Battle Tree Ref Guide

The Battle Tree

The Battle Tree is a PvE game mode that features Pokemon battles, critical-thinking puzzles, and light roleplay. It is suitable for players of all skill levels but requires Pokemon of Stage 3* or higher. Entry cost is 10 JC.

Challenge Details:
  • The challenge consists of three individual battles. Each battle will be fought against a randomly-generated team. Winning all three battles counts as beating the Tree challenge.
  • The challenge ends if the challenger loses a battle.
  • All ties are treated as a loss for the challenger.
  • Each battle is preceded by a Roleplay Segment. In the Roleplay Segment, the ref will present an obstacle to the challenger. The challenger then decides how their team members will respond to the obstacle. The challenger's choices can potentially alter the direction the story takes.
Battle Rules:
  • 2v2 Singles
  • Switch = OK
  • Abilities: One
  • 48 hr DQ (72 hr for Ref)
  • 2 Recoveries / 5 Chills
  • 3 Substitutions
Battle Details:
  • The ref always sends out first.
  • Arena is default arena.
  • Illusion has no effect.
  • When challenging Tiers 1-2:
    • Items off
    • Power Construct has no effect.
  • When challenging Tier 3:
    • Items on
    • Mega Evolution: 1 per Mon
    • Z-Moves: 1 per Mon
    • Ref equips on sendout from the following list of items:
      • Barometer (only on mons with applicable Abilities)
      • Expert Belt
      • Flame Orb (only on mons with Guts)
      • Leftovers
      • Life Orb (only on mons with Abilities that negate Life Orb recoil)
      • Muscle Band
      • RageCandyBar
      • Wise Glasses
    • If the Profile lists data for a Mega Form, the ref must equip a Mega Stone and must immediately Mega Evolve on sendout.
    • If the Profile lists data for a specific item-based or attachment-based form, the ref must equip the appropriate transformative item or attachment, even if it is not on the list of possible ref items.
Battle Rewards:

Winning battles earns cumulative rewards:
Battle NumberVictory Reward
14 TC, 4 RC
2Challenger's Pokemon may advance to Stage 4*.
3Challenger's Pokemon may advance to Stage 5*.

Losing battles does not provide any rewards.
A Pokemon may not simultaneously evolve and advance its Stage.

Roleplay Rules:
  • Always show respect to other players!
  • Make sure to abide by Smogon's rules of conduct at all times.
  • The challenger’s team is comprised of:
    • The Trainer, which represents the player themselves.
    • The Trainer’s two Pokemon.
  • The challenger’s Pokemon cannot abandon their Trainer, and vice versa.
  • Pokemon can talk.
  • During Roleplay Segments, you are NOT allowed to harm, injure, or kill characters under any circumstances. (Threatening characters is okay.)
Roleplay Segment Details:

Throughout the challenge, the challenger and the ref will improvise a story. This story will be told across several Roleplay Segments (one RP Segment precedes each battle). RP Segments have no effect on battles, but participating will unlock special rewards for the challenger.

Each Roleplay Segment begins with the ref describing some sort of obstacle or complication that the challenger must overcome. The challenger's job is to use their Pokemon to Respond to the obstacle. The rules are as follows:
  • Within each Roleplay Segment, one or both Pokemon can Respond. If both Pokemon Respond, the rewards are greater.
  • A Pokemon may Respond in one (1) of the following two ways: Solve, or Impede.
    • Either way, the rewards are the same. Choose whichever suits you.
  • To Solve, a Pokemon must help overcome the obstacle.
  • To Impede, a Pokemon must sabotage the team's efforts to overcome the obstacle.
    • Each Pokemon may only Impede one (1) RP Segment per challenge.
    • If a Pokemon is Impeding, one of its contributions MUST be a Detrimental Quality.
  • Regardless of which Response is chosen, a Pokemon may contribute by using any number of the following things:
    • A move it knows.
    • Its Ability.
    • Its Held Item.
    • Its Pokedex entry (from any of the official Pokemon games).
    • Its biology (from Bulbapedia).
    • Its Helpful Qualities.
    • Its Detrimental Qualities.
  • In order to be credited, a Pokemon must contribute at least one (1) thing it has not already contributed previously in the challenge.
  • Pokemon are allowed (encouraged, even!) to work together by combining their contributions.
  • Each Response must have a >0% chance at being effective.
  • During Roleplay Segments, Metronome is banned.
After the challenger posts their Responses, the ref describes the outcome of the challenger's Responses. The ref can either: accept the Responses, reject the Responses, or request that the challenger remedy a flaw in their Responses.

