Slowking is a specially defensive pivot with access to Chilly Reception, allowing it to make momentum relatively safely due to the combination of its low Speed and Regenerator. Chilly Reception can also be used for cancelling the effects of opposing weather such as rain and sun, while also enabling offensive Ice-types due to snow's Defense boost. Surf is it's most reliable STAB move, being necessary to sucessfully check Iron Moth and Iron Valiant. Thunder Wave is a natural choice alongside Surf, since Ground-types like Great Tusk and Iron Treads will likely not want to switch into Surf while also preventing Slowking from being setup fodder for Volcarona and Dragonite. Future Sight is a solid option that threatens more defensive teams when paired with physical wallbreakers such as Baxcalibur and Cinderace, as it threatens opposing defensive Pokemon like Toxapex and Amoonguss. Slowking runs maximum Special Defense EVs in order to maximize its pivoting opportunities as well as for switching into a variety of other special attackers such as Walking Wake, Rotom-W, Volcarona, and Hatterene. It also lets it make use of Chilly Reception and Thunder Wave for dynamic counterplay. Maximum Special Defense EVs also give Slowking more opportunities to safely pivot in front of Pokemon that aren't immediately threatening but can beat it in the long term, such as Gholdengo, Garganacl, Hisuian Zoroark, and Choice Specs Dragapult. 0 Attack IVs reduce damage taken from Foul Play users, while 0 Speed IVs in tandem with Sassy nature maximize the odds of slow pivoting infront of opponents, which is important to nearly guarantee safely bringing in other teammates. Slowking can utilize Tera Water to remove its Bug-, Ghost-, and Dark-type weaknesses, enhancing its match-up against Gholdengo, Dragapult, Greninja, and Volcarona while also allowing it to absorb U-turn better. Additionally, it also boosts Surf's damage output. Tera Fairy turns the tables on Dragapult and Greninja, allowing it to wall their Choice Specs sets reliably.
Slowking fits on balance teams due to its exclusive access to Chilly Reception, as they can take advantage of both the snow and momentum generated by it. Slowking enjoys being paired with Pokemon that can generate momentum, such as Cinderace, Rotom-W, and Sandy Shocks, while also being able to pivot around Garganacl to avoid being wear down by its Salt Cure. Slowking is naturally paired with physically defensive walls with good synergy, such as Great Tusk, Amoonguss, and Corviknight, which answer many of Slowking´s checks such as Kingambit, Meowscarada and Roaring Moon. Slowking is generally vulnerable to becoming fodder for Orthworm since it can not paralyze targets through Orthworm´s passed Substitutes. As such, Pokemon like Infiltrator Dragapult and Unaware Pokemon like Skeledirge and Dondozo are logical Slowking teammates that fix this issue, since Dragapult´s Infiltrator ignores Substitute, with the same effect applying to Skeledirge´s Torch Song, while Unaware ignores opposing stat boosts, which is crucial for answering setup sweepers like Belly Drum Azumarill and Swords Dance Iron Valiant that are present in hyper offense teams Orthworm is featured on. Dark-types like Kingambit and Meowscarada can check and occasionally switch into special attackers which have an advantage against Slowking like Nasty Plot Gholdengo, Choice Specs Greninja, and Choice Specs Dragapult, creating good defensive synergy without lacking offensive capabilities.
