Back in the old days of 2009, the now-standard Team Preview did not yet exist. This project aims to bring back some of those deductive teambuilding exercises updated to the modern generation. Hopefully, the process of trying to figure out the right way to finish a team will aid the community in general building and playing skills, and teach you to use team preview effectively.

Each week, I will post a team that is entirely completed; moves, EVs, items, and all; except for one Pokemon which will be left out. Using your knowledge of the metagame, posters may then suggest full sets that they think would best complete the team. It's essential that you suggest an entire set, as it can be fairly clear that the last Pokemon may be Incineroar any given popular threat, but as that final Pokemon needs to patch up any remaining holes, the devil is in the details to find the best way to round out the team. In that submission, the poster should explain their thought process to convince people to give them their vote. This phase of the week will also serve as the discussion phase, allowing anyone who feels something may have been left out of a nomination to add their input, and also for people to state some pros and cons they have seen in nominations preceding their post. This should hopefully allow for a more informed next step:

After a few days have passed to allow full discussion of the submissions, the voting round will begin and anyone may vote for whichever person they believe best completed the posted team. The person whose submission wins the popular vote will be the winner of the week, and be added to the Hall of Fame. Once the decision has been made, the builder of the original team will be given a chance to reveal the true final Pokemon and their reasoning behind that decision.

RULES:
1. Standard forum rules apply, so no flaming, antagonizing, or judging other people's submissions outside of constructive criticisms.
2. No move or item slashes in your set submissions - you can't have more than one item or more than 4 moves in battle, so you can't have them here either.
3. Only one nomination per person, per round. If you believe there are multiple good "lasts", then just pick whichever you think is best.
4. No changing the other members of the team, including sets. The last will have been picked based on the given sets, so your suggestion should do the same. If you have a couple small things that you think could help, you may mention them, just don't tear apart the provided team.
5. Voting for your own nomination is NOT allowed.
6. Please PM me if you have a team that you would like to be featured in this project! The winner of the week before will always have precedence in providing the next team, but they may elect to not do so. I would like to occasionally include DUU, if you would rather submit a DUU team feel free to do so.
7. No stealing of ideas. For example, if someone else has already posted a bulky Tapu Fini set and you think that a different spread on that same Tapu Fini would fit better, tough. However, if the sets are different enough that they clearly serve different roles, multiple nominations may be made for the same Pokemon. Use your judgment on this one, I will not hesitate to make you change your nom if it is too similar to a preceding one.
8. Reservation posts are allowed, but after 1 hour they will expire.
9. Failure to abide by any of the above rules may get you barred from future contributions

This team was built around a couple of cool ideas I've seen recently and decided to combine, those ideas being CM Necrozma, and the core of Mega Salamence + Tapu Bulu. For their sets I decided to simply use the mixed Tailwind set on Salamence and Swords Dance set on Bulu, with Grassy Seed on Necrozma being nice for physical attacks, and Earth Power providing good coverage with Photon Geyser. Next I added Volcanion for a Fire-type, feeling it fitted better than Incineroar and was good for being able to KO opposing Incineroar. For Volcanion's third move I have Roar to help against Trick Room. After this I seen that I didn't have a Ground-type and thought I could do with an Intimidate user outside of Salamence pre-mega, so I went with Landorus-T. Going for a standard sort of special bulky set, Landorus provides a lot of utility to the team, from setting Stealth Rock and removing items, to reliably providing Intimidate and being able to pivot with U-turn.

But what's their last?

The main issue I noticed with yoda's team was the lack of a reliable answer to seed zapdos, since the main way to deal with it is cm necrozma. A well played cm latias or cresselia, mainly latias, could be problematic as well if roar volcanion is low, icium kyub could improve these matchups but, since most of the team doesn't like to switch in vs metagross and this would make the team 3x rock weak, my nom for this team is chansey:

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Healer
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Heal Pulse
- Soft-Boiled
- Toxic
- Seismic Toss

Toxic chansey is a good answer to zapdos, latias and cress, can provide more longevity to the only mon with a speed control move on the team and help with the necrozma/bulu set up, healer is really nice as well since it can cure toxic on necrozma. Having a double intimidate core also helps chansey since it can wall strong physical attackers after a drop.

sorry i took a long ass nap ANYWAYS
One of the main issues i have with Yodaisbad2798's team is the lack of answers and switchins to Kyu-B. I also didn't feel comfortable with Roar being the only answer to bulky setup sweepers such as CM M Latias and CM Cresselia. As such, I wanted to find something that can act as a secondary check to CM M Latias and Cresselia while being able to switch in comfortably into Kyu-B 's attacks without taking a ton of damage and immediately OHKO/force out offensive Kyu-B variants which seem to be much more problematic than the AV variant for this team.

