Type: Bug / Poison

Base Stats: 70 HP / 90 Atk / 70 Def / 60 SpA / 70 SpDef / 40 Spe (BST: 400)

Abilities: Swarm / Insomnia | Sniper (HA)

  • Toxic Thread
  • Pin Missile
  • Sticky Web
  • Foul Play
  • Knock Off
  • Toxic Spikes
  • Lunge
  • Disable

Pros:
  • Sticky Web
  • Technically can function as an anti-lead if the planets align.
Cons:
  • When ranking BST Ariados is the 18th worst fully evolved Pokémon in the game barely beating out champions like Unown, Luvdisc, and Spinda.
  • It has atrocious bulk, tying with Castform.
  • Offensively it has 90 base attack, its only base stat that even comes close to being usable.
  • Base 40 speed makes Ariados one of the slowest Pokémon in the game.
  • Despite getting Swords Dance, Megahorn, and a handful of other offensive moves it has zero ability to effectively use them in any tier.
  • While Sticky Web unanswered may be one of the best button clicks in the game Ariados struggles to set itself apart from other Sticky Web users,
Tera Potential:
1694704866305.png
lets you block Rapid Spin. This can win games with Sticky Web in incredibly rare scenarios but 99% of the time you should never Tera this.

Sample Set:

Ariados @ Focus Sash
Ability: Insomnia
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant
- Sticky Web
- Toxic Spikes / Megahorn
- Knock Off
- Toxic Thread / Shadow Sneak

So let's get this out of the way. Sticky Web is great. Insomnia makes you immune to Sleep as well, giving you occasional minor protection from Spore. But really all that matters is that you click Sticky Web. Knock Off is excellent at crippling pretty much anything it hits while Toxic Thread is a secret signature move that no one ever noticed Ariados got. Toxic Thread Poisons the opponent and lowers its speed one stage. This is quite decent at punishing setup against Ariados. 40 base speed doesn't give Ariados a lot to work with even when the opponent is at -1, but it lets you outrun some slower Pokemon like Baxcalibur, defensive Lando / Great Tusk, and Dragonite once they're all sticky. An alternative more offensive set runs Shadow Sneak + Megahorn to break through lead (sash) Samurott-H and Meowscara while dealing significant damage to Ting-Lu. If you run Megahorn Swarm > Insomnia is actually viable since you're about as bulky as a Breloom and feasibly could utilize the damage bonus more often than the sleep immunity. Most people won't even try to Spore and Ariados anyway.

Some good team support for Ariados is to be a Youtuber where you can use a shitmon to attract views and get money. Another alternative team support is Gholdengo to block Defog / Spin. Typical Hyper Offensive Webs sweeper Pokemon apply here for obvious reasons.

Other Options: lol no a Focus Energy Sniper set isn't going to work unless you're Blimax.

Overall:

Literally one of the weakest Pokemon in the game. Ladder with it anyway and film it, and if you're lucky Youtube will pay you to do so. But Toxic Thread, Sticky Web, and sleep immunity gives Ariados the tiniest, teeniest speck of an OU niche. Should you use it? No. But will it be fun? Also no.

Bruh, you should put more positives, even if it's a bad Mon. For example:
-Insomnia lets you avoid Sleep, all kind of Sleep (not just Spore/Sleep Powder like Leavanny).
-Poison typing allows to absorb Toxic Spikes later in the match.

Pin Missile + Adamant nature deserve at least a mention. 4 hits are guaranteed OHKO to Samurott and Leavanny (another possible Webber) , 2 are enough for Sash Meowscarada, which exists and might Taunt you to prevent Webs (Samurott could do this too) . Ting-Lu gets a massive hit as well. This Mon is bad, but it does have a definite niche and there are things it does well.

Leavanny isn't relevant in OU lol but I'll mention Pin Missile. Breaking Meow and Samurott is definitely a valid niche over other Web Pokemon. Good call!

FWIW Ariados also gets 2 priority moves (massive L it doesn't get first impression but w/e)

- Sucker Punch
- Shadow Sneak

For Meowscarada, you can get your sticky web up turn 1, and then megahorn+shadow sneak it, or for Samurott, you can guarantee it only gets 1 layer of spikes up for an immediate KO threat.

252 Atk Ariados Megahorn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Samurott-Hisui: 368-434 (114.6 - 135.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ariados @ Focus Sash
Ability: Swarm
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sticky Web
- Shadow Sneak
- Megahorn
- Knock Off

Frankly I'm running it like this because there's just no shot you're going to get anything else done past the sticky web, the main niche is that it can serve as a bit of an offensive anti-lead, threatening other leads, but its #1 job is get up webs and thats it. For samurott-H, turning the game into a 5v5 isn't a bad deal so even if it doesn't get webs up cheesing with only 1 layer of spikes on your side is passable. Leech life isn't strong enough, pin missile is RNG, and I like the RNG odds of landing megahorn over landing 4+ pin missile. It becomes less reliable vs. meowscarada, but more reliable vs. samurott.

I run speed over HP just by the off chance you vs. stall and knock off can do something extra vs. low offensive mons. Ain't like with the bulk its going to survive much and 90% of the time it's suiciding so sash makes it always a 2HKO regardless.

And just incase doubts about leech life...

252+ Atk Ariados Leech Life vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Samurott-Hisui: 270-318 (84.1 - 99%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Ariados Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Samurott-Hisui: 39-46 (12.1 - 14.3%) -- possible 7HKO

Even with adamant, ariados cannot even 2HKO with the stronger priority + leech life, megahorn even with a neutral nature can.

Great points! I'll update the OP!
