Resource VGC 19 Sample Teams (pls submit)

OP stolen from Jio

Considering that VGC 19’ feature an abundance of high-stakes tournaments players are constantly testing different teams and understanding metagame trends. This thread aims to help players get an idea of how to properly team build by displaying competent and successful teams over the course of the season.

Similar to other Sample Team threads from other subforums, the teams featured here will be archived only after being approved by a variety of active and established VGC players to ensure that high-quality teams are displayed.

Of course, this thread can still be used to submit teams and I encourage anyone to do so.
  • provide an import of your team
  • provide an explanation of your team
  • provide replays/battle videos or some other form of success with the team
Happy posting!!

RayOgre with Gengar. A lot of games you will bring both Gengar and Ray as Ray functions just fine without Mega. Togedemaru for annoyance and lightning rod, supports both Gengar and Kyogre quite well. Bronzong to aid the Psychic spam match up and provide a Trick Room mode for fast teams. Thanks to skill swap, Kyogre has another way to work around opposing Groudon. Psychium Bronzong and Berry Incineroar is another option if Incinium does not look appealing, but I enjoy having the nuke for opposing Lunala and Bronzong.

Lucario shares amazing offensive synergy with both Lunala and Xerneas and has an emergency follow me option. This option offers great switch in potential in certain positions which is what makes this trio so strong. Incineroar is given next to Xerneas to Intimidate and support with Fake out, with good type match ups vs some of Xerneas' counters. Tapu Lele is the tapu as choice as a choice scarf set leads well against opposing Mega Salamence, which can otherwise be bothersome. Occa Amoonguss to give an extra out vs opposing Incineroar since Lucario is not reliable in all matchups and it is otherwise a pain.

This team obviously is quite similiar to the Lucario one. It offers a bit more depth and allows you to play a bit more defensively with Salamence being able to match Tailwind and gives double intimidate potential. Otherwise everything else is standard aside from the Amoonguss, which is Coba to aid the X-ray and Salamence match ups. Payapa is a viable option as well.

A generic Xerneas Groudon team. Salamence is the mega of choice as it can easily set up tailwind to support just about everything on this team while offering intimidate support along with Incineroar. Fini, Amoonguss, and Incineroar all pair naturally well and help support the two restricteds to out-position the opposition.

A rather standard Lunala Groudon team with Koko as the Tapu of choice as appose to Lele. Tapu Koko allows the team to effectively pivot into more optimal positions. Salamence is the mega of choice as it can easily set up tailwind to support the team while offering intimidate support along with Incineroar. The Lunala set is rather interesting as I decided to forgo Psyshock as the team already had plenty of options to deal with threats you'd normally want Psyshock for like Amoonguss, Tailwind was used to force a mindgame on the last turn of TR on whether they double protect or not- Roar is also an option to deal more consistently with Xerneas. Then you have the Standard SD Primal Groudon build and Amoonguss to provide further control with Rage Powder and doubling as a back up plan for Xerneas thanks to Clear Smog.

Fairly standard rain team, with some quirks. Peaked 1507 and won a room tour. It doesn't really revolve around any single mon, each one covers the others really well. Magic Room Lele is actually really good, not just for the purpose of wrecking Xerneas, but also lets it use it's relatively high speed now there's no scarf users. Psycho Cut on Kartana is there to deal with Venusaur and Toxicroak better, it's won me a good few games. Standard sets otherwise.

Here's a pretty standard XY core I used early format. Haven't touched it still should do it's thing. Yveltal beats a lot of Xerneas counters with foul play. Snarl gives it openings to set up. Smeargle + Xerneas will win games on its own often enough. Scarf lele lets you block priority once Xern is set up and can outspeed ScarfOgre and stop it from water spouting. Often times spamming dazzling gleam next to Xern is a win condition due to Fairy Aura. AV Kart checks Ogre and Xern.

Noted. Do you have any replays?

The trainer tower sample teams article has surpassed this thread in terms of teams, so I thought could change this up a bit. Instead of teams from top cut events and already accomplished players, this thread will be sample teams from smogon users, things that you yourselves come up with, be it on showdown, or just teams you particularly enjoy using. That should breathe some life into this thread.

