LC Alolan Sandshrew

[OVERVIEW]

With its new forme, ability, and movepool, Sandshrew has almost singlehandedly brought hail into viability in LC and has become a decent threat for teams to prepare for. It also has a relatively good offensive typing, although a 4x weakness to Fighting, along with weaknesses to Fire and Ground, can be detrimental under certain circumstances. Although best when functioning in hail, it can also be used outside of it as a Rapid Spin user and a relatively good attacker. Its Attack and Defense are also quite good. Additionally, not many Pokemon in LC can defend against +2 Alolan Sandshrew in Hail. However, keep in mind that its low Special Defense stat severely limits it against much of the tier.

move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Swords Dance / Rapid Spin / Icicle Crash

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Icicle Spear is Alolan Sandshrew's primary STAB option with 100% accuracy, taking advantage of LC's varying damage rolls as well as breaking the Focus Sash of Pokemon such as Abra and Diglett. Icicle Crash is its other Ice-type STAB option and is better for dealing with Mudbray's Stamina as well as having more reliable damage output, but it suffers from its lower accuracy. Iron Head works quite well as a secondary STAB move, as it's 100% accurate and has a useful flinch chance, making it a good default damage option. Earthquake provides very important coverage on Steel-types, Fire-types, and certain Water-types such as Mareanie and Chinchou, which is very important coverage. Swords Dance gives Alolan Sandshrew an extremely high Attack stat and essentially lets it knock out almost any Pokemon that doesn't resist all of its coverage. Finally, Rapid Spin provides utility outside of hail by letting it clear entry hazards.

Set Details
========

Life Orb provides some much-needed extra damage for Alolan Sandshrew, although it does take away from its utility in its good defensive bulk. Alternatively, Eviolite can make setting up Swords Dance as well as switching into hits much easier. Alolan Sandshrew is EVed with maximum Attack and enough Speed to outspeed or tie with most Choice Scarf Pokemon and many other sweepers that boost Speed such as Shellder and Omanyte. The rest of the EVs are put into Defense and HP to help it survive priority attacks, and since Alolan Sandshrew's low Special Defense doesn't let it survive much more even with extra investment, there is no need to add any more to that. Alolan Sandshrew's Adamant nature is the primary choice for extra Attack, but Jolly can be used to always outspeed 18 Speed Choice Scarf users such as Doduo and most sweepers.

Usage Tips
========

Try to keep Alolan Sandshrew healthy if it can make a dent in your opponent's team; this is less necessary if the opponent has Timburr or Croagunk, as they can easily stop an Alolan Sandshrew sweep. Alolan Sandshrew can also be played as a powerful attacker throughout the match to weaken the opponent's team for another late-game sweeper. Also, be careful when setting up Swords Dance or using Rapid Spin, as Alolan Sandshrew has extremely low Special Defense and can be easily OHKOed by most super effective moves, especially without Eviolite. If using Life Orb, be wary of switching Alolan Sandshrew in too much, as it can be worn down easily. Finally, if you have a hail setter, always put it up before attempting to sweep with Alolan Sandshrew.

