Why? I dunno, I lost and the endgame was a shitstorm of bad luck. But it was a decent game before then and a whole lot of people questioned almost everything I did with Jolteon. I thought it'd be cool or something to go over those plays especially and my general thought processes during the battle (well, of what I remember in hindsight anyway). It's not too long either.

team.png

Team: Raikou (Never)/ Zapdos (Forget) / Cloyster (CBB)/ Skarmory (was)/ Snorlax (6-0ed) / Jolteon (by Medicham)
Raikou: Rest / Roar / Thunder / HP Ice
Underspeeding to 320 to stay above Gengar and below other Roar Raikou at max Speed. I chose Thunder due to the highly increased power, as it OHKOs stuff with much fewer boosts. Jolteon is unfortunately pretty fragile.

Zapdos: Rest / Thunder / Sleep Talk / HP Ice
I use both legendary Electrics because they're fairly complementary defensively when choosing to whom to pass Jolteon boosts. Zapdos is better against most physical attackers, and a more dangerous sweeper in general, but Raikou is more suited to taking boosts against most special attackers.

Cloyster: Surf / Clamp / Spikes / Explosion
I built this team specifically for a boosted Zapdos or Raikou to run train through the opponent. Snorlax's job is almost solely to trade queens, but Clamp was for additional insurance Lax insurance. I don't care about Toxic since it's almost impossible to keep Spikes down against Starmie without also packing Pursuit on the team. The hazard subgame isn't that important to me anyway.

Skarmory: Rest / Curse / Whirlwind / Drill Peck
Look man, it's just the Raikou/Skarm template. Double Flyer is cool though. Obvious Lax backup, decent vs Machamp, good switch into Marowak if it gets in vs a compromised Raikou.

Snorlax: Lovely Kiss / Double-Edge / Earthquake / Selfdestruct
EQ was chosen as coverage over FB because this team couldn't give less of a fuck about Skarmory and EQ puts a stop to shit like Ttar and Gengar ruining my day.

Jolteon: Growth / Baton Pass / Tbolt / HP Water
Steelix and Rhydon are bigger nemeses than anything else, as Exeggutor or the odd other Grass-type don't pseudohaze (or OHKO Jolteon). Thunderbolt gives me one reliable damage dealer in a pinch, Jolteon shouldn't need the raw power of Thunder since the other Electrics are designed to do the heavy lifting.

I thought I needed something innovative vs BKC. I've been itching to use Counter Blissey again but since I was playing two games on the first weekend of the tourney, I didn't have time to come up with a satisfying team around that set especially when BKC was my second opponent of the day. (Jirachee would instead feel the wrath of Blissey next week.) For Round 1 pools stage of the tourney, I decided I wasn't doing any attempted scouting/counterteaming/counterstyling my opponents and just aimed to build solid teams I knew I could outplay my opponents with. I don't know how I settled on Jolteon specifically, but it's something I've been wanting to try for a long time and the team fits a general enough good template that I felt okay slotting Jolteon into the 6th.

Battle started between BKC and Mr.E!
BKC sent out BLACKED (Tyranitar)!
Go! Never (Raikou)!

Turn 1
BKC withdrew BLACKED!
BKC sent out Mjölnir (Raikou)!

Never used Thunder!
It's not very effective...
(The opposing Mjölnir lost 22.6% of its health!)
The opposing Mjölnir is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!

The opposing Mjölnir restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Lead Ttar is a weird choice.

Never used Hidden Power!
(The opposing Mjölnir lost 16.6% of its health!)

The opposing Mjölnir used Rest!
The opposing Mjölnir slept and became healthy!

I accomplished what I wanted here, forcing Raikou to Rest. At this point, I don't know if it has Roar or not which will make it the biggest wall to a Jolteon-induced sweep.

Turn 4
BKC withdrew Mjölnir!
BKC sent out personality crisis (Cloyster)!

Never, come back!
Go! 6-0ed (Snorlax)!

Turn 5
The opposing personality crisis used Spikes!
Spikes were scattered on the ground all around your team!

6-0ed used Lovely Kiss!
The opposing personality crisis fell asleep!

Good call on BKC's part I suppose, expecting something like Lax or a Ground-type to switch into Raikou and sending Cloyster pre-emptively. I choose to sleep Cloyster since attacking it isn't going to do much good anyway, my Electrics OHKO it from full. Being awake lets it chance a 30% Explosion later vs Thunder and sleeping it now allows me to keep initiative.

Turn 6
BKC withdrew personality crisis!
BKC sent out BLACKED (Tyranitar)!

6-0ed, come back!
Go! CBB (Cloyster)!

Go! Never (Raikou)!
Never is hurt by the spikes!