At the end of the Roleplay Segment, if the challenger's Responses are valid, then the challenger is awarded 1 RP Token (RPT) for each Pokemon that contributed with something new. (Max. 2 RPT per RP Segment, 6 RPT per challenge).

Roleplay Tokens:

Roleplay Tokens (RPT), which are earned by participating in Roleplay Segments, can be spent to buy Titles.

RPT only exist within Battle Tree. They cannot be stockpiled. Any RPT you earn must be spent here in your next signup post. If you sign up without also spending the RPT you earned from your previous challenge, that RPT is forfeit.

Grandfather Clause: If the challenger's previous challenge started before the Tree update (it awarded TC instead of RPT), then that challenger may claim RPT equal to the TC they earned from RP Segments.

Titles:

Titles are prizes that can be purchased with RPT. They can be equipped to Pokemon to grant them additional Helpful and Detrimental Traits. Some Titles even alter the rules of RP Segments entirely!

Once you buy a Title, you own it forever and you can use it as many times as you want. Keep track of your owned Titles by listing them in your Trainer Profile.

Each Pokemon may equip a maximum of one (1) Title. If you want to equip the same Title to both of your Pokemon, you must buy it twice.
In addition, only one (1) Pokemon per challenge may equip a Title that comes with a Rule Alteration.

You may only buy Titles associated with the Scenario that you are signing up to challenge. For example, if you earned 4 RPT in your previous challenge and you are now signing up to challenge Mystery Jungle, you must spend the 4 RPT on Mystery Jungle Titles.

You may buy a Title and equip it in the same signup post, if you wish.

Sign-Up Procedures:
  • A player will post in this thread asking to participate in the Battle Tree challenge.
  • A ref will take your challenge if procedures are followed correctly.
  • Claim your rewards in the Prize Claiming Thread as if it were a battle. If your Pokemon are eligible to increase their Stages, it should be done in the same post you claim your counters in.
  • You may re-challenge the Battle Tree as soon as you like.
  • Players who are challenging Battle Tree for the first time take priority over returning challengers.
Beach Day: You and your Pokemon are spending a summer's day at the crowded beach, enjoying the hot sun and cool ocean. However, unbeknownst to all, something sinister seems to be lurking in the water...

Carnival: An annual festival in which humans and Pokemon celebrate their bonds of partnership. Enjoy the food, music, parades, and performances -- and of course, be dragged into many Pokemon battles by overeager Trainers.

Deep Space: The year is 30XX. Mankind has recently developed spaceships that travel at FTL speeds, allowing exploration of the cosmos. However, when the spaceship you are aboard begins to malfunction, you discover just how unprepared humanity is for the perils that lie hidden within the darkness of space...

Feudal Scuffle: While wandering through the feudal Ransei region, you see a plume of smoke rising from a neighboring province. Could it be a natural disaster? A wild Pokemon attack? Or perhaps an invading warlord? Only one way to find out... Travel across the untamed wilderness and resolve the incident!

Grocery Trip: A routine trip to the grocery store 1 mile from your house, in order to purchase a single item. Should be pretty straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?

High-Rise Metropolis: One of the most populous cities in the region. Scenic skyscrapers, speedy subways, and delicious eateries make this a great tourist spot. But you're not here for leisure -- today, you're here to track down a wanted criminal, capture them, and claim the sizable bounty on their head.

Mystery Jungle: A dense rainforest with wet, marshy soil underfoot and several layers of tree foliage overhead. You came to explore after hearing rumors of an ancient temple filled with treasure.

University of Science: A huge and prestigious university dedicated to the advancement of science. You can find all manners of experiments here. The scientists are always busy at work, and all would appreciate a helping hand!

