[OVERVIEW]
Gourgeist-XL theoretically secures itself a specialized niche: in a tier with popular defensive Ghost-types like Jellicent and Doublade, Gourgeist-XL stands out as the best dedicated spinblocker of the bunch thanks to its high physical bulk and valuable Grass typing, beating the tier's best spinners in Sandslash and Eldegoss one-on-one. In other functions, it ends up being a middle ground between Doublade's high physical stats and Jellicent's longevity. Gourgeist is also decently powerful, with a solid Attack stat, high-Base Power moves in Poltergeist and Power Whip, and STAB types that can tear apart common cores with Pokemon like Gigalith and Ribombee. However, what makes Gourgeist-XL subpar is that many of the tier's best offensive Pokemon, such as Charizard, Galarian Articuno, and Silvally-Ghost, can easily force it out. Synthesis, its main recovery move, heavily suffers from both its low PP and the popularity of sand, problems that don't bother Jellicent's Recover. Further, its neutrality to all entry hazards leaves it more susceptible to chip damage. Finally, as a niche, being the very best spinblocker is less valuable than Trevenant's ferocious wallbreaking or Doublade blanket checking most of the metagame, for example.

[SET]
name: Tank
move 1: Power Whip
move 2: Poltergeist
move 3: Synthesis
move 4: Shadow Sneak
item: Colbur Berry / No Item / Spell Tag
ability: Frisk
nature: Adamant
evs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Def

[SET COMMENTS]
Power Whip is useful for threatening Ground- and Rock-types like Sandaconda and Gigalith. Poltergeist nails opposing Ghost-types like Doublade while providing solid neutral coverage with Power Whip. Shadow Sneak lets Gourgeist-XL pick off faster foes like Galarian Articuno and Silvally-Ghost. Colbur Berry helps it take Knock Off from foes like Sandslash and Gallade. Running no item helps it switch into Poltergeist users like Trevenant and opposing Gourgeist while weakening Knock Off some a bit. Spell Tag increases Gourgeist-XL's offensive potential, specifically allowing it to always OHKO Charizard and Centiskorch, as well as 2HKOing defensive Eldegoss, but worsens its defensive profile and makes it harder to spinblock Sandslash. Gourgeist-XL has weaknesses to popular Fire- and Ice-types like Centiskorch and Aurorus, so it loves partners that can switch into these Pokemon, like Qwilfish and Gigalith; in return, they appreciate Gourgeist-XL switching into Ground- and Fighting-types like Sandslash and Sawk, spinblocking the former. Qwilfish can also absorb Toxic Spikes, a detriment to Gourgeist-XL.

Hey Heracross! I think for this set, what most people have been using is max Attack and max (or near max with some Speed creep) HP, in using Gourgeist-XL more as a tank to spinblock Sandslash and Eldegoss while also effectively threatening midgrounds that like to switch into Geist-XL. Shaneghoul used a max attack / max hp Geist-XL in his playoffs match here, as a quick example of what people have been using in this meta.

Max Attack with Adamant lets you 2HKO max HP Doublade, a pretty notable calc. Then, for the set, if you are going max Attack, it makes more sense to go with Shadow Sneak as its final option given this is largely unresisted and lets you do quite a fair bit of damage to things like Silvally-Ghost, Ribombee, etc. / avoid being hit by Doublade's slower Shadow Sneak. The set:

:Gourgeist:
Gourgeist-Super @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Poltergeist
- Power Whip
- Synthesis
- Shadow Sneak

Itemless, Spell Tag, and Leftovers are all fine too. I think I would never slash Poltergeist with anything and that there's only flexibility in that 4th ms.

QC said to implement the above set so I did that and changed the analysis to make it fit.

Gourgeist-XL secures itself a peculiar niche; in a team tier? with popular defensive Ghost-types like Jellicent and Doublade, Gourgeist-XL stands out as the best dedicated spinblocker of the bunch thanks to its high physical bulk and valuable Ground resistance, allowing it to 1v1 the tier's best spinners, Sandslash and Eldegoss. Compared to its competition, it is a decent middle-ground option that doesn't excel at one trait, but rather does many things the other Ghost-types would do adequately enough, making it a jack-of-all-trades this feels like filler, or at least could be shorter. Gourgeist is also quite powerful unboosted, with a solid Attack stat and high BP moves like Poltergeist and Power Whip also doesn't need to be this long. However, what makes Gourgeist-XL subpar is that many of the tier's best offensive Pokemon, such as Charizard, Galarian Articuno, and Silvally-Ghost, can easily threaten it out. Synthesis, its main recovery move, is heavily impacted both by its low PP and the popularity of Sand, making it recover less than something like Jellicent's Recover this would probably be more relevant if mentioned after how its stab moves hit common pokemon like gigalith. Its neutrality to all entry hazards leaves it susceptible to chip damage, which is compounded by Sand worsening Synthesis' recovery. Finally, Gourgeist is unable to excel at any specific role barring spinblocking like its competition and does not fill more valuable niches like the others do.
compare to more similar pokemon like trev and smallgeist
mention the general usefulness of its STAB combination to disrupt common cores

Breakers like Archeops and Gallade appreciate Gourgeist-XL keeping entry hazards up on the opposing side this doesn't really add anything, if they don't beat anything in particular with gourg spinblocking then itd be better to just use filler setup sweepers.

(honestly, i think it's worth slashing spell tag after no item. on top of what you already mentioned, spell tag poltergeist has a pretty high chance to 2HKO defensive eldegoss + shadow sneak becomes slightly more threatening late-game. you don't necessarily have to say all this, though the point about goss may be worth mentioning.) (add smth here about how their hazards become harder to remove thanks to supergeist.) (i think it may be worth briefly mentioning defoggers or tspike absorbers? idk, this thing has to spam synth way more if it gets poisoned, which sucks.)
