No joke or punchline this week. I really can't be the funniest person every week so I will use this post to remind you to stay hydrated and don't overdo your prep for this week; remember to have fun.
Leo vs Gtcha: *dies of cringe*

RE: SoulWind vs Yelodash

The Sharks have called activity for the match SoulWind vs Yelodash. Although Yelodash messaged on Smogon 33 minutes before scheduled time and had messaged SoulWind on Smogtours, Yelodash was on an alt that could not be interpreted as a common alias and failed to identify himself. After SoulWind showed up at scheduled time at 3:00PM (GMT-5) and was unable to find Yelodash, Sharks manager TDK tagged Scooter's manager Excal at 3:15PM (GMT-5) in order to try and find him. However, although Excal was present to respond to the inquiry, the Scooters failed to retrieve Yelodash or a suitable substitute before the 30 minute window had passed. Because of this, SoulWind will get an activity win over Yelodash.
Ayez un peu honte mdr, 5 trophées tu gagnes la week 9-2 et t'as recours à des pratiques comme ça

gm. changing up the format to 2 games per series for this one. i've tried to find a midground between the banger games and featuring a variety of different generations, in case you were wondering about the selection process. now then, without further ado..

BW: Dark Eeveon vs. Jisoo - If you had told me before the start of this tournament that Jisoo would start his first SPL 6-0, my reaction would not have been "so true". However, here we are and Jisoo has looked like a player that's been doing this shit for years. Seemingly seamlessly selecting the correct dice team of the week (DTOTW) and aggravating his opponents and spectators alike by Having Fun with additional in-game commentary. I'm not convinced convinced yet, though. The game against watashi was arguably the worst one anyone's played this entire tournament, as Jisoo said fuck it despite the burn threat looming. Overall it's been a strong run for Jisoo, though, especially when factoring in BW Cup as well. I see no reason why it shouldn't continue for a while longer.

Moving on from the player using Bouff nicknames to the player that may actually bring a Bouffalant this SPL. I am a big big fan of Dark Eeveon. I love that after the slow start to the season a decision was made to just let him go off using his trademark creative offensive onslaught, featuring the likes of Omastar, Conkeldurr and Feraligatr. Unsurprisingly, he's looked infinitely more dangerous and swiftly followed up an 0-2 start with an amazing 4 game winning streak. The Tyrants are now eliminated, though I doubt that affects Eeveon's team choice much. I'd trust him most with the season on the line if he brought some wild Conkeldurr offense, personally. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the DTOTW will feature some anti offense technology, probably with a Pokemon or two that rock a nice shade of pink, to help with offsetting Eeveon's relentless momentum coming into this game. Tragically, one of these winning streaks must come to an end. They've won a combined 10 BW games straight heading into this one, too. Very impressive stuff for two cheap purchases.

DPP: reyscarface vs. DeepBlueC - This game is very interesting to me and admittedly I have no idea what to really expect from either player. DBC being 4-2 for 5k in DPP doesn't completely sit right with me, considering he signed up specifically saying he doesn't want to start there this season. It might've actually halved his price, but that's how these things go sometimes. As for his games and teams, I've definitely enjoyed them. I'm always down for a throwback lead Machamp and DBC always manages to come up with cool fresh takes on the meta, year after year. 'The meta' is not what he'll be up against this time, though. In fact, there's a decent chance rey's team for this week will more closely resemble one of his SCL PU teams than this SPL's DPP teams. I'd unironically prepare for Trick Claydol lead, at least..

Anything could be brought here, I think. Old school shit like Vaporeon or perhaps even Gyaravire offense is absolutely on the table. BKC has checked out, which means the Tyrants DPP slot is entirely at the mercy of rey and PDC. We're gonna be in for some insane shit, right? I think I'm gonna trust it, too. DBC's properly structured and metagame respecting approach to DPP is sound during most weeks, but I'm unsure whether it will be here as well. This is the type of week that makes you look at your team and ask yourself if your Curse Umbreon match-up is workable. DBC might just be too neat, too tidy and too respectful for the vile, sacrilegious crimes in the team builder that are about to come his way. No doubt a highlight for this week.

SV: xavgb vs. Nat - As a Nat fan, I'm always delighted when I see her actually enjoy Pokemon and succeed, rather than being extremely down on the game and the experience as a whole. A Walking Wake, one might even call her when things aren't going well. To me, SV as a generation has all the makings of a prime Nat type of environment. The best defense is offense. Back in Sword and Shield, Nat's favorite defensive Pokemon was Choice Band Buzzwole, to help paint a clearer picture. Fast forward to 2023 and just imagine the joy a Great Tusk metagame must bring her. This current state of finding the right way to not get blown out by a certain tera typing and revenge killing options available left and right, I'm not the least bit surprised Nat is thriving.

