Draft Blastoise

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 4 onwards

**Price Range**: 10-12 points

**Overview**: Blastoise is typically used as either a defensive entry hazard remover or a Shell Smash sweeper. Its defensive sets use its excellent defensive typing and access to great utility moves such as Rapid Spin and Flip Turn to enable its teammates. The Shell Smash set also makes good use of Blastoise's natural bulk to easily set up and win late-game with strong Water-type STAB moves and a few coverage options. Blastoise can be drafted on a variety of teams due to its ability to fill these roles combined with its relatively low price point. However, it struggles against Water-types, especially when using Shell Smash, and its damage output is very lacking even when boosted.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Defensive Utility**: Blastoise's solid bulk allows it to take hits from a myriad of offensive threats, notably offensive Water- and Fire-types. Rapid Spin gives Blastoise a lot of value as a utility Pokemon. Flip Turn is also excellent because Blastoise can switch in to take a hit then slowly pivot to bring in a more powerful teammate safely. It gets several other solid support moves, including Yawn and Haze, that can disrupt opposing setup sweepers. The main downside is its lack of longevity, since it does not have reliable healing options and can be chipped down over time.

**Shell Smash Sweeper**: Blastoise functions differently from other Shell Smash sweepers in that it has a lot of bulk to set up a Shell Smash but some of the worst offensive stats to take advantage of it. This often means that Blastoise either needs more foes weakened or more Shell Smash uses than other sweepers to win. This set can also utilize Terastallization quite well to overcome its lack of raw damage. In fact, without Terastallization, it is impossible for Blastoise to break through most bulky Water-types.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Surf, Hydro Pump, Wave Crash, Liquidation

**Setup Moves**: Shell Smash

**Utility Moves**: Rapid Spin, Flip Turn, Yawn, Haze, Roar, Rest, Sleep Talk

**Coverage**: Ice Beam, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Crunch, Ice Spinner, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========
**Aqua Jet**: This is a decent option to get a little extra chip damage before Blastoise faints, especially against an expected Sturdy or Focus Sash user. It can also get surprise KOs against low HP foes.

**Iron Defense + Body Press**: Body Press can provide meaningful chip damage on defensive sets and is most often paired with Iron Defense to deal significant damage with a Pokemon that becomes tricky to KO.

**Mirror Coat**: This option can deal a surprising amount of damage, most notably in matchups where a foe such as Rotom-W uses Volt Switch or any other decent special move.

**Water Spout**: Blastoise can do significant damage with Water Spout in the right matchup, which is especially effective with a Choice Scarf or a damage-boosting item.

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: This is a common item for Blastoise, making up for its lack of reliable recovery. This is best in slower-paced matchups where Blastoise acts as a defensive counter to foes.

**Sitrus Berry**: This item also helps Blastoise recover HP, helping more in fast-paced matchups where Blastoise will only switch in a couple of times.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: This item aids Blastoise's Rapid Spin sets, as it has to switch in with entry hazards up to remove them. It also allows Blastoise to pivot safely even if it can't remove hazards right away.

**White Herb**: This is the most common item on Shell Smash sets to mitigate the Defense and Special Defense drops, ensuring Blastoise isn't weak to revenge killers with priority moves.

Niche Items
========
**Choice Items**: Using Water Spout while holding a Choice Scarf is an interesting strategy against teams with middling switch-ins to Water-type moves. Choice Specs can accomplish a similar goal, netting more KOs but requiring better positioning or slower foes.

**Rocky Helmet**: Free chip damage on physical attackers can be crucial in certain matchups, allowing teammates to secure revenge kills or even sweep later in the match.

**Mystic Water**: This can occasionally be a good item on Shell Smash sets to KO foes that would otherwise hang on with low HP.

**Lum Berry / Mental Herb**: These are additional options for a Shell Smash set to get past obstacles such as Thunder Wave and Encore, respectively.

**Chesto Berry**: This can be a useful choice on Blastoise alongside Rest. It removes the need for Sleep Talk and preserves momentum by expediting sleep turns.

