gurdurr for Hitmonchan.

Other ghost-Types such as Sableye and Spiritomb completely wall Hitmonchan.

**Silvally-Fairy**: Silvally-Fairy resists Hitmonchan's STAB and can take it out with Multi-Attack

**Psychic-types**: Hitmonchan has even fewer ways of dealing with psychic Types, with Mesprit being able to scare Hitmonchan out and keep its Stealth Rock up and Alolan-Raichu being able to revenge kill Hitmonchan with Psyshock.

This section is filled with either misleading or lacklustre information. Sableye does not completely wall Hitmonchan, it has to be wary of Toxic and it doesn't appreciate taking a Stone Edge from the Life Orb set. Also, no mention of either Golurk or Haunter? The former is a rocker that can spinblock it for days while the latter is immune to Toxic. Why does Hitmonchan have fewer way to deal with Psychic-types? Can physically Pokemon switch into it without risk? Can these physical bulky Pokemon switch into it? Does it have a way around them?

That's just some of the stuff I noticed. When you're writing, you need to make yourself as clear as possible, as otherwise you can lose some readers. The information here is somewhat fine, but you could expand on the existing information as right now I find myself saying "and?" when reading this. I also mentionned this before but Usage Tips and Team Options are just way too short and considering these are extremely important parts, this is unacceptable. I don't want to discourage you from writing though, you could be a good writer. If you have any questions just let me know on Discord.
