mael vs DeepBlueC
DPP in SPL XIII kicked off with a stall vs stall matchup with both players bringing the Skarm/Clef/Bulky Latias structures we saw a ton of in Classic Playoffs a couple months prior. I really liked the touch of the specially defensive SD Scizor on mael's team, it would help deal w/ Latias and Gengar against offense like a scarftar would, but also serves as a wincon vs bulky structures as was seen in this game. I think mael played this game really well and am excited to see what he's gonna bring in the future and how DBC will approach his matchup vs Sakito this week, who also brought a Skarm/Clef/Bulky Lati structured team this week.

1641781836997.png

Christo vs 100percentpureheat

Contrary to the previous game, both players here brought fast paced, hyper offense teams. I really liked both players' teams here: I think Aerodactyl lead was a great call from the tyrants side and definitely helped them gain an early advantage. I think 100pph's team had some really cool techs, Rock tomb on suicide Skarm lead helping to guarantee both SR and 1 spike on most leads, breaking opposing sashes and slowing down Scarf Magnezones for the incoming Pokemon. I also think the Agility Lucario bring was really cool: the set has not been brought in recent SPL memory, but I think having Rotom and Iron Ball Skarm helps mitigate the set's issues with Jirachi, making it a good fit on here. I think some key plays Christo made during turns 6-8 let him take control and win the game, and I hope that both Christo is able to keep up his consistent top level play he showed he's capable of in the past year of DPP and that the Raiders DPP slot can bounce back with creative builds like this.

1641782562789.png

Snofall vs Sakito

I absolutely loved Snofall's team here: I think both Specially Defensive Empoleon and Mixed Flygon are super strong in the modern DPP metagame, and both of them fit really well on Skarm Spikes structures w/ a bulky Rotom to help keep hazards up vs spinners (and the aforementioned Emp helping ease these two's Heatran weaknesses). I also really love Scarf Lucario - It puts so much work in vs offense, being able to serve as a DD dragonite, Gyarados, Gengar and opposing Lucario check, which really helps make this team have an overall great matchup into the majority of the metagame as DD tyranitar can help the game snowball vs more defensive structures. I liked Sakito's team too - I think adding Quagsire to Skarm/Clef/Bulky Lati structures helps with the hyper offense matchup, neutering setup sweepers as Sakito was able to do here to Snofall's DD tyranitar. A rushed endgame by Sakito was able to let Snofall take it in the end - I'm hoping we'll be able to see Sakito bounce back in the coming weeks.

1641783336535.png

Kristyl vs Void

An exciting and down to the wire game, Kristyl was able to have her SPL debut end up as a win. Congrats! I think her team here was pretty bold, bringing a Paraspam team with a really uncommon mon in Mamoswine. I think the team choice definitely worked out here, with the Mamo being able to sub up on Void's Protect Breloom and break through it. I like Void's team here too, I like the core idea of Scarftran + Mixgon, though the lack of concrete defensive backbone those mons have helped contribute to Void's loss here. A key wakeup and Healing Wish on turn 22 were able to let Kristyl's Gyarados clean up the game - I think she had a great showing in her SPL debut and I think Void will be able to give us great games of Pokemon in the following games as a proven veteran player.

1641784038493.png

Malekith vs tamahome

Both players brought offensively oriented teams. tama opened up the game well, but some misplays + his team not being the best equipped for DDtar helped Malekith sweep with it. I think the Scarf Pursuit Metagross was a cool touch by Malekith, helping alleviate issues with Gengar that his team could have had without it. I think Malekith has creative builds and I anticipate he'll continue to bring cool stuff, and I'm confident tama will be able to win his games in the future.

I think this was an entertaining week for DPP games, we still saw the stall structures that had an absolute stranglehold on the tier during Classic playoffs but there were a lot of other creative teams that I was happy to see. Hopefully we get more people figuring out new ways to break these stall structures, though I think DPP is overall in a great state currently with a lot of structures and styles being viable.

Interesting to see 0 Roserades. Teams seem very well adapted to it, with 9 of the 10 teams used this week only having 1 Pokemon that is vulnerable to TSpikes. After posting a high usage rate and winrate last SPL (| 13 | Roserade | 16 | 17.78% | 68.75% |) Rose seems to be much more out of favor this tour.

