The Next Best Thing is a project where the users can submit & search for various creative but viable Pokemon sets, utilising the power of various underlooked & unexpected moves/items, or a combination of both in a set.

Here, you'll find many sets that might seem vague, but in reality carves out a niche in this metagame. These sets are excellent at acting as a surprise factor, which can totally change the the match.

You may also find how potent a Pokemon can be by looking, playing & even creating some out-of-the-box sets, that are definitely unworthy at first sight.

The sets here posted should obviously be viable, avoiding jokes such as Choice Band Blissey that can't be taken serious. Posting meme sets will also drive the host crazy.

Before submitting any set, you must read the Procedures, Rules & Regulations of the forum.

  • Every cycle (1 per week), a new Pokemon will be chosen for participants to create a new, creative yet effective sets.
  • All the existing sets (or WIPs) on the Smogdex are disallowed.
  • The participants will get 4 days to submit their sets in this forum.
  • Voting will be held during the last three days of the week.
  • All the winning sets will be kept in the Hall of Fame (see next reply).

  • Be as creative as possible, but your creativity must also show some viability.
  • You may only post 1 set per cycle.
  • You are not allowed to take sets from Smogdex & WIPs.
  • Making some minor changes in the existing sets of Smogdex won't work.
  • Set explanation is a must.
  • Be detailed with your sets & replies as much as you can. You may (please) include Replies, teammates options, threats, usage tips, & even a team built around the set.
  • You are free to discuss others' sets in the Submission time, but can't discuss set after the voting begins.
  • You are allowed to suggest potential changes in others' sets, if it doesn't bother him/her.
  • You are allowed to reserve your set in this forum (not suggested though), but the reservation won't last more than 24 hours. If so, your reservation will be denied & others will get the chance to copy your set (so don't lose the opportunity).
  • Please name your sets based on the moves & items, & not random funny names.
  • You aren't allowed to copy anyone else's set, not even the reserved ones.
  • It is illegal to post illegal sets. If found doing such illegal stuff, you'll be declared illegal from this very Legal forum.
  • You are allowed to change your set before the Voting begins (though this may create confusions & isn't recommended).
  • You can't vote for your own set.
  • Creating new accounts to vote, manipulating others to vote your sets & other such tricks are strictly forbidden. If found, you'll be banned from posting here.
  • Try to avoid double-posting.
  • If you have any queries regarding this post, prefer asking me personally through Conversations or Profile Posts. Avoid asking questions on this forum.
  • Follow the Forum Rules & be polite with other members here.
  • At last, the most important rule. Just Have Fun :quagchamppogsire:

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

- Rapid Spin / Ice Spinner

Choice Scarf Tusk has been a good option for surprise revenge killing and picking off frailer teams for a bit now; it most definitely deserves more love than it gets. Being able to outrun Cinderace, Dragapult, Greninja, and other fast Pokémon without a boost can go a long way. You can bluff Eject Pack, Choice Band, or other items that aren’t Leftovers initially as well, which makes it harder to play around. It also is a solid enough revenge killer and still generally threatening with dual STAB like any offensive Great Tusk. Only drawback is it’s harder to fit on teams and doesn’t last as long against things like Kingambit.

Defense and Special defense EVs can be swapped.

After months of SV OU we all know one of great tusk’s biggest flaws: longevity. It has no reliable recovery. So, some people use leftovers, but even that can be overwhelmed by hitting it and switching out into a tusk counter. To make things worse, the 2 most common wishpassers, :scream tail: and :alomomola: are restricted to certain archetypes (sun and stall respectively). This is why Chesto Rest tusk works. It can rest once and be able to check more threats many times, even after burning the chesto Berry you can still rest to reset status (especially poison) and regain HP while checking a weak threat. Otherwise, think this as a modification of standard defensive tusk.