Xavier Great Britain has also popped off, to say the least. Prior to SPL, Streshiram over here turboblazed through the no johns release tournament and is now following up those early signs of metagame mastery with a 5-1 record in SPL XIV thus far. Could've just as easily been 6-0, too. Honestly, this game is a toss up between two of the strongest players in the SV pool. I instinctively lean towards Nat right now, mostly because I trust her creativity and general feel in such an offensive meta (as well as gind gaming support), but xav has obviously done nothing but farm in this generation. I'm very excited and almost wish this game wasn't until next week, so we could've seen how these two frontrunners would've tackled the newly dropped Pokemon entering the fray. I'll be tuning in hyped regardless, though.

RBY: chuva de perereca vs. Heroic Troller - I'm using this match-up as a reason to get back into the swing of things when it comes to RBY. After checking the spreadsheet I found out that Troller is only 3-3 heading into this week and admittedly I had no real idea as to why or what happened. Much like Conflict watching his teammates get crit by Flower Trick, I was uninformed yet deeply saddened. Bluntly put, Troller is the best to ever do it in this generation and his consistency in SPL has been nothing short of stellar. After watching his games so far I've deduced that he has not in fact become washed and instead just gotten pretty damn unlucky in most of the series he's lost, even within the realm of odds in RBY. Besides, 3 wins out of 6 isn't exactly barren valley territory either.

chuva, meanwhile, is currently 12-5 in SPL overall, which is pretty damn great as well. Outside of week 1 against the User of Cheats, chuva has either 2-0d or gotten 0-2d each set. Only 3 of those 10 games have gone over 100 turns, too. It's pretty clear to me that chuva has shit to do during the weekends. chuva also likes speeding up the games more, using sets like all-out-attacking Self-Destruct Snorlax, while Troller has built up a strong resistance against Restless Lax Syndrome (RLS). That isn't to say Troller can't bring the fire himself, whether that's in the form of another Moltres or through spicy plays. Nobody quite Body Slams with Tauros as relentlessly as Troller does and despite chuva's amazing resume in such a short period of time, I can't go against Troller in this tier vs anyone.

SM: Empo vs. emforbes - Now then, time to talk about a player that has looked absolutely helpless this SPL compared to his VGC prowess. Just kidding! I won't be covering Michael vs. devin for this series.. For those of you that hadn't noticed, Emilio has been leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. TDNT, Booty and Lusa have now all either been subbed out or moved to a different tier following a grim (or Glimm, as Shake would say.. (Nails you are my entire audience for that joke)) encounter against one of VGC's finest. He's certainly no slouch in SM either and it hasn't come out of nowhere, as Emilio's been playing SM OU for a long time and enjoyed success in circuit tournaments, too. Currently 4-2 in SPL, he looks right at home in a singles format as well. I've enjoyed the variety in his team choices and frankly put he has farmed most of his wins in unclose games. The losses against Skype and umbry were rough match-ups from what I could tell and it's obvious to me the Classiest bagged a huge bargain for their SM slot.

Having said that, surely he's in trouble this week, right? Anyone even remember the last time Empo lost? Like the Scooters GSC slot, I'm currently blanking, but more on that later... I feel like Empo joins maybe 3 tournaments a year and then wins every game in all of them. He's capable of wielding any type of structure or style in SM and hasn't looked like dropping a game yet. The BIGS draft seems to rely on Empo winning every week, but that's fine considering he keeps doing exactly that. The Classiest seem to be getting closer and closer to finding their best line-up, especially with Der Bestie moving to his borderline auto-win SS slot, so I don't think the weight on Empo's shoulders is getting any lighter. Nobody has looked like a more certain W in SPL either, though.

RSE: Hclat vs. Triangles - Banger. I think these two will enjoy this game a lot themselves, too. There's even decent potential of them analyzing and discussing the respective trials and tribulations mid-game as they unfold. Hclat's SPL has been a wild ride so far. I'm still not quite sure how he lost to Roro and after starting off 0-4 many a player would've thrown in the proverbial towel right then and there. Things are looking up for the Clat, though. It's two wins in a row for him and the BIGS would've gotten stuck at 6-6 against the now eliminated Tyrants, if not for Hclat bouncing back admirably. Granted, he did it in the most RBY way possible with a Jynx lead, but even so.. signs of life from the CI6 champion are very promising for the BIGS. Ultimately that is the biggest individual tournament to win as an ADV player.

