The Next Best Thing

What is this?:
The Next Best Thing is a project where the community digs through a featured Pokemon's movepool and crafts novel sets under the objective of beating some of its common checks and counters. Through this project in the past, relatively hidden Pokemon sets between ADV and BW like SD Lucario in DPP OU or Sub-Disable Gengar in BW OU have ended up taking the respective metagames by storm. Not every set that the community comes up in the project with will become metagame defining, however. In fact, a mass majority of new Pokemon sets made here won't end up becoming very popular in the end, which is fine.

The Process:
Each 10 days, I will choose a different RU Pokemon, sometimes chosen by random, sometimes chosen by curiosity, of which participants will try to personally create a new set for that is not already on-site or in the process of being put on-site. Participants will be given 7 days to create their set, with discussion about the particular sets being promoted throughout, and on the 8th through 10th day of the cycle, a vote will be held to choose which user's set represented the most creative and simultaneously competitively viable set to utilize in the current RU metagame. Once the votes are tallied and a winner is crowned, the set will be archived in the OP and the process will start all over again for the next Pokemon specimen.

What are we looking for?:
Specifically, I want to stress the importance of the balance between creativity and viability when picking a set to post for the Pokemon in question. There's a very fine line between a "creative" set and a "gimmick", and this project is not meant to produce gimmicks, rather emphasize the ability to think outside the box when using a specific Pokemon in order to maximize its potential. Having said that, I would also like to deviate from simple one move / item changes. For example, using Life Orb over Lum Berry on a Swords Dance Virizion does nothing to show any untapped potential Virizion has because we already have a basic understanding of what Swords Dance Virizion is and does; it just now has more power at the cost of dealing with status. The same would go for using Zen Headbutt over Stone Edge. Neither of the aforementioned cases yield productive discussion or results for the project. I am looking for sets that test what we think we know about checks or counters, so-called standards, and what it means to be viable. Maybe a particular option for a Pokemon looks inferior at first glance for that particular Pokemon, but dig deeper and try and find what it might mean in the big picture, for the entire team.

Rules:
  • Make sure you can prove that your set stands apart from the standards, but don't use gimmicks that have no business being used in the RarelyUsed tier.
  • Please do not change your sets after they have been posted
  • Reserving sets is PROHIBITED

Banned deucer.
Do try and pick a Pokemon that's been a consistent mainstay in the tier next time. Slowking, while not "new" to RU per say, is very new to this meta, so it's hard to pick a creative set that wouldn't just be deemed standard by the next few weeks or so. In other words, this kind of thread is created when the tier gets stale and you want people to come up with new stuff, it's counter-intuitive when you're picking a newish Pokemon as the subject in question when people are still figuring out what sets are most effective or standard, lol.

Rest Trick Room Trevenant
Trevenant @ Lum Berry
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Def / 64 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Rest
- Trick Room
- Will-O-Wisp
- Phantom Force

Wanting to think out of the box a little (that is what this thread is about), I chose to pick Rest Trick Room Trevenant as the "next best thing". Trevenant has something that most TR setters don't have: A one turn healing move (Aromatisse's wish takes two turns technically), and access to a great status move in WoW. Not wanting to have it completely weak to one type of attack, I made it a mixed wall. Leech Seed is there for some sort of recovery because Trevenant has no recovery outside of rest.
Well that's all
Cheers!

I've basically used this thing (except it was a pumpkaboo) in any Trick Room team ever built for RU or UU. It catches a lot of people off guard since they don't know what fear ghost types do. This basically allows for the maximum amount of Trick Room turns and gets a kill on something. if the opponent decides to switch out then give them a status affect or preserve the focus sash and switch out. It makes for an excellent lead and usually applies pressure right away if executed properly. Shadow Sneak can also be used to kill a pokemon brought down to its Focus Sash and for you to say, "lol you got killed by a lvl 1 Trevenant"

Check and Counters
Xatu -
You can't status it so you either have to look like an idiot and click Leech Seed (which makes you look suspicious) or reveal you have destiny bond. Of course this only applies if Xatu switches into it first turn when Trick Room is set up.
Any Priority except Quick Attack, Sucker Punch, Extremespeed - self explanatory
Taunt Leads - basically you can't trick room and then Destiny Bond
People who don't fear fear - either that or they don't know what it is. These people are usually the ones you sacrifice Qwilfish and Omastar turn 1 no matter what.

