How To Lure

art coming soon
Hey everyone! I have one question, are you bored of not being able to kill the same A+ rank mon everywhere? Yes? So this project will please you!
What is a lure? A lure is defined as any Pokémon that manages to draw out (or "lure") and eliminate an opponent's Pokémon which serves as a potential roadblock to the sweeper of your choice. (For more information read that Concept Of Lure)
  • Every round, I'll pick one Pokemon from the "USUM OU Viability Rankings" to be discussed. The submission stage will last from Monday to Thursday.
  • During the round, post a Pokemon of your choosing from the Viability Rankings which is able to lure the current target, with a Sprite, a Set, Description, and Calculations if necessary. (Note that they MUST be viable, no gimmicks.)
  • From Friday to Sunday, you'll vote for one or two lure, and, at the end of the round, results will be archived with a link to the posts so that eventually we'll have a bank of lure for each viable target in the tier with descriptions and sets to match.
  • The same Pokemon may be picked, but they have to have a different set.
Rules:
  • Only post viable pokémon from the current USUM OU VR, or I will reject your submission. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know on here, Pokémon Showdown!, or Discord.
  • If you think someone else's submission is unviable, please let me know with a reasoning of why.
  • If your submission isn't clear enough, back it up with some calcs (you can use this website to calc.)
  • Please do not submit any Pokémon or items from the blacklist, I will reject your submission and most likely ask you to delete your post.

Toxapex is a common check to Ash Greninja variants due to it being able to scout its move, and either wall it if it locks into a Water move, or pivot into a Dark resist if it clicks Dark Pulse. However, Ground Z Protean Greninja bluffs the Ash Gren, and KOes Toxapex with a well timed Tectonic Rage!

252 Atk Protean Greninja Tectonic Rage (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Toxapex: 294-348 (96.7 - 114.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Spdef Toxapex is a great switchin to Specs-AGren and both Scarf and Specially based Protean. However Dig combined with Groundium-Z gives it access to Tectonic Rage which completely turns the table on Pex (and Magearna) and paves the way for its teammates. This set also offers additionly utility by luring other Gren checks through Ice Beam and Gunk Shot and Spikes punishes switches which guarantees the KO against pex the next time it switches in. U-turn can also run instead of Spikes if the team has another Spike setter or if the momentum gained is more useful to the team

Even if it is not the most consistent lure, Victini Scarf remains a pokemon capable of baiting many pokemons like Heatran, Latias-Mega, Swampert-Mega, Rotom-Wash, Gliscor and, in our case, Toxapex (indeed, in most cases, Victini is very often choice-locked and, thus, coming on a V-create is a considerable gain of momentum for them). The idea is that, with the investment in HP, Final Gambit allows you to kill Victini's checks without worry.

Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- High Jump Kick
- Facade
- Encore

The goal of this set is extremely simple. Toxapex tends to be a great switch in to Lopunny because of Lop's inability to 2HKO it reliably. Pex can easily pivot on Lopunny and force it out, threatening it with a Scald burn, or Toxic. However, Lopunny can flip the situation to its advantage by running Facade. If burned or poisoned, Lopunny will get a 140 BP, 100 Acc Normal STAB with no drawback, becoming an absolute nightmare to switch into. Encore is there to always win the 1v1, Encoring Pex into Scald, Toxic, Baneful Bunker or Recover, thus letting Lopunny PP Stall Pex if need be with Facade's 32 PPs.
This set is also a great Rotom-W lure, and makes Lop act as a pseudo status absorber for offensive teams. If you feel like you don't need Encore, feel free to replace it with Frustration, or Quick Attack depending on your preferences.

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega Facade (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 163-193 (53.6 - 63.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Calm Mind + Electrium Z boosted Thunderbolt is a great Toxapex lure, as Z-Thunderbolt will turn into a strong Gigavolt Havoc and will OHKO Toxapex after a +1 boost. Usually Toxapex can just haze away the Calm Mind boosts and Clefable can very well run fire coverage for Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory, but Z-Thunderbolt can help bypassing Toxapex especially after a +1. A non-boosted Gigavolt Havoc can still catch Toxapex off guard with KOing it in the subsequent turn with Thunderbolt.

