I have never played a tier other than OU or Ubers in any gen, but with the power creep of SV I've decided to try my hand.

dune (Orthworm) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Earth Eater
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes
- Shed Tail
- Iron Head

This pokemon also serves as my lead on my OU team. Pretty standard set. Try to get hazards out and get a shed tail over to my sweepers. Feel like this guy is gonna move up to OU soon so might need to replace him in a few weeks.

bird (Lucario) @ Leftovers
Ability: Inner Focus
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Swords Dance
- Ice Punch
- Close Combat

My all time favorite pokemon (have him tatooed on my leg), Lucario is a lock for this team. Not a super weird set either. Good revenge killer with extreme speed. Close Combat is a must have obviously. I think Ice Punch is a nice surprise for ground types who want to switch in. Don't like Life Orb, but am open to switch out leftovers.

little bro (Salamence) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dual Wingbeat
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw

Salamence fills the role that Roaring Moon does in OU. DD sweeper who can cause harm behind a shed tail subsitute. Tera steel doesn't do anything for me offensively but does let me stay in against an Ice type in case i have 3+ DDs set up and dont want to have to switch out. Other than that its pretty standard.

knox (Forretress) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 176 HP / 252 Def / 80 SpD
Impish Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Body Press
- Iron Defense
- Explosion

This is where the team gets a little weird. Tera steel is good for defense even if it doesnt add any STAB hits. Iron D/Body Press can punish opponent for sitting on his defensive pivot and rapid spin is obviously useful. Explosion can get me out of a tight spot sometimes, but I'm not married to it either. Would be willing to change out this pokemon but not sure what works better as a second defensive piviot

dennis (Gengar) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Psychic
- Sludge Bomb

Needing a special attacker, I went with the strongest one in the tier. Standard specs set. Tera fighting focus blast can blow up a steel or dark type in a pinch.

neo (Tatsugiri) @ Mystic Water
Ability: Storm Drain
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Nasty Plot
- Tera Blast
- Draco Meteor

Second special attacker. This team has a prety obvious fire weakness so Tatsu cleans up some of it. Tera steel helps me beat ice types if needed.

This is the first time i've built a team w/o using guides from Smogon or other players on a forum. Any thoughts? Any obvious changes that can be made?

Hello there and welcome to Smogon !

From what I'm looking at, your team is built around Shed Tail Orthworm. Looking at the team, there is some things I would change.

dune (Orthworm) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Earth Eater
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Shed Tail
- Spikes < Body Press
- Iron Head < Heavy Slam

First of all I would replace Spikes by Body Press. While Tera Ghost allows Orthworm to counter Rapid Spin user, it will never allow it to prevent Defog. With that in mind, I think you'll have a hard time to set both Stealth Rocks and Spikes. So I would advise you to replace Spikes by Body Press which allows Orthworm to hit for good damages quite a lot of Pokémon. With the same thing in mind, I would run Heavy Slam on Orthworm. It deals more damages to a lot of glassy and lighter Pokémon while still dealing decent damages to more heavy ones.

bird (Lucario) @ Leftovers < Life Orb or Silk Scarf or Muscle Band
Ability: Inner Focus
Tera Type: Fighting < Normal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Swords Dance
- Ice Punch < Bullet Punch or Meteor Mash
- Close Combat

SD Lucario is a massive threat in the tier and while you may dislike Life Orb, it's still its best option, by far. If you trully dislike the recoil induces by the item I would advise you to run Silk Scarf or Muscle Band. Lucario is used like Dragonite in SV OU as E-killer Pokémon which can abuse of Extreme Speed. With that in mind, running Tera Normal is mandatory. Also while it's true that Ice Punch hits for super effective damages Ground-types, it's still not worth it. Indeed, Close Combat + STAB has a Base Power of 180 (120 x 1.5) while Ice Punch + super effective "only" reaches 150 (75 x 2). This means that Close Combat is stronger than a super effective Ice Punch. I would advise you to run Bullet Punch which allows Lucario to hit fast Ghost-types such as Gengar or Mimikyu. If you want a more powerful STAB move, then run Meteor Mash but this would lead Lucario to be revenge killed with more ease by the 2 Pokémon mentionned above.

little bro (Salamence) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant < Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dual Wingbeat < Iron Head
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw

Overall a good set. I would just opt for a Jolly nature and Iron Head over Dual Wingbeat. Alongside Tera Steel, Iron Head is a great STAB to abuse and something overall better than Dual Wingbeat.

Alright so Forretress definitively feels weird there. Especially since there is better Steel-types you could use like Tinkaton or Bisharp. I think Bisharp would work really well in this type of offensive team so let's go with it :

Bisharp @ Eviolite
Ability: Defiant
Tera Type: Fire / Flying / Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Brick Break / Night Slash / Tera Blast

Bisharp brings some value to your team thanks to its natural bulk (shoutout Eviolite) and the fact it can pressure to a certain extent Defog users thanks to Defiant. Since the best user of this move tend to be Talonflame, Tera Fire is really valuable on Bisharp since it allows it to not fear a potential burn from Flame Body or Will-O-Wisp. When running this Tera type, Tera Blast can be seen as a good option to dent Steel-types. Tera Flying is a great defensive asset for Bisharp by switching its weaknesses to Fight and Ground for a resistance and an immunity. Last but not least Tera Ghost fill the same type of role by giving a useful immunity to Fighting-type while providing a Rapid Spin immunity. I think all three would work well and you should try all of them before opting for a final choice.

dennis (Gengar) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Fighting ~ Ghost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest < Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Psychic < Energy Ball
- Sludge Bomb

Like Salamence, there isn't a lot to add here. I would just opt for Timid on Gengar which is too valuable since its speed tier is great in UU. I would also opt for Energy Ball over Psychic since it allows Gengar to hit Water-types and Gastrodon which is one of its best answer. You could also try Tera Ghost which allows Gengar to nuke a ton of Pokémon on the neutral side. Even Dark-types such as Iron Jugulis can't come multiple times on a Choice Specs Tera Ghost Shadow Ball while others such as Tyranitar, Bisharp or Wo-Chien are getting blasted by a regular Choice Specs Focus Blast.

I have almost nothing to add for Tatsugiri. You could change Tera Blast + Tera Steel for Rapid Spin + Tera Water. This would allows Tatsugiri to have some utility by removing entry hazards from your side of the field while still hitting pretty hard Ice-types and Fairy-types thanks to a Tera boosted Surf. Heavy-Duty Boots are also really valuable on this Pokémon.

Final Team