Team Options
========

A hail setter is almost essential when using a sweeper set, and Snover and Amaura do this job quite well, as Snover covers Water-types and Amaura can set Stealth Rock. Notably, although it looks appealing, Alolan Vulpix doesn't have great synergy with Alolan Sandshrew, as it doesn't provide any of the extra coverage or utility that Snover and Amaura offer. Mareanie has good type synergy with Sandshrew, as it can check Fighting- and Fire-types while Alolan Sandshrew can provide coverage on Electric-types. Additionally, Foongus also checks Fighting-types alongside bulky Water-types that Alolan Sandshrew struggles against. Gothita traps and removes Alolan Sandshrew's biggest threats, Fighting-types, such as Timburr and Croagunk. Finally, Spikes and Stealth Rock support from Pokemon such as Dwebble and Ferroseed can help Alolan Sandshrew score some much-needed KOs.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Choice Scarf Alolan Sandshrew set can be used to reliably use Rapid Spin without hail, but it usually isn't worth running due to it being commonly outsped and being outclassed by Drilbur in this role. A set focused around Rapid Spin and extra bulk could work because it can get around Pumpkaboo-XL, but it suffers from its weaknesses to Fighting and Fire. Although it doesn't cover many Pokemon that Alolan Sandshrew doesn't already hit, Leech Life can give it some recovery against common Pokemon like Snivy and Abra, but Alolan Sandshrew uses a lot of other options better. Brick Break can be used to hit Ferroseed, but Earthquake covers many more threats and again Alolan Sandshrew uses many other options better. Alolan Sandshrew can also set up hail on its own, but this takes up an important moveslot that could easily be cleared up by a teammate like Snover or Amaura.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Almost every Fighting-type can OHKO Alolan Sandshrew, including priority users. Mach Punch and Vacuum Wave both OHKO Alolan Sandshrew if used by powerful Pokemon like Timburr and Croagunk and can stop a sweep right in its tracks.

**Bulky Water-types**: If they aren't weak to Earthquake, bulky Water-types such as Staryu and Frillish can survive any attack from Alolan Sandshrew and fire back with a powerful Scald with the chance to burn. Staryu OHKOes with an Analytic-boosted Hydro Pump after Alolan Sandshrew takes a turn of damage from Life Orb. Frillish more reliably burns Alolan Sandshrew with Will-O-Wisp and can block Rapid Spin. Slowpoke with Flamethrower or Fire Blast shuts down Alolan Sandshrew completely. Dewpider also resists all of Alolan Sandshrew's main moves and can wall it easily.

**Opposing Weather**: The ever-popular sun archetype can strike a weather war against hail, and since sun sweepers use Fire-type moves, they will usually win. Vulpix especially can revenge kill Alolan Sandshrew after it scores a KO.

**Special Attackers**: Since Alolan Sandshrew has extremely low Special Defense, any Sturdy user, Focus Sash user, or just bulky Pokemon in general such as Magnemite, Abra, or Staryu can be an issue, though Magnemite can be dealt with through entry hazards and Abra through Icicle Spear.

**Bronzor**: Bronzor completely walls everything that Alolan Sandshrew can do, making it the best possible counter to it.

mention icicle spear is mainly useful for sashbra and you're basically choosing between sashbra and mudbray as checks when choosing between the two.

is leech life even good enough to be slashed? i get your logic, but it just seems better suited to OO. I'd rather run double ice stab than leech life tbh.

set details
mention eviolite makes setting up a lot easier, and swords dance is more suited to eviolite. It also allows Sandshrew to switch in a bit more freely.

mention that jolly outspeeds 18 spe scarfers, mainly notable for Doduo. Jolly actually ties with 19 spe +1 ponyta.

usage tips
  • Above all, conserve Sandshrew if it can make a dent in your opponent's team, but if the opponent has Croagunk, Timburr, or another one of its checks or counters (listed below) - what does this mean?

team options could be a bit bigger i guess
foongus is similar to mareanie in that it checks fighters, and also bulky waters which sandshrew struggles against.
mention that amaura can set rocks which helps a sweep, getting rid of sturdy users as well. mention some other hazard users.
gothita can trap timburr/gunk.

i wouldn't put torchic in team options, I feel like there's better receivers

counters
bronzor completely walls the fuck out of sandshrew, there is no better counter.

dewpider actually walls it as well, put that under bulky waters since it resists all its moves

Corporal Levi consider this a qc application

Moves: Earthquake also hits notably hits Fire-types

Set Details:
- The extra Defense also helps it against priority like Pawn's Sucker or Corphish's Aqua Jet
- Like Rowan said, Jolly ties with Jolly Ponyta, mention scarf Doduo/Gastly or Smash Shellder/Omanyte instead

Usage Tips: It's easiest to set up SD against walls or predicted switches

Other Options:
- Mention using more bulk on the set similar to normal Sandshrew

Checks and Counters:
Change Priority Fighting-types to just Fighting-types and specifically highlight them in this section. Most Fighters can live a hit and OHKO back, making them checks. Remove the Mienfoo section and mention it here.