I'm quite the fan of Jirachi, and every now and again I use Z crystals over lefties or scarf. This set is pretty basic in that it will KO toxapex after stealth rocks. Toxapex does not mind switching into Jirachi as it does not normally care for any of the moves it commonly runs in SM - while the Jirachi user can u-turn, this is quite a stale play-pattern and toxapex can switch in indefinitely due to regenerator. Another thing I also enjoy about this set is the fact that this set beats other common stealth rock + u-turn Jirachi switch-ins, such as Celesteela and Skarmory (though that really lies outside the scope of this thread). The EV spread is pretty basic, allowing you to KO Toxapex after rocks chip, avoid the 2hko from specs Lele's hidden power fire, and speed creep mons speed creeping 253Spe Heatran.
The 60% paralysis chance on raw thunder is also quite nice.

I find Heatran to generally be more difficult to lure than a lot of other common pokemon, as things that annoy heatran, such as earthquake, are generally quite obvious - such as EQ on tangrowth; and not a lot pokemon take good advantage of heatran being removed offensively (it is still quite nice to remove defensively however).

This is a pretty standard Z Tornadus set that works well as a heatran lure as players are often forced to speculate on which Z move Tornadus carries & flying is the most common. Additionally, Heatran is a common switch in to Tornadus, not minding any of its moves barring Knock Off when it has lefties, or general fighting coverage (SP + FB) however, heatran is often the go-to switch in against Tornadus' powerful hurricane. This is where Fightinium Z is nice to pick off a chipped or offensive Heatran:

252 SpA Tornadus-Therian All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 212+ SpD Heatran: 262-310 (67.8 - 80.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch

- Superpower

Usually, Heatran is a check of Scizor-Mega (although he won't appreciate U-turn or Knock Off from Scizor-Mega). Thus, the investment in Speed allows Scizor-Mega to outspeed Heatran SpDef (211 Speed sufficient to outspeed the usual spread of Heatran SpDef). Because of this, Scizor-Mega can easily place one Swords Dance and OHKO with Superpower. Regarding Heatran Off, Superpower is still very good to greatly weaken Heatran (particularly Heatran Off does not have recovery at all).

Some calcs:

Heatran SpDef:

- +2 0 Atk Scizor-Mega Superpower vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 466-550 (120.7 - 142.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Heatran Off:

- 0 Atk Scizor-Mega Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 234-276 (72.4 - 85.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Note: We can consider increasing the Speed to 220 to outspeed Magnezone Modest Full Speed. However, this requires reducing the bulk of Scizor-Mega and therefore being weaker to Alakazam-Mega:

- 252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 144 SpD Scizor-Mega: 142-168 (41.3 - 48.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

- 252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 108 SpD Scizor-Mega: 147-174 (42.8 - 50.7%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO

Heatran is like one of 2 switch ins to this demon, even though it can only take like 2 hits before it disintegrates. Focus punch mawile lets you keep a ton of momentum if you get a good swap to heatran. It also decimates any defensive checks to mawile like ferro (even tho mawile sets up on ferro and kills it). The only thing that I dont think this set will be beating is Skarm, but skarm can only whirlwind you out.

Hidden Power Ground Serperior can easily lure in Heatran, as Heatran usually can help vs Serperior and tank Leaf Storm coming from it. but if Serperior finds itself behind a Sub and has a Contrary-boosted SpA stat it can catch both Heatran off guard with Hidden Power Ground, which is 4x super effective against Heatran. Heatran will finds itself safe, as Serperior is usually Hidden Power Fire and Heatrans Flash Fire can take advantage of Hidden Power Fire, but with Hidden Power Ground Serperior can catch it by surprise.