Fairy Tusk

Great Tusk @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Play Rough
- Bulk Up
- Rapid Spin

I really like this set, play rough as coverage is very good over knock off allowing you in 1 move to hit super effectively dragons like Dragonite, Baxcalibur, Hydreigon and Dragapult, it hits opposing tusks very strong, Walking Wake for a kill, Iron Valiant and many more targets.
Fairy type defensively has a ton of utilities and its very difficult to stop a setup sweeper with tusks stats and fairy typing as it now has a dragon immunity, ice water grass neutrality, flying neutrality against corviknight, fairy psychic neutrality vs hatterene and more. Finally one key trait of this set, u dont need to invest your tera on him. Using play rough on its own with the max atk investment can do the work in many situations, fairy tera however makes the sweep potential alot more possible and allows many trades like vs dragapult's draco. Used this set in SPL and OST https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen9ou-674369 and in a good amount of teams that u maybe already have knock off utility with meowscarada or value the more offensive tusk set its a very good alternative.

There is only one Tusk set (EV Spread + 4 Moves) that I consider optimal for the Meta, so the first Mon might not be the right one for this thread, but here is my take:

Great Tusk @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 60 HP / 196 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Taunt
- Steath Rock
- Rapid Spin / Knock Off / Heavy Slam
- Close Combat / Headlong Rush

WHY THE HELL THIS DUMB ELEPHAN LEARNS TAUNT? Really, in my ideal Meta I would Dexit this Move the first or make it very low distribution one. This Great Tusk works as a suicide lead that puts Rocks and prevents the opponent from doing the same.
Booster Energy always boosts Speed.
EVs are for this:
252+ SpA Life Orb Garchomp Draco Meteor vs. 64 HP / 192 SpD Great Tusk: 273-321 (70.5 - 82.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Great Tusk is the one common Rocker that outspeeds Tusk (except its not, since we have Booster Energy boost, but there might be Webs in play and for some reason we didn,t send Tusk before the Webs are in play), so these EVs guarantee Tusk will survive DM and won,t die from Rough Skin after spinning the opposing Rocks.

Spin is actually not mandatory on this set, since Taunt prevents opposing Rocks, but might still come handy if the opponent leads with another Booster Energy Tusk or a Sandy Shocks. Knock Off is another option, since its a broken move. Heavy Slam if run is just for Hatterene, otherwise it switches in very easily and will ruin the fun.
CC is the better STAB if only one is run, but has the problem of not being able to hit Ghosts without Knock, so Headlong Rush is another option. It also hits Hatterene harder.

Tera Ghost in case we are desperate to maintain the Rocks on the field.

Of course, this Tusk is only to be ran in HO, which isn,t a big problem, since its the dominating playstyle. If alongside this Tusk you don,t run Spikes, Gholdengo is not needed as teammate, since you will Taunt the Corviknight.

I like this. I'm about this.

NO SUCKER PUNCH (Please)

Weak to Priority (Great Tusk) @ Leftovers/ Focus Sash
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rapid Spin/ Rest
- Endeavor
- Close Combat
- Headlong Rush

The idea with this Tusk is to deal damage, remove hazards, and then kamikaze the opponent.

It's a very simple and standard Tusk set. You remove hazards, maybe you stay in, maybe you switch out. Do some damage with close combat and headlonging rush, you know the deal.

HOWEVER!

Once your back is against the wall, you whip out the 'NO U' and take someone out with you. Granted, this set is severely helped by already having a +1 to your speed with rapid spin and is very weak to priority moves. But, it's the surprise no one wanted and no one knew would happen.

Endeavor brings your opponent down to your hp. So let's say you're weak and battered... Low hp. You endeavor and set up your next mon for the perfect revenge kill. OR, even better, you endeavor on a switch, crippling the next mon and allowing you the potential KO yourself (works well on bulky walls, for instance). This also helps take out annoying stall mons who are easy to predict. And since you're faster most of the time anyway, an endeavor into one of your strong moves only spells disaster for whoever you're up against.

There is also the option to endeavor rest to bring your opponent down and heal yourself. And tera ghost is for extreme speed.