Tera
========
Blastoise is a solid option as a secondary Tera Captain. Tera Grass and Electric give it the coverage needed to hit bulky Water-types on Shell Smash sets. In matchups where Shell Smash is not as good, Blastoise can also opt for defensive Tera types like Tera Steel and Fairy to more effectively remove entry hazards and disrupt foes, and its bulk allows it to effectively check most Pokemon by using Tera. Tera Water can also be used in niche scenarios to deal more damage with STAB moves, especially if Blastoise uses Water Spout. However, Blastoise can function well defensively without Terastallization, and many high-price Pokemon can utilize Tera more effectively, so it doesn't always need it.

Draft Strategy
========
Blastoise fits onto a variety of drafts, though it is not a Pokemon that should be drafted around. It is typically drafted for its defensive and utility roles, and its Shell Smash sets can also work if the matchup is good. It should not be expected to carry a draft offensively. The options below are good to consider, but at the end of the day, Blastoise is very flexible and typically supports a team more than the team will support it back.

**Fast Wallbreakers**: Blastoise's ability to switch in and then pivot out with Flip Turn allows a lot of powerful offensive Pokemon to attack more without worrying about being KOed on the switch in. Some examples include Sneasler, Chi-Yu, Latios, Darkrai, Urshifu-S, and Kyurem.

**Defensive Synergy**: It can often be good to form a defensive core using Blastoise and other teammates that complement its typing. Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Galarian Slowking, Archaludon, and Sinistcha pair nicely with Blastoise.

**Entry Hazard Setting**: Entry hazards can accrue meaningful chip damage for a late-game Shell Smash sweep. Also, Blastoise's proficiency as a spinner allows it to control the hazard game to support other teammates. A few notable hazard setters include Garchomp, Landorus-T, Ting-Lu, and Mew.

Checks and Counters
========
**Disruption**: Opponents will frequently bring responses to Shell Smash Blastoise to prevent a sweep. This can include priority moves to revenge kill, status effects such as paralysis to cut its Speed, and Mirror Herb to copy its boosts. Pokemon such as Comfey, Raging Bolt, and Rillaboom can use strong priority moves to KO a low HP Blastoise even after a Shell Smash. Also, Pokemon with Prankster can use priority status moves such as Thunder Wave and Encore to stop a Blastoise sweep. Blastoise can sometimes avoid disruption with various items such as Lum Berry and Mental Herb, though its user needs to correctly predict and prepare for the disruption to accomplish this.

**Defensive Water-types**: These can often counter Shell Smash Blastoise if it does not have access to Terastallization. Using Tera to hit these Pokemon super effectively helps remove them. If Blastoise is using a defensive set, Water-types can often create a stalemate unless they have super effective coverage or the ability to inflict status effects reliably, in which case a teammate may need to break through them.

**Powerful Grass- and Electric-types**: Blastoise has excellent bulk, but a super effective STAB hit from a powerful Grass- or Electric-type can do significant damage to it and threaten its defensive sets effectively. Pokemon such as Zarude, Meowscarada, and Raging Bolt can check Blastoise well. In these situations, Blastoise should just use Flip Turn to pivot out to a check.

Common Roles
========
**Utility**: Blastoise is a great defensive water and hazard remover. Its Blastoise's solid bulk allows it to take hits from a myriad of offensive threats, including Palafin, Quaquaval, Greninja, Gouging Fire, and Infernape offensive Water- and Fire-types. Rapid Spin is an essential move in Draft, giving Blastoise a lot of value gives Blastoise lots of value, especially since Water is not a common type that can utilize the move. Flip turn is also excellent because Blastoise can switch in to take a hit, then slowly flip turn pivot to bring in a more powerful teammate safely. It gets several other solid support moves, including Yawn and Haze, which help prevent opponents from setups sweeping against a more passive move set that can disrupt opposing setup sweepers. The main downside is its lack of longevity, since it does not have reliable healing options and can be chipped down over time. mainly just reorganized the paragraph & reworded some parts, i know it looks like a lot

**Shell Smash Sweeper**: Blastoise functions differently from other Shell Smash Sweepers in that it has a lot of bulk to set up a Shell Smash, but some of the worst offensive stats to take advantage of it. This often means that Blastoise either needs more opponents weakened or more Shell Smash uses in order to win, or the user needs to be brave enough to click Shell Smash a second time. This set can also utilize Terastallization quite well to overcome the lack of raw damage. In fact, without Terastallization, it is impossible for Blastoise to break through many most bulky water types such as Rotom-Wash, Vaporeon, and Milotic.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Surf, Hydro Pump, Wave Crash, Liquidation I'd say flip turn should be moved here