Change the last section to just Special Attackers. Mention them abusing Sandshrew's low SpDef and make Magnemite and Sash Abra key examples, but also mention their downsides like Magnemite losing if there are entry hazards or Abra losing to Icicle Spear. Special Tirtouga is really niche and I don't think it should be mentioned here.

Implement everything Rowan said, QC 1/3 :toast:

Moves:

I think you should explain why Icicle Crash is better for Mudbray, as it would be unclear to those who don't know what Stamina is or what it does. So like, note that because each of icicle spear's hits gives Mudbray a +1 Defense boost, Icicle Crash allows you to better work around Mudbray.

Other Options:

Mention the only reason of using Sandshrew outside of hail is that it's a spinner that gets around Pumpkaboo, the premier spinblocker in the tier. LO Staryu does the same, but it's a glass cannon, unlike Sandshrew.

Team Options:

Gothita is amazing for hail. Besides just what Rowan said with Timburr and Croagunk, it can also trap Mareanie, Staryu, the occasionally-used Stufful, and Mienfoo with a bit of prior damage. Furthermore, it also helps immensely with weather wars. The presence of Gothita makes Bellsprout unable to get kills during the last turn of sun, and forces the Bellsprout user to save Sleep Powder for Gothita, as otherwise it can live a hit and OHKO it with Psychic. In the same vein, if Bellsprout already dropped Sleep Powder, Gothita can come in after Bellsprout gets a kill and trap it.

Checks and Counters:

You should note Vulpix in here, because once it comes in, it outspeeds and OHKOs due to Drought.

im not qc but yea.

Leech Life seems underwhelming - I'd move it to OO.

I would slash Jolly before Adamant. A lot of important sweepers hit 26/28 and Scarf Doduo hits 27, while 18 vs 17 Atk doesn't affect 18/21/24 Defense with Iron Head, which are arguably the most important benchmarks.

Set Details:
Scraggy isn't too relevant for Sandshrew's Speed tier - maybe replace it with Shellder.

Usage Tips:
Above all, conserve Sandshrew if it can make a dent in your opponent's team, but if the opponent has Croagunk, Timburr, or another one of its checks or counters (listed below) it is less important to conserve
I get what you're trying to say but maybe reword this as:
Try to keep Sandshrew healthy if it can make a dent in your opponent's team; this is less necessary if the opponent has Timburr or Croagunk, as they can easily stop a Sandshrew sweep

Team Options:
Sandshrew isn't really a check to Ground-types for Mareanie because it can't switch in, so get rid of that.
Mention Spikes support from the likes of Dwebble can help Sandshrew secure some KOs, such as against Mienfoo.

Other Options:
Mention that Brick Break is Sandshrew's strongest option against Ferroseed, but Earthquake hits more threats.
Mention that Sandshrew itself can set up Hail.

Checks and Counters:
In the Water-type section, mention that Frillish can more reliably burn Sandshrew with Will-O-Wisp as well as block Rapid Spin attempts, and that offensive Analytic Staryu always OHKOes Life Orb Sandshrew with Hydro Pump after one round of Life Orb recoil. Also, mention that Flamethrower or Fire Blast Slowpoke completely shuts down Sandshrew throughout the match thanks to Regenerator and its physical bulk. Remove Mareanie because it loses if Scald doesn't burn.
Remove the Mienfoo section since it's covered as a Fighting-type. (No need to describe Mienfoo specifically in the Fighting-type section since +2 Life Orb Icicle Crash actually OHKOes it after Spikes.)

Good work! QC 2/3

You don't write it up right now, it's just bullet points H0W3AN
Now that he has two QC checks, it is actually time for him to write it up. That way, the QC team can go over the entire writeup to prevent the addition of any mistakes simply because the analysis is now in paragraph form. That's just one of the neat little nuances of LC QC!

