Moves
========
Heart Swap steals the stat boosts of setup sweepers like opposing Magearna, Mega Latias, Tapu Lele, Clefable, and Reuniclus, allowing Magearna to act as a solid check to these Pokemon. Pain Split gives Magearna some much-needed recovery while amassing chip damage on switch-ins like Heatran, opposing Assault Vest Magearna, and Ferrothorn. Volt Switch allows Magearna to generate momentum after it forces out a Pokemon that can't threaten it. Flash Cannon gives Magearna a decently powerful move to threaten the foe after stealing its boosts. In particular, it hits Fairy-types like Mega Mawile, Tapu Lele, and Clefable for good damage. Fleur Cannon is a more powerful alternative that also has some nice synergy with Heart Swap, being able to shift the Special Attack drop to the foe. However, the lower PP and inability to hit Mega Mawile and opposing Magearna make it a more niche option.
Set Details
========
The listed HP and Defense investments allow Magearna to avoid the OHKO from offensive Landorus-T's Earthquake. The remaining EVs are pooled into Special Defense to make the set as sturdy of an answer to Pokemon like offensive Magearna, Mega Alakazam, and Tapu Lele as possible. 136 Speed EVs are an option to allow Magearna to outspeed Mega Mawile; however, the significant drop in Special Defense hurts Magearna's ability to check the Pokemon it should. 6 Speed IVs allow Magearna to underspeed Celesteela so Magearna can absorb Leech Seed or take a hit from it and safely pivot out into a teammate.
Usage Tips
========
Magearna should be used to defensively check the likes of Mega Alakazam, Mega Latias, Tapu Lele, and opposing Magearna. Once these Pokemon are inevitably forced out, Magearna can create momentum by pivoting out with Volt Switch. Be sure to use Pain Split whenever Magearna is weakened so it can continue to keep the aforementioned Pokemon in check. However, this is not a blanket statement—due to Pain Split's nature, you must be cautious when using it. For example, if one of the opponent's Pokemon is also on low HP, you should anticipate them potentially attempting to bring it in on a suspected Pain Split to nullify the effects. Similarly, if the opponent has a Ground-type, it is likely that at some point they will try to block Volt Switch with it, especially if that Ground-type is Gliscor or Excadrill. Again, you should try to predict this and catch them by double switching out or using Pain Split if applicable. Ground-types like Landorus-T and Garchomp can also be punished with Flash Cannon. Spikes can put Magearna in range of attacks it wouldn't otherwise be, so you should attempt to remove them when possible before bringing Magearna in.
Team Options
========
This set can fit on a number of different teams, from bulky offense and balance to even stall teams, due to the important defensive niche it fulfills. This set invites in Heatran, so Pokemon that Magearna can bring in with Volt Switch to take advantage of it like Ash-Greninja, Mega Alakazam, and Garchomp are wonderful teammates. Support from the likes of Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Rotom-W is valuable threefold—they are immune to Ground-type moves, which Magearna struggles with, form a potent pivoting core with Magearna, and can remove Spikes from the field with Defog, which would otherwise severely cut into Magearna's ability to do its job. Pokemon like Zapdos and physically defensive Tangrowth can be used on balance and stall teams as answers to Ground-types, with the former also being able to remove hazards. Strong wallbreakers like Mega Medicham, Tapu Lele, and Mega Charizard X are great partners, as they appreciate Magearna's ability to safely pivot them in via Volt Switch. Magearna has great synergy with bulky Water- and Grass-types like Toxapex, Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Tapu Fini—they all help out with Ash-Greninja, the Water-types can cover Fire-types like Heatran and Volcarona, and the Grass-types help with Ground-types like Landorus-T and Garchomp. Tapu Bulu and Tapu Fini get a special mention, as the former provides Grassy Terrain, giving Magearna extra passive recovery and weakening Earthquake, while the latter can remove Spikes with Defog.