**Setup Moves**: Shell Smash, Iron Defense I'd move ID to niche along with body press

**Utility Moves**: Rapid Spin, Flip Turn, Yawn, Haze, Roar

**Coverage**: Ice Beam, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Flash Cannon, Earthquake, Rock Slide Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse, Crunch, Ice Spinner, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========
**Aqua Jet**: This is a decent option if no other moves feel necessary to get a little extra chip damage before Blastoise faints, especially against an expected Sturdy or Focus Sash user. It can also take surprise KOs against low HP foes.

**Body Press**: This move can provide meaningful chip damage on defensive sets, and is most often paired with Iron Defense for significant damage on a Pokemon that becomes tricky to KO.

**Rest**: This is a great option on defensive sets to recover health and remove statuses, notably Poison. This move is most useful on RestTalk sets or when Blastoise is holding a Chesto Berry, as burning the sleep turns can allow many opponents to set up or take crucial KOs with the free turns. move to common utility

**Mirror Coat**: This option can deal a surprising amount of damage, most notably in matchups where an opponent such as Rotom-Wash uses Volt Switch or any other decent special move expecting to deal good damage with little drawback.

**Water Spout**: Blastoise can do significant damage with Water Spout in the right matchup, especially with a Choice Scarf or a boosting item.

Add whirlpool
Maybe add endure? probably good for worst case scenarios to fast rapid spin / haze

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: This is a common item pick for Blastoise, making up for its lack of reliable recovery. This is best in slower paced matchups where Blastoise acts as a defensive counter to the opponent.

**Sitrus Berry**: This item also helps Blastoise recover HP, helping more in faster paced matchups where it will only switch in a couple of times.

**Heavy Duty Boots**: This item aids Blastoise's Rapid Spin sets, as it has to switch in with hazards up to remove them. It also allows Blastoise to pivot safely even if it can't remove hazards right away.

**White Herb**: This is the most common item on Shell Smash sets to mitigate the Defense and Special Defense drops, especially so that it isn't weaker to priority revenge killers.

Niche Items
========
**Choice Items**: Using Water Spout while holding a Choice Scarf is an interesting strategy against teams with middling switch ins to Water type moves. Choice Specs can accomplish a similar goal, netting more KOs but requiring better positioning or slower opponents.

**Rocky Helmet**: Free chip damage on physical attackers can be crucial in certain matchups, allowing teammates to secure revenge KOs or even sweep later in the match.

**Mystic Water**: This can occasionally be a good bring on Shell Smash sets to KO opponents that would otherwise hang on with low HP.

**Lum Berry/Mental Herb**: These are additional options for a Shell Smash set to get past options such as Thunder Wave and Encore, respectively.

Add Chesto Berry

Tera
========
Blastoise is a decent solid option as a secondary Tera captain. Terastallization Grass and Electric allows it gives it coverage needed to hit bulky Water types for Super Effective damage on Shell Smash sets, and its bulk allows it to serve as a resist to anything using the Tera. In matchups where Shell Smash is not as good, it can also opt for defensive typings like Tera Steel or Fairy to more effectively remove entry hazards and disrupt foes. Tera Water can also be used in niche scenarios to deal more STAB damage, especially if it uses Water Spout. However, it's not the best Tera captain out there, so if a more valuable teammate needs it, Blastoise can function well defensively without Terastallization. The drawback of non-Tera Blastoise is that its Shell Smash sets will be hindered in some matchups.

Draft Strategy
========
Blastoise fits onto a variety of drafts. It is not a Pokemon that needs to though it is not a Pokemon that should be drafted around. It is typically drafted for its defensive/utility role, and the Shell Smash sets can work if the matchup is good. It should not be expected to carry a draft offensively. The options below are good to consider, but at the end of the day Blastoise is very splashable and typically supports a team more than the team will support it back.