I mean, all in all, there isn't much with Tusk that hasn't been done or discussed. But I hope you've enjoyed my fun set :)

CHESTOREST :great-tusk:
Great Tusk @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fighting / Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Earthquake / Headlong Rush/ Knock Off
- Close Combat / Stealth Rock
- Rest
- Rapid Spin / Stealth Rock

I think you should run an impish nature. Bold decreases physical attack in exchange for physical defense.

SubBU Great Tusk

Fleetwood Mac (Great Tusk) @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Poison / Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 8 Atk / 208 Def / 40 Spe
Impish Nature
- Substitute
- Bulk Up
- Earthquake
- Close Combat / Knock Off / Tera Blast

Substitute + Bulk Up Great Tusk is a silly little guy who, with Tera, can find many opportunities to set up and wreak havoc against fatter teams. The EVs let it outspeed Iron Hands and Max Speed Kingambit (even if it’s much less common than other sets, still nice to have), while the Defense lets Substitute survive two unboosted Iron Heads.

First three slots explain themselves. Knock Off ensures that Great Tusk can make progress, scaring out Pokemon like Dragapult that could otherwise thwart it. Tera Blast, with Tera Grass, lets Great Tusk hit Dondozo harder than anything else it can do. Tera Poison secures Great Tusk against stuff like Iron Valiant and Scream Tail, while Tera Grass helps against stuff like Breloom, Dondozo, and Azumarill.

Rollout

Great Tusk @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Rock
EVs: 252 Atk / 204 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bulk Up
- Rapid Spin
- Rollout
- Substitute

Not sure what this set is supposed to do but it was used in SPL so it must be good. Presumably you sub then bulk up then tera and rollout and win. Unfortunately, there is no documented evidence, since when it was used, the opponent FFed just before it was about to sweep. That should be a testament to the sheer terror this set can inflict.

Get sub up on a switch, wreak havoc. Amoonguss hates this. Works well with sun but honestly Tusk is so good you dont need it

:Great Tusk: Eject Pack Great Tusk

Great Tusk @ Eject Pack
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Headlong Rush
- Rapid Spin
- Endeavor

This set is really a linear, but effective one because it is a classic offensive set (that requires Sun support to work at 100% efficiency) with two 120-STAB base power moves that drops our defenses immediately after its attack. Great Tusk is not the fastest monster, but a set with 252 Spe+ EVs can outspeed some threats, especially after a +1 Spe from Rapid Spin. This detrimental effect affects badly the staying power of our beloved Great Tusk, which uses Eject Pack to keep the momentum in our favour, although once, after using a high-powered move or after a drop from Intimidate.
The loss of HDB/Leftovers is mitigated somehow with the use of Endeavor, so you can make good use of the chip damage taken throughout the switch-ins.

Sun setter

Great Tusk @ Heat Rock
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Sunny Day
- Body Press
- Knock Off/Earthquake
- Rapid Spin/ Stealth Rock

Are you sick of trying to use Torkoal? Wouldn't you rather compress that role into The Best Pokemon In OU (by usage)?
Well then treat yourself to some Great Sun! Sunny Day Protoboost on Defense is more than a single BU, and also provides utility to other Protomons.
Other moves are flexible based on what best fits your team's needs. Can also be paired with Torkoal as a backup sun setter.
4 speed is just to be slightly faster than Defensive tusks.
Heat Rock does exactly what it always does, so no explanation needed there!
Tera fighting boosts Body Press damage even higher, but other tera options are also available for team preference/necessity.

I don't remember if Tera Flying is still a really common option on Kingambit (and to a lesser extent Gholdengo), but IMO a problem that I'd notice when running Bulk Up on fat Tusks with Spin was that anything that was a Flying type (whether Tera or naturally) could sit on me pretty easily, especially since Knock Off was a common utility move on fat Tusks with Spin. Tera Flying Kingambit could easily be very scary because if it's lost its item beforehand (especially if it's something like Lum), defensive Tusk with no Attack investment can barely touch it even after a Bulk Up.

Rollout gets to 120 BP on the 3rd hit, and can double 2x more, so it can break through things like Corviknight easier as well.