I also found it interesting that there were only 4 ghost-types, with one of those teams (Snofall's) having no other fighting resist; Void brought a team with fighting resist SpecsMie, and Sakito's sole fighting resist was Latias. Breloom and Lucario both had some solid performances in Week 1, and I wonder if we'll see any double-fighting teams in the near future; the Zapdos, Machamp, Breloom, Clef/Bliss(?) structure spammed in DPP Cup comes to mind. Machamp could be a solid pick going forward as well.

The rise of Breloom also means that the most common Grass-type is a specially frail Water resist; none of those teams paired it with a special sponge like Clef or Blissey, so perhaps rain could be a cool bring in the coming weeks. Excited for the Week 2 games!

(edit -- yes as Tomahawk says later in the thread u can't conclude too much from 10 games and trends can easily change ... but it's fun to speculate a little bit about it =])

had a coversation with Le Don about this earlier, but i anticipate that teambuilding approaches this season will be very anti-Latias. after the wild season last year where bulky lati was all over the place, i was happy see to see a lot of offensive teams this w1. hilariously, this might lead to a scarf Latias revival towards the end of the season, to come full circle back to checking offense. crazy to watch the ebb and flow of a meta change right in front of your eyes!!

Just a quick comment on this, of course it is a bit early to draw conclusions but it is interesting. I think if you glance over the teams used this week I think it's obvious why there were no Roserades: 50% Skarmory usage. Basically the two consistently used Spikers in this tier, I think Rose's biggest advantages over Skarm are that it is not Magnezone weak and that it can set up Toxic Spikes, but seems like most players right now for week 1 preferred the advantages of Skarm in exchange for the weakness of Magnezone (and to be fair, two of them were leads in which case it is not that big a deal even cause you can still get two layers in theory). Maybe it is because it is week 1 and Magnezone is more of a scout-based mons and will start showing up more later, or maybe because Rose is more established and Magnezone becomes less consistent, making Skarmory better and basically you are just in a trend cycle - either of these reasons could cause more Rose to appear in later weeks. Of course, also a potential reason could be that Roserade teams kind of all follow a similar structure and perhaps players are afraid this is prepared for or it has some weaknesses. Like for example, the team Tamahome brought looks kind of similar to a standard Rose team (although I don't know if Zapdos replaced Roserade or Heatran or the last is something else entirely), and it had some notable issues with DD Tyranitar. Oh and of course a last reason is that these are after all only ten games, and we should not be too quick to conclude everything!

mael vs Void

Week 2 kicked off with the first Roserade team of the season - a huge contrast to how popular the structure was last SPL. I think Void's team was a cool take on the structure, the Rose set while it didn't work out here is a cool tough to help deal with a team that otherwise has a very weak backbone against Breloom. I also think Life Orb Heatran is cool on these Rose teams - we saw it last year used by august on a structure like this but with Latias/Suicune over Flygon/Swampert, it's really tough to pivot around safely when taking significant damage from hazards along with its attacks. mael brought a HO setup spam squad this time around, with some cool choices like Froslass lead, which goes well with the CM/Iron Head/Psychic/thunderbolt set which benefits nicely from Spikes. I think mael played the endgame well here, even if he didn't get the crit there he likely would have had an opportunity to get DD tar to +2 against a superrachi and sweep from there. Fun game that had teams with some cool techs added to proven structures.

1642400942553.png

DeepBlueC vs Sakito

We saw two proven structures again here, with Sakito using a Roserade balance and DBC using a Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati stall. I think using a MixGon on the structure was a good decision by DBC, his team last week was similar and struggled vs mael's scizor due to being too passive, so a MixGon allows him to be able to break some holes in the opponent's defensive core and take advantage of spikes. Sakito's team used a thunder rachi, which I think is a really nice touch to Roserade balance when the structure commonly struggles against Skarmory. I think this was a nice bounceback game from DBC and I'm curious how his team choices will go in future weeks.