**Glass Cannon Sweepers**: Blastoise's ability to switch in then Flip Turn out allows a lot of fast, yet frail, sweepers to attack more without worrying about being KO'd on the switchin. Pokemon such as Sneasler, Chi-Yu, Latios, and Darkrai work well here.

**Wallbreakers**: Blastoise's ability to flip turn and enable its teammates also extends to powerful Wallbreakers. Pokemon such as Chi-Yu, Gouging Fire, Urshifu-Single Strike, and Kyurem can attack more with Blastoise to facilitate their offense. this feels like the same thing as glass cannon sweepers, I'd just combine the two and say like "fast wallbreakers"

**Defensive Synergy**: It can often be good form a defensive core using Blastoise and other teammates that complement its typing. Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Slowking-Galar, Archaludon, and Sinischa pair nicely with Blastoise.

Add entry hazard setting - chip damage is good for shell smash matchups or it can pivot to force switches

Checks and Counters
========
**Defensive Water Types**: These can often counter Shell Smash Blastoise if it does not have access to Terastallization. Using Tera to hit these Pokemon Super Effectively eliminates these Pokemon as counters. If Blastoise is a defensive set, this can often be a stalemate unless the opponent has Super Effective coverage or the ability to inflict status ailments reliably, in which case a teammate may need to break through the Defensive Water Type.

**Powerful Grass and Electric types**: Blastoise has excellent bulk, but a Super Effective STAB hit from a powerful Grass or Electric type can do significant damage to Blastoise and threaten its defensive sets effectively. Pokemon such as Zarude, Meowscarada, and Raging Bolt can check Blastoise well. In these situations, Blastoise should just Flip Turn out to a check.

**Priority**: On a Shell Smash set, Blastoise may be revenge KO'd by priority moves against certain teams. Pokemon such as Comfey, Raging Bolt, and Rillaboom can use strong priority moves to KO a low HP Blastoise even after a Shell Smash. Terastallization can be used to mitigate this weakness, but may leave the user vulnerable to other priority moves depending on the type.

Add Status - especially paralysis & poison
Add Mirror Herb - yes seriously. It's literally always run on teams that don't have reliable shell smash answers

qc 1/2 - rewrote a few sections & left some notes, lmk if you have questions about any of it
I agree with pretty much everything and will implement shortly. I just had a couple comments/questions:
-I think whirlpool is too niche. stoise doesn't have great tools to capitalize on trapping the opponent.
-endure i'm on the fence about including. I can add it because it's a decent option it just feels like a lot of pokemon can do more with strategies like this.
-I may combine prio/status/herb in some way as just a "responses to shell smash" type section, since all three have a common goal in stopping a shell smash sweep. I just don't want it to be too overwhelming so let me know how you'd like me to handle that.
-In the tera section, I wanted to note that you wouldn't 100% tera it, as you can still just draft it for its defensive properties + occasional teraless shell smash. I didn't want to give off the impression that you had to tera it because I don't believe that's true. Let me know if that's ok.

**Draft Order**: Round 4 onwards

However, it struggles against Water-types, especially with Shell Smash, and its damage output is very lacking even when boosted.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Defensive Utility**: Blastoise's solid bulk allows it to take hits from a myriad of offensive threats, notably offensive Water- and Fire-types. Rapid Spin gives Blastoise a lot of value as a utility pokemon Pokemon. Flip turn Turn is also excellent because Blastoise can switch in to take a hit, then slowly pivot to bring in a more powerful teammate safely. It gets several other solid support moves, including Yawn and Haze, that can disrupt opposing setup sweepers. The main downside is its lack of longevity, since it does not have reliable healing options and can be chipped down over time.

**Shell Smash Sweeper**: Blastoise functions differently from other Shell Smash Sweepers in that it has a lot of bulk to set up a Shell Smash, but some of the worst offensive stats to take advantage of it. This often means that Blastoise either needs more opponents weakened or more Shell Smash uses in order to win. This set can also utilize Terastallization quite well to overcome the lack of raw damage. In fact, without Terastallization, it is impossible for Blastoise to break through most bulky water types.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Surf, Hydro Pump, Wave Crash, Liquidation, Flip Turn

**Setup Moves**: Shell Smash

**Utility Moves**: Rapid Spin, Yawn, Haze, Roar, Rest, Sleep Talk, Flip Turn ik techno said to move it but it should go here as primary stab is for like the main damage buttons

**Coverage**: Ice Beam, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse, Earthquake, Rock Slide Crunch, Ice Spinner, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========
**Aqua Jet**: This is a decent option to get a little extra chip damage before Blastoise faints, especially against an expected Sturdy or Focus Sash user. It can also take surprise KOs against low HP foes.

