[SET COMMENTS]
Empoleon has a wide array of utility moves such as Knock Off, Flip Turn, and Roost that allow it to be a valuable support piece on Steel teams. It acts as a phenomenal special wall, easily shrugging off attacks from potent special attackers such as Flutter Mane, Greninja, Walking Wake, and Hisuian Zoroark. Surf is Empoleon's best way of dealing consistent damage as well as taking care of Fire-type Pokemon such as Talonflame, Iron Moth, and Heatran. Knock Off allows Empoleon to soften up defensive staples such as Toxapex, Slowbro, Galarian Weezing, and Porygon2 and remove Choice items from the aforementioned special attackers. Flip Turn is a great pivoting option that allows Empoleon to provide safe switches for wallbreaking teammates such as Kingambit and Choice Specs Gholdengo. Competitive deters opponents from removing hazards via Defog, as the +2 boost to Surf allows Empoleon to deal huge damage.
Thanks to Competitive deterring Defog and Knock Off to remove Heavy-Duty Boots, Empoleon thrives on Steel teams that rely on entry hazards, so hazard-setting teammates such as Archaludon and Skarmory are great picks. Skarmory and Archaludon are also able to use their incredible Defense stats to stand up to physical attackers that Empoleon is unable to deal with, such as Chien-Pao, Kingambit, Sneasler, and Baxcalibur. Skarmory is also able to switch into Ground-type attacks that would otherwise threaten Empoleon. Kingambit is a powerful teammate for Empoleon, as the entry hazard damage and removal of items from Pokemon like Choice Specs Walking Wake and Greninja and Heavy-Duty Boots from Pokemon like Quagsire and Toxapex make Kingambit's job a lot easier. Empoleon is also capable of switching into Fire-type attacks, Matcha Gotcha from Sinistcha, and Will-O-Wisp from Dragapult, as well as threatening to remove their Leftovers. Gholdengo is a great teammate for Empoleon, as it can safely switch into Fighting-type attacks that threaten Empoleon. Gholdengo can also take advantage of the hazards on the field, as its checks, such as Alolan Muk, Ting-Lu, and Heatran, are weakened by them as they switch in. Iron Treads is able to remove hazards via Rapid Spin, which protects Empoleon in case its Heavy-Duty Boots get removed by Knock Off. Air Balloon Iron Treads is also capable of providing as a Ground immunity, albeit temporarily, and threatening foes like Gliscor and Landorus with a strong Ice Spinner. Excadrill is a strong physical attacker that appreciates Empoleon's ability to grant it safe switches with Flip Turn. Excadrill is able to fire off very powerful attacks like Earthquake and Iron Head, all while the opposing team takes chip damage from entry hazards. Both Iron Treads and Excadrill are able to switch into Electric-type attacks from Pokemon like Zapdos, Thundurus-T, Choice Specs Flutter Mane, and Rotom formes while threatening them back with Ice Spinner, Rock Slide, Iron Head, and Mold Breaker Earthquake, respectively. Corviknight can switch into Ground-type attacks as well and is also capable of attacking Fighting- and Grass-type Pokemon such as Sneasler, Great Tusk, Ogerpon-W, and Meowscarada with STAB-boosted Brave Bird. Empoleon can form a nice core with Heatran to help stop Fire-type Pokemon such as Volcanion, Volcarona, and Ninetales. Air Balloon Heatran is also capable of completely walling the most common Gouging Fire set. Hisuian Goodra is another formidable special wall that forms a nice core with Empoleon, further helping improve the Fire matchup. Its Dragon Tail also forces foes to switch out, thus racking up more hazard damage.
