Are there other things to do other than games

I don't know about everyone else but I have been looking for something interesting, cool, and significant to do in my spare time. Pokemon and other games are fun and all, but I feel the need to do something fun that will help me later in life.

Here's what I do.
  1. Go to school
  2. Do ROTC Raiders Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday after school until 5pm
  3. Come home play games/eat
  4. Do homework

I like martial arts and have an interest in baseball, but I don't like working on using my nunchucks/ Escrima Stick for hours. Unfortunately I don't have time for baseball.

In the future I would like to go into Computer Engineering or Computer Sciences and Technology. I will minor in Creative Writing if I still have a passion for it as I grow older.

I like writing but I am not diligent towards it and can't do that for hours either.

SO I am looking for suggestions on cool things that normal people don't do everyday that occupy time and could be useful in my life later on.

I've searched around a few times so please be creative.

Insofar as weaponry based martial arts goes, Nunchucks aren't that good in my opinion and while Escrima is fun to play around with, I'm not a fan of the nonlinear movements.

If you can find the time, I highly recommend picking up some sort of sword based martial arts. Insofar as ancient weapons go, the sword is truly one of the most diverse and in my opinion, the most fun. Granted it won't have much application unless you get a job teaching Martial Arts, but it is still a great way to stay in shape and have fun.

Lol I don't think so. I don't like reading although I probably should.
Anything that doesn't require a lot of supplies or you just know is addicting and productive would be awesome

Swords sounds fun. I have to wait until I move into my new house, which has a bigger backyard before I ask my dad for even a practice sword (unsharpened sword). I do want to use swords however that's why I got the stick for my birthday

going to the gym / working out and exercising in general is always a (surprisingly) fun time. you would be amazed how much healthier and happier you feel after just one week of going to the gym every single day. you dont even have to be one of those fucking psychos who lift like 900 pound weights for hours at a time lol. just a nice 30 minute jog on a treadmill is good exercise. as strange as this sounds, it also really opens up your mind, as exercise makes your creative thinking grow exponentially!

lol this makes me sound like a total softie but if you have some spare time, volunteering is a really rewarding thing to do. especially at a place like a retirement home or homeless shelter. it seriously makes you feel extremely good inside, dont knock it until you try it!

oh and nothing beats getting mad drunk with your friends on a friday night, js .... obviously it wont be "useful" later in life, but it's an insanely good time~

Personally, I wouldn't get a metal sword without a specific reasoning. My dull metal sword is solely for tournament forms and my sharp sword only sees the light of day on tests. When you're practicing, the wooden sword is best (less ware and tare, no getting in trouble with police, no scaring neighbors, etc).

This is porbably the second suggestion I will take into consideration. Matter the fact I'll do it right now!

I work out for 90 minutes in ROTC Raiders. We do endurance training. I would like to hit the gym Snorlaze, but I'd be too tired unfortunately.
I also help my grandparents a whole lot so I guess that'd be my charity work.

Working out, learning to cook, or reading can all be things that can preoccupy you short-term but also help you long-term.

Cooking is something I'm now trying to get into slowly, but it is very rewarding and it doesn't have to be expensive! You can even just focus on things like cookies or pancakes and stuff first cause I sure as hell can't do anything better than that really, but fortunately they taste super good so it's not like my inexperience is making anything not worthwhile.

applying ancient roman virtues to your life could yield some pretty marvelous results i would imagine, there are a lot of them and anyone who endeavors to uphold as many as possible would surely be a hella dude or lady

here are a few cool ones!!

pietas: duty, be it familial or religious or whatever

gravitas: seriousness, depth of character

dignitas: erroneously assumed to literally mean 'dignity', this is some hardcore shit that's more about how one carries oneself. style, charisma, esteem, even stuff like physical fitness

there are a ton! how many can YOU champion?

Don't get a wooden sword if you want to be good with an actual sword as the wooden ones are unable to replicate the true feel of a real sword. I've never trained with a sword, but this advice comes from my sensai who trained with live blades under a grand master so I trust his opinion.

I have one of the practice bamboo swords. It's long so it feels heavier when use it than my wooden katana. However the difference is really the ease of use. I really do want to get an unsharpened sword however.

My dad did some really cool martial arts stuff, so what he shows me is cool. There is also youtube haha. I lack a true sensai however.

Musical instruments are really good; guitars are relatively cheap and easy to learn, and so are keyboards. It's easy to feel like you're improving when you learn an instrument, and just carrying a guitar gets you attention, if you're into that stuff.