**Iron Defense + Body Press**: Body Press can provide meaningful chip damage on defensive sets, and is most often paired with Iron Defense for significant damage on a Pokemon that becomes tricky to KO.

Common Items
========

Niche Items
========

**Lum Berry/Mental Herb Lum Berry / Mental Herb**: These are additional options for a Shell Smash set to get past options such as Thunder Wave and Encore, respectively.

**Chesto Berry**: This can be a useful choice on a Rest Blastoise. It removes the need for Sleep Talk and preserves momentum by expediting the two sleep turns from Rest.

Tera
========
Blastoise is a solid option as a secondary Tera captain. Tera Grass and Electric give it coverage needed to hit bulky Water types on Shell Smash sets, and its bulk allows it to serve as a resist to anything using Tera. In matchups where Shell Smash is not as good, it can also opt for defensive typings like Tera Steel or Fairy to more effectively remove entry hazards and disrupt foes. Tera Water can also be used in niche scenarios to deal more STAB damage, especially if it uses Water Spout. However, Blastoise can function well defensively without Terastallization, and many high price Pokemon can utilize Tera more effectively, so it doesn't always need Tera.

Draft Strategy
========
Blastoise fits onto a variety of drafts, though it is not a Pokemon that should be drafted around. It is typically drafted for its defensive/utility role, and the Shell Smash sets can work if the matchup is good. It should not be expected to carry a draft offensively. The options below are good to consider, but at the end of the day Blastoise is very splashable and typically supports a team more than the team will support it back.

**Fast Wallbreakers**: Blastoise's ability to switch in then Flip Turn out allows a lot of powerful offensive Pokemon to attack more without worrying about being KO'd on the switchin. Some examples include Sneasler, Chi-Yu, Latios, Darkrai, Urshifu-Single Strike and Kyurem.

**Defensive Synergy**: It can often be good form a defensive core using Blastoise and other teammates that complement its typing. Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Slowking-Galar, Archaludon, and Sinischa pair nicely with Blastoise.

**Entry Hazard Setting**: Entry hazards can accrue meaningful chip damage for a late game Shell Smash sweep. Also, Blastoise's proficiency as a Rapid Spinner allows the user to control the hazard game to support other teammates. A few notable hazard setters include Garchomp, Landorus-T, Ting Lu, and Mew.

Checks and Counters
========
**Defensive Water Types**: These can often counter Shell Smash Blastoise if it does not have access to Terastallization. Using Tera to hit these Pokemon Super Effectively super effectively helps to remove these checks eliminates these Pokemon as counters. If Blastoise is a defensive set, this can often be a stalemate unless the opponent has Super Effective super effective coverage or the ability to inflict status ailments reliably, in which case a teammate may need to break through the Defensive Water Type.

**Powerful Grass and Electric types**: Blastoise has excellent bulk, but a Super Effective super effective STAB hit from a powerful Grass or Electric type can do significant damage to Blastoise and threaten its defensive sets effectively. Pokemon such as Zarude, Meowscarada, and Raging Bolt can check Blastoise well. In these situations, Blastoise should just Flip Turn out to a check.

**Disruption against Shell Smash**: Opponents will frequently bring responses to Shell Smash Blastoise to prevent a sweep. This can include priority moves to revenge KO, status such as Paralysis to cut its speed, and Mirror Herb to copy the boosts. Pokemon such as Comfey, Raging Bolt, and Rillaboom can use strong priority moves to KO a low HP Blastoise even after a Shell Smash. Also, Pokemon with the ability Prankster can use priority status moves such as Thunder Wave and Encore to stop a Blastoise sweep. Blastoise can sometimes surpass these disruptions with various items such as Lum Berry and Mental Herb, though it needs to correctly predict the disruption in prep to accomplish this. imo put this one top of this section

