Another battle at the good ol' ASB BBP Arena. Designed to be the most impartial fighting grounds possible, it provides a water pool, grassy dirt, a few large boulders here and there, and a partly-cloudy sky. Any materials a move could ever require are always within reach here.

Now before we begin, let me briefly explain the gameflow. Rounds in BBP are played asynchroniously; in other words, both trainers order at different times. First, one trainer gives their Pokemon orders for the next three actions. Then, the opposing trainer orders for the next three actions. Finally, the battling Pokemon act out their trainers' instructions. It's a reptetitive process. I like to think of it like a day/night cycle, but I've also heard it referred to as being "like clockwork," which I presume has a similar implication.

...Anyways, for now all you have to do is choose which Pokemon to send out first.

Well, I suppose I'll send out Aron. And, since I'm sending out second, that means I have to order first.
As I mentioned earlier, I have to order for the next three actions at once... But according to the rules of this match, I also get two Substitutions ("Subs" for short)! Substitutions are "If/Then" conditional statements that change my orders IF something happens. They always consist of at least one Trigger and at least one Action. Let me demonstrate:

Stealth Rock > Head Smash > Head Smash
IF P/E move a2 OR a3 THEN Iron Defense.
IF Aron is Burned when it would act THEN Iron Defense, pushing back.

If none of my subs trigger, then Aron will first use Stealth Rock, then Head Smash the next action, and finally Head Smash again. Whether or not that's what happens is out of my control, though...

The first sub begins with, "IF P/E move a2 or a3." This is shorthand for, "IF the opponent is to use a Protective/Evasive move on action 2 or action 3." In other words, the Substitution will trigger if the second or third move you order is a defensive move such as Protect. This trigger is an example of an Attack Clause. Attack Clauses are clauses that identify another Pokemon's attack.

The second sub contains a Chance Clause, which is a blanket name for all clauses that don't identify attacks. In this case, it checks to see if Aron is Burned.

One more note: The second sub "pushes back" orders, meaning if it triggers then the move Aron would've used that action gets pushed back to next action, and the move after that gets pushed back, and so on. It's a very useful phrase you will encounter often.

I can't possibly predict everything that could happen these next three rounds, but between Attack Clauses and Chance Clauses I usually have the tools to deal with the worst threats I see coming. Now it's your turn to order, Brodaha .

That probably went as well as you could have hoped for. Even though Aron was burned a3, it didn't trigger my second sub because it unexpectedly happened after Aron had already acted. If Aron had been burned a1 instead, then it would have used Iron Defense a2, which would have messed up your Disable... but fortunately for you that didn't happen.
Anyways, it's your turn to order first now. Since you're ordering first, you also have the power to initiate a Switch Phase. The idea behind a Switch Phase is that you'd get to switch Pokemon, but I'd have the chance to switch Pokemon in response. If you don't want to initiate a Switch Phase, then just order as normal and I'll be forced to keep Aron in.

Some weird stuff happened that round. First of all, Roar's phasing effect in BBP doesn't apply until the end of the round. This is also true for self-switching moves like U-Turn.

Secondly, Iron Defense has a special quirk that removes Burn and Paralysis from Steel-Types or Rock-Types in BBP.

Finally, Aron got Drenched by Water Gun, making it weaker to Electric-Type attacks. You'll notice that many weak attacks such as Water Gun and Iron Defense have strange new effects in BBP that are designed to make them more viable.

Anyways, using a phasing move like Roar or a self-switching move like U-Turn forces the user to order first the following round. It's a trade-off. I don't care though because I was already supposed to order first this coming round.

Now seems like a good time to demonstrate a quirk to subs: if the sub would cause a Pokemon to Struggle, it's ignored.

Check it out -- because Mumbao was Taunted, ordering it to use Rototiller a3 would have caused it to Struggle. That's why Mumbao ignored your second sub.
When battles go sideways, the tendency for Pokemon to avoid using Struggle can be a saving grace. Other times it'll cause your Pokemon to just end up attacking and attacking even when doing nothing would be preferable...