1642401658760.png

Malekith vs Christo

I like both players' teams here: Christo used an offensively oriented team using 3 choiced breakers w/ a Zapdos lead that had Heat Wave + Hidden Power Grass coverage. I've been a big fan of lead Zapdos recently, it's really hard to switch into and I think it's awesome on teams like this which want to keep momentum up as much as possible. Malekith used a nice Skarm spikes balance with a Special Swampert and a SpD Empoleon, which I think is a great choice w/ Skarm/Rotom cores to help cover pretty much every notable Heatran set for those two. I think Malekith played really well here, positioning himself well to not let lucario sweep his team after a Bandtar pursuit while also not letting Specs Latias and Scarf Rotom overwhelm his team.

1642403182483.png

Kristyl vs H.M.N.I.P

A battle of endurance between two Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati teams with Kristyl coming out on top. I really love Kristyl's use of Refresh Jirachi - so many teams try to stop it by either burning it with something like Gengar or paralyzing it with something like Latias as we saw here, making the trade of paras on turn 37 end up as a big step of progress for Kristyl.

1642403368750.png

SFG vs Emeral

A double sub allowed SFG to have his SPL debut and come out of it with a win. Congrats! SFG brought a team with 3 choiced breakers including a Magnezone that unfortunately ran into a Shed Shell Skarm on a Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati stall team. A crit flinch from Swampert on Hippowdon helped SFG muscle through the matchup, but I think he played to his outs well.

General comments about trends in teams so far:
  • 5/10 teams had Skarmory this week, along with 2 Roserades and a Froslass, adding up to 7/10 teams having a spiker. In addition to this, we've seen only 1 Starmie this season - I think these teams are prepping well against spinners with Bulky and Scarf Rotoms, Scarftars and in the case of mael's Froslass team, a breakneck pace that would greatly punish a spin with a setup move. Will people try to incorporate new ways to beat these spinblockers to open up for Starmie or other spinners? I think Void had the right idea with running Specs on Starmie, you wanna break through the spinblocker so you can get a spin later in the game.
  • Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati stuff is really common - more specifically, Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati/Scarftar/Jirachi/Ground type has been used in 4/10 games this week and 2/10 games last week. How will teams adjust to the popularity of this structure?
  • Flygon has had a really high usage so far, with both Scarf and Mixed sets being used multiple times. I think MixGon especially is an absolutely amazing set - the only switch ins that you know can switch in multiple times are Hippowdon, Milotic and Clefable - and all of these are because of recovery moves. In a lot of cases, teams have no true switch in to MixGon, and if it picks the right move, significant progress is made and in some cases the game is won right there. Curious to see if people find new ways to deal with it offensively/defensively or bring the set themselves.

Great summaries overall, but just to note +2 tar absolutely did not give him an opportunity to win as its still outsped by the jolly scarfgon I had in the back. He definitely needed either needed the crit or tbolt para into full para to allow him to get +3 while avoiding a tbolt para from my own rachi to win.

Sakito vs tamahome

A favorable matchup helped lead Sakito to his first win this SPL. Sakito's team was a nice take on a Skarm spikes offense, with Gengar and Scarf Lucario to break for the defensive core of ttar/Skarm/Bulky Lati. I think Gengar and Scarf Lucario have a good chemistry here: not only can both can force switches and take advantage of spikes, Scarf Lucario's great ability to deal with the common HO threats and Gengar's ability to tear apart bulky offenses' defensive backbone makes them able to cover as many structures as possible. For this week, tama brought a Rose balance that was a bit unconventionial, with no dragon or ghost type which are usually staples of the structure. I think this ended up hurting him in the case of a ghost type, as a scarf rotom would've made it so Scarf Lucario would've been more easily contained in the endgame & it would've taken great advantage of the chip he got on ttar early. I think this was a well played game for both players; tama made smart, understandable moves knowing he was at a disadvantage and Sakito helped maintain that into a victory.

mael vs BIHI

Aided by a crit on Rotom by Gyara and the Jirachi Iron Head Machine getting the flinch it needed, mael is able to maintain his undefeated record so far this SPL. I think this kind of HO is an awesome fit for Camerupt: it's has safe switch ins like the aforementioned Rotom that let it get rocks up, and it helps a ton against Heatran which the CM/Iron Head/tbolt/Psychic Jirachi set definitely wants. I think what BIHI did with Rotom lead here is super cool too, usually when you see a Rotom at lead you assume it's a Rest/talk/WoW/stab set on a bulky team that can't really afford another lead, but BIHI actually runs the Rotom form's special move in Blizzard, which allows you to catch things like Latias that would switch into a WoW. I think both teams here were cool and hope to see more DPP BIHI this SPL.

