Gyarados (Substitute + Thunder Wave)

Ive tested this more on a more serious team and its done really well. For example i can easily switch in to scizor and set up a sub. Then render 1/6th of his team useless. Waterfall does decent damage and the paraflinch is there too which is nice. I like it and would want to see it on site. The problem is the subs are easy to break and it can leave u hanging if your 1on 1 against something having you make an awkward switch.

I tested this on the ladder today, not for that long but enough to get a feel for it. It was okay; I liked paralyzing Scarf Rotom-A and it was a good counter to Infernape and Lucario but Substitute really killed me more than it helped. Then I tried a similar set with RestTalk Gyara's EVs and Rest > Substitute. I used Blissey as a cleric and it worked really well as a tank. It would counter something like Infernape and Rest off the damage. Then when Rotom-A comes in you go to Blissey and use Heal Bell to wake Gyara up.

Also, this set should not be compared to Jirachi. This Gyarados should be meant to counter Pokemon, not paraflinch them to death. Substitute however, often prevented me from countering Pokemon as I am forced out often if I don't get the needed hax, just piling up the Stealth Rock damage and what not.

Hmmm.... You guys are playing this set incorrectly, perhaps? I think the idea is to TWave when Gyara comes in the first time, paralyzing its counter, then switching out. On the second time out, you sub and hope to flinch your foe to death.

^ Yes. And if it's something like Skarmory, Hippo, Swampert, etc (someone with Roar.) Roar them out because you're faster. Then watch as the Spikes and SR damage piles up.

It doesn't make sense, you're still using Substitute later on which is why this set has such a drawback. And that strategy outlined (turn1: T-wave | turn2: Sub and 'flinch to death') is not something that you can really expect to do effectively. Gyarados is not Jirachi. On a side note, I've seen some of you saying that this Gyara counters Luke and Ape pretty well, but in real life, by using Substitute you're making Gyarados have less opportunities against said foes, as the 50% of health that you'll have lost after SR and Subs is almost what Adamant Lucario needs to KO Gyarados with EE (+1) -- not mentioning Stone Edge, which is a straight OHKO after SR and a boost.

Anyways, I said I'll test out the set personally, and I'll get back with results in due time. However, I repeat, I'm not sold on this set's effectiveness.

Holy shit, i've been using this set on PO and it wrecks physical attackers so well. I even stall out RD teams with Sub+T-Wave. This thing is very annoying, and is bulky as fuck after an intimidate. Stuff like a ScarfHeracross(lol?)'s CC does barely 20%. But this thing definetly needs Spin Support to work well. After a Sub+SR its down to 50% of its Hp, and its going to be subbing a lot. So Spin is welcome. I recommend Forretress, since it could Spike and Spin. And Gyarados could Paralyze those pesky Rotoms so that they are easier to deal with.

Yeah, unfortunately, this just has too many bells and whistles to really seem effective. Thunder Wave in and of itself is fairly gimmicky (I only approve the other set because I've used it effectively, and even then, it's fairly meh in the metagame right now if your opponent is carrying the wrong "counter"), but then when you add on SR AND Substitute wearing you down, the mediocre coverage from unboosted mono-water, and the iffy EVs, it's just a bridge too far.

Have you even tried the set? With proper team support it's deadly and i wouldn't disapprove it without even trying it. And how are the EVs iffy. They serve a purpose, but if you think you can find a better spread then by all means tell me. Anyways can some other QC people weigh in on this please. I've tested this set out, and what I have to say is that I'm not pleased with the way it happened to work. There were so many battles in which I found myself losing 25-50% of health for the sake of fulfilling with the strategy when it could happen / needed to be, and the outcomes then were not that satisfactory. Gyarados, by using Waterfall as the only attack move, and having such a low Speed stat, can't threaten a lot of things out there. I mean, Gyarados will be only attacking Pokemon such as Infernape, Heatran (both who will never switch in on Gyarados, and if they stay is because Gyarados is being targeted with SE/T-punch or Explosion, respectively), and others such as Gengar, Rotom-A, Lucario... Buth the truth is, that there are several others that have no problems to shut this set down without receiving any direct damage from Gyarados, these Pokemon are: Celebi, Shaymin, Breloom, Roserade, Taunt Gyarados, Milotic, Starmie; where the only thing you can do back is Roar. Even in an scenario in which Gyarados counts on entry hazards support, the level of performance of this set won't necessarily increment. In short, I don't doubt this set can give troubles to a lot of players because it can get to be slightly annoying sometimes, but I don't see it being menace to avid players or teams with some of the components listed up there. Furthermore, in battles in which SS is in play, your only real opportunity of recovering some health gets annulled, which is entirely disheartening when taking into account the moves that you're running and what you plan to do with them.