Never restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The opposing BLACKED restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Spikes was the right play over attacking for the KO, because Spikes at such low HP is all but a death sentence anyway and my Electrics will handle it from there regardless, but I should have just put Spikes up the first turn. That extra turn of Leftovers recovery may have kept Ttar alive for another switch-in, pending the damage rolls. I'm surprised BKC was willing to keep attacking and trade here though, especially in hindsight knowing this was both his only phazer and only Normal resist. He doesn't know what my Snorlax set is yet, a standard Curselax would've been insanely dangerous to his team... And I do, in fact, use FB Curselax probably more than any other set.

Turn 10

The opposing Mjölnir used Rest!
The opposing Mjölnir slept and became healthy!

Never restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I've been asked why I was attacking with Jolteon instead of boosting more. At this point, I know it doesn't have Roar so I'm not worried about forcing it to Rest for that reason. Remember earlier, though? Yeah... My own Raikou's at 46% after Spikes. I'm trying to force Rest so my Raikou can get in more safely, which I accomplished. That's why I shouldn't have let Raikou eat that Snorlax DE. But seriously, that crit on Jolteon kinda fucked me too though or I could've boosted further after that.

Like earlier when setting up a safer Pass to Raikou, I again pound on Raikou just long enough to force it to Rest so I can get Jolteon back in safely. Still only at 19% after Spikes, though. Thunder still KOs if he rolls it with STalk but I am likely to survive HP Ice and another Rest is HUGE.

The opposing Mjölnir woke up!
The opposing Mjölnir used Hidden Power!
(Never lost 15.9% of its health!)

Never restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Conflict at this point said I should have boosted to +3 so I could 3HKO Raikou with Hidden Power. He's not wrong, though I think it was more relevant against BKC's last. I don't know what it is yet and the difference between +2 and +3 is an OHKO or not versus many possible things. "But..." the reason I Passed early is avoiding a potential crit (or Thunder PAR) against Jolteon screwing me. Raikou is at full HP and currently on the last turn of sleep, so it's both safe from damage and PAR. Thankfully, I realized I could somewhat play around BKC's Raikou with Roar + Spikes, as the threat my Raikou poses to everything else forces his Raikou back in. Spikes gives me improved 3HKO potential while at the same time potentially threatening BKC's last and eventually sniping that Ttar.

Turn 39
The opposing Mjölnir used Hidden Power!

Never restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The opposing ThrowHimToTheFloor restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Yeah... 82-97% against Machamp at +2, see what I mean? Still, at this point there's no way I'm getting Jolteon in for another round of Passing boosts, so I just have to pray I hit and Machamp doesn't crit (or have EQ). Well, even a regular Cross Chop hit at this point might screw me since it puts Raikou low enough that BKC's own Raikou becomes a threat. Being currently ready to awaken at full HP, I'd likely have to Roar it out and then it's a couple turns of mindgames before I recover enough HP from Leftovers to tank another hit and if I Roar into an attack, or attack into Raikou switching in, I lose.

In hindsight, was it right to preserve Raikou for Zapdos? It may have been smarter to sac Raikou here to ensure Zapdos is healthy enough to tank a hit from BKC's Zapdos, giving me an advantage in the mirror since BKC's Zapdos winning the Speed tie only means he gets Rest off instead of the KO. Then again, all three Sleep Talk options are great against other Zapdos anyway and I still would've had to hit Machamp through PAR and land a Zapdos Thunder to avoid taking damage, so I think I made the right call.

Questions again from the peanut gallery: Why did I attack instead of boost here? Precisely because of what happened here: he rolled Rest and reset his sleep timer. With Raikou still paralyzed in the back I want to maximize the odds Zapdos is still asleep if it manages to take down Jolteon, so I potentially get a mulligan if I FP but Zapdos rolls Rest. Pounding away with Jolteon gives Raikou the best odds, since it forces Zapdos to Rest if it wakes up outside of KOing Jolteon range and I'm still fishing for a crit to 3HKO.

Technically a misplay, since Zapdos' health is irrelevant. He should've taken the KO on Jolteon here while he was awake, this gaurantees he 2HKOs Raikou with Hidden Power since he doesn't have to roll Sleep Talk. If I get through PAR with Raikou, I win by Resting and PP stalling him out anyway.

That said, it might've been a misclick considering he missed the correct play to attack last turn too plus his odds next turn, with another turn of Leftovers recovery under my belt, are unlikely.

Game BMs me with another crit too.

I played really damn well for WCoP and I'm very disappointed that not only did my results not bear out as expected (of the odds... it was completely expected if you're familiar with my history), but my unfortunate 1-2 record also helped spell the first-round demise of my team. :blobpensive: Still, I feel like I proved whatever anyone felt like I might've needed to prove, if you actually watch how I played versus taking results as gospel anyway, and I had fun to the point I kinda wish I could bother putting in the effort for more tournies. Probably nah though.