DeepBlueC vs Void

An impressive win from DBC with a nice comeback sweep with DDtar. I loved DBC's team here, maybe my favorite team of the week: I think the Substitute Soft Sand Flygon is such a cool tech to help exploit Clef and the bulky builds we've been seeing in general, in conjunction with Magnezone to deal with Skarmory and a Crunch/Earthquake/Ice Punch DDtar that takes advantage of the holes the other two opened. Scarf Latias, which I usually don't like, fits well here as the Gyara check and Healing Wisher to give DDtar a second life. Void had some synergies on his team that I was also a fan of: I think U-turn Jirachi + Scarf Magnezone w/ HP Ground is awesome at catching Heatrans and opposing Magnezones that switch into Jirachi as it did here, helping to open up Jirachi itself. A possible roll on Breloom with Ice Fang from Gliscor could have potentially aided DBC, but I think he took advantage of the sleep he was able to get off and closed out the endgame very well.

Christo vs Snofall

Our first use of rain this season was staved off by a team pretty well equipped to deal with it from Christo. Scarftar and Encore Clef helped make strides, breaking through Snofall's breakers and preventing rain setters from doing anything else. I think this is a solid and proven rain 6 from Snofall and I think the call to bring it made sense: Christo's water resists have been Latias in Week 2 and Dragonite in Week 1, two mons that surely can't take repeated Hydro Pumps in the rain. I think if Snofall was able to preserve the Metagross a little more he could've been able to take this one, Skarmory and Rotom were already down by the time it was revealed and it could've been able to sweep Christo's team after an Agility. I definitely respect the bring from Snofall and think Christo was able to play well and stave off a potentially dangerous matchup with a solid Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati team.

Kristyl vs Malekith

Kristyl continues being undefeated currently with a paraspam team with a little swagger to it. I think this MU was really tough for Malekith right from the onset: Kristyl's bulky Zapdos immediately made significant progress in conjuction with her Breloom, with her third mon only being revealed on turn 27. Substitute Jirachi with Swagger is a set I haven't seen prior to this game, and I hope I never have to run into it myself, that thing is a demon made to ruin opponents' mood with flinches and confusion hits. Even though it didn't work here, I think Malekith's team was quite cool too: I've been a fan of Banded Dragonite recently, it makes for a good Sleep absorber vs Loom as seen here and it can make a ton of progress vs Clef/Skarm/Bulky Lati structures if Skarmory is removed, and can also be an emergency check vs rain with a powerful Extreme Speed. Overall a game I think was a real uphill matchup from Malekith cause of a good team bring from Kristyl.

General comments:
  • Really love the two Scarf Lucario brings here, along with Snofall's use of it in Week 1. I'm a huge fan of it, it helps compress checking HO structures into one slot so well.
  • Way less traditional Skarm/Clef/Bulky Lati this week, with Christo being the only one to bring the core 5 with Scarftar and Jirachi. We saw Skarm + Bulky Lati from Sakito and Bulky Lati + Clef from Void, but the teams were certaintly more offensive oriented. I'm curious if the high usage of the standard core of five made people use the mons in different ways to maintain their great synergy without being potentially being exploited by people preparing more for the structure.
  • On a similar note, there were 3 Skarms and 3 Magnezones this week: I think people are starting to catch on to the heavy Skarm usage in these past 3 weeks. Will people run less Skarm and use Rose as their spiker akin to last SPL, or will people start running Shed Skarm as Emeral did in his game vs SFG?

I made visuals of the teams used so far and I'd like to share them now that we're past the first third of the season.

