Welcome to Todd Bonzalez's ADV LC Open!
This is a double elimination ADV LC tour with a prize pool of $100 USD, generously supplied by faint! 1st place will receive $60 USD, 2nd place will receive $25 USD, and 3rd place will receive $15 USD. This metagame has not been played recently so it is encouraged to try new things and build your own team!

Tournament rules are as follows:
- General tournament rules and regulations apply.
- Best of three, double elimination. Play your games using the [Gen 3] LC format.
- This tournament will use the ADV LC banlist, which can be found on Smogon's strategy dex.
- If metagame changes occur during the middle of a round, they will take effect in the subsequent round.
- Battles must take place on Pokemon Showdown! or the SmogTours server.
- Battle ties do not progress either player towards winning the set.
- Replays are mandatory for all matches played to prevent disputes.

Please play your matches on Smogtours, as sleep moves may be banned mid week on main! (see the following post if you are curious why)

Effective Round 4 of the tournament, all sleep inducing moves will be banned!

Hypnosis Ponyta and Meowth have become a very common sight in ADV LC despite the move’s low accuracy. Sing, which is even less accurate, has seen use on Skitty. The advantage putting a Pokemon to sleep provides is so strong that it is worth running a move that hits a little over half the time - which I believe is a sign that sleep moves are uncompetitive. In addition to the inaccurate Hypnosis and Sing, Venonat is able to use a 100% accurate Sleep Powder and then Baton Pass out (with a Substitute or Pinch berry boost, or sometimes both,) to a teammate who can take advantage of the sleeping Pokemon.

A sleeping Pokemon is arguably worse than a KO’d Pokemon in ADV LC. It presents a setup opportunity for sweepers like Anorith and Poliwag, who can easily run away with a game when given the chance to set up. Ponyta can take advantage of opponents it puts to sleep itself, setting up Sunny Day or a Substitute to do serious damage to the opposing team. Unfortunately, there are not many options for counter play to sleep moves. Abilities like Insomnia have limited distribution and are unable to counter top sleep inducers like Meowth and Ponyta, and also rely on the opponent clicking Hypnosis and not an attacking move. Lum Berry is an option, but the opportunity cost of missing out on Sitrus Berry recovery or a pinch berry boost is huge. Lum Berry also requires that you are faster than your opponent and able to KO them before they can put you back to sleep. Sleep Talk, which is already weak counterplay to sleep, has a bug in ADV: if it’s the last move a sleeping Pokemon uses before it switches out, the sleep counter doesn’t go down at all! This means that Pokemon has burned 0 sleep turns. Staying in to wake up is difficult as well as sleep can last up to 5 turns in ADV, and most Pokemon in the tier are knocked out in 2 or 3.

Due to the limited counterplay, a player can easily turn a game heavily in their favor simply by hitting a sleep move. This can reduce games to whether or not a player is lucky enough to hit a Hypnosis or lucky enough to wake up before the 5 turn(!!) maximum sleep in ADV. I believe this is uncompetitive and unhealthy for the metagame.
