Tiering for BDSP

Hello everyone. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will be releasing in about one week from the time of this post, and as such people are naturally curious about how Smogon will be handling the games from a tiering perspective.

First off, I feel it's important to say that SS OU will still be Smogon's official OU metagame. This means that our official tournaments will still be played on SS OU, and in terms of the Tiering Contributor badge, BDSP tiers will only count towards the 10 vote threshold.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let's get to the specifics:

BDSP OU will start with all Pokemon obtainable in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl legal, with the exception of all box legendary Pokemon, like Mewtwo and Giratina, and will be tiered appropriately by a council once the metagame is officially playable. The tier will be available to play after the games' official release. Note that any Pokemon not available in the actual games will be considered "unreleased", and won't be allowed in any tiers until they make their way into the games.

In terms of tiers lower than OU, for the time being it is only planned for BDSP UU to exist. Like tiering for Sword and Shield, BDSP tiers will use the 4.52% cutoff when it comes to determining the cutoff for usage-based tiers. The tier will go live some time in early 2022, though we feel it important to focus our efforts on establishing an OU community first. In addition, a tier above OU will also be available, though at this time it is still being discussed whether the format should be an Ubers-based or Anything Goes-based metagame.

Other tiers such as Doubles, LC, or OMs will have BDSP metagames available at the discretion of the respective Tier Leadership. Please message me if you have any questions, thank you!

While we are minimizing initial Pokemon bans, the preliminary council did vote on a few other things before the metagame's official release, primarily focused on competitiveness. The results of the ban slate are as follows:

All three trapping abilities were voted on, with Shadow Tag and Arena Trap receiving a unanimous ban vote while Magnet Pull was decidedly not banned.

Baton Pass can be described as similarly uncompetitive, as it takes a lot of the dynamic strategy out of the game and turns it into a one-sided attempt to complete a chain. As such, and to follow in line with modern OUs, it was brought up on the slate, and banned without hesitation.

King's Rock and Razor Fang, as well as Moody were also banned to remove some heavily luck based elements from the tier ahead of time.

The preliminary council will be keeping an eye out for other potentially broken elements upon the metagame's release, but we hope that by publishing this information ahead of time, you can get started on planning your teams and looking forward to an exciting new metagame!

This should be it from us until BDSP OU's official release. Please message me if you have any questions and I hope to see you all loading up some games, especially for the newly announced Smogon Charity Bowl II!