Importable: 2022 SPL Visuals, Weeks 1-3

I feel it's still a bit too early to come to a conclusion about the metagame's development, but I would like to point out that I've been very surprised by Heatran's low usage given that it's a staple mon of DPP OU: | 12 | Heatran | 5 | 16.67% | 20.00% |
Granted, Heatran is not as splashable as Jirachi, Tyranitar and Latias and Rose balances have not been used as much this year, but in a tier dominated by Jirachi and with Skarmory & Magnezone on the rise, this definitely looks like a statistical anomaly to me. I look forward to see how the season unfolds and I hope we'll be able to see more creative sets / builds (Kristyl has been my favorite player to watch in that regard, followed by DBC) ! :blobwizard:

tamahome vs Christo

An 125 turn 6-0 from tamahome helps secure him his first win of the season. His team here was interesting, a stall with two mons that hadn't been used this SPL previously but were previous staples of the tier in Blissey and Forretress. I think Blissey is pretty dang good over Clef when paired with a spinner, the extra security vs threats like Suicune and Superrachi really come in handy. Christo's team was certaintly one of the more out there teams so far, and I was a fan of the concept for sure - triple choice users, all having trick, paired with a torment Heatran would go completely in on the majority of bulky teams that have been brought so far this SPL, though it didn't get the matchup it was looking for here with a Swampert that had two moves that could break Heatran's sub. Christo's Gengar being dead turn 6 certainly did not help either, as it was probably the biggest offensive threat on Christo's team to break through tama's defensive core.

BIHI vs DeepBlueC

BIHI's able to get his first win on the board this SPL with a unique Roserade team. I think this was a really cool take on Rose balance - usually you find Heatran and one of Flygon/Latias as a mandatory member of these kinds of squads, but BIHI's squad uses Scarf Lucario + Gliscor in those aforementioned slots. I think Scarf Lucario's ability to stop offense and Gliscor's ability to break defense let you cover the majority of the metagame and fit into the Rose structure nicely. DBC brought an offense this week w/ a Sub Gliscor (likely SD last) I think this was a cool idea too, I've wanted to experiment w/ SD Gliscor myself recently as I think it's nice into the bulky teams of the past 3 weeks, and Metagross + MixGon are great at taking advantage of threats like Latias/Gengar as the former and Skarmory as the latter for Gliscor to sweep in the endgame, with DD tar as a backup sweeper. I think BIHI's removal of Jirachi and Metagross early helped let his Gengar become too big of an offensive threat, making it so DBC couldn't safely dispose of it without letting his team take too much chip to handle a cleanup from Scarf Lucario.

Malekith vs mael

Malekith remains undefeated with Swagger's last hurrah in the tier before the move is banned from the tier. Paraspam in conjunction with the aforementioned Swagger was a force to deal with here, with mael's team not being able to break through the Zapdos after his tyranitar hit itself in confusion. It's a shame, because mael had a pretty cool team himself: this is the first time we've seen Agility Empoleon this SPL it's a damn cool mon, which would have cleaned the game up if Malekith's Jirachi wasn't able to paralyze it (implying it hits its Hydro Pumps, of course). I think it's definitely a good thing we won't have to see Swagger break through opposing mons checks anymore but I do think this brand of paraspam won't be going away, Machamp is a threat to so many of the teams used so far and it's not something you're gonna be able to ignore in the builder.

1643676001617.png

Void vs Sakito

Void's able to snag his first win of the season with a cool Lead Skarm HO team. I really like the inclusion of MixGon and MixRachi on this HO squad - instead of having to opt for Magnezone to break Skarm, just have Jirachi's thunderbolt and Flygon's fire blast able to force it out or chii it enough for Gengar or DDtar to break through it. Sakito's team has a similar structure to his last week's team (Skarm + tar + Luc + Latias + Ghost + X), but the Skarm lead being slower than Void's allowed Void to take momentum quick and never really let off the gas pedal. I'm happy to see Void win and hope he continues to bring cool fast paced teams like this.