Other than that it is pretty cool

Edit: I forgot to name the set, just call it FEAR Trevenant

Trevenant @ Salac Berry
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Horn Leech
- Shadow Claw
- Rock Slide / Hone Claws

Sub Salac Trevenant is something that offensive teams might like. It compress a spinblocker and a late game cleaner in a single set. Sub helps to avoid status and it can be setup on weaker attacks like mola's scald. Hone Claws can help to alleviate his low power, although Rock Slide adds nice coverage :) Also harvest can a second salac in order to get a second boost and being much faster, so he will be capable to outspeed the likes of Durant/Virizion/Jolteon, which are faster even at +1, sadly

Trevenant @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 Spe
Impish Nature
- Horn Leech / Drain Punch
- Rest
- Will-O-Wisp
- Trick

This set is designed to take advantage of Trevenant's unique combination of Trick + Natural Cure. 80 Speed lets it outspeed 44 Speed Jellicent (though you may want to creep a bit too). The rest I put into HP and Def for extra bulk and to help it survive against Pursuit. Tricking a Toxic Orb is a neat way of breaking down defensive mons, especially those with cleric support. Clerics themselves might be my favorite targets since losing Leftovers, or Eviolite in Togetic's case, and having status that keeps coming back really helps to break them down. Horn Leech is nice for applying pressure to Water-types, though Drain Punch is a cool option for taking out Pursuit trappers since it OHKOes Sneasel and Houndoom after Stealth Rock damage. Rest with Natural Cure is nice since it'll be healed of sleep upon switching out.

There are also a lot of creative things you can do with Trick that might surprise your opponent. Tricking a Toxic Orb on Fletchinder neuters it for the rest of the match. Tricking Toxic Orb to Flame Orb Sigilyph lets Mega Steelix have a way easier time killing it. This set's terrible against Mega Camerupt, but it's otherwise pretty neat. I just wish Trev had better defenses to pull it off better. :/

Trevenant (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 180 HP / 252 Atk / 76 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Horn Leech / Wood Hammer
- Shadow Claw
- Will-O-Wisp
- Rest

This set attempts to blend Trevenant's offensive power and Natural Cure ability into more of an offensive utility set. Thanks to Natural Cure, Trevenant doesn't fear Scald burns nearly as much as other Grass-type Pokemon. Horn Leech is the main Grass-type STAB option thanks to decent power and the ability to recover HP at the same time. Shadow Claw is the most reliable Ghost-type STAB move Trevenant has and is nice to hit Grass- and Steel-types with. Will-O-Wisp spreads burns across the opposing team and can be quite annoying to deal with as most opponents will rely on Grass-types and physical walls to handle Trevenant after seeing Life Orb recoil. Rest is used in the last slot as it takes advantage of Trevenant's access to Natural Cure by restoring HP instantly. Having to immediately switch out can be a little annoying, so make sure you have the appropriate defensive support to ensure your opponent has a hard time taking advantage of this. The EVs outspeed Alomomola and everything below while giving Trevenant decent bulk and the highest Attack stat possible. Life Orb is used to switch moves and Rest + Horn Leech help to offset the recoil. Wood Hammer can be used over Horn Leech as a Grass-type STAB move with much more power, but the recoil incurred from both Life Orb and Wood Hammer can often times prove to be too much to handle. You could also run Earthquake over a STAB move to keep from being complete Houndoom bait.

That TrickOrb set looks fun tho...

Delphox @ Flame Orb
Ability: Magician
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Fire Blast
- Psyshock / Dazzling Gleam
- Grass Knot

Can cripple usual switchins like Alomomola, Flygon and Slowking by Tricking them a Flame Orb, getting rid of their leftovers and causing residual damage. This means CM Slowking can't switch into predicted Grass Knots anymore, as it now 2HKO's with rocks up:

252 SpA Delphox Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 248 HP / 4 SpD Slowking: 146-174 (37.1 - 44.2%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and burn damage

Flygon will also be heavily pressured to keep rocks off the field because it has to roost more often with its leftovers gone and a burn pretty much giving a free switch into your rocker to set them up again or your wallbreaker(Aboma, Durant etc.)

Offensive checks that try to tank one move like Tyrantrum will also be rendered almost completely useless as it loses its scarf and is burned.

Delphox @ Power Herb
Ability: Magician
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Psyshock
- Solar Beam
- Dazzling Gleam / Will-o-Wisp

This set while not particularly new I feel a lot of people play wrong or not to its fullest
The basic jist of this set is to use Power + Solar Beam to deal damage and steal the opponents item all in the one.
Delphox isn't used just to hit a water type and steal its item. It has the versatility to the steal Life Orb from Sneasel or Eviolite from Golbat. Delphox isn't a no item type of pokemon type Fletchinder and Hitmonlee so people can be more patient and use it at the right time. Also well Delphox uses Magician, if it gets Knocked Off it can punish the opponent my stealing its item.
Will-o-Wisp can be for crippling pokemon like Banette and Mega Steelix whos items can not be stolen.
Dazzling Gleam hits Scrafty and Spiritomb.

Delphox @ Leftovers
Ability: Magician
EVs: 24 HP / 252 SpA / 232 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
- Grass Knot

CM + 3 Attacks Delphox! The idea here is to send Delphox in on something that doesn't want to take a fire attack, like Escavalier or Abomasnow, to force a switch, and set up a Calm Mind to boost your special attack and special defence. Then from there, the combination of Shadow Ball/Flamethrower/Grass knot has perfect neutral coverage, allowing you to blast whatever's in your way!