No I mean I knew that, but since these are the pre analyses, aren't they all supposed to be in bullet points? Like all the current OU anaylses, or are we doing things a little different? If so, then my bad then :P

Nah check out Levi's analysis on Foongus, we aren't doing it like OU is.

- for icicle crash mention that mudbray has stamina - newer players might read it and be confused as to why icicle crash is better for beating mudbray.

Set Details
-"Alternatively, Eviolite is better for a more utility based Sandshrew with Rapid Spin, but its extra Defense and Special Defense boosts are welcome on most sets giving it the ability to more safely set-up or switch in and out. " - I don't think Rapid Spin is relevant when choosing between Life Orb and Eviolite. I do think Swords Dance is relevant though, so change it to something like "Eviolite makes setting up Swords Dance easier and the boosts to its defenses also allow it to switch in more frequently."
-Jolly only ties with +1 Ponyta so remove that.

Usage Tips
I actually disagree with this section. I think saying Sandshrew needs to be conserved for late game is a bit misleading as I believe it can be played in a sort of hit-and-run style since it can threaten many things and cause dents in the opposing team from the beginning of the game as long as you can get it in safely. Basically say that it is primarily used as a late game sweeper, but it can also be used to put pressure on the opposing team throughout the match.
Mention that if you're using Life Orb be wary of switching in so much because it will get worn down easily.

Other Options
Don't compare to normal sandshrew cos normal sandshrew isn't common enough that people know it's set. Just say "A bulky Eviolite set with Rapid Spin could be used for its ability to get around Pumpkaboo, but it suffers from its low Speed and lack of recovery."

c&c
as madoka said under the sun section, just mention vulpix specifically in that it can revenge kill sandshrew as it outspeeds once the sun goes up

Moves
========

Earthquake hits provides very important coverage on (if you only meant the coverage on the Water-types is important then keep it as is and put "the latter" before "which") Steel-types, Fire-types, and certain Water-types such as Mareanie and Chinchou, which is very important coverage. Swords Dance gives Alolan Sandshrew an extremely high Attack stat and essentially lets it knock out almost any Pokemon that doesn't resist all of its coverage. Finally, Rapid Spin provides utility outside of hail by letting it clear entry hazards.

Set Details
========

Life Orb provides some much-needed extra damage for Alolan Sandshrew, although it does take away from its utility in its good defensive bulk. Alternatively, Eviolite can make setting up Swords Dance as well as switching into hits much easier. (AP) Alolan Sandshrew is EVed with maximum Attack and enough Speed to as it needs every stat point it in can get for Attack and outspeed or tie with most Choice Scarf Pokemon and many other sweepers that boost Speed such as Shellder and Omanyte. The rest of the EVs are put into Defense and HP to help it survive priority attacks, and since Alolan Sandshrew's low Special Defense doesn't let it livesurvive much more even with extra investment, there is no need to add any more to that. Alolan Sandshrew's Adamant nature is the primary choice for extra Attack, but Jolly can be used to always outspeed 18 Speed Choice Scarf users such as Doduo and most sweepers.

Usage Tips
========

Try to keep Alolan Sandshrew healthy if it can make a dent in your opponent's team; this is less necessary if the opponent has Timburr or Croagunk, as they can easily stop an Alolan(space)Sandshrew sweep.

========

Other Options
=============

A Choice Scarf Alolan Sandshrew set can be used to reliably use Rapid Spin without hail, but it usually isn't worth running due to it being commonly outsped and being outclassed by Drilbur in this role. A set focused around Rapid Spin and extra bulk could work because it can get around Pumpkaboo-Super Pumpkaboo-XL, but it suffers from its weaknesses to Fighting and Fire. Alolan(space)Sandshrew can also set up hail on its own, but this takes up an important moveslot that could easily be cleared up by a teammate like Snover or Amaura.

Checks and Counters
===================