1643676832458.png

Snofall vs Kristyl

An offensive team with double trick users was able to help Snofall put an end to Kristyl's undefeated season. Fortunate was not on Kristyl's side however, with an untimely crit on her Skarm from Gyara that made it so she couldn't recover along with the last turn being a 70% roll to live that killed her Clef from Rotom that definitely would have won her the game if gone differently. I think Snofall made a good call with this team, tar + Gyara are a good call into bulkier builds w/ Gyara checks like Starmie and Latias that Kristyl was bringing. I also like Kristyl's choice of Blissey too, as I mentioneid in tama's writeup I think Bliss is a pretty underutilized threat that has real advantages over Bliss. Maybe not the prettiest game, but I think both players brought cool teams and I'm excited for what they do for the rest of the season.

Ok so, after watching SPL games something came to my mind and I wanted to do a post about it :

SPL XIII after week 4 :

| 4 | Skarmory | 16 | 40.00% | 50.00% |
| 17 | Roserade | 4 | 10.00% | 25.00% |

SPL XII after week 4 :

Skarmory = 4 usages, 1 win
Roserade = 5 usages, 5 wins

SPL XII after finals :

19 | Skarmory | 13 | 14.44% | 30.77%
13 | Roserade | 16 | 17.78% | 68.75%

Do I need to say something more ? HOW MANY SKARMS ??? 16 ??? And how many Roserade ? ONLY 4 ???

During SPL XII, Roserade Double Spikes teams were dominant, destroying players who were using their best offenses because of the Dugtrio ban. Rose had 8 usages and had a 100% winrate after week 5.
And now, 1 year later, it's the total opposite... but why ? There is many reasons to this imo.

1- The fall of Starmie

It became insanely hard to spin, because of the omnipresence of ghosts : If you don't get the right predict ( Forre : spin or spiking ? Starmie : spin or Hydro ?) , you will lose a precious turn. Forre is also walled by Def Tom and Starmie can Hydro / Surf it but is trapped by Tar, is wear down by sand, has a poor defensive typing and has a poor bulk even if it is really fast. Starmie also cannot spin vs Roserade ...
And even if you killed the opposing ghost type, you didn't achieve your most important objective by using Starmie : Spin. The mission of removing SR and supporting pokemons like Gyara / Dnite etc failed.
If we look at the VR of the Dug era, Starmie was A+ and now if you we look at the differents recents VRs from good DPP players, it's now mostly A- .
What does that mean ? Less Starmie = more teams that don't resort to spin = less spikes immu ( Gyara / Dnite etc ) outside of offensive teams = more grounded pokemons = more spikes weak teams.

2- The Strenght of the Stall Core : Skarm + Defensive Lati + Defensive Rotom + Clef + Scarf Tar + Filler ( wincond )

This core is incredibly good rn and everyone saw its strenght during DPP Cup and Classic POs ( ABR spammed it and had ofc good results using it ) :

- Skarm : Spikes, good response to physical attackers ( considering the omnipresence of Azelf + 5 physical setups team ) with Whirlwind but struggles against bulky Starmie.
- Lati : Twave + Roar = Deals with a lot setups, spreading para to slow down offensive threats, fast and having a fast Roar is so good and even more with spikes up.
- Rotom : Anti-spin, Explosion immu, Status absorber and spreader ( WoW ), shits on Jirachi and Forre.
- Clef : Special glue, MixGon answer, Encore + Knock off = shits on stall and slow setups, force switches, deadly with spikes up, able you to not lose vs a setup which is in 1v6 thus impossible to phaze.
- Tar ( lead most of the time ) : Traps Gengar / Scarf Tom which are massive pains for this core because of Taunt and Trick, traps Starmie, Sand, speed control, if you run SR on it that means that you can get your rocks against Azelf Lead which is incredibly good.

And you have a filler which is most a time another spikes abuser like a AOA Jirachi or a MixGon ( like in DBC's team vs Sakito ).
We also saw many variations during DPP Cup ( I had access to McMeghan DPP Cup replays ) and during this SPL like Magnezone > Rotom or Quag / Hippo / Nidoqueen / Gliscor > Rotom or Empo > Lati ( like Snofall's one vs Sakito ) because less Starmie implies that you don't need a ghost but you still have double phazer core aka LatiSkarm or EmpoSkarm.