Too bad he's not the only one here that's won it! Triangles has been good this season. Coming into the tournament I had imagined Triangles as higher end given his experience and perhaps a slightly less daunting ADV pool as we've maybe seen in past iterations. His pricetag was about what I expected for that reason, too. I'm generally very high on Triangles and I don't doubt he'll continue his strong run thus far. The main difference in this particular match-up might be how I perceive each player's mentality going in. Hclat to me is very clearly Having Fun, especially looking at teams like the one he brought against BIHI. Triangles, on the other hand, gives me much more of a trying and competing hard vibe, even shouting out teammate Cenex, an abbreviation nobody should be using when referring to Century Express, for the many test games he played with him. As they say on Match of the Day when one player gets to the ball before the other, it seems as though he simply wants it more. Curious to see what these two specialists will have in store for us! This game has strong C-rank Pokemon potential for sure.

ADV: BIHI vs. Shitrock enjoyer - Apologies for the same generation back to back like this, but after going back and forth on which games to talk about I decided I had to cover BIHEAT. The man has ascended. Currently sitting at 5-1 this SPL and being the Raiders's go-to tiebreak closer in last year's tournament, going 8-5 overall and defeating Troller in RBY for good measure. In between he has casually won both WCoP and SCL to boot, though not with the same kind of dominance as he's shown when old gens are involved. Not everyone was sold on BIHI being able to do it big in ADV as well ahead of the season, myself included, but it's pretty clear now that he very much can. I've had the pleasure of having BIHI on the Wolfpack a few years ago back when he was first returning to tournaments and I know for a fact this run of success he's enjoying now is no coincidence. He puts in the time and effort and thoroughly deserves the plaudits for that. I say "returning" by the way, because BIHI had to be revived on Cinnabar Island for any of this to happen. He's been around for a looooong time, making playoffs of the first ever OLT back in 2014 before his opponent this week was even born. In fact..

The Shitrock enjoyer supposedly has more alts in the top 15 of the ADV ladder than years he has been alive for on this planet. I love that fresh talented players that are young in both the Smogon and irl sense actually bring new life to old generation communities. It's a good look for tournaments as a whole. The enjoyer, better known as Fruhdazi, is one of the latest proponents of this and is already making quite a name for himself, despite not being allowed in to watch the new PG-13 rated Black Panther movie at the local theater. After watching some replays it's clear to me that Fruhdazi is at the very least competent and it doesn't surprise me that more and more of the veteran ADV players are quite high on him either. Whether his youthful exuberance will be enough against Bihiyem remains to be seen, but I'm excited to find out. The past gen pools in SPL increasingly featuring more new names is putting a smile on my face either way. Go get em.

GSC: Quartosa vs. Fear - In what reads like a made up statistic, the Scooters started with 3 wins and 1 tie from their first 4 weeks in SPL XII and have since then gone 1-14-6 up until now. That is 1 win, 14 losses and 6 ties, just to clarify. This franchise couldn't have exploded harder if it were facing Quartosa's Snorlax, I swear to god. Quartosa is currently 0-3 in GSC, but has honestly impressed me a lot. The Scooters thought this was gonna be Hyoga's year, but even with the assistance of Smogtours's !help commands, they have unfortunately left their teammates hanging once more. Since taking over the slot, Quartosa has held his own admirably and could have had at least two wins if it weren't for some untimely rough breaks. Given the fact that Quartosa signed up for modern gens and was more or less forced into playing a wildly different tier, I'd be a proud manager looking at how he's played his games for sure.

Unfortunately, next on the list of fixtures is resident GSC pool farmer Fear. With a 4-2 record and counting, Fear is looking to add onto his already absurd GSC SPL record since returning to the scene back in SPL 8. My favorite thing about Fear in SPL is that he keeps pushing the metagame with his creativity every time, despite playing the same old generation season after season. I don't know how he does it, but somehow we got to see Rest Talk Jynx and Misdreavus offense already this season and I imagine there's more to come still. There is always the chance of Fear getting lost in the sauce when preparing his team, and perhaps this time Quartosa can crit Fear's Snorlax. Return the favor, if you will. Fear rarely slips against opponents he should beat, but I swear Quartosa has not been bad at all if you actually watch the games rather than the spreadsheet. I hope he's able to win at least one of these games before the season ends, though it's a tall, tall order this week.

Since we are now out I would like to thank all our players and helpers. I know this wasn't the season we all hoped for and I still think our team had lots of potential. I wanna take this chance to thank procorphish especially, who initially was in our draft plans, but we couldn't end up getting. Your prep and effort were very valuable and I hope that you'll get your chance soon