Village of the Boreal Forest: A remote village, nestled deep within a snowy forest. Some say that this village holds the secret to a strange and powerful Pokemon Battling technique. Perhaps there is somebody within the village who could teach you about the mysterious fighting style?

Pokemon #1: Maya the Kangaskhan

Naturally, Maxim helped thwart the poachers, and made friends with Maya along the way, eventually taking her with him on his adventures. Maya has taken to city life surprisingly well, helping Maxim with chores around the house. She picked up an odd habit of cleanliness while around him though.
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Maya is very caring, and can help talk down opponents.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Maya is something of a neat freak, sometimes focusing on cleaning up filth in the immediate area despite more pressing concerns.

Pokemon #2: Vigil the Sigilyph
Pokemon Ability: Wonder Skin
Pokemon Item: None
Pokemon Background: Maxim met Vigil in the Desert Resort early on in his adventures. Vigil quickly proved his worth to the team, providing heavy support to the team in terms of flight, knowledge, and occasionally firepower. However, while Vigil knows a lot about ancient history, he unfortunately gets it mixed up with various conspiracy theories through the ages. His belief in conspiracy theories has made him very paranoid, and thus very bad at social interaction, though Maxim has been working with him on this.
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Vigil is knowledgeable about ancient ruins and archeology.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Vigil can be a paranoid wreck at times.

"I think it's time for a trip to outer space. Don't forget to bring the milk!"

Name: Doduodrio (but "Duo" as a nickname is fine as well)
Challenge Thread: Click Me!
Tier: 2
Scenario: Deep Space
Title Purchases: I will claim 2 RPT because I earned 2 TC in my previous challenge. I will then purchase the Soldier (2 RPT) Title.

Pokemon #1::slowbro: Sheldon the Slowbro
Pokemon Ability: Regenerator
Pokemon Background: Sheldon is a very relaxed Pokemon who finds it hard to focus, as his mind constantly drifts off. His big shell and thick body lend him protection against many attacks, letting him take hits more easily. Even though his behavior indicates little intelligence, Doduodrio firmly believes that inside, Sheldon is a very thoughtful and caring Pokemon who is actually quite smart. He still has yet to prove Doduodrio right, though. Sheldon was traded over from one of Doduodrio's friends in an attempt to evolve him into a Slowking. Before being traded, Sheldon lost his King's Rock and ended up not evolving. Out of frustration or love for Sheldon, the friend decided that Sheldon would be better off with Doduodrio. Since then, Sheldon has evolved into a big, strong Slowbro!
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Since Sheldon is a Slowbro, he is very calm and thinks things through thoroughly... that is, when he thinks at all.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Sheldon is prone to spacing out at the worst times, causing him to be quite clumsy as well.

Pokemon #2::plasmanta: Node the Plasmanta
Pokemon Ability: Storm Drain
Pokemon Background: Even though Node is a Plasmanta now, she still retained her limitless energy from when she was a Snugglow. She still has a very bubbly personality, although she can be childish at times. She is still learning about how to deal with her much larger body size but enjoys flying through the air with her magnetic fields. In terms of age, Node is actually very young, since Doduodrio hatched her from an egg given to him by the Smogon CAP Nursery. Doduodrio wanted to raise a Pokemon from an egg to gain more experience. Electric and Poison are also some of the more dangerous Pokemon types which would give him knowledge for how to deal with stronger, more dangerous Pokemon in the future.
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Node's is, by nature, very optimistic and energetic, lifting the spirits of those around her.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Node can be easily upset and often thrashes around in temper tantrums.
:SS/Slowbro:
Slowbro: Sheldon - Male - Stage 3
Types: Water/Psychic
Abilities: Oblivious / Own Tempo / (Unlocked) Regenerator
Profile as a Slowpoke:
Slow and dopey, Sheldon chugs along at his own pace. He has a sturdy body, so if he was attacked, he probably wouldn't even notice. He is often caught staring blankly into space.

Changes Upon Evolving:
One day, Sheldon was sitting at the beach, staring off into space with his usual blank expression when a Shellder flipped out of the water and chomped down hard on his tail, triggering his sudden evolution! Sheldon can now sit up straight, but he still finds it difficult to focus on what's in front of him. His intelligence seems to have increased a little bit, though. Just a bit. Sheldon's body is sturdier than it was as a Slowpoke and can now launch stronger Psychic and Water attacks.