3- The consequences on the metagame

Roserade teams are extremely weak to spikes and don't really have a good longevity : in every FWG Tspikes based teams of my builder ( I have like 9-10 ), we have at least 4 spikes weak pokemons ( Pert, Tran, Rose, Cune, Jirachi, Tar ) and you have ofc nothing to remove them. So you just have to get good interaction with Skarm like Pert vs Skarm and you have a free layer of Spikes. ( Oh and btw they don't have a Knock Off switch in lmao ).
Add a Spikes abuser like Rachi / Gon like i said earlier and it's imo nearly a free MU. ( MixGon is a FWG teams killer ).

" I want to use my CM Cune / Sub CM Rachi ( which was before a Stall killer ) to break ! " No you can't because Lati / Clef will ruin you with Roar / Encore.
" I'm going to stack spikes and chip everything to put them in range of spikes abuser " You also can't because there is at least 4 Spikes immu in opp's team so you can't really make progress using them.
"We can try to use a MixRachi to break ! like in Sakito's team ! ( vs DBC )" Ok why not but how do you get rid of Rotom without Tar ? ( Flinching 7-8 times doesn't count ofc lol )
" I have Trick on my Lati / Rotom ! My gameplan is to trick the Clef into CMing with Suicune " That can work but it is very predictable and opp still have his second phazer and his Scarf Tar.
" I have Explosion on my SpD ( or not ) Heatran ! I'm going to Boom on the Clef and then CMing with Suicune " Same as above, every good DPP player knows that tech so they will be aware of it. Oh and if you lose your Heatran, its going to be harder to deal with opp's Jirachi right ? So is the trade worth ?

Switches after switches, sand damage after sand damage, Knock Off after Knock Off... You're losing the game without being able to do something really impactful enabling your team to make real progress positioning you in a winning position.

Ofc you're not forced to use a stall-like team. For exemple you can load a HO team with a Froslass lead like Mael did or even a Skarm lead like Void did last week ( again Void very cool team, huge fan of it ).

And just overall, I have the impression that every teams have now like at least 3 spikes immunities. Am I blind and it was like this before or is it again because of spikes omnipresence ?

4- Lucario.

Lucario became one of the best Spikes abusers in offensive teams.
We saw many of Lucario from the beginning of this SPL and it's not really a suprise imo. Lucario is very good atm. Mostly coupled to spikes, it makes it a very good finisher / midgame breaker. You usually need a Tar to trap ghosts and a ghost to prevent a potential spin. So you have : Tar + Spikes + Ghost + Luc + 2 fillers. Fillers can be Milotic, Swampert, Latias, Flygon, rare Magnezone, Clef ...
Scarf Tar if you run Ice Punch on Lucario / Another item if you run Bullet Punch because you don't really need anymore to trap Gengar ( my favorite set with Bpunch Luc is Custap AOA Tar = Crunch + EQ + Fire Blast + Ice Beam )
Last year we mostly saw SD Luc doing some good work vs BO, vs Offense thx to Extreme Speed / Bullet Punch or even against some Stalls ( Emeral vs Johnnyg2 for ROAPL, Christo vs Snofall last SPL, Sakito vs Emeral last SPL etc etc or myself vs Sageau for FCL https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/dpp-ou-teambuilding-competition.3687353/post-9004362 ).
We can also use Lucario in Spikes based Hyper Offense aka Double ( or not ) Ghost offense. Stack Spikes using a Froslass lead or a Skarm lead, prevent the spin, setup your Lucario ( if needed ) and win the game. We saw Emeral using a variant of it during ROAPL vs Hodor, Watashi using another variant vs 16bit during DPP PL.
More recently, people starting to use only one ghost in their team ( not going to explain why again ) allowing them to have a different approach and more options. The Grand Babido's team is a very good example https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/offense.3690258/post-8964619 .
During this SPL we saw 2 HOs featuring this ( Mael and Void ) and I think we are going to see more of this teamstyle.

