Standard
########
name: Standard
move 1: Shadow Ball
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Protect
move 4: Taunt / Sludge Bomb
ability: Levitate
item: Focus Sash
evs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
nature: Timid
Moves
========
- Shadow Ball hits almost everything for at least neutral damage
- Will-O-Wisp cripples every physical attacker, and most importantly Mega Kangaskhan
- Substitue protects you from Sucker Punch, and works well on predicted switches
- Taunt blocks opponent's Tailwind, Will-O-Wisp, etc
- Sludge Bomb lets Gengar hit Mega Kangaskhan as well as Fairy-type Pokemon hard
Set Details
========
- EV spread and nature maximize speed and power.
Usage Tips
========
- Easy to bring in on its 3 immunities, including one to the common Earthquake.
- Easily comes in on Kangaskhan, and works well double targeting a slower mega such as Mega Charizard-Y.
- Gengar is mainly good because it partners so well with Mega Kangaskhan, and if not using Mega Kangaskhan it loses a huge niche because Gengar is great at burning Mawile and stoping Will-O-Wisp from Rotom-A. Gengar also helps win the mirror vs other Mega Kangaskhan because it resists almost all of its used attacks and can burn it.
Team Options
========
- Mega Kangaskhan is a great partner because it stops opponents from burning it, and it burns intimidators in return
- Great offensive synergy with Garchomp, and can kill Fairies for Salamence as well.
- Quick Guard Users like Talonflame and Scrafty make for good support to prevent priority from wrecking Gengar.
- Talonflame can also provide Tailwind support and KO opposing priority users before they touch Gengar.
Perish Trap
########
name: Perish Trap
move 1: Perish Song
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Protect
move 4: Shadow Ball / Disable
ability: Shadow Tag
item: Gengarite
evs: 252 HP / 252 Spd / 4 Def
nature: Timid
Moves
========
- Perish Song is a staple even with Perish Song partners it is the point of the set
- Substitute helps to stall turns of Perish Song, and it works great with Gengar's base speed
- Protect is another move to help stall turns of Perish Song, and it has the advantage of not hurting Gengar
- Shadow Ball in the last spot to kill a weakened foe then Perish Song the last two enemy pokemon.
- Disable is also an option to remove moves from Pokemon that can kill Mega Gengar. Disable is very effective due to Gengar's base speed, but more important because it partners so well with Prankster + Encore partners such as Liepard.
Set Details
========
- EVs maximize the niche of the set to Perish Trap and effectively annoy opponents. Special Attack really is not needed even with Shadow Ball.
Usage Tips
========
- Mega Gengar is the fastest, and therefore, most deadly Perish Trapper in VGC.
- Great as a lead vs Mega Kangaskhan leads to Perish Song immediately because most Kanga cannot kill it
(Everything else I can think of should be in team options)
- If you're using Perish Trap Mega Gengar the whole team revolves around it. It's not meant to be slapped on to teams because it needs a ton of support to be used at its best.
Team Options
========
- Gothitelle is the obvious partner so Mega Gengar can switch out after the Perish Song. Gothorita with Eviolite can also be used but is secondary to Gothitelle.
- Politoed can help vs Sun Teams and has Perish Song. It also can get rid of Sand which Mega Gengar appreciates.
- Azumarill also has Perish Song, and Sap Sipper Azumarill checks Mega Zard's well.
- Red Card Amoonguss with Spore can put something to Sleep or protect Gengar with Rage Powder to get a Perish Song. Then Gothitelle comes in on its place.
- Because Politoed is common as a partner so is Kingdra and other Swift Swim Pokemon.
- Liepard has great base speed with Fake Out, and has access to Prankster and Encore, which can make trapping very easy for Gengar. Liepard also can Encore before Mega Gengar Disable, move locking an opponent.
Other Options
========
- Destiny Bond
- Trick Room
- Substitute + Black Sludge
- Offensive Variant
- Will-O-Wisp
Checks & Counters
########
- Tyranitar
- Conkeldurr
- Hydreigon
- Choice Scarf Pokemon
- Greninja
- Goodra