qc 2/2 looking gooooodo

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 4 onwards

**Price Range**: 10-12 Points

**Overview**: Blastoise is typically used as either a defensive hazard remover or as a Shell Smash sweeper. Its defensive sets use its excellent defensive typing and access to great utility such as Rapid Spin and Flip Turn to enable its teammates. The Shell Smash set also makes good use of Blastoise's natural bulk to easily set up and win late game, with strong Water STAB moves and a few coverage options. Blastoise can be drafted on a variety of teams due to its ability to fill these roles with its relatively low price point as a reliable Rapid Spinner. However, it struggles against Water-types, especially with Shell Smash, and its damage output is very lacking even when boosted.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========

========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Surf, Hydro Pump, Wave Crash, Liquidation, Flip Turn

**Setup Moves**: Shell Smash

**Utility Moves**: Rapid Spin, Yawn, Haze, Roar, Rest, Sleep Talk, Flip Turn ik techno said to move it but it should go here as primary stab is for like the main damage buttons

**Coverage**: Ice Beam, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse, Earthquake, Rock Slide Crunch, Ice Spinner, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========

Common Items
========

Niche Items
========

Tera
========

========

However, it struggles against Water-types, especially with when using Shell Smash, and its damage output is very lacking even when boosted.

This often means that Blastoise either needs more opponents foes weakened or more Shell Smash uses in order than other sweepers (want to fill out the comparison) to win. **Setup Moves**: Shell Smash

**Utility Moves**: Rapid Spin, Flip Turn, Yawn, Haze, Roar, Rest, Sleep Talk

**Coverage**: Ice Beam, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse, Earthquake, Rock Slide, (AC) Crunch, Ice Spinner, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========
**Aqua Jet**: This is a decent option to get a little extra chip damage before Blastoise faints, especially against an expected Sturdy or Focus Sash user. It can also take get surprise KOs against low HP foes.

**Iron Defense + Body Press**: Body Press can provide meaningful chip damage on defensive sets (RC) and is most often paired with Iron Defense for to deal significant damage on with (clarity, some people use "damage on" to mean "damage dealt to") a Pokemon that becomes tricky to KO.

**Mirror Coat**: This option can deal a surprising amount of damage, most notably in matchups where an opponent a foe such as Rotom-Wash uses Volt Switch or any other decent special move expecting to deal good damage with little drawback (doesn't really add anything and makes the sentence awk).

**Water Spout**: Blastoise can do significant damage with Water Spout in the right matchup, which is especially effective (reducing confusion since Choice Scarf doesn't impact damage) with a Choice Scarf or a damage-boosting item.

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: This is a common item pick for Blastoise, making up for its lack of reliable recovery. This is best in slower-paced (AH) matchups where Blastoise acts as a defensive counter to the opponent foes.

**Sitrus Berry**: This item also helps Blastoise recover HP, helping more in faster-paced (AH) matchups where it Blastoise will only switch in a couple of times.

**White Herb**: This is the most common item on Shell Smash sets to mitigate the Defense and Special Defense drops, (removed bold formatting on comma) especially so that it ensuring Blastoise (especially doesn't make sense here and so is incorrect with the comma) isn't weaker weak to priority revenge killers with priority moves.

Niche Items
========
**Choice Items**: Using Water Spout while holding a Choice Scarf is an interesting strategy against teams with middling switch-ins (AH) to Water-type (AH) moves. Choice Specs can accomplish a similar goal, netting more KOs but requiring better positioning or slower opponents foes.

**Rocky Helmet**: Free chip damage on physical attackers can be crucial in certain matchups, allowing teammates to secure revenge KOs kills or even sweep later in the match.

**Mystic Water**: This can occasionally be a good bring item on Shell Smash sets to KO opponents foes that would otherwise hang on with low HP.

**Lum Berry / Mental Herb**: These are additional options for a Shell Smash set to get past options obstacles (avoiding repetition of options) such as Thunder Wave and Encore, respectively.

**Chesto Berry**: This can be a useful choice on a Rest Blastoise alongside Rest. It removes the need for Sleep Talk and preserves momentum by expediting the two sleep turns from Rest (circle back).

