The Next Best Thing [Current Subject: Tapu Bulu]

Congratulations to Darkinium for winning this week's Next Best Thing! Your submission will be logged in the Archive!
This week's subject is a strong independent single mom who don't need no man: Mega Kangaskhan! While it's not as strong as it was in gen 6, Kang is still a pretty powerful mon that can deal a ton of damage and sweep unprepared teams. So, with all that in mind, what is The Next Best Thing (TM) for Mega Kangaskhan?

You have until Thursday (4/26) at 9:00 p.m. EST (GMT-5) to post your submissions. Best of luck to everyone!

Going to be dropping mixed, my apologies.

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Disable

- Return
- Fire Punch

The basis of this set is the ability to exploit both Choice users such as Tapu Lele, as well as Pokemon that often rely on a sole attacking move, such as Celesteela and Ferrothorn. Return is used over Double-Edge as the latter will greatly wear you down in conjunction with Substitute. If you like, Substitute can be dropped for more coverage or priority, but it's nice to dodge Leech Seeds from Celesteela and Ferrothorn and essentially forcing them into attacking with their only offensive move before Disabling it.

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Atk / 28 Def / 84 SpA / 4 Spe
Lonely Nature
- Stomp
- Icy Wind
- Flamethrower
- Fake Out / Thunderbolt / Shadow Ball / Earthquake / Sucker Punch / Drain Punch

tank hits, slow things down with Icy Wind (way better than Rock Tomb because it also mishes Mence and Lando) then flinch them to death.

The EVs let you live a +1 Return from offensive Mence, 2HKO Lefties Skarm, rest in attack.

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 8 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Double-Edge / Facade / Fire Punch / Earthquake
- Power-Up Punch / Fire Punch / Earthquake
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Kang has some decent bulk, so it can pull off a rest-talk set that is sure to surprise your opponent. You can use pretty much any damaging moves you want, but Double Edge plus PuP is probably the most consistent.

Submissions are now closed! There are to be no edits of your own Pokemon, nor are there to be any new submissions. A few quick things to note;

cant' say's mixed Kangaskhan

Not joking but I had a mixed set with double edge / fire blast / ice beam / sucker punch late ORAS. This one looks like better alternative, honestly.

Mega Kangaskhan's unexpectedly nice bulk pairs quite well with this, and can even function as a Cro-sweeper of sorts with PuP.

This week's subject turns up the heat, it's none other than the lava dome pokemon: Heatran! Heatran shines in battle spot thanks to its strong typing and all round solid stats, which lets it function as both an offensive and defensive threat. So, with all that in mind, what is The Next Best Thing (TM) for Heatran?

You have until Thursday (5/3) at 9:00 p.m. EST (GMT-5) to post your submissions. Best of luck to everyone!

Heatran @ Grassium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Lava Plume / basically any relevant Fire move you want
- Rock Tomb / Earth power
- Solar Beam

I am honestly surprised how underrated Grassium Z Heatran is. It does excellent job luring Tapu Fini and Primarina as well as deleting any Hippowdon that doesn't run max SpDef spread. 204 Speed is an option to outspeed everything up to Adamant Breloom.

252 SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Fini: 174-206 (98.8 - 117%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Primarina: 192-226 (102.6 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Suicune: 192-228 (92.7 - 110.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Hippowdon: 192-226 (89.3 - 105.1%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon

Originally intended to pair Air Balloon with Will-O-Wisp but turns out that you beat most Earthquake users with HP Ice anyways, oops. Anyways, goal is, simply, avoid an Earthquake from Pokemon such as AV Landorus-T, Mega Salamence, and Mega Kangaskhan with the Air Balloon and fire off an HP Ice or Fire Blast. Air Balloon and HP Ice sit at a modest (no pun intended) 10 and 8% usage, respectively, so uncommon enough to not be the current "Best Thing", imo.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Spe / 12 SpA
Timid Nature
- Flamethrower
- Toxic
- Will-O-Wisp
- Earth Power / Protect / Stealth Rock

When I run Toxic, I face nothing but HO. When I run WoW, I face nothing but stall. Fuck it, let's run both!

I know that dual status sets are something of a relic, but I really like the role compression they offer to space-strapped BSS teams, and Heatran's prodigious typing, moveslot freedom and general Heatranness make it one of the top options. Not to mention the look on your opponent's face when you reveal Toxic, they think the coast is clear for their Garchomp or SD Lando, and they eat a burn on the switch. >P

EDIT: Oops, I copy-pasted my Lvl 100 spread and forgot to change it to Lvl 50. Again. Thanks for the heads-up. ^^;

Don't run 248 EVs on anything at lv50 since that gives the same final stat as 244 EVs, thereby wasting 4 EVs. You could probably get away with just having 252 in there but if you really want an odd number stick to 244

Heatran @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 76 SpA
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Shuca Berry Heatran can survive some interesting attacks but needs to have rocks up to get most of its OHKOs and 2HKOs. It also has a chance to survive choice band Tapu Bulu's Superpower.

Survives-
0 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 180 Def Shuca Berry Heatran: 102-120 (51.5 - 60.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

One of my favourite Heatran sets is the following:

Heatran @ Normalium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
Level: 50
EVs: 116 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 132 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nature Power
- Earth Power
- Lava Plume
- Explosion/Hyper Beam/Flash Cannon/Hp Ice/Rocks

EVs: 132 speed is to hit 114 speed, max SpA and rest in HP. You can run max speed too though.

I love Z-Nature power as a tech as it's underrated and unexpected. It gives heatran access to moves that it would not otherwise be able to use: moonblast, psychic, thunderbolt and energy ball.

I generally like running this heatran on a team with multiple tapus, so you can take advantage of multiple terrain types and bait in pokemon that otherwise deal with tran. The main ones I prefer using with tran are grassy, misty and psychic terrain.

Z-Nature power turns into the corresponding Z-Move depending on the terrain of the tapu, leading to some really interesting calcs where Tran can surprise pokemon that it may not otherwise be able to handle.

Under Misty Terrain:

252+ SpA Heatran Twinkle Tackle (175 BP) vs. 212 HP / 156 SpD Salamence-Mega: 204-240 (103.5 - 121.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Twinkle Tackle (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 124-148 (59.9 - 71.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Under Grassy Terrain

252+ SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (175 BP) vs. 228 HP / 220+ SpD Hippowdon: 200-236 (94.3 - 111.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (175 BP) vs. 228 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 286-338 (134.9 - 159.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tapu Fini: 174-206 (98.3 - 116.3%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO

Under Psychic Terrain

252+ SpA Heatran Shattered Psyche (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 190-224 (101.6 - 119.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Shattered Psyche (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 162-192 (103.1 - 122.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Black Sludge recovery

Under Electric Terrain

252+ SpA Heatran Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados: 224-268 (131.7 - 157.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados-Mega: 174-206 (102.3 - 121.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Suicune: 196-232 (94.6 - 112%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

I could put more calcs down here, but you get the general point. To take advantage of terrain switching to make cool plays. It pairs well with tapus in general due to its immunity to poison as well as flash fire for bulu and resistance to grass for fini as well as being good vs. them in general so I don't think it is that far out to slot into a team. Last slot I generally put flash cannon, though you can go for a variety of moves, from hp-ice, to rocks, even hyper beam and explosion work well with z-moves hitting like a truck off tran's respectable special attack.
