Gen 2 Tangela (NU) (Mini) [QC 0/2]

Sevi 7

Semi-retired
[Overview]
Tangela has amazing Defense, good typing and instant recovery. It's able to cripple opponents with Sleep Powder and Stun Spore, and does respectable damage with its great Special Attack. All of which allows it to check some of the biggest threats in NU, including one of the scariest physical attackers, Dugtrio. However, that’s all Tangela can offer. Although its high Defense can make up for its low HP, Tangela’s pitiful Special Defense makes it vulnerable to any unresisted special attack. This means that the everpresent Xatu and Fire-type Pokemon can give Tangela a lot of trouble. Tangela also can’t take advantage of its high Special Attack, because its best attacking move is Hidden Power. Furthermore, Tangela’s recovery move, Synthesis, has a mere 8 PP, greatly limiting how many attacks it can take. Worst of all is Tangela is generally an inferior pick to Gloom, who has Fighting-type resistence and better offensive power. Tangela shouldn’t be overlooked when building a team though. Its defense solid choice that can support a team in a way that no other Pokemon in the metagame can.

move 4: Synthesis

[SET COMMENTS]
Tangela's set is made to spread status. Stun Spore slows down an opponent's team and can make fast threatening Pokemon, like Dugtrio or Primeape, a lot more manageable. Sleep Powder can be used as a secondary status move. Sleep can essentially be a KO in some circumstances, but if a team already has a sleep inducer then Hidden Power Ice can be used instead for coverage. Thief can also be a good option to steal Leftovers, which can help wear down bulkier Pokemon. The third attack is Tangela's main Grass-STAB attack. If Tangela is running Sleep Powder, then Hidden Power Grass is the attack of choice. Giga Drain cannot damage Substitutes, and this is a commonly used move among Tangela's checks. If Tangela is already using Hidden Power Ice though, then Tangela can break Dugtrio's Substitutes with that, and Tangela can use Giga Drain instead. Finally, Tangela needs recovery, and Synthesis is its only viable option.

Tangela should be used to check physical attackers and Electric-type Pokemon that could otherwise overwhelm your team. Dugtrio, Kingler and Stantler are particularly dangerous physical attackers that can often wallbreak or sweep balanced teams. Tangela can stop their momentum and status or even KO them in return, making Tangela a good support option. However, Tangela is not always a solid check to these Pokemon. Thief, which removes Tangela’s passive recovery, can severely hurt Tangela's long term survivability. Dugtrio and Kingler also often have Substitute, which stops Sleep Powder, Stun Spore and Giga Drain. Dugtrio’s Toxic and Stantler’s Hypnosis also removes Tangela as a threat. Worst of all, RestTalk Stantler can Rest off paralysis and doesn’t take much damage from Tangela’s Hidden Power or Giga Drain. Thus, Tangela struggles to do anything significant to RestTalk Stantler, while Tangela is worn down until it runs out of Synthesis PP. Even with that in mind, Tangela can still be used as a defensive pivot and keep momentum in the player's favor, when facing those threats. Tangela's extra defense can be all a team needs to not fall apart. Tangela can also be used to check Electric-type Pokemon that lack an Ice-type attack. STAB Thunder can sometimes be a critical weak point in a team’s defense, and Tangela can fill-in that defensive weak point. Magnemite and Chinhou are the two most common Electric-type Pokemon; however, Magnemite usually carries Hidden Power Ice, so Chinchou is the only Electric-type that Tangela should expect to wall. With that said, Tangela does need to worry about Thunder's paralysis.

To check Tangela, one needs to take advantage of its lack of Special Defense. RestTalk Hidden Power Ice Xatu makes for a good check because of this. Hidden Power Ice has a good chance of 2HKOing and Psychic has a chance to 2HKO as well. Any Fire-type with Rest Talk can make an excellent check for similar reasons. Fire Blast will 2HKO Tangela and Tangela cannot do much damage to them. Dewgong does 82.5% minimum damage with Ice Beam, and has either Encore to force Tangela to keep using Hidden Power Ice or Synthesis or Rest Talk to shake of status. Dewgong is 3HKOed by Tangela's Grass attacks, so Dewgong may need to be a little cautious in some situations though. Finally, Weezing can be another good choice. Sludge Bomb and Fire Blast both 2HKO Tangela and Tangela cannot do much damage in return. However, Weezing only speed ties Tangela and Weezing doesn't like to be statused.

This overview is way too positive about Tangela. Tangela is quite bad in GSC NU and faces fierce competition from Gloom who has a Fighting-resistance and is more offensively threatening. Tangela beats quite few Pokemon and is OHKOd easily by all the tiers Fire-types and is awful vs Xatu. The main reason to use Tangela in my opinion is that its the single best counter to Dugtrio, which is very useful considering who dominant Dugtrio is.

I’d give mention to Thief, put it in the second slash.

Mention Gloom and why its largely preferred over Tangela. I’d mention that while Tangela does do well vs Chinchou, it should watch out for paralysis from Thunder. Other than this, this section looks fine.

QC 1/2 when done.