Enter AV Genesect

Genesect @ Assault Vest
Ability: Download
EVs: 192 Atk / 92 SpA / 224 Spe
Hasty Nature
- U-turn
- Iron Head
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower

The standard AV Genesect set, nothing special. U-Turn coupled with Roar makes for a solid check to CM M Latias/Cresselia, while allowing Genesect to pivot effectively. Iron Head is good for OHKOing non AV Kyu-B variants and also Tapu Lele, which again could be quite annoying for this team to deal with due to Necrozma being the only Pokemon on the team thats able to take Terrain boosted STABs from the Tapu comfortably. Flamethrower and Ice Beam are good coverage options here to OHKO Zygarde and deal good chip damage against stuff like Kommo-O and M Latias, alongside bulky Steels such as M Metagross. Genesect also conveniently checks Tyranitar, which could be very annoying for this team to face if positioned well.

I've been wanting to find a new niche for Aegislash for a while, and this team seemed like a good canvas to try it out.

Aegislash @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Flash Cannon
- Toxic
- King's Shield

Here were my observations that lead me to believe Aegislash was the right pick:
  • The first thing I noticed about Yoda's team was that it had three Pokemon weak to Ice-type attacks (including two 4x weak mons) and only Volcanion to switch in on them. Kyurem-B in particular seemed hard to take down (especially since his Salamence isn't packing Draco Meteor) so I knew a Steel-type was the right call for the last slot.

  • I also didn't like Roar Volcanion being Yoda's only Trick Room check, as it makes his team quite vulnerable to hard TR teams that follow the "Fake Out + multiple TR setter" formula.

  • Another observation I had was that Calm Mind Psychic-type wincons like seed-boosted Cresselia or Mega Latias could be scary for this team, and these have been growing in popularity recently. Similarly, Chansey is a bit annoying for this team, even though Yoda does have some good techs like SD Bulu and Knock Off Lando to help that matchup.

  • Finally, Yoda hadn't yet put a Z crystal on his team, so I wanted the sixth slot to be able to make good use of one.
This is where Aegislash comes in:
  • It switches in to Kyurem-B's ice attacks nicely (including Icium Z Freeze Shock) and can OHKO offensive varieties with Never Ending Nightmare (or just Flash Cannon after Stealth Rock chip damage)

  • It helps with Trick Room because it can't be faked out, has Never Ending Nightmare for Psychic-type setters like Cresselia, as well as Flash Cannon for Diancie

  • I gave Aegislash Toxic specifically so it could be preserved to deal with late-game CM Psychics like Cresselia and M-Latias; Aegislash tanks their Psychic / Ice coverage to an extent that Aegislash can hopefully just stall out Toxic turns vs them. Similarly, Aegi can't be Toxic'd by Chansey, and Chansey usually runs Seismic Toss > Psywave now so Aegi also laughs at that matchup.

  • Aegislash makes excellent use of its Z Crystal; very little can switch in safely on strong Ghost coverage that's backed by a base 150 SpA stat in blade-forme.
The rest of Yoda's team supports Aegislash really nicely; Incineroar isn't much of a concern because Salamence, Vocanion, and Landorus-T all switch in safely on it, and even Necrozma and Bulu have coverage moves to deal with it in a pinch. Yoda's matchup vs other strong Dark-types like Hoopa-U and Tyranitar also looks pretty nice. Mega Charizard Y is a bit scary, but if you can keep Stealth Rocks up and preserve Salamence and Volcanion for the right moments, you should be able to play around it.

Cool team Yoda! I'll probably add this one into my teambuilder for future use :)

As of right now Yoda's team seems to lack a few things.

- It can't threaten out Zapdos. This is bad because the team is really slow outside of Salamence and needs to be able to maintain speed control in order to have momentum in its favor

-Kyurem-Black threatens huge damage on every pokemon bar Necrozma and only Tapu Bulu can hit it back for super effective damage.

-If Volcanion is not on the field, the team has no way to stop trick room from going up.

-Lastly, the current five members struggle to muscle through bulky psychic types such as Cresselia, Mega-Lati@s, and opposing Necrozma.