This is a team I have been using on showdown with moderately good results.

theres ddance zygarde with aura break to neuter xerneas for teammates (it still cant take +2 moonblast) and cripple yveltal, wide guard solgaleo to have a check to blades and spout spammers, support koko to remove threats temporarily with sky drop and speed control with electroweb, ludicolo as a fake out user and another groudon/kyogre counter, tw whirlwind volc for more support and another check to setup users like xern (again) and lastly scrafty as an intimidate user (not incineroar as the team is generally weak to ground and groudon). scrafty also provides snarl support, a second fake out, a lunala check and item removal. for the evs, zygarde takes non-mystic water modest water spout ogre and outspeeds koko after a ddance, solgaleo koes no bulk xern, koko also takes water spout fromthe same set as what zygarde takes, survives max attack toxicroak poison jab and outspeeds kartana, ludicolo outspeeds timid kyogre in rain and survives yveltal oblivion wing(non life orb), volcarona just outspeeds base 90s like groudon and has max sp.atk to deal as much damage as possible with dual stab, and scrafty gets 4hkoed by life orb max attack groudon p-blades after an intimidate with berry recovery, takes reshiram blue flare in sun(had no other switchins to it really, and i can snarl to neuter it a little)

What’s the rationale behind using Expert Belt on Solgaleo instead of a Life Orb? Seems like a wasted item slot to me, when the coverage is so poor with the two attacks, you’re not getting many super effective attacks and actually benefitting from Expert Belt.

there have been situations when I survive an attack but die to life orb recoil when I need it alive... (the original team used life orb) it's there just to ohko no bulk xerneas tbh and offers support in wide guard. but yea, life orb is generally better I just don't really like losing hp

Not the best but lets you get a feel for the team

Started with kyogre because it seemed that it would be the core of the meta with solid matchups. I ran specs because I wanted that extra power creep on others dealing massive damage with thunder. I chose Necrozma over ferro as a Xerneas killer because it has significant bulk to pair with weakness policy to help with bad matchups. I then added rotom because i needed a special attacking fire type and couldn’t find a better option (I could really use one). Bulu is basically made to outspeed ogre and OHKO, also helps with terrain control and weakening earthquakes towards necrozma. Gastro was meant to also slow down ogre and basically be a speacial wall and stop opponents from boost. Also speed control. Persian is basically for fast fake out and a bit of taunt support.

Problems: rotom is kinda trash. I dont think I really need swords dance on necro., and its kinda slow. None of my sets are very good.

heres some replays to show how I have been playing it, its pretty straightforward. usual brings and tsareena kyogre and rayquaza, with fourth being situational. usually leading kyogre and rayquaza or tsareena. rayquaza survives most things because of the assault vest, including moonblast from xerneas before geomancy and ice beam from kyogre without specs.

this is an example of a really smooth match, I noticed in team preview my opponent had no answers to a kyogre tsareena lead, I did take a risk on koko not being sashed but it pays off any kyogre tsareena just wins the game.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7vgc2019sunseries-831836880

A more drawn out battle vs a kyogre tornadus leading team, able to play around the lead because they were unsure about rayquaza's set and played very cautiously on turn one.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7vgc2019sunseries-831744338

this shows a more drawn out battle where my opponent definitely predicted my early plays right, but the battle was able to be brought back by tsareena and incineroar putting in strong performances.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7vgc2019sunseries-831741180

here's another drawn out game that really shows tsareena and koko putting in work, and shows how the team can function without needing kyogre to carry the team.

The usual goal is to set up tailwind for kyogre to spam water spout. Yveltal+Gengar is my most common lead against Xerneas+Incineroar leads without Tornadus. Icy Wind+Tailwind would be the best play there. If Yveltal gets knocked out, you get to water spout with ogre for free even if Groudon is in the back as specs ogre still punches a hole in the bulkiest ones. If Xerneas protects, knock off takes away its herb provided it doesn't switch out which removes a lot of pressure and the opponent usually likes to pick off the weakened gengar from knock off last turn.
Against Torn+Incineroar leads, two options are possible. Either lead Yveltal+Ogre or Ferro+Incineroar. The latter is better if it's a best of 3 set but Yveltal+ogre can put the pressure turn 1. Of course fake out+tailwind is possible from the opponent's side but you can match tailwind. If the opponent doesn't go for tailwind and does it next turn, you still get spout off.
For Koko kyogre teams, lead Yveltal+Incineroar with Lele in the back and fake out Koko. If the partner is a tailwind user like kartana, match tailwinds, if the partner is lunala, knock it off. Even if it's colbur berry and it sets trick room, if you brought ferrothorn it's not a big problem.
For most other matchups, just lead gengar/Yveltal, it usually gets the job done excluding Koko as if speed control isn't set up, Koko especially the specs variant runs through the team.
For the ev spreads, kyogre survives +2 timid Xerneas moonbladt, Yveltal survives modest ogre spout, I copied leles spread from pikalytics, Incineroar survives life orb Groudon precise blades at -1 and outspeeds Xerneas in tailwind to knock it off, gengar is vanilla 252/252/4 and ferrothorn ohkoes no bulk ogre.

Wanted to go ahead and share one of my favorite archetypes going into Ultra Series LunaDon:

Got a sample team from one of my players on my NPA team, LegacyVGC. Very solid Dual Primal Team with double mega as well as Malicious Moonsault Incineroar to be able to take out threats such as Mega Gengar, Ultra Necrozma, and Lunala.