How They Met:
Sheldon's original trainer was one of Doduodrio's friends who traded him in the hopes of evolving him. Unfortunately, before the trade happened, Sheldon managed to lose his King's Rock, and couldn't evolve into Slowking. Because he was a traded Pokemon, Sheldon is one of Doduodrio's strongest team members. His original trainer insists that he doesn't want to trade back for Sheldon, so Doduodrio has been raising him ever since.

Name Origins:
Sheldon has "Shel" in it which references Slowbro's category, the "Hermit Crab" Pokemon.

:SS/Plasmanta:
Plasmanta: Node - Female - Stage 3
Types: Electric/Poison
Abilities: Storm Drain / Vital Spirit / (Unlocked) Telepathy
Profile as a Snugglow:
Node is cheerful and constantly bounces around with seemingly limitless energy. She loves to hug her friends. Her bubbly personality cheers up her teammates and helps encourage them in battle. Node isn't always like this, though; when she doesn't get her way, she can be quite feisty.

Changes Upon Evolving:
Node is no longer as small and bouncy as she was as a Snugglow, but she's still very energetic. Her loving hugs always make her teammates feel better and encourage them to continue battling their hardest. She's too big to fit indoors, though, so she gets to stay outside in a special barn. Her increase in size also means that Node is big enough to be ridden; she glides gracefully through the air, held aloft by magnetic currents.

How They Met:
Doduodrio hatched Node from when she was an egg, hoping to learn more about raising Pokemon through her. Electric and Poison are some of the more dangerous Pokemon types, so he was hoping for it to be good experience for the future. He received the egg from a Pokemon Breeder who worked at the Smogon CAP Nursery.

Name Origins:
The two antennae on Snugglow and Plasmanta look like what Doduodrio originally thought were called "nodes."

What could go wrong this time...

Scenario: Village of the Boreal Forest
Thread: Here
Tier: 3

I will send:

:tyranitar:Gunhilde the Tyranitar
Item
: :muscle band:Muscle Band
Ability: Sand Stream
Background: Gunhilde's previous trainer was interested only in her utility, putting her to work in heavy labor. Following his arrest, Gunhilde languished in storage before making her escape the first time she was released from her ball. She lived within city limits for months as a feral Pokemon, wracking up quite the hefty bounty in property damage taking what she needed. Rather than hand Gunhilde over and claim the reward for her capture, Lou offered her a place in his team.
Helpful: Gunhilde is confident in her strength and presence.
Harmful: Gunhilde is confident... and conceited. And very, very easy to flatter.

Gunhilde (Tyranitar ♀)
★★★★

Impish nature ( +Defense, -Sp.Attack )
Typing: Rock/Dark
Abilities: Sand Stream HA: Unnerve
Name Etymology:
A historical bolt-throwing weapon, named the Domina Gunilda, mounted to Windsor Castle in the 1300s to repel intruders. The name spread to other large projectile emplacements, becoming synonymous with heavy artillery and the usage thereof.

Attitude and Motive:
Confident and conceited. Gunhilde is happiest when she's able to throw her weight around and hold dominance over her surroundings.

History:
Gunhilde's previous trainer was interested only in her utility, putting her to work in heavy labor. Following his arrest, Gunhilde languished in storage before making her escape the first time she was released from her ball. :necturna:Ira the Necturna
Item
: :razor fang:Razor Fang
Ability: Forewarn
Background: Found in the aftermath of an altercation in a busy metropolitan thoroughfare. Her previous trainer had attempted to discard her, citing an inability to contain her violent urges, and Ira had lashed out rather than merely languish. Several bystanders were harmed in the ensuing incident as well before she was contained. When the erratically quivering ball was thrust into Lou's hands by the trainer, it seemed there was more to their story that they weren't telling...
Helpful: Uh. I wouldn't hold your breath.
Harmful: Vengeful, cruel, and deeply fearful by nature. Quick to assume ill intent in others. Prone to actions of "pre-emptive self-defense."