1548520525738.png

Tyranitar @ Rockium Z
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Rock Slide
- Crunch
- Taunt
- Protect
I believe this Tyranitar set provides answers to each of those problems. Z rock slide lets it do big damage to Kyurem-Black and Zapdos, taunt helps the Trick Room matchup, and stab crunch helps vs bulky psychics. Tyranitar giving the team a z crystal is also nice, but not something mandatory for the team.

The team also gives tyranitar a really nice defensive backboone with Tapu Bulu and Volcanion backed by double intimidate to fall back on. Tyranitar being the last mon does leave the team a little on the slow side, but as long as you make an effort to preserve Salamence through the midgame this shouldn't prove to be too much of an issue.

I promised Yoda that I will post on Monday.
Well its 10PM on Tuesday but whatever close enough.

1548822734321.png

probably what actually happened^

But my nomination is

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 60 SpA / 48 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Recover
- Toxic
- Icy Wind
- Thunderbolt

I probably will say stuff that people above already covered but whatever.

The team looks well balanced, but 1 thing that felt shaky was that team mostly had Mid-speed pokemon with only a non-roost Mega Salamence as speed control, which seems very easy to break through.
Another thing that a few others mentioned was the team had little to deal with bulky threats like M-Latias and Cresselia, and once Bulu was gone an opposing Chansey would become extremely tough to break.

Porygon2 was something that fulfilled all of these roles well; with access to Toxic to wear down bulky threats and not being as obvious as Chansey, and being speed control that had reliable recovery.
I debated for the longest time whether to make Porygon2's speed control Icy Wind or Trick Room, as with the number of mid-tier speed pokemon this team could adequately function as a TailRoom team, plus access to Trick Room would be a second way to check FullRoom teams.

I'm still unsure, but I ultimately went with Icy Wind, as a Porygon2 with only 1 damaging move did not feel useful at all.
Since I'm using Icy/Bolt, I stole the EVs from the EV thread and changed the SpA to 2HKO 252/0+ Fini after a SpA download. Not sure if an SpA boost will happen against a Fini, but the offensive benchmarks in the thread were not useful for this particular Porygon2 set so might as well make it benchmark something.

im surprised by how little people actually recognized metagross as a significant threat to this team. i'd make several changes like changing necrozma to z-groundium so you have the extra pressure and yache lando to alleviate the ice punch meta & zapdos matchup

id prefer running icy wind cress over necrozma anyway bc icy wind helps controlling vs seed zapdos as well and helping hand would immensely help and would suddenly make mence/volc/bulu a lot more threatening

as for the team as it currently stands i believe genone's aegislash mitigates many of the teams flaws and weaknesses despite being an absolute fucking unmon

genesect also fire tho

Abomasnow’s fallen out of style as a Trick Room mega (to the point where its now UR) given how potent Camelroom builds are these days. However, one thing Abomasnow does have going for it is better type synergy with top-tier picks like Incineroar and Tapu Fini which function quite well inside of Trick Room to begin with.

What I’ve got here is the first five Pokemon for a full Trick Room team that revolves around Abomasnow instead of Camerupt. Pretty formulaic team so far; Incineroar provides Fake Out support to help Necrozma and Diancie set Trick Room. Tapu Fini helps the matchup vs Camelroom teams, and also prevents Amoonguss from sleeping your Pokemon inside of Trick Room. Groundium Z Necrozma is just a cool mon with good overall offensive coverage, notably being able to stay in vs Incineroar. (With a Abomasnow team, the more mons that can beat Incineroar, the better.)

This team as it stands definitely struggles a bit versus strong Steel-types like Mega Scizor and Metagross, so if the sixth slot could somehow deal with that, good on you. There’s also potential to give this team Aurora Veil support, which would make the whole team more forgiving to play if executed correctly. Alternatively, you might decide that a “fast mode” Pokemon is a good pick for the sixth slot, given that mons like Incineroar and Fini don’t mind moving last in a turn to begin with and can function just fine outside of Trick Room. Definitely lots of directions you could go for the final slot here.

But what's their last?

Some weaknesses I've noticed:
* Steel-types like M-Metagross and M-Scizor (mentioned in the post)
* Volcanion
* Lack of Rock resist

Gastro provides the team with Rock resist, sturdy check to Steels like M-Metagross and M-Scizor, as well as Volcanion switch-in and additional Incineroar check. Also Gastro is slow enough to function in TR well.