Now it's time for me to demonstrate BBP's trademark Combination mechanic! By combining two similar moves, a Pokemon can effectively use both of the moves in the same action. However, because Combinations are extremely difficult for the Pokemon to perform, there are some big drawbacks:
  1. In terms of flavor, the combined moves have to be reasonable to combine (Quick Attack + Ice Punch, Charge Beam + Hyper Beam, Reflect + Barrier, etc.)
  2. Combinations with 0 or less Priority have their Priority reduced by 2.
  3. The Pokemon cannot act the following action. This is referred to as Cooldown.
  4. The EN cost of Combinations tends to be very high.
Because of these drawbacks, Combinations should be used sparingly if at all, much like hot sauce or perfume. But, just like hot sauce, they pack a surprising punch!

[Revenge + Fire Fang] > Cooldown (Flare Blitz) > Flare Blitz
IF damaging Fighting-Type Combination THEN Protect, pushing back.

This is gonna be awesome! By combining Revenge and Fire Fang, Litten is going to create a Fire-Type move with Revenge's damage-boosting properties and Fire Fang's chance to burn -- not to mention, a truckload of Base Damage! And with Mumbao still Taunted for another action, it can't use Protect to avoid it!
The notation a2, "Cooldown (Flare Blitz)", means that Litten is expected to be on Cooldown (unable to act) a2, but if it's not then it should use Flare Blitz. That happens sometimes as a result of Paralysis, flinching, or other shenanigans.

It's going to be impossible for Mumbao to use Wish while it's still Taunted because Wish is a non-damaging move...

OK, let's recap: a1, Mumbao, who was still Taunted, had no actionable orders and ended up Struggling. Litten did its big flashy combo afterwards for lots of damage. The following action, Litten was unable to move because it was on Cooldown. Then a3, Litten scored a KO. That leaves us with one Pokemon each, and you up to order first.

Well, the way I see things you've got this match in the bag. I may as well demonstrate the Chill command. Chill recovers 12 EN, but uses up an action. Like Combinations, Chill is a technique any Pokemon can use; however, because it's a non-damaging move it can't be used while Taunted. That's why it's sometimes difficult to score an EN KO without using Taunt.

Because I used Chill, Litten actually ended the round with more EN than it started with! To keep battles from going on too long, there's usually a limit to how many times you're allowed to use HP-recovering moves and Chills. The limit varies from battle-to-battle, but 5 Chills/2 recoveries is common.

This is probably gonna be the last round of the battle... Unless I get triple-flinch?? (One can hope!)

Bite > Bite > Bite
IF under P/E THEN Chill.

"IF under P/E" is short for "IF under the effect of a Protective/Evasive move." In other words, a failed Protect won't trigger the sub, but a successful Protect will. It's a pretty useful clause.

Wow, two flinches... That's pretty nice. It's not all poffins and pokeblocks for me, though -- using the same move multiple actions in a row incurred a Consecutive Energy Cost.

Here's what that means: If the same move is repeated without breaks, its Energy cost increases by 4EN each time. You'll notice the first Bite cost 4EN, the second cost 8EN, and the third cost 12EN. It's kinda like doing push-ups: unless you take a break, each consecutive push-up will get a little bit more difficult and require a little bit more energy. In Litten's case, the cost of Bite will continue to increase until Litten spends one non-Cooldown action NOT using Bite. Furthermore, this penalty carries over between rounds -- so if I tell Litten to use Bite a1 next round, it'll cost 16EN, but if I wait until a2 before using Bite then it'll go back to 4EN again.

What to do... Crunch alone would do only 12 damage. Any damaging combo that doesn't contain Fake Out would have negative priority (useless). [U-Turn + Fake Out] is the strongest feasible Fake Out combo I can think of, but it would only do 17 damage. And because Bite would cost 16EN to use a1, even if I were to get a flinch the best I could hope for is a tie.
Tsk! I'm grasping at straws...

Lick > [U-Turn + Fake Out] > Cooldown (Bite)