Ira (Necturna ♀)
★★★ ⭒ ⭒

Serious nature ( +None, -None )
Typing: Grass/Ghost
Abilities: Forewarn HA: Telepathy
Name Etymology:
Wrath, one of the seven cardinal sins in Abrahamic faiths. It manifests in mortals as the desire to see another come to pain or harm.

Attitude and Motive:
Vengeful, cruel, and deeply fearful by nature. Quick to assume ill intent in others. Prone to actions of "pre-emptive self-defense."

Update:
-Added a new Scenario, "Beach Day" (incorporated ideas from Doduodrio ).
-Added an associated Title Shop (remember that once you own a Title, you can bring it to any Scenario!).
-Added a new Generic Event, "Directions".

Changes are effective in future challenges.

Scenario: Grocery Trip
Title Purchases: Disaster Magnet

Tier: 3

Pokemon #1: Abigail the Tyranitar
Pokemon Ability: Sand Stream
Pokemon Item: Weakness Policy
Pokemon Background: While Abigail enjoys the occasional battle, she's not as interested in them as many pokemon are. Growing up, she was much more interested in painting, writing, and music, and now she spends most of her free time either writing or sculpting things.
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Abigail is a very creative pokemon and is skilled at multiple kinds of art, including writing and sculpting.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Abigail is a very shy pokemon and is reluctant to interact with strangers.
Title: Disaster Magnet
Title Helpful Quality: Resilient
Title Detrimental Quality: Anxious
Title Rule Alteration: When the ref is rolling their RP Events: if the first two rolled events are Generic Events, then the third rolled event must be a Special Event. If the ref uses a Mulligan Token to alter the sequence of Events, then the resultant sequence must still contain at least one Special Event.

Pokemon #2: Kaya the Heracross
Pokemon Ability: Guts
Pokemon Item: Flame Orb
Pokemon Background: Kaya grew up sparring with her siblings, and is convinced that a friendly fight is the best way to make new friends. Her desire for interesting battles led her to practice tracking down pokemon that she thought would give her a good fight.
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Kaya is a skilled tracker.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Kaya is very aggressive and will tend to try to fight even if other options are available.

"Let's go enjoy a nice trip to the beach! It is summer after all. Don't worry, I'll bring milk!"

Name: Doduodrio (but "Duo" as a nickname is fine as well)
Challenge Thread: Click Me!
Tier: 2
Scenario: Beach Day
Title Purchases: I will claim 2 RPT because I earned 2 TC in my previous challenge. I will then purchase the Surfer (2 RPT) Title.

Pokemon #1::slowbro: Sheldon the Slowbro

Pokemon #2::bisharp: Rook the Bisharp
Pokemon Ability: Defiant
Pokemon Background: Rook is overly cautious and trusts nobody because of past experiences. He also doesn't talk much, being more of a strong and silent type. Rook has a dangerous obsession with sharpening his blades and is always hungry for a fight. Doduodrio hopes to get through to him somehow.
Pokemon Helpful Quality: Rook is highly adaptive and find a solution to a problem very quickly.
Pokemon Detrimental Quality: Always eager to pick a fight regardless of the situation. Emphasis on "regardless of the situation".

:ss/bisharp:
Bisharp: Rook - Male - Stage 4
Types: Dark/Steel
Abilities: Defiant / Inner Focus / (Unlocked) Pressure
Profile:
Rook is overly cautious and trusts nobody because of past experiences. He's more of a strong and silent type. Rook has a dangerous obsession with sharpening his blades and is always hungry for a fight. Doduodrio hopes to get through to him somehow.

How They Met:
Once, Rook was undefeated and led his own pack of Pawniard. Until one of them evolved into a Bisharp and challenged his leadership. And defeated him, driving him out of the pack. In doing so, his pride was damaged, maybe irreparably so, so when Doduodrio stumbled upon him, he immediately challenged him to a battle. As Rook was still hurt from his duel with the other Bisharp, he lost easily and was caught.

Name Origins:
"Rook" is the name of a chess piece. Fairly straightforward name.

Taking on some increased responsibilities at work so I'm gonna put up this run for subref now, as I know I won't have the energy to continue it with decent timing and quality (since I already don't have the energy to do so, lol).