Tera
========
Blastoise is a solid option as a secondary Tera captain Captain. Tera Grass and Electric give it the coverage needed to hit bulky Water-types (AH) on Shell Smash sets, and its bulk allows it to serve as a resist to anything using Tera. In matchups where Shell Smash is not as good, it Blastoise can also opt for defensive typings Tera types like Tera Steel or and Fairy to more effectively remove entry hazards and disrupt foes, and its bulk allows it to effectively check anything by using Tera (moving this clause to the end of this sentence- talking about Blastoise checking things with its resistances in a defensive role, so doesn't make sense alongside discussion of coverage). Tera Water can also be used in niche scenarios to deal more STAB damage with STAB moves, especially if it Blastoise uses Water Spout. However, Blastoise can function well defensively without Terastallization, and many high-price (AH) Pokemon can utilize Tera more effectively, so it doesn't always need Tera it.

Draft Strategy
========
Blastoise fits onto a variety of drafts, though it is not a Pokemon that should be drafted around. It is typically drafted for its defensive/utility role defensive and utility roles, and the its Shell Smash sets can also work if the matchup is good. It should not be expected to carry a draft offensively. The options below are good to consider, but at the end of the day, (AC) Blastoise is very splashable flexible (splashable is specifically banned) and typically supports a team more than the team will support it back.

**Fast Wallbreakers**: Blastoise's ability to switch in then Flip Turn out and then pivot out with Flip Turn allows a lot of powerful offensive Pokemon to attack more without worrying about being KO'd KOed on the switchin switch in. Some examples include Sneasler, Chi-Yu, Latios, Darkrai, Urshifu-Single Strike Urshifu-S, (AC) and Kyurem.

**Defensive Synergy**: It can often be good to form a defensive core using Blastoise and other teammates that complement its typing. Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Slowking-Galar Galarian Slowking, Archaludon, and Sinischa Sinistcha pair nicely with Blastoise.

**Entry Hazard Setting**: Entry hazards can accrue meaningful chip damage for a late-game (AH) Shell Smash sweep. Also, Blastoise's proficiency as a Rapid Spinner spinner allows the user it to control the hazard game to support other teammates. A few notable hazard setters include Garchomp, Landorus-T, Ting-Lu (AH), and Mew.

Checks and Counters
========
**Disruption against Shell Smash**: Opponents will frequently bring responses to Shell Smash Blastoise to prevent a sweep. This can include priority moves to revenge KO kill, status effects such as Paralysis paralysis to cut its speed Speed, and Mirror Herb to copy the its boosts. Blastoise can sometimes surpass these disruptions avoid disruption (wrong context for surpass) with various items such as Lum Berry and Mental Herb, though it its user needs to correctly predict and prepare for the disruption in prep to accomplish this.

**Defensive Water Types Water-types**: These can often counter Shell Smash Blastoise if it does not have access to Terastallization. Using Tera to hit these Pokemon super effectively helps to remove these checks them. If Blastoise is using a defensive set, this Water-types can often be create a stalemate unless the opponent has Super Effective they have super effective coverage or the ability to inflict status ailments effects reliably, in which case a teammate may need to break through the Defensive Water Type them.

**Powerful Grass and Electric types Grass- and Electric-types**: Blastoise has excellent bulk, but a super effective STAB hit from a powerful Grass- (AH) or Electric-type (AH) can do significant damage to Blastoise it and threaten its defensive sets effectively. Pokemon such as Zarude, Meowscarada, and Raging Bolt can check Blastoise well. In these situations, Blastoise should just use Flip Turn to pivot out to a check.

I implented these changes, I just had one quick question:
In "checks and counters" you changed an instance of "KO" to "kill" and I was under the impression that this would be poor word choice for a smog article. Can you clarify this?
I made two other changes but they seem pretty minor. In "Sitrus Berry" I changed "faster-paced" to "fast-paced" because it sounds more correct. In tera I changed "anything" to "most Pokemon" which is probably a more QC change but I just wanted to cover my bases.

The "KO" over "kill" thing is normally correct, but "revenge kill" is a specific phrase and the only case where it's generally permitted. The other two changes are fine, I was looking at the "anything" a little askance as well.