But there's also another set and this one is shining a lot this year, I'm talking about Scarf Lucario. Scarf Lucario is very cool mon, having Close Combat + Thunder Punch + Ice Punch allows you to revenge kill every +speed setup except Metagross ( and Empo if you're running Adamant ). But you have also a terrifying weapon on it : Copycat. Copycat is nasty as hell : you copy the last move been used so that means that if you come in just after a double down due to an Explosion you can copy it and do another double down, you also copy moves like Roar / Whirlwind so that means if you have at least rocks up and opp doesn't have Protect or a Scarfer facter than Scarf Luc, he loses. The one who started to use it was Excal and he explained very well the advantages of copycat here https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/dpp-ou-creative-and-underrated-sets.3663647/post-8476301 .
It remains a very good finisher as we saw in Snofall vs Sakito ( week 1 ) or Tama vs Sakito ( week 3 )
Remember Bab's team ?
You have a Scarf Lucario with Copycat inside it and SR + Spikes + Copycat is terrifying for a lot of teams. Froslass is fast enough to get most of the time a layer. Metagross comes easily on Tyranitar or a paralysed mon to get free rocks. After that, force pokemons like Skarm / Hippo using your setups forcing a phaze move and PRAY to get Lucario in. And if it comes in you have 32 free Copycat and a free win. You're right, it's pure MU fish because Protect or Scarf Jirachi ( which is not a good example because it is uncommon since Dug ban ) ruins it but it's terribly effective. I used it myself on the ladder and it's impressive to see how many teams aren't prepared for it ( does it deserve a ban or suspect ? ).

☆Snofall: gg
☆Sakito: gg
☆Snofall: no copycat today tho
☆Snofall: unfort

It's a real redemption for Lucario :

SPL XI : Poor usage and poor winrate

| 29 | Lucario | 6 | 6.12% | 16.67%

SPL XII : Poor usage BUT really good winrate

| 28 | Lucario | 6 | 6.67% | 66.67%

SPL XIII after week 4 : Insane usage and good winrate

| 8 | Lucario | 8 | 20.00% | 50.00% |

So after all of this the question is : how to be prepared to spikes + ghost + phazing ?

1- Use a Spikes immu team like DBC did week 2 : that's a very good option but it's very restrictive. No need to stress about hazards beacuse you don't care about them.

2- Use a Scarf Lucario and pray to face the double phazer core to "sweep" before losing to opp's spikes : only one thing to say
Pêcheur.png

3- Use a Magnezone to trap Skarm : could be a very good idea but we saw many Shed Shell Skarm this year, use it at your own risk ig. Good option regardless.

4- Use more Taunt to prevent spikes / phazing moves : good option but a bit restrictive imo, not a lot of pokemons have it and those who have it are well known for using it and you usually don't want to stay on them with your Skarm :

Azelf : Common, Lead, ruined by Scarf Tar with rocks.
Aero : Common, Lead, better vs rocks Scarf Tar.
Gengar : Common, ruined by Scarf Tar.
Gliscor : Common but most of defensive Latis run Ice Beam for it
Gyara : Rare, very good against the double phazer core if you don't run into a Tbolt Lati
Heatran : Rare but can be really good early game / mid-game
Infernape : Doesn't really need taunt but it can be an innovation,
Skarm : Rare, you need room for it but it is excellent vs other Skarms
Tar : Well just run Fire Blast for Skarm, you also beat Lati because it doesn't run anymore Reflect.
Weavile : lol.

5- Fast Mixed Lum Tar : Lum for WoW and fast to outspeed Rotom so it can trap it easily, Fire Blast for Skarm. You need to have the momentum to avoid the pressure of spikes.

6- Donphan with Odor Sloth : not a meme but too much restrictive and not really a good mon.

7- Innovate : I'm bad at this but pretty sure a lot players already have good ideas.

Well I don't know what to think about it, I'm afraid that DPP will become as BW aka Spikes reliant with Skarms / Rose everywhere. I hope not because I love this tier.

My favorites teams so far ( each week )
1 : Mael / Snofall
2 : Mael ( I love Froslass )
3 : DBC
4 : Void / Tama ( ADV in DPP be like )

Anyway thx for reading and have a good day.
Looking foward to see more SPL Games !
As always, sry if my english sucks