It almost took me the full 24 hours but here.

Slowbro @ Wiki Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 60 Def / 196 SpA
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Fire Blast
- Trick Room
- Scald
- Psyshock

So when I was looking at this team I wanted a pokemon that
1) Offensively dealt with steel types while also resisting steel moves
2) Isn't stealth rock weak, as Mega-Aboma + Incineroar were already 2 SR rock pokemon.
3) Was not named Mega-Camerupt

I ultimately decided on Fire Blast Slowbro, which, in addition to meeting the requirements, benefits from being a third Trick Room setter and nice access to Regenerator. If regenerator is not yet revealed, it can also bluff Oblivious to avert potential Taunts as well.

Moves:
Fire Blast is the main reason for using Slowbro, and helps this team deal with Mega-Metagross and otherwise problem Pokemon such as Mega-Scizor and Genesect. Fire Blast lets Slowbro OHKO Mega-Scizor and AV Genesect (after hail damage for Gene), a benchmark which Flamethrower doesn't quite hit.
Scald and Psyshock are just STAB moves, with Psyshock over Psychic to allow Slowbro to better hit CM boosters and Chansey which could become a nuisance.

Things this Spread lives:
252+ M-Scizor Bug Bite after rocks damage
252+ +1 U-turn from Genesect after rocks damage
252+ Mega Ttar Crunch after rocks damage
8+ Leaf Blade from Berry Kartana after rocks damage
252 LO Volt Switch from Koko outside E. Terrain after rocks damage.

When I saw the team the first thing that comes into my mind to fill the 6th slot was Lando, because of several reasons:
  • No electric or ground inmunity: Lando cover both types avoiding mons like Koko or opposit Lando to spam their stabs, also taking into account that can came into a Gigavolt Havoc from Koko or Tectonic Rage from mons like Zygarde or Lando, otherwise you will not have a good switch to them.
  • Lando also helps against M-Metagross matchup, because he puts a lot of pressure on this team.
  • Acts like a great support being able to set up rocks(or defoging them in case you want your Incineroar and M-Aboma stay healthy, intimidate threats to help Diancie or Necrozma to set TR freely, or activate Diancie´s WP easily. Gives you momentum which can be important to pivot around your TR abusers. Also Lando make a great defensive core with Fini and Inci and helps them so they don´t get overloaded with defensive tasks.
I consider different sets for this team, but I chose this one over the scarf one because:
  • Outruns a lot of things in TR, being able to pick KOs easily.
  • Is able to outspeed in TR and give Volcanion OHKO after rocks damage, taking into account that Volcanion is a big threat to this team.
  • Avoids OHKO from M-Gross Ice Punch.
This my first post in the forums, looking forward to make more contributions and keep improving, hope y´all like it!

Zapdos @ Misty Seed
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 60 Def / 124 SpA / 56 SpD / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave
- Defog
- Roost

The team looks like it can find it's way around most things, but there's a lot of specific answers that require you to have very strong board positions, and I think Zapdos helps alleviate a lot of that pressure.

There's a few notable threats that worry me on first glance. Opposing Tapu Fini look especially hard to break if you're unable to get a Wood Hammer down, so Zapdos helps get good damage if your M-Abomasnow is too busy running from the partner Incin. It's also somewhat hard to switch in to the likes of Landorus-T (only Abomasnow reliably switches in on EQ/Earth Power) and Kartana, who seems to snowball really hard if it's able to snag a Beast Boost. Charizard-Y also looks like a massive pain if they're able to put Diancie into Solar Beam range, so the Misty Seed helps extend your options against Zard, as well as providing general aid vs the aforementioned Tapu Fini.

So for snake I built a really similar team (mine was these exact same 5 mons but with specs trick hp fire fini and low kick incineroar) that I didn't end up playing, and i was using scarf lando-i as my last mon so this is my nomination for this team.

The main purpose of this set is threaten some mons that could be potentially annoying in the turn you want to set up tr (metagross or taunt/z tb tapu koko are the first that come to my mind). It can also ohko some kartana sets and volcanion since this team seems to have a shaky mu vs them. For the last move I used to run uturn or rock slide, but this time I opted for toxic because in my experience a well played chansey can be a real pain when playing this team, and since genone isn't using trick on his tapu fini, toxic could beat chansey in late game. Zard seems like a more manageable threat if incineroar is healthy and diancie can always take a hit from it so you're probably not missing too much for not running rock slide.