Not to mention if you have musical friends then you can get together, jam, and maybe even perform at school, uni, bars etc.

Well, if you're into writing like me a bit, then you should make a small story about something.

Like this example I found:
Eternal Happiness, I am yours forever.
That story reminds me of one where this guy's dad had a cancer, so the son got like over 10 degrees in the medical field and like 3 of them together helped cure his dad's rare sickness.

I could definately try writing short stories considering I don't feel zen while drawing apparently. I like writing because it causes me to expand my vocabulary.

*
I do want to pick up an instrument or sing possibly. I've tried in the past and failed terribly ( sooo bad), so I've veered away from them for years.

These are really good suggestions, which i expected from such a large amount of members. Keep them coming I'm like these.

So far I will try to get a normal wooden sword, write short stories, and ask my musical cousins for advice.

The thing is, chances are if your sensai trained under a grand master, he'd had plenty of experience before hand. I meant to say that you should start wooden and wait until you have the safety experience before using a metal blade (and honestly, you shouldn't be using a live blade unless you're doing live cutting/are doing the intensity of training of your teacher [if you're in America, you aren't], the difference is psychosomatic).

okay man i used to be just like you! minus the martial arts stuff! here are some things that i like to do to fill up my time!

1. Khan Academy. Khan Academy is basically online courses taught mostly by this dude, Sal Khan, that cover a fuckton of subjects. They are pretty easy to digest and EXTREMELY interesting. You can learn so many skills, you can be years ahead of everyone on your maths, and you'll have fun and feel a better guy for doing this. It's learning in its purest form -- learning for the sake of fucking learning! I assume that you are in high school. Seriously man, you have so much free time now. You'll be a really smart dude and you'll have fun doing it.

2. Read. I bet that you have a library somewhere near you, be it at your school or in your town. Just do it. I can give you a list of a ton of shit that would be awesome to read. There's nothing better than getting lost in a crazy good book like slaughterhouse 5 (my personal favorite). You'll be more well read and will have a better grasp of books in general.

3. Music!!The Needle Drop. Sputnik Music. RateMyMusic Listen to an album a day, a new artist a day, a new song a day. The latter will take five minutes of your time and probably end up expanding your music collection tenfold. Finding a song that you just click with is crazy, and you can download a lot of songs one night and just listen to one on the bus or w/e.

4. Friends / girlfriend. Hang out with your friends more. Get a girlfriend. Even if you don't like many people, try to start up some conversations, try to go out some. Get a bike and troll the goddamn wal mart if you so desire. You probably won't be living where you do now when you're grown. Fuck around with some ladies. Get over any shyness you have and ask out that girl. Worst that happens is she says no and in a month nobody remembers.

5. smoke weed. I kind of hesitate to recommend this because some people just be antisocial and smoke weed all the time, but if it's a once in a while thing, it's awesome. Do combine with music, tv. If you can, go smoke and just explore outside on a crisp night. It's really amazing man. You feel so peaceful, laying on the cool grass and looking at the stars. Go pick up an eighth and smoke with your friends. Chill out. Use sparingly, but if the friends are busy and you feel like being lazy, do it.

I'm loving the Khan Academy suggestion I will definitely check it out, because I love math and will need it in my future career. I am in high school so thanks a ton.

Unfortunately my dad won't let me go out on a real date and i have no gf atm <_<

Those are things I do not discuss with other people xD
I try not to indulge in pornagraphy. Masturbation isn't exactly the most holy thing a guy like me can do so yeah.. Educational responses and productive replies are what I was looking for.

These.

Reading and music can actually get you more friends, friends can show you new music/books/etc, and the cycle continues.

I guess you'll want to develop away from whatever TIK is.

Any parks or woodlands nearby? It does wonders for your mood to set aside a day or two every week unplugged from electronics just hiking around, climbing hills and hanging out with trees and birds and gophers. Even if you can't access a natural setting, just walking with no place in mind to go in general feels good.

There's also a controversial book I like that I won't mention for fear of thread derailment. Rhymes with:
"
"

In any case, don't worry about doing things just to build up life experience points or anything, just get active (not necessarily exercise but that's good too), stay alert and don't shy away from the hard stuff. Whether you build character or not will have less to do with your activities than how you receive experiences, good and bad.

I love the woods that are safe enough to be in alone. That's why I want to move so badly so I can have our huge backyard. It's attached to a river and there's an acre of land behind it full of forest like life. Great suggestion I can only hope for now. Thanks for your personal opinion on the subject too.
